Mountain Lion lockscreen when trying other startup options

Hi guys,
Facing this problem when I'm trying to boot from another startup disk (e.g. do a recovery install on the mountain lion system):
I do the command+r or the option holding while booting on my Macbook Air, and I simply get this lockscreen asking for a password and neither my masterpassowrd / onlyuser-admin-acconut-password work for it.
What on earth is this screen / what kind of password does it require then lol? My other computers have no screen when trying to do the same.

You can install systems like Lion and Mountain Lion without rebooting from a separate disk, just by running the installer. I would guess that this would not involve the firmware password (though I'm not sure, as that install method is relatively new and not mentioned in Apple's documentation of firmware passwords).
However, if you have done clean installs on that machine at any point, booting from an install disk or into recovery mode, then I would think the firmware password must have been added at some later date.

Which printer?  You've checked your printer manufacturer's website for an updated driver I assume?

Your Mac must be one of the following models:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)

Yesterday, I purchased Mountain Lion OSX and tried to download it but I don't think the download worked.  How can I tell if I am using Mountain Lion and how do I get help if the download was unsuccessful?

Click your Apple menu icon top left corner of your screen.
From the drop down menu click About This Mac.
If Mountain Lion is installed, it will say:  v10.8
If not, launch the App Store. From the App Store menu bar click Store > Check for Unfinished Downloads
FYI ..  for downloading Mountain Lion from the App Store, a high speed (broadband) internet connection is strongly recommended by Apple as noted here > iTUNES STORE - MAC APP STORE - TERMS AND CONDITIONS
If you need to reinstall OS X or repair the the startup disk Mountain Lion Recovery, that requires broadband access to the internet via Wi-Fi or an Ethernet connection. OS X is downloaded over the internet form Apple when OS X Recovery is used for reinstallation.

  • Mountain Lion on Macbook won't startup

Perhaps some guys have already asked many similar questions, but my case is slightly more awkward. So I decided to post a new thread and hopefully someone could help me out.
I started to experienced this wierd behavior of my macbook 13" last night. The symptom is like this:
When I powered on, I heard the start-up tone. But it sometimes remained black screen and sometimes showed me the apple logo without spinning gear.
What I have done so far is:
I power it off, unplug the power adapter, wait 15 seconds and attach the adapter, wait 5 seconds, then I press and hold power button for 5-7 seconds. The indicator blinks then the LED lights up (I don't really know what the term of this reset is). Now I see Apple logo and spinning gear.
The gear is spinning nicely first but stops soon. It looks like the system is not responding any more.
Then I have to press and hold power button and force it to shut down. I repeat step 1 and now I did a PRAM reset (option+command+P+R) before it shows me the apple logo. After the PRAM reset is done and it restarts again.
It shows me Apple Logo and spinning gear. Now the funniest thing happened. If I leave it spinning, it probably won't respond again soon. If I keep pressing some keys (e.g. up,down, left, right arrow keys), it will finally shows the login screen. I have tested a few times.
In addition, I have even start it in Verbose Mode, but the DOS-like screen stucks at "PCI configuration begin". I also tried to start it in safe mode but failed.
    Conclusion
If I started it normally by pressing power button once, it sometimes remains black screen. Sometimes it shows Apple Logo without spinning gear.
If I use step 1 method, it aways shows Apple Logo and spinning gear. But it will probably stop responding soon.
If I am pressing random keys while spinning gear still animating, I will most likely get the login screen eventually.
Does anybody encountered this before? Your helps and suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Which version of OS X are you running? If Lion or Mountain Lion, have you tried booting into Recovery mode?
If you're running an earlier version of OS X, do you have the original install discs?
I think - perhaps - that your hard drive may be failing.
    Call back...

  • I've installed Mountain Lion. When I try to print on my Epson R3000, I get a notification of a problem for rasteroescpll.  How can I correct this?

I installed Mountain Lion.  When I try to print on my Epson R3000 I get a notification that rastertoescpll quit unexpectedly.  How can I fix this?

Sorry but that's the very driver that I think caused my problem and I'm assuming Elstel's. Yes it's an Epson Stylus Photo R3000. From the posts I've read the new driver is faulty. Driver V9 seems to work temporarily with my Mountain Lion 10.8.4. It worked perfectly when I set up my new printer and installed the provided software. When I started the day to day suddenly it wouldn't print and I had the rastertoescpll error. My assumption is that my "automatic updates" setting updated the software over night and then it woudn't work. I then tried your link from a previous post and installed that upgrade. No change. I've only been able to print this afternoon by re-installing the printer with the provided disk. If  pixies come during the night and I wake up tomorrow morning with that error message again, after screaming, I will then use my TM to go back to where it worked! Very confused. I was really hoping that Yuengdog1983's solution for the others would have helped me but as I said I've always had my computer named.

  • I recently did a factory restore on my imac mountain lion, but when i try to download OS x again apple is not recognizing my id and password

I recently did a factory restore on my imac mountain lion, but when i try to download OS x again apple is not recognizing my id and password

So, what exactly did you do for a "factory restore"? Which method did you try?
Did you go to the app store > Purchases? Is it listed there?
Or, did you try using the recovery method (Command + R keys or Command + Option + R keys while restarting)? Are you able/unable to reach Apple's servers to download the OS?

  • I am presently downloading mountain lion.  When it finishes, what is the procedure?

I am presently downloading mountain lion.  When it finishes, what is the procedure?

    My recommendation:
    Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Mountain/Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the content of the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
Double-click on the InstallESD.dmg file to mount it on your Desktop.
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the mounted disc icon from the Desktop into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable installer that you can use without having to re-download Mountain/Lion.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.
Once you finish making the flash drive test it by restarting from it:
    Boot Using OPTION key:
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "OPTION" key.
Release the key when the boot manager appears.
Select the disk icon for the USB flash drive.
Click on the arrow button below the icon.
Now install Mountain Lion from the flash drive.
If you are not interested in doing all of the above, then just click on the Install button when the Mountain Lion application automatically opens on your computer after it downloads.

Your wifi problem sounds very much like the problem I had. The wifi would drop out, the icon showed it was still connected. If I turned it off, I couldn't turn it back on. Another user here pointed me to the problem, which was the wifi cable (the flat cable goint from the card to the motherboard). I found it on ebay for $13 and it's been running fine since I replaced it. This is the repair guide for your machine. The part number will be on there if you click the link.

The phone will automatically re-appear when it connects to the Internet. However, don't get your hopes up, as thieves know this & will make sure your phone never re-connects so you can locate it.
