Mountain Lion not  liked by Photoshop as a Scratch Disk

I upgraded a volume to Mountain Lion and now Photoshop (CS6 - 13.0.1) won't let me use the volume as a Scratch Disk.
I could use said volume as a Scratch Disk with the previous OS (Snow Leopard) without a problem — now, when I try to open Photoshop I get a dialog box: "Could not open a scratch file because the disk is not available." I click OK and another dialog box pops up: "Could not initialize Photoshop because the disk is not available." and Photoshop closes.
I made the User > Library folder visible in case PS needed that and I repaired permissions, then I manually changed permissions on the volume to Read & Write for the Wheel (it was set to Read only) all with no success.
Any idea as to why I now cannot use a volume with the Mountain Lion OS as a scratch disk would be appreciated.

I have no problem running PS CS6 with Mountain Lion. I would post in the Adobe support forums:

My IT department installed Lotus Notes and it installed over the top of the Mountain Lion Notes application and thus deleted it. I renamed the Lotus Notes application (originally just called Notes). How do I get the original OSX notes application back?

Ok, found the solution, download mountain lion from the app store once more, then use Pacifist to extract the notes appllication again.

  • Does OS X Mountain Lion not include MPI (Message Passing Interface)?

    Hi,
Does OS X Mountain Lion not include MPI (Message Passing Interface) as Lion did? I need that to compile CUDA 5.0 examples.
I'm running Mountain Lion 10.8 without any updates yet.

I take this statment from the link I posted
Note: Unlike most UNIX-based operating systems, OS X does not use a preallocated disk partition for the backing store. Instead, it uses all of the available space on the machine’s boot partition.
to basically mean it's limited only by the disk space.
    There is also this:
Both OS X and iOS include a fully-integrated virtual memory system that you cannot turn off; it is always on. Both systems also provide up to 4 gigabytes of addressable space per 32-bit process. In addition, OS X provides approximately 18 exabytes of addressable space for 64-bit processes. Even for computers that have 4 or more gigabytes of RAM available, the system rarely dedicates this much RAM to a single process.
To give processes access to their entire 4 gigabyte or 18 exabyte address space, OS X uses the hard disk to hold data that is not currently in use. As memory gets full, sections of memory that are not being used are written to disk to make room for data that is needed now. The portion of the disk that stores the unused data is known as the backing store because it provides the backup storage for main memory.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Please help... "Could not initialize Photoshop becauae the scratch disks are full.

I am using Photoshop 7 on Windows Vista. I just bought a new computer and installed Photoshop (which worked fine on my old computer running XP). It installs correctly but wen I launch it I get the error "Could not initialize Photoshop because the scratch disks are full." Then Photoshop immedietly shuts down.
My C drive has 1.3 TB free, my D drive has 145 GB free and my E drive has 5 GB free. I've tried defragmenting all the drives and deleting any temp files.
I do not know why this is happening and would greatly appreciate any advice.
    Thank you,
    Brad

there's a bug in 7 that causes this on drives with more than 1 TB free. upgrade photoshop to fix it or temporarily fill the drive with garbage or partition it so the free space is less than 1TB.
a side note is that current upgrade policy only gives special pricing to 3 versions back. right now that's version 7. if you wait until cs4 comes out you'll be 4 versions back and will be out of the upgrade path. then if you want a higher version in the future you'll have to purchase a full license again. if planning on upgrading photoshop - ever - suggest you do it before cs4 ships.

  • Could not complete your request because the scratch disks are full

i have more than enough disk space in my PC
not sure at all what this message means: "could not complete your request because the scratch disks are full"
    please help
    Thank you

It means that the operation you tried to do would have filled all of your scratch drives.
Check your Photoshop preferences to make sure you have the drives assigned correctly.  And double check your settings (like the crop tool with a high resolution specified) for the particular operation that fails -- most likely it is trying to create something huge that would fill your scratch drives.

  • Mountain Lion not producing desktop thumbnail image

Since installing Mountain Lion on my Mac Mini, files saved to the desktop from Photoshop CS6 intermittnetly appear without a thumbnail  image. The file name label is present, and if you select the file a dotted line placeholder border appears, but the thumbnail image is not displayed. The odd thing is the thumbnail image is there after a restart. It's a nuisance.
Anyone else experience or know of a better fix than restart (which is only a short term solution for the files already on the desktop).

When you open the Photoshop folder and do GetInfo on the application file, what does it say is the name of the application? Specifically does it say Photoshop.app? If not, try adding a .app to the name. Finder/Launch Services can sometimes get confused by names that end with a dot followed by a number rather than a dot followed by the app extension.  It may also help to reset LaunchServices.  These are only cache files but can get corrupted. Launch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line to rebuild LaunchServices: (be sure to copy the entire line it's a scroll)
    Code:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Then press return. Wait until terminal returns to the command line. Quit Terminal. After that, log out and back in or restart. Let us know   Or, use the free utiltiy OnyX to do the same via gui

  • Messages on Mountain Lion not working

The iMessage Beta worked fine on Lion (except for the delays, sometimes, but hey, it's a beta). After upgrading to Mountain Lion, however, I'm unable to authenticate, send and receive messages.
I've found that running a PRAM reset (pressing a combination of keys when booting) does fix the problem, but it only works temporarily (until the next boot).
I already tried removing all plist-files, doesn't work. Every fix I found (that is: PRAM reset and booting in Safe-mode) only works one "session" (until I reboot).
When trying to sign in, it hangs for about a minute, and then says it "Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again.". I already tried turning off my WiFi, and it still hangs and gives this timeout error (so regardless of wether it's actually supposed to try to sign in).
My console shows the following errors:
When delivery fails (that is always, unless I booted in Safe-mode or performed a PRAM reset) and I get this red exclamation mark:
imagent: [Warning] FTMessageDelivery failed! Error (APSErrorDomain:1): Unable to send outgoing message to apsd: (ipc/send) invalid destination port (null)
This always shows up, about 20 times per actual iMessage I tried to send.
When signing in fails (that is always, unless I booted in Safe-mode or performed a PRAM reset)
imagent: [Warning] *** Listener ID: com.apple.dock.extra  does not have capability: (Chats), not allowing request
Followed by a backtrace of the internal calls in imagent. However, this (both the backtrace and the warning above) do not always show up in my logs.
Based on the fact that it's working fine on my iPhone and iPad, and it's working fine too on the other Macs in the same WiFi network, I don't think it's a router firewall issue.
Based on the fact that I do not have any firewall (nor the built-in one) running, I don't think it's that it's a local firewall issue either. I already checked my hosts-file, nothing there (except for the default localhost routes).
Apple is working on better unified support in iOS 6, don't know if that solves my problem, but personally, I don't think that would really make sense (since it's definitely a local system issue).
I hope I provided you with enough information, but if you need more, don't hesitate to ask me .
I really hope you can point me to a permanent fix! Thanks in advance guys!

    Hi,
I would have opened Messages > Preferences > Accounts and deactivated the iMessages account (Untick the Enable this account)
    Then Quit Messages.
The Restart Messages and then restart the Account.
A Re-install would do it but is an awfully big hammer to use.

  • Time Machine backup on Mountain Lion not restoring

I recently upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion. After the upgrade, I duly take back ups to my two existing time machine back-ups on two external hard disks. I also maintain a separate CCC bootable clone. I recently tried to restore my calendary folder to restore data on my Calendar application but I got the shock of my life when I realised that NO mountain lion restores are working using either of my time machine back ups. BTW I have previously upgraded to Snow Leopard and to Lion, and my Time Machine backup disks have never showed any problems.
I have spent the last 4-5 days trying a variety of solutions, with no luck so far:
    1) I looked at Pondini's website, including restoring data from TimeMachine backup to a dmg image and copying. This failed due to a combination of permissions error and wrong information about size / disk space requriements. In any case, this is not a feasible option since I would prefer restore to work directly, especially for large files and system files, as it did before since this workaround is not really a solution.
    http://pondini.org/TM/E10.html
    2) I followed instructions given at http://superuser.com/questions/35152/how-do-i-retrieve-files-from-time-machine-b ackups-from-another-computer and set ignore ownership via command line and then backed up again, but this did not fix permissions either on the new backup.
    3) I used a separate external hard disk, reformatted it as Mac OSX journaled (not case sensitive) using a GUID partition map, and then backed up my hard disk (~330GB) which took ages but the new time machine back up does not work either.  I still get permissions errors on restore from TM backup.
    4) Using yet another hard disk, I followed advice here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5096
This has not worked either - I still get permissions errors on restore from TM backup.
    5) If I go back to a TM backup dated PRIOR to upgrading to Mountain Lion, all restores work fine from both my exisiting time machine backups. It seems to me that only post Mountain Lion upgrades which don't work. So my conclusion is that it is ML that has introduced some sort of permissions issue.
    6) File restores (i.e. copy paste to my desktop) from the CCC cloned backup proceed wthout a hitch.
At this stage I all I am really trying to aim for is getting a working time machine backup, even if it is a new one which restores properly. That is proving to be a huge challenge. Any help or advice would be very useful indeed. The only option left for me is to now either go to an Apple Store or to call Apple Care, but I am not confident of securing a resolution at either place. So any advice from more experienced users would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • How do I install mountain lion not as an upgrade

    Hi,
I'm running OS 10.6 on my computer. I'd like to upgrade to mountain lion. But instead of installing it over the existing system, I want to format my computer and start it fresh. How can I do that?

If you are running Snow Leopard (10.6.x), update to the latest version of OS X Snow Leopard before you purchase OS X Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store. Click the Apple icon and choose Software Update to install Snow Leopard v10.6.8, the latest version.
When download of Mountain Lion is complete cancel the installation and you may create an installation disk from downloaded source.
How to do it you may find here
    Or
Install it on top of existing system and if there is something that you do not like and think that clean install would make it better, you may start your computer from recovery partition created by Mountain Lion installation, reformat your disk and do clean install.
