I have recently purchased a 2010 Macbook Pro 13'3 with 10.8.3 Mountain Lion pre installed - I have always used windows but recently I decided to get a Macbook,
If I ever need to get the original discs ( I do not have them ) my understanding is that 10.7 upwards is done via the Apple server / online, I would however like to own and burn them to discs in case of a server or internet problem should I need to do a clean install.
Is my Macbook already identified on the server ? ( it must be as I have taken 2 updates already ) and if so can I get the original files as a download .dmg files to burn and keep for myself.
How easy / difficult is it for this to be done

Format a flash drive (8 GB) Mac HFS Extended (Journaled) using Didk Utility.
Go to the Mac App Store and hold down the Option key as you click Purchases, or you may need to Unhide your purchases, to download a copy of the Mountain Lion Installer. Do not run the installer after it downloads.
With the flash drive plugged in to a USB port:
1. Open Disk Utility, click the Restore tab near the top right
2. Drag the volume for your flash drive from the left sidebar into the Destination field
3. Switch to the Finder and fine the installer app in the Applications folder
4. Control-click or right-click the installer app and choose Show Package Contents
5. Inside the package choose Contents/Shared Support
6. Select the file InstallESD.dmg and drag it into the Source field in the Disk Utility window
7. Click Restore button near the bottom right of the window
8. In the confirmation dialog, click Erase
9. Authenticate as Admin - give password for the admin user
10. Could take half an hour for this part
11. When complete, quit Disk Utility
12. Change the new flash drive name with Finder to something description like Mac OS X Install ESD
Eject the drive and you have an installer flash drive that you can use for supported Macs.

As the title says, I can't reinstall Mountain Lion. When I turn on the iMac, it send me straight to OX X Utilities. When I click on Reinstall Mountain Lion, it asks for my ID, but then states I did not purchase Mountain Lion. How do I fix this issue? I've tried asking Apple Support, but to no avail. I don't think the guy I spoke with understood what was going on.
I cannot get around OS X Utilities. There are only four options for me.
Reinstall Mountain Lion
Back Up (tried, nothing comes up)
Get Help Online (which is what I'm doing here)
Erase or Restore Utilities (I've checked this, it says my disks are not malfunctioning)
My friend suggested signing into his ID to reinstall but when we did, it also said this ID has not purchased Mountain Lion. We logged into Apple Support went to registed devices and there was nothing there. I think he may have used another ID which is he searching for the info for. If we get the right ID, then maybe it will let us sign in on his name and reinstall Mountain Lion. But if he can't, or Apple won't take his ID, then I'm at a loss for options.
So now I'm here, hoping someone else who bought a used iMac from a friend who factory reset it and needs info on how to reinstall Mountain Lion can help me. I don't know what else to do. If I can't get this thing sorted out, I'll have to drive to the apple store. The closest one is 60 miles away, so I'm not looking forward to that. Is that my only option now? What can I do?

What are my options?If the system didn't ship with Mountain Lion originally and you didn't purchase Mountain Lion yourself, then you will need to purchase. A purchase by the system's original owner cannot be transferred to you.
Unless you have another system on which you have purchased Mountain Lion, you will need to first install Mac OS X 10.6.8 on the iMac, for which you'll need either the original installation disks, if the iMac came with 10.6, or a retail copy of 10.6. Install 10.6 and upgrade to at least 10.6.6, and then you can buy Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store, presuming of course that the imac can support Mountain Lion. See:

I have a macbook pro 2011 13" that came with OS Lion (integrated not on a disk). I recently bought OS Mountain Lion of the app store and it is working fine. However I was a bit dissapointed in the battery so I decided to try and downgrade and completely failed, I froze the computer and when I restarted it it did not work. I went into recovery system and erased my disk and all that and went to re-download my OS. I was expecting to get the option to re-download Lion but instead I could only re-download Mountain Lion.
My question is since my computer originally came with Lion can I reset my computer so I get OS Lion back instead of OS Mountain Lion?

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

For past year or so my mac book has been getting gradually worse. Spinning wheel, and overheating, last night I had trouble just getting it to start in Safe Mode (been using the on/off button a lot lately!)
Problem may be related to media - iMovie followed by iPhoto are the most likely programs to bring everything to a stop but not always.
I'm not an expert although I did figure out how to re install the operating system from the partition with help from this forum a couple of months ago but it didn't fix the problem.
The iOS is Mountain Lion (via Lion)
I managed to do a back- up last night and now wondering if I should re- install Snow Leopard from the original discs that came with the laptop.
Got a lot of media on there (replaced the 250gb drive with a Samsung 1tb a while back which is less than half full.
Never had to use any of my back-ups before so:
If I re install the original operating system will I be able to be selective in what I put back on later?

there's a fault in the graphics processor or logic board. The two kinds of output are not mutually exclusive, but if you get both, a logic-board fault is likely. -
I had a copy of Mountain Lion on my late 2008 MacBook Pro, having replaced Lion which it came with. But the drive crashed, so I replaced the drive and reinstalled Lion from the original disks I had. How do I get another copy of Mountain Lion?
A 2008 Mac won't have originally shipped with Lion. You need to install 10.6.8 on the computer, log into the Mac App Store with the Apple ID you used to purchase Mountain Lion, click on the Purchases tab, and download it.

how can i get mountain lion reinstalled if my mac says apple id never purchased? hd failed 2 wks after wty expired, I am the original owner, put another hd in, done command-r & sys reinstalled, but it wanted to update & now am stuck. I don't mind paying for mountain lion; it is too far to get to an apple store. but, i only have one mac, so i cannot download with another mac. lots of other apple, but only one mac.
You will need to do a network recovery:
Install Lion/Mountain Lion on a New HDD/SDD
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -

ThanksMy previous answer still stands: Restore from your backup taken before you upgaded to Mountain Lion. For example, a Time Machine backup, a Carbon Copy Cloner clone, or a commercial backup service. Not the disk that came with your computer (which is how I read "OS back up disk").
If you reinstall the original OS from the disk that came with your computer, it will wipe out everything on your computer. (The installer won't install an older OS over a newer one, so you'll have to wipe the disk first.) Then you'll need to restore your data from your backup and reinstall applications like Word. -
Does Mountain Lion checks for original hardware?? (problem with third-party ram)

I am wondering if Mountain Lion does a hardware check for original hardware. I did a RAM upgrade 6 months ago (from 2x2Gb to 2x4Gb Dolphin 1333Mhz DDR3 on a an early 2011 MacBook Pro) and everything went smooth, I really noticed the upgraded performance.
My problem started after a firmware update (I was running Mountain Leopard). The system became really unstable, with a lot of programs crashing randomly and some crash black screens. I then decided to update to Mountain Lion with a fresh install to solve all the problems and clean up my computer.
I did it from a bootable USB drive using Lion Disk Maker and following these instructions with the harddrive completely formatted: How To Make A Bootable Disk Or USB Drive Of OS X Mountain Lion. The installation got stuck half way through and exited without any error message. After checking the log I got an error code (FAILED TO VERIFY ESSENTIALS PACKAGE). After diggin for a couple of days I found out in an old apple support discussion (Failed To Verify Essentials Package On Installation) that the problem could be the non-original RAM. I then replaced the RAM with the original one and finally was able to install the new OS without problems.
After the OS install and setting up my usual programs, I decided to go back to the upgraded RAM for extra performance and the crashes came back as before. So the newer RAM clearly caused the system to become unstable. So right now I am using the original RAM, I want to get extra RAM but not sure if it was a sporadic problem or it will happen with all the third party memories. Going to the official tecnical service will cost me more than 130€ while buying a third party RAM is around 40€. Is it really Apple pushing us to get original parts or I am just unlucky? Did someone else experienced something similar?Well, the upgraded RAM worked properly for 5 months straight. I don´t think it is a problem of dirt on the contacts or improper seating. Having the RAM not working properly the same day I want to update the OS, without touching it would be too much of a coincidence I think.
I am going to try the third party RAM again to be sure, trying to clean the contacts just in case, I will post the outcome later. -

I had OS 10.5.8 and I did upgrade it to snow Leopard, later after a year or so my mac has crushed where I forced to reinstall the original OS 10.5.8. now How can I upgrade to mountain Lion or at least to retreive my Snow Leopard?You need to use the Snow Leopard DVD to upgrade your computer. If you can't find that, phone the online Apple Store and order a new one.

I have just downloaded Mountain Lion but my iPhoto app cannot be launched as it says the original app cant be found. It takes me to where is says its located but its not there. What to do?

To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List. -
How long should an upgrade to Mountain Lion take? Our original download was interrupted by power outage, it seems to be taking forever.

Wireless recovery would start out with over 25 hours estimated and kept on failing. It turns out to be a two step process of downloading a few Mbytes then a 4Gbyte .dmg file, but I couldn't even download the Mbyte file. I bought the thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet adapter, plugged it in, restarted recovery and download of a little more than 4Gbytes took less than an hour. My limiting factor was probably comcast home internet rate of 12Mbps. The wi-fi wireless connection should be able to do over 100Mbps, so wireless shouldn't be much slower than wired, except wi-fi wireless is broken. Now that ML is installed and updated, wi-fi seems fine now, as I am using it right now, but I haven't tried downloading a big file yet.
Don't use wi-fi wireless for Mountain Lion recovery. -

You never have to pay to reinstall a Mac's original OS. If that was Snow Leopard or earlier though, you need its original discs.
If the Mac was built after Lion was released, about August 2011, boot OS X Recovery - using two fingers hold the ⌘ and R keys while starting your Mac. When the Mac OS X Utilities screen appears, select "Reinstall Mac OS X". -

Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down) and try the following in order as needed:
1 - select Disk Utility and repair both the disk and disk permissions. Reboot normally.
2 - reinstall the Mavericks system.

I have an original m box which works with snow leopard. Has anyone got experience using it with mountain lion?
I've been able to make it work on 10.8.2 as a standalone audio interface (ITunes, etc) using the workaround explained at the following link involving Soundflower and PureData. http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?p=1894515 You need of course the DigiCore Audio Manager (last version which supported the original MBox is 7.4.2).

How do I reinstall Mountain Lion in English on a system that was originally in Chinese?
I'm trying to help a friend who was given a used 13" MacBook Air (A1369) by the Chinese exchange student staying with him. It needed a screen repair, which was done, and we were able to change the display menus to English which is fine for general use. BUT... The previous owner had all kinds of Chinese games and programs as well as a partitioned HD. The plan was to just erase and reinstall Mountain Lion (which it came with, we THINK) and he'd have a fresh start.
Using the Recovery system would be great, except that since the comp was from China, and the ID associated with it is in Chinese, all of the instructions, menus and EVERYTHING are in Chinese. We can get online fine, and tried booting from a USB drive but everything is still in Chinese. We got as far as making a bootable USB and it looked like everything was OK, and started the erase/restore process but it got stuck in Chinese instructions and menus!!!
Is there a way to buy new copy of Mountain Lion with a new Apple ID that will be in English and then install it on a computer that was already running Mountain Lion? It seems I should be able to DL the OS to a USB drive and then just boot and install from that. But I'd have to DL on another Mac with its own ID running Lion. (Or use a Linux PC which seems like an even worse option.)
