Mountain Lion Mail problems

I have mountain lion installed on a MBP i7 2.7 GHz and Mail has gone nuts.  It won't open a new mail viewer window under the file menu but will under the window menu.  When it does it doesn't display any messages in any folders, the toolbar has no buttons or search field.  When I open preferences and check then uncheck "make this account active" the messages all appear, but the other display issues continue.
I can send and receive mail but repairing permissions and restarting make no difference.
It all started after I ran disk warrior after the machine wouldn't restart.
Can I reinstall Mountain Lion or Mail?  I'm really at odds with this.  Thanks in anticipation.

Command+r will boot to the Recovery HD partition and then when you select Reinstall Mac OS X it will download Mt Lion for the Apple web servers, IE from over the Internet.
You could and should make your own Mt Lion install USB thumb drive. There are many articles on how to do it and I've found this program the best for astually making the USB thumb drive.
Mene1, I found the discussions useful but there were so many fixes that worked for some and not for others - some of which I tried - that I resorted the reinstalling ML as you suggested.
Shootist 007 completed the picture so I feel that now I have a workable strategy if it happens again.
Essentially if Mountain Lion Mail is going nuts and you have zapped the PRAM, repaired permissions and started to fiddle with files in the library I for one would go straight to a reinstall as described by our guru friends.
I will definitely be making a bootable USB of ML - how do I ensure I have the latest version or do I have to run software update staight after an install from USB (I'm guessing the COMMAND R procedure installs the latest update since it downloads ML direct from the server.)
Thanks so much.

  • Mountain Lion/Mail problem

Since installing Mountain Lion, Mail slows down to a crawl every few days (I've purged every cache more than once) and iTunes shuts off out of the blue. Anyone else having these problems?

Since the last couple of ML updates I can no longer send any mails.

  • How do I stop Mountain Lion Mail from downloading emails?

I create html newsletter emails for a church organization using a combination of Dreamweaver, Safari and Apple Mail.  Since I moved to Mountain Lion, however, I have an Apple Mail problem.
Our organization uses an AOL email address.  Under Lion and previous OS's, I was able to create the organization's account in Apple Mail, unclick "Include when automatically checking for new messages" in Mail Preferences, click "Enable this account" in Mail Preferences, and be able to send the finished email without routinely downloading all the emails from the organization's AOL inbox.  Although I've followed this same procedure in Mountain Lion Mail, the app still insists on downloading their emails!!  Is there any other switch to shut it off?
Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks. Unfortunately, I have several email accounts in Mail.  'Sorry, I didn't indicate this before.  Prior to Mountain Lion, I was able to set Mail to automatically download email for all accounts except the organization's. Although the "Include when automatically..." checkbox in the organization's specific account preferences seems to provide this control in ML ... it doesn't

  • Mountain Lion Mail cant print or save multiple messages???

The question is not a question because I already know.....
Mountain Lion Mail obviously cant print or save multiple messages !
There are multiple threads about that, but I couldnt find any solution :
I want to export a full folder of mails (emlx) to single PDFs
and I want to have the Images displayed ! (Lion Mail could do that!)
saving as RTF just shows a link and not the image if it is just a linked image
and saving multiple mails doesnt work anyway. same for printing (and save as pdf)
did anybody run into this... maybe find another solution?
automator doesnt really help on this, too, and i dind find any tool.
word opens emlx files, but the image is displayed just as a 1x1cm thumb
    that is really annoying !

I restarted the iMac and now it seems to allow this operation - so I consider this problem resolved for now.

  • After Updating Mountain Lion, Mail & Safari keep crashing; WLAN Connection fails

    After Updating Mountain Lion, Mail & Safari keep crashing; WLAN Connection fails;
I have updatet Mountain Lion and since then, Mail & Safari keep crashing plus: WLAN Connections keeps on failing from time to time.
My Router has the newest firmware, i am clueless what to do.
I even cannot shut down my mac properly.

    Hello you all,
I also had the problem of a disconnecting wifi while my imac was sleeping. I did not have the reconnecting issue after sleep, but the lost connection issue during sleep which made it impossible to reach my imac for things like homesharing, apple tv or remote desktop. I have a late 2012 iMac with a clean ML 10.8.2 on it and wirelessly connected to an apple time capsule (same as an airport extreme). My partner has a mid 2007 iMac, also with an ML 10.8.2 on it.
I tried every single solution I could find on the internet, such as changing the router's security from wpa2 to wpa, changing the MTU from automatic to manual 1453, router reboots, re-installations, re-configurations, keychain clean-ups, everything.
Eventually I solved my problem with these steps and now it works as a charm. I can still find the iMac with the remote app, even after 12 hours of sleep:
My time capsule router is set on automatic MTU and encrypted with WPA2 and I use  the 5Ghz network!
    1. Cleaned all the wifi passwords in keychain on my iMac
    2. Created a new network location in system preferences
    3. In this location I deleted the bluetooth pan and bluetooth dun connection.
    4. In this location I changed the preferred connection-order to wifi on #1 and ethernet on #2.
    5. Restarted my iMac.
Now I still have a connection when it sleeps and I can wake it to low profile using the remote app (homesharing) and everything works fine.
Hope more people wille be helped by this.

  • Spinning beachball in Mountain Lion Mail - HELP !!

    Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion
Mail is full screen and has a spinning beachball - I cant minimise the screen - I can swipe to bring up the desktop or anyother program, however whenever I go back to Mail I get the beachball.
So - I have done a 'Force Quit'
When I reopen Mail it defaults immediately to the full screen and then seconds later the spininng beachball starts.
I have done a full restart, Mail starts up the same way with the same problem.
I have held the power button in and done a PRAM reset - I still get it opening up the same way.
I've been to Disk Utility and done the verify and repair disk but the utility finds no problems, therfore nothing to repair.  I'm running out of ideas!
    Help!

    If arthur's suggestions don't work -
    Quit the application.
Hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.mail
Move the folder to your desktop.
Open the application and test. If it works okay, make sure your mail is there, and then delete the folder from your desktop.
If the application is the same, return the folder to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/04/show-library-directory-in-mac-os-x-lion/
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.4. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

  • Mountain Lion Mail - Replying From Wrong Email Address

    Hello-
In Mountain Lion Mail, when I click reply to an email, the FROM filed is the same account the email was sent to.
If I have a rule applied to a message that delivers it to a different folder when it arrives, if I click reply, it uses my default email address, and not the email address the message was sent to.
To be clear, if I hit reply to a message that doesn't have a rule applied, then the action works fine, and it uses the email address it was sent to.
The problem only happens when I have an incoming email routed to a different folder in Mail, based on a set rule in preferences.
Driviing me crazy of course. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

I reported this problem to Applecare and reached a CPU Senior Technical Advisor (2nd level support), who was able to duplicate the problem.  He reported the problem to Engineering, which got back to him with the following information:
Engineering was aware of the problem
No decision had been made regarding when or if the bug will be fixed.
He suggested that I also report the problem to <http://www.apple.com/feedback/>, which I have done.
I would like to suggest that the other poster to this thread also report the problem through the feedback page (pick the Mac OS X option and select Mail on the feedback form).  The more people who report this, the sooner Apple is likely to fix it.
Here is what I wrote in part: "The reply function does not work properly in Mac OS X Mail when I reply from any mailbox other than Inbox.  When I reply to an e-mail that is in any other mail box other than Inbox, Mail selects the default e-mail account to put into the "From" field instead of the e-mail account to which the original e-mail was sent.  This worked properly in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is broken in Mountain Lion."  I also gave the Case # of my report to Applecare.

  • For all like me who have been fooled by rss disapearing in Mountain Lion Mail

I have read lots of threads regarding the discontinued support of RSS feeds in Mountain Lion Mail, but unfortunately, after I have installed Moutain Lion (I am really angry with Apple not to have communicate on this point and to have discover it at the end of the install!).
So, after reading a lot on the subject, here's what I have made to get back everything I needed.
First, I wanted to get all my saved articles back. For this I have gone in ~Library>Mail>V2>RSS> (you have to show hidden files) Here you have the list of your old rss mailboxes. Select the ones you want to restore and drop them into a folder that's not hidden (in a folder on your desktop for example) because you won't be able to see this folder in the file selection window in the next step.
    Then go to Mail->File->Import mailboxes
Select "Apple Mail". Then go to the folder previously created and select all the .mbox files you moved in.
Now you will have a new mail box with all imported subfolders and alle your saved articles. You can then rearrange them as you like.
Now, to renew your feeds subscriptions, you have no other choice than to use another rss app. And to find all your feeds links, go to ~Library>Mail>V2>RSS> or the folder previously created and in each .mbox open the info.plist file. In each file look for the string in front of "RSSFeedURLString", double click on it and copy and paste it in your new rss reader.
It's not a clean solution, it's quite long (mainly for the import of rss feeds in the new reader), it forces to have old saved articles in mail and new ones in the new app, but that's the only solution I have found.
If anyone has a better one, I think lots of us will appreciate.
PS: please accept my apologies if everything is not clear, as English is not my mother tongue

Can anyone recommend a good RSS reader? One I can use on my Mac and iPad?
I wrote one to integrate with Mountain Lion's notifications. The iPad version is not yet available. You can download it from: http://www.etresoft.com/etrefeed

I just noticed I have to run spell check when leaving a post here. The old Safari would automatically redline misspelled words.
Seems that they are taking many things away when we upgrade- don't understand.
That is a function of the forum software. Safari 6 has nothing to do with it.

  • In Mountain Lion, Mail why no "view as icon" option

I used to be able to compose a message, attach a PDF and right click to "view as icon." Now when I attach, I see a preview of the doc. When I save as a draft, the PDFs appear as icons. When a PC user receives them, will they arrive as PDF attachments icons only showing or will it show a preview of the doc in their opening window?

In Mountain Lion mail, it is still possible to switch between a preview and an icon of an attachment.
How somebody else is seeing it when he/she is receiving it it totally up to their mail app. It has nothing to do with PC or Mac or whatever system they use.
So you have basically no real chance to control what the receipient will see when looking at your mail.

  • Need to delete an unsent message in Mountain Lion Mail

I attempted to send a mass e-mail in Mountain Lion mail to over 300 recipients.  The application would not let me do so, so I broke the mailing list up into smaller lists and sent multiple e-mails, which worked.  But now mail constantly notifies me that it cannot send the original e-mail to the multiple recipients.  Is there any way to delete this message?  It doesn't show up in the drafts or sent files, nor in the folders on the iCloud server.

Initially it wasn't showing up in drafts, but after quitting and restarting the application it appeared there and I was able to delete it.  Thanks!

  • How do you setup HTML signatures in Mountain Lion Mail?

    Hi,
Any help with this issue will be very much appreciated.
I have just updated to Mountain Lion, it seems to work ok aside from "Mail signatures".
I am creating a new signature for my company and noticed that in Mountain Lion, mail creates a new signature with the .mailsignature file type. When I try to replace it with my .webarchive file, it does not work. Has anyone figured out a way to get my HTML signature into Mail?

  • Mountain Lion Mail - bin items will not delete

I use Mountain Lion Mail and use Google IMAP.  In mail box behaviours I have it set to Trash-> move deleted messages to the trash mailbox.  The items go the bin.  However when I got to Mailbox-> Erase deleted items nothing happens.  In Gmail I have it set to delete immediately.  But nothing seems to work in Mail.  I have 16,389 message in the bin!!!! How do I delete these messages rather than going in one by one? Trash under the Top right hand heading of Mailboxes does delete it is just the bin that does not erase any emails.  IMAP in Gmail is set to Auto-Expunge On - Immediately update the server (default). Do I have a setting wrong somewhere?

    Try reinstalling Mountain Lion:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
