Mountain Lion lost files after reboot!

Hi all. I really need help!
I am currently running Mountain Lion 10.8.3 on my mac book pro. For a long time I had the filtering software known as Safe Eyes installed on this machine. Today I uninstalled it using the correct route via admin login. After it uninstalled it asked to restart so I did a restart. When it booted back up it asked me for my apple ID, like it had never run before which I thought was a bit weird, and I skipped it. To my horrific surprise it factory reset! All of my pictures, music, movies, and important documents - gone!! What I had was the classic desktop with the default dock. The strange thing is that it kept all of my applications that I had downloaded and installed. Also, I have a second internal 500Gb HDD that didn't have anything missing after that.
If it is at all possible, please tell me how to get these files back!!!

luke.un,
you can restore your missing files from your most recent backup. If you haven’t been making backups, you can hire a data recovery firm to see if they can get those files back — but note that their services tend to be expensive.

  • Lost files after reboot

Last night I was having speed issues and things with my MacBook pro, which is 2 years old. So I shut it down for the night to let it rest. When I woke up it would start past the startup grey/blue screen with the apple. So I looked up things to do about this and I ended trying a bunch of stuff.
I reset the PRAM, I held option and selected what I thought was my normal Macintosh HD but now I'm not so sure. I also did the whole fsck thing until it said it appeared to be okay. Finally I held shift and did the safe boot thing and that got the thing going and it turned on.
But when it turned on google chrome had no bookmarks and my folders were gone from my desktop and m iTunes was empty. I thought I had somehow wiped my hardrive but all the items in my trash were still there, the files in my downloads were there, my Mail accounts were perfectly fine and some documents were still there. I don't know what I did. I tried the option start again and the Macintosh HD is labeled as EFI something or other.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

  • My Mountain Lion mac crashes after resuming from sleep

    Hello
My Mountain Lion mac crashes after resuming from sleep every time I use it
It happens every time the mac resumes from sleep and it started like a week ago
I remember installing the new updates for flash? and xquartz and nothing else.
I have also had microsoft word installed on my mac for about 1 weeks before this problem started so might be related to that
Please share with me any tips on how to fix this because I am really annoyed of losing stuff after each time my mac resumes from sleep

I have an iMac bought may -11, and it worked fine with Snow Leopard.
About a week ago I bought and installed Mountain Lion 10.8.2. Everything went fine, and all software worked ok. iPhoto had some problems, but after installing update the system prompted to do, it has worked ok.
The propblem occurs now and then, when computer is waked up from sleep. The Desktop occurs, but no software starts, not even System Tools untlil rebooting the computer. Of course, I can not reboot the computer from "Apple menu", but holding the power button down.
This is very embarassing! OsX Mountain Lion has turned out to be a very big disappointment. I installed id because of iCloud (i have a new iPad, too with iOs 6 installed).
Can anyone help me? Is there any other way to solve the problem than re-installing good old Snow Leopard?
I would not like to do that, I bought Mac because I was bored in re-installing and recovering!
    Thank you

Thank you for all of your answer.

I've seen it mentioned on here that a PRAM reset may solve it:
    Reset PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P and R.
You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

That's the Spotlight window, where you can search everything. It has something to do with the subject.
As I told you, if you have an external drive connected to the iMac, disconnect it. Apart from that, restart the Mac, open App Store > Purchases, and see if you can download OS X Mountain Lion again

  • Mountain Lion Lost My Files

I have an iMac (21.5 inch) the newest one...its running Mac OS X 10.7.4...it is the fully loaded package, intel i7 processor, 16GB RAM, 1  256GB Solid State Drive, and 1  2TB ATA Drive...It came with 10.7.4 on the solid state...i downloaded my free copy of Mountain Lion onto my iMac, and put it on the 2 terabyte drive...i use my 2 terabtye for all my files...i am a dj so i use it for mainly music. the solid state has a few added programs and of course the operating system and thats all...when i booted up my imac after installing mountain lion, it booted to mountain lion, but none of my files were there??? so now whenever i turn on my imac i hold down the option key to tell it to boot from the solid state, so i can use and see my files...how to i transfer my files onto mountain lion w/o saving them on an external drive and copying them back onto the computer? am i able to copy mountain lion onto the solid state? i dont wanna erase anything on the computer and dont have any means of external storage...and im not gonna back it up onto the cloud, 2tb of cloud storage is to expensive (if they even offer that much)...any help???

I assume you can see the 2TB drive after booting into Lion? Also: when booted into ML, do you know where your files on the SSD drive are? Can you access them? If you can access your files on the SSD drive while booted into ML, you could just copy them over to the 2TB drive. If you can't access them while booted into ML, you could do the copying while booted into LIon and adjust access. Make sense?

  • Mountain Lion locks up after sleep, mouse is frozen on screen, requires hard reboot with power button

I have a 2007 Core 2 Duo 2.4ghz macbook pro with Intel 320 160gb SSD installed, and 6GB of Patriot RAM. Machine was working perfectly under Snow Leopard, NO ISSUES AT ALL FOR MONTHS!
After installing Mountain Lion the computer frequently locks up, requiring a hard reset holding down the power button.
The lock ups occur about 10-90 seconds after waking the computer from sleep. Everything will appear normal, i can click through some appliations, start typing somewhere, reading an article, or start watch the ipad mini launch video on apple.com, doesn't matter. Then all of a sudden the computer is just completely locked up. Nothing on screen is working, the mouse isn't even moving the system is completely locked up, and does not recover even if left for several hours. I have checked the logs and there's no sign of a kernel panic.
I have tried creating a new blank user profile, reinstalling from the recovery partition, and the issue persists. I've basically stopped closing my computer when i can avoid it, and the rest of the time i have about a %50 chance that i'll be able to work when i open my computer instead of having to do a hard reset.

With the 2007 macbookpro the optical bay was IDE. One of the upgrades i had made was an IDE to SATA adapter that held another sata hard drive in place of the optical drive(which had died). Even though this setup worked flawlessly under snow leopard, the IDE to SATA adapter seemed to be causing some issues with moutain lion when resuming from sleep. After removing the adapter and second hard drive, i have not had the computer lock up on me since.

  • Old Lion Finder bug reappears in Mountain Lion -- lost options

There were a number of problems with the Finder View options under Lion which were fixed bit-by-by, upgrade-by-upgrade.
In general, folder placement was scrambled and view options were lost/reset after certain operations.
Now, with Mountain Lion, some of these problems have resurfaced:
-- I use Show View Options to increase the size of icons and to set the background of a folder to a color
-- I use Mail to attach a file from this folder via the Attach window
When I return to the folder after sending my Mail message, icon size and background color have been reset to default.
In Lion, the Always Show in Icon View option was also reset.
So far this hasn't happened in Mountain Lion.
    Anyone else haveing this problem?
    Janet

I tried and don't see any issues. When you say the "Attach" window, what does that mean? Do you mean the "Share" contextual submenu or button (or does it translate to "attach" from another localization)?
If it is something other than Share submenu, then is that a third-party program that provides that function?
You might consider deleting the .DS_Store file from that folder. Various utilities can remove them, like OnyX, or you can use the Terminal.

  • Mountain Lion randomly crashes and reboots

Please can someone give me some guidance as this is starting to drive me crazy.
    I have a 2011 21.5" imac core i7 2.8 Ghz with 4GB DDR 3 memory AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512MB graphics. Running OS X 10.8.2
A few weeks ago I noticed that when I returned that the system had rebooted and was at the login screen and sometimes had generated a crash report.
I tried several things the last being to completly erase and re-install Mountain Lion which still hasn't cured the random reboots.
The Mac functions perfectly without fault during normal use and only has an issue occasionally after its been sleeping.
Below you will find the lastest crash report this morning at 7am and below that the previous one 29th December.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Thanks,
Both my MBP and IMAC random crashes one or more times per day.
I switched of sharing after your tip and no more crashes on both systems.
I did use Windows sharing on both systems. I just switched of all sharing.
    Regards, Ton

  • Safari 6 in Mountain Lion lost window drop shadow

After I upgraded to Mountain Lion, I have a weird problem with Safari 6: the window does not have the drop shadow, and when the window is activated only the title of the Web page gets darker color in the top bar of the frame. It's a very annoying problem, since there is no visible frame if the Safari window is overlaid on top of another window with white background. This happens only on one user account and on one computer out of the four  that I upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion. I tried to figure out which preference setting controls that, but neither removing all preferences for Safari and starting from scratch, nor copying the Safari preferences from the library of another user account that is fine did help.
Perhaps somebody can tell me how is the coloring of Safari windows handled. Windows of all other  applications are fine -- it's just the Safari's window that gets the problem.

I bit the bullet and created a new account. I wanted to preserve account name, so I deleted the old one, but chose the option to leave the home folder intact (it was renamed to "userid (Deleted)"). Then I moved what I needed to the home folder of the new account. iCloud helped quite a bit, as I did not want to move any of the ~/Library content. VirtualBox VMs moved quite nicely with the use of File->Add. Dropbox took some time to sync, but Google Drive refused to reconnect to the folder; thank goodness I have gigabytes on the former, and just a few files on the latter. Time Machine is busy, of course, but... Mountain Lion looks like Mountain Lion now
It's been much faster than trying to fish around for the solution to the problem. Still, I am actually interested in discovering how exactly the windows are decorated on Mountain Lion. The developers of Mac themes must know, but I do not know any of them

  • Mountain lion download fails after 53mb

Download for Mountain Lion fails after 53MB, any idea why?

Yes, the area after 53MB has a bad sector on your hard drive and can't write the data any further, this is especially confirmed if you downloaded twice and it stops in the same spot again.
It might be a data cap by your ISP if you have such a thing, or if this only occured once, it could have been a network glitch, try again to confirm. Check in Activitiy Monitor that you have enough free space on the drive, it's ideal to keep below 80% filled on hard drives. If you need to remove stuff, start with Movies copy to a external drive and delete the originals, then reboot so OS X will know the new space is available.
If it stops again, and you don't have any other reason. What you can do is open Disk Utility and select the Macintosh HD partition on the left and Erase > Erase Free Space with the Zero Data option.
What this will do (after some time as it takes quite a bit to perform) is to write Zero's across all the Empty or Free to be overwritten space on your Macintosh HD boot partition (not your data), in the process it checks the write for confirmation (which if it doesn't work) on bad sectors the hard drive will map off that bad sector, never to be written to again.
After this has completed, reboot the machine and try your download again.

  • I can not BUY Mountain Lion - Licensing File???

I try to buy OS X Mountain Lion already since a few hours (more than 16 to be exact) but it always comes up with an error message.
    When pressing "buy" botton:
"Your purchase can not be finalized. The product distribution file couldn´t be validated. It is possible that it is damaged or not signed correctly."
So, why do I have to worry about distribution of Mountain Lion? I am the customer and want to buy, not sell!
Apple isn´t responding on my question so far ...
How can I get / buy ML finally?
I´m on the german appstore and so the message was freely translater (as close to the meaning).
Or is Apple having problems with the file for other countries?
    Any help appreciated.
Tried already starting mac up, logging out and into account deleting cache ...

If you have anti virus software installed, disable that before downloading apps.
Turn off the Firewall in System Preferences > Security (or Security & Privacy) > Firewall
If that doesn't help, open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:
    ~/Library/Preferences
    Click Go
Move these files from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
    com.apple.appstore.plist
    com.apple.storeagent.pllist
    Now here:
    ~/Library/Cookies
    Click Go
Move the com.apple.appstore.plist file from the Cookies folder to the Trash.
Empty the Trash, try the App Store.
If nothing above has helped, installing the  OS X Lion Update 10.7.4 (Client Combo) reinstalls the App Store for.
It's ok to do this even though you are already running v10.7.4. Restart your Mac after the combo is installed then launch the App Store.
If that didn't help either, quit the App Store if it's open.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar top of your screen click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
    Click Go
Move the NetworkInterfaces.plist file from the SystemConfiguration folder to the Trash.
Relaunch the App Store and try downloading MLion.

  • Help! Clean install Mountain lion, nothing happened after entering Apple ID

I have a Macbook Air 11 (mid-2011). Recently I have purchased Mountain lion from App store and upgraded it with no problems. But I would like to have a clean installation to clear all my previous settings and installed Apps.
I pressed 'Option' to restart the computer to Recovery mode, run 'Disk Utility' to erase the harddisk, then clicked 'reinstall OS' to start the installation.
The first few steps look good, when it comes to select a partition for installation, I selected the harddisk and clicked 'Continue'. Then it prompts me to enter my Apple ID and password, I entered it, then the prompt box disappeared with nothing to happen. I then tried to click 'Continue' again, the input box prompted again to ask me for my Apple ID and password, I entered again and, again, nothing happened.
First I thouhg it may be the network problem, so I click 'Continue' again and this time I entered a wrong password. But it can warn me that my password is incorrect, which means the system can actually connect to the internet.
I then opened the log window, and see the following error messages:
localhost Unknown[287]: 2012-08-02 09:29:52.489 Install OS X Mountain Lion[312:1803] Couldn't find app store version, falling back to hardcoded
localhost Install OS X Mountain Lion[312]: Can not connect to /var/run/systemkeychaincheck.socket: No such file or directory
    Please help!!
    Thanks in advance.

I have had this problem today as well, I phoned Apple and they said it's a known issue that they don't know how to fix it at the moment. I can't get past the grey start up screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel. I can get in to the recovery utility but can't download ML.
I went to a repair centre earlier today and they installed it from a disk they had made themselves and it booted twice after that and then died again.
I've booked in for them to call me tomorrow morning so I'll see what they have to say.

  • My mountain lion lost

i buied mountain lion and removed it from my punchers. why do i buy it again when needed

Make sense?
