Mountain lion messages problem

Hi
I have just set up my new imac, but I'm having problems with Messages.
I've set up my account, but can't seem to connect to people I was in regular contact with in ichat on the old system.
My status shows as online in the application menu (Messages > My status), but offline in the menubar
There also seems to be no way of making custom status items - or have I missed something?
Tamasin

HI,
You missed something (at least from the  way I am reading your post).
Messages is capable of doing everything that iChat could/can do  and also has the iMesages ability.
An iMessages account does not replace any of the other Accounts (IM Screen Names and IDs) you were using before.
iMessages needs an Apple ID.
This can be separate from your Apple Support Communities Login and your iTunes Account or even any iCloud Account you might be using separately.
If in iChat you had an AIM Login with an AIM or Apple issued (AIM Valid ID) or a Jabber (includes Google ID) then these need to be added to Messages.
This is done in the normal way (The + icon at the bottom of the list in Messages > Preferences > Accounts)
Or you can enable them in System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars (for the Messages app)
The Menu Bar icon refers to Buddy lists (non iMessages Accounts or iChat Accounts if you like) in terms of Status.
The Messages Menu > Status should apply to the Same Buddy List(s) as opposed to the iMessages account.
It sounds like you have only set up an iMessages account.

  • Mountain Lion Messages won't connect / go online

For the last few days Mountain Lion Messages won't connect / go online. Prior to that it would disconnec at random and it would be difficult to make it connect again. But now it's totally refusing to go online.

I solved the problem, with the help of a friend!
Turns out, even though Messages in Mountain Lion won't prompt you about this in any way, there is a difference between your @mac.com email and your @me.com email.
Messages on Mountain Lion has an iChat built in, but is actually at the same time a new protocol which does not use AIM like iChat. So, it's both AIM iChat and something new.
As soon as I added a new account inside Messages on Mountain Lion with @me.com I could reconnect and all is fine.
Apple, this is a lot less obvious to the end user than you might think. You have switched online services a few time and it always gets better and better. But Messages in Mountain Lion should prompt the user to add the @me.com address if this is required to use the software!

  • Mountain Lion WiFi Problems (recap)

Folks, wanted to recap this as I am finding the problem much more broad than my original post (here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19123146#19123146). Here's my setup:
    MacBook Air 13", Mid 2011
    Mountain Lion
Wifi Problems, cannot connect to open wi-fi and Sprint hot spot.
CAN connect to Time Capsule (at least I could before I started futzing with my setup while on the road)
here's what I've done so far:
    Reset SMC
    Zapped PRAM
    Reduced MTU to 1300
    Set hotspot to 802.11g only
    Set IPv6 to Local-link only
Set up a new user account, no connection there either
    Repair disk
    Repair disk permissions
Removed WiFi in networking control panel and re-add.
Remove the network from control panel AND remove keys from Keychain
What I have not done but will try later:
    Reinstall ML
    Disable WMM
    Observations:
ML seems to think there is a connection to the wi-fi, but it can never get an IP address
Using a static IP on the network doesn't help the problem
My hotspot never really registers the MBA as a connection

Tell you what worked for me .. finally.
Had two Apple technicians on the case - over the phone. Have to say, those guys are awesome! - with patience of saints! But to the point! As there was nothing obviously wrong with operating system, they promised to call me back the following day but suggested talking to my Internet Service Provider about the router (D-Link router). The ISP remoted to my iMac and logged into router site and changed channel selection from automatic to manual. He chose channel 13, and suddenly my MBA connected and has been connecting smoothly ever since. The reasons I had problems was that there was over 10 available wi-fi networks in my flat, some of which showed as having stronger signal than my own. The ISP guy told me this, increasingly, becomes and issue, especially in blocks of flats - the ether is  filled with wi-fi networks to the point of saturation. He also said, his choice of channel 13 was just a fluke and it might turn out I'd have to change it again.
So, although the problem is now solved, there still remains this one nagging question: Why did the wi-fi connectivity zonked right after Mountain Lion upgrade?

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico, Spanish is my native tongue. I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.

  • Mountain Lion download problems with Lion 10.7.5 (no VirusBarrier issue)

I have a mid-2009 Macbook Pro. From the factory it came with Snow Leopard but has since been upgraded to Lion OS X 10.7.5. I do not have VirusBarrier, I am writing from a recently clean-installed Lion.
I have now been troubleshooting my Mac for several days. When I wrote first, I had an issue with Safari having been damaged and so I wasn't able to reinstall Lion - but after a certain extremely helpful community member I finally succeeded in installing Lion.
But the issues with the App Store still persist. All my Mountain Lion downloads fail, getting the error message "can't verify, might be corrupted" what many here have also been getting. However, most solutions were related to VirusBarrier (which I don't have), or /var/folders errors (Console does not show any var-related errors).
So if it's not a var-related issue, or related to firewalls or virus softwares (I have disabled the Firewall and I have no virus software installed), what could it be?
When the download and install of ML failed last time, Console showed the following messages:
    11/30/12 11:54:44.617 AM com.apple.SecurityServer: Failed to authorize right 'system.install.app-store-software' by client '/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/PackageKit.framework/Versions/A/Resources/in stalld' [235] for authorization created by '/System/Library/CoreServices/Software Update.app' [567]

...and a bit later, upon re-starting the download:
    11/30/12 12:29:40.515 PM com.apple.SecurityServer: Failed to authorize right 'system.install.apple-software' by client '/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/PackageKit.framework/Versions/A/Resources/in stalld' [817] for authorization created by '/Applications/App Store.app' [781]

    Problem elimination:
    * I don't think this is a router-related issue: I have downloaded and installed other softwares outside App Store successfully
    * As said, I don't think this has anything to do with Firewall or Virus settings
    * Nor has this anything to do with /var/folders as far as I can tell
    What I've tried so far:
    * Repaired disk permissions several times
    * Rebooted
    * Restarted App Store
    * Following one advise found on the net, I deleted preflight.pfpkg just in case
    * All the time I have made sure my OS has the most recent Software Updates installed (most of them downloaded successfully, while with Safari and OS 10.7.5. I had to try several times before they were downloaded succesfully)
I just reinstalled my OS X Lion, only to use it to jump on to Mountain Lion - so I am pending my migration until ML is installed. I would like to fix this soon, since I'd like to get the migration done and my real work started. I would really appreciate your help.
I'm not very adept at using Console or Terminal to troubleshoot, so if someone could guide me through the problem identification, that would be great. Unless someone already knows exactly what's going wrong and can show me a working solution - that'd save my day!
    Thanks!

In cases like this, if you have an Apple store near by, they will most likely install the OS free of charge for you, if you can't bring your Apple ID along to prove you've paid for it.
Would that work out for you?

  • OSX Mountain Lion "Messages" will not let me sign in...

I cannot for the life of me get messages to work on the new OSX mountain lion.  I keep getting this alert when trying to sign in:
"COULD NOT SIGN INTO iMESSAGE. The server encountered an error processing registration.  Please try again later."
Any ideas?  I have restarted both my macbook and macpro, reset my apple ID password... no love.

I have spent over 40 hour walking through this issue with Apple senior tier engineering support with Apple for Mountain Lion and Developer support, plus the Apple store genius bar and their high level connection, Getting no where trying to resolve same issue it seems.  The only thing I can get to work is AIM to video chat or share screens.  Messages accounts have added 5 other account .mac accounts and I can not sign into any of them or remove any of them either.  Over time I have had a .mac address that was made into a mobile me address that was then converted into a .mac email again and became a cloud account. And I have a developer account that has a separate name that works with iTunes connect.  When I try to manage accounts to change the password of one it corrupts the the password of the other. When I try the change emails of one it says it is in use by the other.
There are 2 accounts for the iTunes and App Store.
Messages is choking on my 2 accounts and there is a definite unresolved problem with the cloud in regard to them it seems.

  • Mountain lion messages cannot sign in

Just updated my Mac Pro to Mountain Lion.  The messages app begins to walk me through setup, but when I try to log in using my apple ID, it says "Could not sign in.  Please check your network connection and try again."
I have tried my apple ID, my me.com email address, AND my icloud.com address and I get the same message each time.  There is no network problem on this machine.  I connect to the internet and to the other devices on my home network just fine.

  • Mountain Lion Messages behind a proxy

How can I configure messages to work behind my proxy. Usually there is a proxy to put the proxy information in via the application but I am unable to find this field in messages on mountain lion.

There have been quite a few requests on here concerning the very same problem but with the Messages beta -- I was hoping that the "official" release of Messages would somehow solve the problem but I guess it didn't…!?
Let's hope that either Apple fixes this known problem with an update or that someone comes up with a decent workaround…!

  • Mountain Lion installation problem?

Hi, so I have a mid-2012 MacBook Pro and im installing Mountain Lion. I've gotten to the part where the screen shows that it's installing on Macintosh HD with the estimated time. The problem being that it says I am at "About -15 minutes" and it continues to count down. What should I do??

Give it some time. This is an error with the installer. For me, it went down to -20, I think it was trying to find the right disc to install on, but I am not entirely sure or the least bit confident in that answer. If you want, go to Window>Show Log and that will open the install log. You can see what is going on, and some of those messages may give you a clue as to what it is trying to do. If you let it set for some time, it should jump back up to something like 20 minutes remaining and then continue normally.

  • HT1338 Mountain Lion download problems

Tried to get Mountain Lion download/install on my computer.  Got message "An error has occured" so can't download.  Computer is up to date with plenty of space.

Went to Genius Bar.  Solved my problem but I'm not sure how helpful.  He ran some diagnostics (hardware diagnostic progeam; Mac Disk Utility for Hard Drive Verication and repair.  Don't think he found much wrong.  Then, he went for download on their connection, which worked just fine.  He explained it was because of the extremely fast download connection.  So, I guess you have to get your Mac to somewhere with a super-fast connection (Apple store, but also our local libraries have a very fast connection) for download.
That's all for this problem, as far as I can tell.  Over and out.
