Mountain Lion Mail.app Sends Email Several Times While Drafting Reply

Using Mail.app in Mountain Lion and the default configuration of Gmail via IMAP (as configured by Mail.app) when I reply to an existing message, Mail.app sends the partially completed email message several times while I am drafting the message, without me hitting the send button. This does not occur when composing new messages. I have not yet determined what is causing the message to send. My working theory is that it is sending the message each time a draft is saved to the server. Any insight on what is happening (or confirmation that other people are experiencing the same behavior) would be appreciated.

I have 4 accounts running, 2 POP and 2 IMAP, after doing some checking today with a mac engineer online, it appears that it is incoming mail only affected and only on the POP accounts. I had previously tried recreating the accounts but as from today even just quitting Mail and reopening no longer works... the engineer has had to exculate my call to a specialist who in turn has now had to send it off to a specialist team to work on. When I get results, I will post them in case it helps someone else.

  • How do I stop Mountain Lion Mail from downloading emails?

I create html newsletter emails for a church organization using a combination of Dreamweaver, Safari and Apple Mail.  Since I moved to Mountain Lion, however, I have an Apple Mail problem.
Our organization uses an AOL email address.  Under Lion and previous OS's, I was able to create the organization's account in Apple Mail, unclick "Include when automatically checking for new messages" in Mail Preferences, click "Enable this account" in Mail Preferences, and be able to send the finished email without routinely downloading all the emails from the organization's AOL inbox.  Although I've followed this same procedure in Mountain Lion Mail, the app still insists on downloading their emails!!  Is there any other switch to shut it off?
Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks. Unfortunately, I have several email accounts in Mail.  'Sorry, I didn't indicate this before.  Prior to Mountain Lion, I was able to set Mail to automatically download email for all accounts except the organization's. Although the "Include when automatically..." checkbox in the organization's specific account preferences seems to provide this control in ML ... it doesn't

  • Mail app sends emails with headers in body.

I use Mail.app to access my MS Exchange account. When replying to the end of a long email thread, the people I send the email end up seeing the headers after references. I know it's possible it's on the other users end, but if there any way to fix this problem on my end?

    Hi Tom,
Do you see those long headers when you initially receive the message?
If you do, then you can change that by going to Mail/Preferences/Viewing and change "Show header detail" to "Default" or "None". You can also customize what is seen in headers.

  • Mail.app sends emails too soon

For the past six months or so, Mail.app has been sending emails while I'm halfway through composing them. I'm not accidentally hitting the Send button, or typing the keyboard shortcut. So I've no idea what's actually doing it. Is anyone else noticing the same bug?

I haven't seen it mentioned here.
Are your mails plain text or RTF? Are you using any apps or widgets that interface with mail (eg new mail announcers)? Does it always happen or only sometimes? What happens if you disconnect from the internet while composing?

  • Refurbished MacBook Pro Mail app sends email responses to the previous owner

I bought my MacBook Pro refurbished about two years ago, and noticed recently that when I send emails through the Mail app, I don't get the responses. I quickly found out that, when I send emails through Mail, it sends under the email of my MacBook's previous owner, and so when people respond to these emails, they get sent to her.
I tried looking it up and I can't find anyone who's had a similar problem.
Also, just to rule out one option, when I go to edit the accounts in Mail, I have the mailbox under my email address. Could it be something with my Apple ID?Has this happened to anyone else?

I doubt you want just a pig-pile in your inbox.
Create categories like Taxes, Services, Friendly correspondence, Online Orders, Apple Discussions. Move the emails into the folders and they survive on your Mac.

  • Duplicate MIME headers when Mail.app sends email

Looks like Mail.app is sending two MIME headers:
    Mime-Version: 1.0 (Apple Message framework v928.1)
    Mime-Version: 1.0
Is there anyway to stop this?
I think it is what is breaking the DKIM signing for me. (Thunderbird, webmail etc works find sending DKIM signed mails, but Mail.app and my iPhone mangle the signature somehow).
    Thanks,
    James.

This is a little screen shot of it.
I am new to mail.  And I have it set up with Gmail and IMAP.  And every so often it keeps sending me back my deleted messages.  At first it was 2000 message lots.  And as the screen shot in the link shows.  One time it wanted to send me 8000 messages.  I just want my deleted messages to stay deleted.  From Mail, from Gmail, from everything.  But they don't seem to want to stay deleted.  I don't know if I have det up anything wrong.  But it's pretty frustrating.
If anyone can help me I'll be really appreciative.

They are being sent to the All Mail folder.  The inbox is pretty much unaffected.
I don't want to hide the All Mail folder and forget about it.  I am after the messages gone forever.  Especially from the All Mail folder.
I'm the kind of person who uses email like sms.  I use it to contact people annd delete 95% of the messages after reading.  I don't want them archived.  I don't want them stored in the All Mail folder.  I want them totally gone.
And yes it seems Mail is downloading all my messages over and over.  So my question is how to stop the messages being stored/archived and to instead be totally deleted.
In the gmail settings I found:
Auto-Expunge off - Wait for the client to update the server.
When a message is marked as deleted and expunged from the last visible IMAP folder:  Immediately delete the message forever.  Instead of archiving it like I had set before.  I'm not 100% sure if that'll fix the issue I am having.  I'm sure you'll be able to tell me if I am on the right track.
And thanks for the quick reply.

Is there any other mean to get the mountain lion.
    I ve a 512kbps connection.

I believe you have correctly identified your 512kbps connection as the source of the problem.
The Mountain Lion download is more than 4 gigabytes.  You should try hard to find a much better, faster, more robust connection.

  • Mountain Lion Mail - Replying From Wrong Email Address

    Hello-
In Mountain Lion Mail, when I click reply to an email, the FROM filed is the same account the email was sent to.
If I have a rule applied to a message that delivers it to a different folder when it arrives, if I click reply, it uses my default email address, and not the email address the message was sent to.
To be clear, if I hit reply to a message that doesn't have a rule applied, then the action works fine, and it uses the email address it was sent to.
The problem only happens when I have an incoming email routed to a different folder in Mail, based on a set rule in preferences.
Driviing me crazy of course. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

I reported this problem to Applecare and reached a CPU Senior Technical Advisor (2nd level support), who was able to duplicate the problem.  He reported the problem to Engineering, which got back to him with the following information:
Engineering was aware of the problem
No decision had been made regarding when or if the bug will be fixed.
He suggested that I also report the problem to <http://www.apple.com/feedback/>, which I have done.
I would like to suggest that the other poster to this thread also report the problem through the feedback page (pick the Mac OS X option and select Mail on the feedback form).  The more people who report this, the sooner Apple is likely to fix it.
Here is what I wrote in part: "The reply function does not work properly in Mac OS X Mail when I reply from any mailbox other than Inbox.  When I reply to an e-mail that is in any other mail box other than Inbox, Mail selects the default e-mail account to put into the "From" field instead of the e-mail account to which the original e-mail was sent.  This worked properly in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is broken in Mountain Lion."  I also gave the Case # of my report to Applecare.

  • How to downgrade from Mountain Lion back to snow leopard with Time Machine

The final straw was the horrible mouse sideways page wiggle while trying to scroll down and read safari pages. Even after turning the feature off, tech support said it will still wiggle a little. That and the HORRIBLE grey icons everywhere was enough to send me back to my beloved iMac I loved when I bought it. I'll give up the iMessage and the few new items ML gave me. But as many others said, what I got new was far less than what was taken away.
So what tech support had me do was this. Even though the apple engineers said it would not work, apple tech support had me try it and it worked for me so good luck. Engineers said that after you install mountain Lion, it messes with ALL your time machine back ups and won't revert back to snow leopard even if you select a snow leopard date back in time.  That didn't happen to me.  I have a 2010 27 inch iMac
This worked for me but PROCEED AT YOU OWN RISK
Export individually any email folders or photos or data you will lose between now and the date you are reverting back to.
    1. Insert Snow Leopard DVD that came with computer. The install disk not the applications. Make sure time machine external drive IS connected.
    2. Restart computer and when you hear The Mac chime, hold down the C key and then it will take several minutes to boot up from the DVD.
    3. Select the little blue triangle to continue in English.
    4. When it gets to the screen that says "continue" stop. There might be a screen or two before this one I can't remember but either way stop at the word continue.
    5. Go up to the top left and find the UTILITIES pull down menu and select disk utility.
    6. In the window that opens up, Select the Apple drive which should be the very top one in the window.
    7. Select erase.. it should be Mac OS extended journaled
8 select erase and maybe a password. It only takes a few seconds
9 go back up to UTILITIES in upper left and then select restore from time machine or backup or whatever it says. It's the last choice.
    10. Select the external time machine drive and navigate to the date you last had Snow Leopard running and that will be the date it restores to. You will lose any data between now and then but you can export your mail, export photos, and other items separately. I only stayed on ML For a few days before hating it enough to go back so I had no loss of data except a few emails.
    11. Hit RESTORE. And then it will take several hours. When you restart it, it should come right back to that day you selected as if ML  was just a bad thought on someone's drawing board.   If for some reason it still comes up ML, Then they said to erase HD Again (steps 1-8) and then manually drags back USER folder or individual folders with Mail, photos etc.   if this way doesn't work, have another plan printed out so that you are not stuck by this one.
Good luck. Proceed at your own risk..

    The ultimate solution:
You need an USB of at least 5 GB and the Snow Leopard Install DVD.
    1. make a bootable USB with Disk Utility in it:
         a. download the Mountain Lion Installer from the App Store
         b. quit the installer after download
         c. find the installer in the Applications folder
         d. option+click in it and select "Show Pakage Contents"
         e. go to Contents>SharedSupport to find there the InstallESD.dmg file and mount it by double-clicking it
         f. with the Disk Utility, restore its contents into your USB
    2. boot from the USB:
         a. restart the computer and hold-down the option key while booting
         b. select the USB and boot
    3. run the Disk Utility and format in ONE partition the HD of your computer
REMEMBER: BACKUP YOUR HARD DISK BEFORE DOING ALL THESE, YOUR DISK WILL BE EREASED AND DATA BECOME UNRECOVERABLE OTHERWISE
    4. insert the Snow Leopard DVD and reboot from it
    5. follow the on-screen instructions to install OS X 10.6
After this, you can, if you will, upgrade to Lion or stay in Snow... Good Luck!!

  • Mountain Lion Mail randomly deletes messages: locally and from server

    Hello,
Mountain Lion Mail deletes mails randomly, locally and from the IMAP server.
I have confirmed this for a fact:
    - I have been forwarded lost mails to another (webmail) account: the timestamps indicate that some mails were lost somewhere before I ever saw them on Mail
    - my mail service provider confirmed that their logs show mails that I never saw on Mail
    - the lost mails don't appear via webmail, either, i.e. they're not on the server
Others are experiencing the same in Lion:
    http://www.seifi.org/email/lion-mail-app-deletes-imap-emails-without-notice-gmai l-important-fix.html
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3206902
I became aware of this as my customer referred on the phone to messages from them that I had never seen. And, Mail deletes messages randomly from the IMAP server too - it's literally eating messages!
No, this is not a rule issue. No, this is not anything I could have done to cause. This should be evident as very many others are experiencing the same (see the above links).
This is the worst bug I've ever encountered in any Apple product.
Apple need to acknowledge this and address it, like, immediately.
Is there a fix for this? One that works 100% - I really can't risk not receiving business e-mail.
    br Janne

I'm experiencing something similar. I see a message being received in Mountain Lion via notification. When I'm going to look for this mail, it's gone.
I dont't have any rules set up and no mail plugins installed. The mail is also vanished from the server. I'm using IMAP on my own web-site (via a service provider). I was able to verify, that a certain message from a certain sender dissapeard, which had a PDF attached. I thought it might have something to do with my ISPs virus protection, but they a) insured me, that they don't delete any mail and b) I got a new mail from someone I don't know this morning. Again: Saw the notification, afterwards the mail is gone.
For now, I will switch to ThunderBird (this was also the recommendation of my ISP).
    Kind regards
    Marco Heine
