Mountain lion preview finder screwed up
Hi,
just upgraded to Mountain Lion;
most things are OK, but when I open
up a "file open" dialogue on certain items
like Preview, the normal "recently accessed folders"
drop-down at the top is missing.
instead it has an inane my mac / icloud icon
and a confusing dropdown with "date created,
date modified, date opened, blah blah."
useless.
If I sort by "date" I just simply want to sort by date,
not all these stupid choices.
anyone know where that handly little
RECENT FOLDERS dropdown went?
also, a shame that the universal "save as"
function in Preview is now a lame "export" function
and any changes you make are made in the original
without your permission.
blah!
other than those grumps, ML is a great OS.
thanks for any hints.
If you mean this:
uncheck the box marked Documents & Data in the iCloud preference pane.

Revert Mountain Lion preview to Lion version (notes view)
I take a lot of notes on PDF presentations for school, and with the recent upgrade to Mountain Lion, Preview changed its UI. In lion I would take notes and it would display them with a line connected to the point on the PDF where I created it. Now in Mountain Lion, there is a new "Highlights & Notes view". The problem I have with the new view is that there is no way to easily see the notes for each slide. So I have to scroll through the PDFs then I have to separtely scroll throught the notes on the side to find the note for the corresponding slide. - This would not be a big deal, but sometimes I have presentations with over 100 slides with multiple notes on each slide, making it very cumbersome.
So.. Is there anyway to get the Lion preview back, or is there a way to simplify the notes view?
Thanks for any input
MikeIf you mean this:

after upgrading to mountain lion, i find that my mail app does not have a "VIP" Tab. Was wondering if anyone else has this issue and what it is about?
First, select sender(s) as VIPs. Then the VIP category will appear.
To select a sender as a VIP, open an email from that sender, then hover over their name and a star icon will appear to the left. Click the star, and that sender will be set as a VIP (and the category will appear in the pane on the left). -
After upgrading to mountain lion preview crashed
After a upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion the preview app crash all the time. After the start of the app they ask for admin account to repair a library.
But with the admin account the library repair is not working and preview crash again.
I upgrade also my MacBook Pro and there is the same issue.
I did already the following steps:
- reboot and install the latest update package from Apple
- permission repair with the disk utility
But nothing helps at the moment.
Here attached the error log.

This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
{ sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
▹ Restart
from the menu bar. -
Afte installing mountain lion, preview doesn't work anymore
I intalled mountain lion (actually, it was done at the apple store) and after that, I no longer can use Preview. I'm tryng to scan a doc from my working printer to my mac.
Image Capture is one of the applications that comes with the OS and there doesn't appear to be a separate download for it. You would have to reinstall the OS to get in back if it isn't there.
Depending on the printer you have, you may have an option to scan from System Preferences/Print & Scan.
try deleting the .plist - com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
You need to look in your user Library/Preferences for the .plist. Either hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command and select your user Library in your home folder or use the Finder “Go To Folder” command and enter ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist(s) from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist(s) to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
Show User Library
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.4. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible. -

-Reece,
We only have 1 single domain, 1 domain forest, no subdomains, only alias. I had replied to the other post as well. But I am happy to paste it here in case anyone want to read it.
So, after a few months of testing, capture and sending logs back and forth to Apple Engineers, we found out there is a setting in AD, under User Account that prevent us to log into AD from Mountain Lion. If you would go to your AD server, open up a user account properties, then go to Account tab, the "Do not require Kerberos preauthentication" option is checked. As soon as I uncheck that option, immediately I was able to log into AD on the Mac client. Apple engineers copied all my AD settings and setup a test environment on their end and match exact mine AD environment. They was able to reproduce this issue.
The bad part about this is... our environment required the "Do not require Kerberos preauthentication" is checked in AD, in order for our users to login into some of our Unix and Linux services. Which mean that it is impossible for us to remove that check mark because most, if not all of them some way or another require to login into applications that run on Unix and Linux. Apple is working to see if they can come up with a fix. Apparently, no one has report this issue except us. I believe most of you out there don't have that check mark checked in your environment... Anyone out there have any suggestion to by pass or have a work around for this? -
Help please! I have been using Mountain Lion for a few weeks but Finder, System Prefferences and the App Store won't load and/or keep crashing even after reinstalling the OS. How do to fix it?

You should see a complete set of IP address but if the router didn't issue you an IP address properly, you will see your touch IP address start with 169.x. If this is the case, you are connected to the internal network but not to the web.
First thing to do (while you are on that screen) is tap "Forget Network". Then turn WiFi off. Turn it back on and, if needed, tap Other and re-enter your network information. If you continue to have problems, check with your IT department on Monday.
In the meantime, your laptop and iTunes can be used to purchase apps and music. Syncing them with your touch is a great way to get them installed while you are waiting for the answer on your WiFi problem. -
Mountain Lion Upgrade - Finder crashes, Menu Bar disappears ****
Hi,
I have a mid 2009 MBP running Lion perfectly well, and I mean perfect. No crashes, nada. Upgraded from Snow Leopard.
I have tried twice before to upgrade to ML but both times had to revert to Lion.
Key problem:
"Finder quit unexpectedly" then menu bar disappers and I can't use keyboard anymore (so no terminal killall etc) so have to hard reboot
And Yes, I also tried all the regular suggestions to these issues (seem to be common) such as delete preferences, delete DS_Store, permissions resets etc with no result
So I was perfectly happy developing for iOS on Lion
Then comes iOS7 and XCode 5 will only run on ML so now I'm forced to try upgrading Lion to ML again.
1. 1st time I did it without changing anything. Errors Key problem: "Finder quit unexpectedly" then menu bar disappers and I can't use keyboard anymore (so no terminal killall etc) so have to hard reboot
-> revert to Lion
2. Uninstalled all menu bar extensions, and deleted all login items. Result -> errors
Key problem: "Finder quit unexpectedly" then menu bar disappers and I can't use keyboard anymore (so no terminal killall etc) so have to hard reboot
So I've tried the testing Linc Davis posted here https://discussions.apple.com/message/17642350#17642350 with following results;
Tried Alternate Account:
I set up new account and for a while it worked. I was able to deploy to iPad to running iOS7. Yay. I thought it was ok.
Then I installed java in order to run SmartGit and also Carbon Copy Cloner and bang...same errors start appearing.
Uninstalled them, but no joy, started acting up.
Tried SAFE Mode:
It works! Perfectly. But I can't run in safe mode all the time, as I need some of the features it disables (audio, network as I develop cross platform with Win7)
So I tried Linc's 3rd test with is for kernel extensions etc, with results posted below.
I would really appreciate any guidance as to how I can get this working. It is extremely frustrating and time wasting, and I have no faith in OSX ML as a stable platform for development. I don't want to buy another machine, not just the expense, but also from trawling the threads people with current and new machines are also reporting similar problems to me with no resolution that I can see. Whatver ever happened to "Graceful Degradation" not "System crashes with no help whatsover"!!
Anyways, frustrated rant over, here's my results. I'm going to try again, but any help on optimising my Lion install before I do would be VERY welcome!
ty in advan
(Note: These results are from my newly reverted Lion clone, and I have not removed any menu bar apps or login items as yet. These have been run on my prefectly working Lion install)
Step 1
Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower (1.6.6)
tc.tctechnologies.driver.TCNear (4.1.3
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
Step 2
Repeat with this line:
sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(x|postfix|ntp|cups)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.

OSX Mountain Lion Preview Hijacks Adobe PDF and Adobe Photoshop
My pdf files and all my images that I have designated to Adobe Reader and Photoshop in the "Get Info" window of these files... continually Default to Preview after a few days. This must stop... I never had this issue in Snow Leopard or Lion! Yes... I do hit the "Change All" button each time. Apple and Adobe seem to be at WAR over Preview, and we are payng the price! I POSTED THIS 2 MONTHS AGO AND MTN LION CONTINUES TO DO THIS EVEN AFTER A "SOLUTION" WAS GIVEN:
For Adobe Reader, try deleting the application, downloading it and reinstalling. I just did this and the first time I opened it, I was asked if I wanted to make it the default.
http://get.adobe.com/reader/
I am conviced that there really isn't any solution to this problem and that it is clearly something that is going on between Apple and Adobe!...and I've never heard of that issue before. You should be thinking "how do I troubleshoot and fix this on My Computer?"
Try generic troubleshooting - repair the hard drive:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1417
and also repair permissions. -
Default images zoom in Mountain Lion Preview - how to change
Hi,
I need to preview alot of images in my work. In previous system I would use Preview with zoom images to 100%. Now this option is gone in preferences. Since the images I preview are ewbsites designs, any other zoom then 100% is useless to me.
I know that I can open an image, push Cmd+0, click on the green + dot, and then scroll up (because after zooming to 100% the image is centered on the screen). But I open images about 100 times a day - so to me that situation is Usability disaster.
So my question is: is there a way I can set Preview default image viewing settings to:
- pixel to pixel zoom (100%)
- aligned to top
- opened in window of maximum size on the screen
I will go to church, kneel and pray for you, stranger sage...
CheersDear wjosten,
1) I have the same problem as Dergler: I can not set the availability status in Messages (ML, v7.0). The settings and also support documents tell that one should be able to set the status in the Menue bar, without mentioning that an active iCloud account in not sufficient.
2) Also, the Access to "Edit status menue" (and default status messages) is only possible when the activity report tool is displayed in the lower-left corner of the Messages window. With ONLY an iCloud account active this tool is not displayed.
You correctly tell that the activity report tool and also access to availability settings is possible when the Bonjour account is set to "Enable Bonjour instant messaging".
HOWEVER:
I do not want to become visible in my university network, I only want to use Messages (and iMessages on iOS) to communicate with other people that have iPads or iPhones. Are the availability settings not used over iCloud? Why then the setting "Use the same setting for all accounts"?
Is this intended, or is it a bug?? -

OS Mountain Lion and Finder Error -600
In the past week my system seems to have become slow. I get many "beach balls" especially when using MS Outlook 2011 and I have not installed any new software in over 90 days, except Software Updates via the App Store.
This new issue I believe is Finder related. If I try to open my "Documents" folder from the Dock, I get the error "The application "Finder" can't be opened. -600". This also prevents me from opening DropBox from my toolbar. However, if I click on the actual folders in my Home folder, they open just fine.
I have tried the usual: fixed permissions, restarted, used Onyx without help. Next I downloaded the 10.8.2 Combo Updater and ran it. This seemed to fix everything. However, 2 days later, the same issues are back.
I see from old forum posts that this is a "process issue" usually related to expired software, but this error is for the Finder.
Thoughts? Ideas?
Thank you in advance. Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -
Mountain lion finder rearranges my icon files
I've discovered a bug:
Mountain Lion's Finder rearranges my icon files by alphabet when I paste more than one document into a directory. It happened twice. Sometimes I prefer visual arrangement in directories.
SECOND PROBLEM:
I also don't like the permanent default Finder window size - I want OS X to remember my last Finder window size like it used to. I have a big Apple monitor, I like using it.
Is there any way to fix these issues?
Thanks!Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

How can I use "Preview 5.0" in mountain lion?
Heya,
The scaled-back features for making notation in Mountain Lion Preview is getting me down. I was using Preview to make detailed, indexed, correlated notes on research materials, but the cosmetic changes to highlight and note tools just can't meet my needs; there are too few options. I've lifted the old version of Preview (5.0.3) from an earlier version of the OS, hoping to uise that for my notating, but it cannot be opened:
Note: I renamed it to prevent confusion. Having the original, expanded features back would really help with my work. Anyone know a way to get the old Preview to open?
Cheers!spbitticks wrote:
There must be a reason - anyone know what in the OS is blocking this, and why Apple would go to these extremes?
Often, it is because the system level files the app relies on to function have changed enough in the new OS that they won't work with the old version of the app.
You can get an idea of what's involved by launching the current version of Preview, then launching Activity Monitor & double-clicking on the Preview process in Activity Monitor's list of processes. In the window that pops up, select "Open Files & Ports." You will see that it requires various System level files like frameworks, extensions, & data files. If any of these files work differently in the new OS version (& many of them usually do), then the old version of the app is likely to be incompatible with them. -
Mountain Lion and Docking on a MBP
At home I have a multiple USB port adaptor throught which I connnect mutiple peripherals to my MBP. In partilcular this is used to connect boththe hard drive I use for Time Machine and my HP pronter scanner. Since upgrading to Mountain Lion I find that when bringing the MBP home from work, plugin in the USB adaptor and opening up the lid the system wakes up form sleep mde fine but does not see the peripherlas connected through the USB adaptor. Unplugging it and plugging it back in has no effect. If I press restart, however, everything is recognised and works fine after the re-boot. I have been used to pressing the soft eject button on the time machine capsule in Finder and then closing the lid to put the MBP into sleep mode before taking it to work and then reversing the process in the evening. Indeed, on OS X Lion I have often run the machine for months without rebooting. A major time savong benefit by comparison with a windows machine! Is there any way to force Mountain Lion to "see" the peripherals just plugged in without re-bootong the system?
I installed 10.8.1 three times.
I completly erased my SSD twice.
I repaired it with Disk Utlity, repaired permissions, repaired it with Disk Warrior, Reset the P-Ram, etc...
A lot of people (at least in Italy) are having similar issues.
It is the very first time that a new OS disappoints me that much.
Thanks
