Mountain Lion missing font
Hi all,
I have been using a PDF e-book version that comes with one of my school textbooks to read it on my mac, make annotations and such. I have always used Preview; I have never installed Adobe Reader. Today however when I opened the PDF using Preview to continue my reading it started displaying characters incorrectly. I restarted my Mac and the problem persisted. I did an online search and there have been people with a similar problem, most recommended to see if the font had been disabled using font book and/or by going to the "Fonts Disabled" folder under Library. I did checked my fonts and everything seemed to be correct, I enabled the fonts and it didn't work. Other recommended to install Adobe Reader; I did and it didn't work. This is the message I am getting from Adobe Reader: "Cannot find or create the font 'BYGBIR+Helvetica-12-0'. Some characters may not display or print correctly." I don't know what else to do, most of the text is still legible but there is some random missing text and text in graphs' axis and descriptions is unreadable. I included a screenshot of what it looks like. I will greatly appreciate any advice.
Thank you,
Javier.

In Mountain Lion, bold fonts are being rendered misaligned.
In Mountain Lion, bold fonts are being rendered misaligned, like shadowed text, when printed or saved as PDF. See example image. Same text is fine in Lion. Any solutions?
I had this issue as well, googled a bit and found a solution that works just peachy...
1. Open terminal
2. defaults -currentHost write -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 0
3. Restart applications -

HT4818 after installing boot camp 4 on mountain lion " Missing operating system"
Hello
I hade a small Windows 7 partition , so after updating to mountain lion , I wanted resize win partition .
I made an image of it , then deleted win partition from utility disk , ( wrong idea )
I didn’t notice that boot camp could erase win partition , anyway I have tried several times , and always after reboot boot camp
I get the same
Missing operating system .
If I boot from dvd install win or if i boot from the boot win partition.
hd and partitions looks OK to utility disk
Any idea to fix the problem ?I presume that you've followed the instructions for sideloading the iMac Windows drivers into your install via USB stick? (wasn't aware the EFI recognized the SD slot as storage on boot. Now i know)
I always found more success in just slipstreaming the drivers and install.xml file onto a custom Win7 DVD rather than the USB approach when trying with my Late 2009 27" iMac. The Win7 installer needs that enclosed .xml file in the driver package to tell it where to find the drivers so that they be loaded when the Win7 image extracts itself.
If you're using mountain lion, then you should be receiving the proper Win7 driver set. If you wanted to create a custom image, then you can use an ISO file, the driver package and disk utility to make something you can use. Either that or you learn what edits your install.xml file needs to point the installer properly and check it manually.
I don't know what links you have so i'll just include everything:
Installing boot camp on a Late 2009 iMac:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3173
Direct link to Late 2009 iMac-specific Windows drivers.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL995
I'd try a USB stick and the iMac-specific driver set. It should steer your insolent windows installer correctly.
Hope this helps. -
Mountain Lion Missing Report Safari Bugs Menu Item?
I recall a Bug reporting menu option in Safari which seems to have disappeared in the latest version in Mountain Lion. Or am I missing it?
Perhaps the Apple folks think Safari is now perfect. ;-)
I was trying to view photos of this Hilton
http://www.hiltongrandvacations.com/Resorts.aspx#details/index&resortId=93&backF unctionality=0
by clicking the More Photos button, but clicking on Next arrow kept giving an error:
Could not extract width/height from image: http://multimedia.hiltongrandvacations.com/ws/ResortGallery/dynamicImage.cfm?id= 606&width=880&height=530. Traced measures: width:0px, height: 0px.
though the site and photos worked fine when I tried it in FireFox, etc. But, I could not find a way to report it to Apple from within SadFarI.
Is the Report button hidden somewhere in some other menu? Thanks.

Mountain Lion .otf font issue
Hello,
Some of the fonts that I have uploaded onto my mac are not responding properly - mainly the system is not recognising the postscript name and therefore the whole family of a font does not show up in the Adobe Suite.
For Example - if I upload Gotham Family, the files look like this: gotham-medium.otf, gotham-thin.otf etc. Only some of the instences work for example Gotham Thin is available to use in adobe and shows up in my fontexplorer. But the gotham-medium just indicates Gotham (no medium, conflicts with gotham regular and doesn't show up in adobe).
I have gone in and looked at the name of the Gotham family font individully. The ones that don't work have ie: Full Name: Gotham, Name & Extension: Gotham-Medium. If they do work it looks like this: ie: Full Name: Gotham Thin, Name & Extension: Gotham-thin.
My Question is - How can fonts from the same suite react differently? How do I get the ones with the Family Name as Gotham to be known by their postscript extension name?
I've googled my heart out and even tried to just upload them to fontbook with the same issue. Also tried placing in Libray/font folder.
Thank you
Mountain Lion 10.8.5
Fontexplorer x Pro 4First thought. Is Font Book still on your Mac? If it is, get rid of it. You should never have more than one font manager on your system at a time.
1) The OS will tell you it can't delete Font Book if you try to trash it. Ignore the dire warning that it's indispensable. It's not. Highlight Font Book and press Command+I, or choose Get Info from the the top menu bar. Click on the lock at the lower right of the Get Info dialog box and enter your Administrator password. Expand the Sharing & Permissions heading if necessary. There are three permissions states, the first of which is already Read & Write. Change the other two, which are currently Read only, to Read & Write. Close the Get Info box. You can now move Font Book to the trash with no interference from the OS.
2) Next, you need to remove Font Book's database, which will continue to interfere with your preferred font manager even though the app itself is gone.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup chime to boot into Safe Mode. Keep holding the Shift key until you see a progress bar towards the bottom of the screen. You can let go of the Shift key at that point.
OS X asks you to log in (you will get this screen on a Safe Mode boot even if your Mac is set to automatically log in). Let the Mac finish booting to the desktop and then restart normally. This will clear Font Book's database and the cache files of the user account you logged into in Safe Mode.
3) Lastly, clear all font cache data. Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
sudo atsutil databases -remove
Terminal will then ask for your admin password. As you type, it will not show anything, so be sure to enter it correctly.
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and the current user font cache files. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.
Do note that these steps may not solve any issues with the fonts themselves, but it will remove any possible head butting between different font managers. -
Wiki migrated from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion missing some links
Hi
I migrated the wiki instance running on my old Snow Leopard Sever to the new Mountain Lion server following the instructions here
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5082
All looked good, but then I find that some, not all, of the links reference the old server instance and come up wtih 404's.
If I right click on the links that are broken and inspect them the results differ.
the outer html has a reference that looks like this
<a class="cc-route-enabled" target="_blank" href="http://old.server/wiki/pages/G3J0z4r/Clint's_Index.html">Clint's Index</a>
a link that works looks like this
the outer reference is the same but the inner
<a class="cc-route-enabled" href="/wiki/pages/Q4g545J/CMS_Teaching_Infrastructure_2012.html">CMS Teaching Infrastructure 2012</a>
The pages still exist. If you do a find for the link title you can find the page ok.
Is there a way to fix the broken links to remove the absolute paths to the old server?
Cheers
JacquiOK I've managed to retrive my folders by doing the following
1/ Open Finder and click on the Go Menu option
2/ Hold down the Alt key so that 'Library' apperas in the list of folders you can go to
3/ Select 'Library' and navigate to the Mail/Mailboxes folder
4/ Expand the tree and find your personal folders somewhere below that node (each personal folder will have its own .mbox extension)
5/ COPY the folders you want to some different location (eg your desktop). You need to do this as you won't be able to access the original location those files are in in the next couple of steps
6/Go to the mail App and choose File->Import Mailboxes...
7/ Select the 'Apple Mail' option from the 'Import From' section and hit continue
8/ Multiple select all the mailboxes you copied to your desktop in step 5/ above
9/ Now all your mailboxes will appear under an 'Import' node in your mail sidebar
10/ Breath a sigh of relief that you have managed to retrieve your precious personal folders!!!
Not sure why Apple is silent on this issues as obviously loads of people are expeiencing itand the fact that they now hide your library folder by default doesn't help one bit!!!
Anyway hope this helps -
Ok, all was working in Lion. I installed Mountain Lion, and Mail wouldn't open at all (along with several other apps). I ran the 10.8.1 updater and now Mail opens, but it is completely empty.
I restored my mail folder (in users/my user name/Library/mail) using CrashPlan from July 24, 2012 (day before I installed Mountain Lion). Opened Mail, and it is still empty.
Any ideas on how to get my mail back? Time Machine doesn't go back that far.
Thanks! Jim"You really must be a nice guy to have taken the time to seek me out."
Thanks for that but you forgot 'funny'... I'm funny like a clown.
Only joking...
Glad I could help you. I just wanted to help share the love a bit and I wondered whether or not you found yourself with the same deep rooted sense of abject horror that I had when I realised all my email had disappeared.
Wouldn't want you feeling like that now would we... where's the fun in that?

MacBook Pro Retina Mountain Lion - missing keystrokes
Intermittant missing keystrokes. Any app including TextEdit. Not keyboard (happens with attached USB keyboard). Comes in waves (sometimes seems to be ok then comes back). Happens with no WIFI and all other apps off. This thread also applies so generic (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5278987?start=0&tstart=0) This is the most expensive computer I have ever bought and this problem is a total disaster.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -

Mountain Lion - missing menu bar when in full screen mode
Hi,
just installed ML on my late 2008 MacBookPro 15´. Everything works ok except the fact that I lose my menu bar when I switch a screen in full screen mode. Bringing my mouse pointer to the top of the screen usually dropped down the menu bar. Not so anymore with ML.
Does anyone experienced the same issue? Is this a setting preference?
Thanks!I just got QT Pro 7.1.3, but I just can't seem to get rid of that annoying menu bar. Even the older 6.5.1 didn't show the menu bar when in Presentation mode.
Can't really help you. Seems to work properly in OS 10.4.8 for me. May be a bug that only shows up when QT v7.1.3 is used with OS 10.3.9 which needs to be reported. -

Any help would be fantastic, from people with the same problem, or anyone who knows a fix.
I upgraded to Mountain Lion yester on my mid-2010 Macbook Pro, 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M
The graphics are glitching big-time, to the point where the computer becomes unusable, slow and sluggish. Mission control barely opens, and when it does, the screen-spaces up the top showing the desktops glitch out and are barely viewable.
I managed to find a temporary fix, I download gfxCardStatus, which allows you to force the machine to use either the intergrated or discreet graphics. Forcing use of intergrated graphics, ie the intelHD chipset, fixes the issue, so it seems to be a problem perhaps relating to the Nvidia card........
If anyone has an update on this issue, or are experiencing the same thing, im all ears! I'm a designer, so rely on the more powerful discreet graphics, and am only going to get so far running on the weaker intergrated.
Cheers,
James
On Aug 21, NVIDIA driver update 5.0.24 became available for Mountain Lion. This link is for U.S./Canada. In particular, support for the GeForce 300M Series (320 and 330) are included. Anyone want to try this update and report back if it fixes your discrete issues? The usual caveat about backing up the stuff you want to keep prevails. I would also locate and backup the current NVIDIA related kernel extensions, for safe keeping. -
Arial font missing from Mountain Lion
Arial font doesn't appear in Mountain Lion, but all my spreadsheets use it. As a result, when I open any spreadsheet, it appears blank until I change the font. Is there any way I can fix this? Thanks
Arial is a built-in font.
Back up all data.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and the support article linked below for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them, then boot in safe mode* (by holding down the shift key at the startup chime) to rebuild the font caches. Boot again as usual and test.
Mac 101: Font Book
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case only, after running Font Book, launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
sudo atsutil databases -remove
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. After running the command, reboot as usual. -
Reinstalling Default Fonts in Mountain Lion
Hi,
After buying the new iMac and have used it for two day I noticed that some files were in the Trash folder including the Fonts folder (don't ask me how they got there becuase I would swear I didn't move them). Since I didn't know where the Fonts folder belones to (system or user folder) I search on the internet and some people sugested doing a restore using Font Book (File>Restore Standard Fonts), but this made it worse since when it when and check it deletes the existing folders so now I only have the folder that was in the trash and I'm for sure missing one folder.
Is there a way to reinstall the default fonts in Mountain Lion without reinstalling the operating system?
This is the only thing I found but this will reinstall the OS.
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4201528?start=0&tstart=0
Thanks a lotYou can use FontBook to find and delete duplicates.
Have you checked for updates for your iWork?
I did use FontBook to delete the duplicates.
The applications were working fine before the reinstall, I checked for updates but it doesn’t show any for these applications.
My problem with this is that I cannot reinstall these applications since I have them in a DVD and my computer doesn’t have a DVD drive. I installed them sharing the DVD drive from my old MacBook but I sold it two days ago, the only thing I have is an Acer laptop but I don’t know if it is possible to share the drive.
Is there a way to somehow put my DVDs in a USB drive, so I can install them without needing a DVD drive (assuming I can barrow my nephews Mac which has a DVD drive)?
Thanks a lot for your help! -
Photoshop CS6 crashing in Mountain Lion because of fonts
Hello,
Photoshop CS6 keeps on crashing for me when I open a file with text in it. It works fine when creating the text, but as soon as I close the PSD and open it again it crashes on loading the file. If I rasterise the text from another computer and open it it works fine.
I tried deactivating all the non-system fonts, I read that there are some fonts that cause problems and so I deleted those.
Anyone have an answer for this? It seemed to be working fine since Mountain Lion came out, it's only been acting up for the past month or so, don't remember there being an update for either Photoshop or Mountain Lion around that time.
Really need an answer soon as it's adding a lot of time to even the simplest of jobs.
Thanks in advance.

0x7fff8dc0b000 -A few things to keep in mind:
FontAgent Pro (FAP) is an excellent font manager that is very, very good at ferreting out problem fonts, including some that Font Book and Font Doctor often miss. They have a fully functional 30-day trial version.
Beside fonts themselves, font caches are prone to get corrupted. I clean them out routinely with Cocktail. Onyx is a similar utility that is free. Font Finagler is free and only does font cache cleaning.
Many users have problems with FontExplorer, which you have installed and running, according to the crash report.
4 GB is not enough RAM for CS6 running under Mountain Poop. Many of us consider 8 GB to be the bare minimum, 16 GB or more is very desirable.
The 256 MB of VRAM on your graphics card is not enough. The minimum system requirements recommend 512 MB, and many run cards with one or 2 GB of VRAM.
Mountain Poop has not received a single update. Apple doesn't get a major new release right until the dot six release. Lion didn't get past 10.7.4, which explains its many deficiencies. Mountain Poop is at 10.8.0 at this time.
God luck.

"reconnect" old events to the Event Library
I imported a bunch of DV tapes last spring(onto HDD "iMovie VIdeos 1") and everything worked great, but I hadn't used iMovie since then, until this week. I'm now importing old VHS tapes(onto HDD "iMovie VIdeos 2"). This importing is also going well.
