Mountain Lion root password

I can't get the Mountain Lion root password set using the Users & Groups system preferences panel.  When I go to Terminal and type "su -", the new password is not accepted.  Could it be a bad root security certificate?

If the account you are using, when starting Terminal, is an 'admin' account as specified by System Preferences -> Users & Groups (or it might be called Accounts) -> account_name (Admin), then the 'sudo' password is the password for the account you are currently using.
If you are using a standard account, then sudo is not going to work.  However, if using a standard account, then you could:
su admin_account
password: admin_account_password
# you can use:
sudo command_to_be_exected_by_root
password: admin_account_password

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico my first language is Spanish. I do not speak English, however I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
Apple is not here. Apple does not answer questions here. You will need to contact Apple directly for a solution.

  • Mountain lion redemption password

how long should i wait for the password for mountain lion free upgrade redemption?
I have been waiting several hours since I received the locked pdf with the app download code!

I'm also waiting now on day 2 for the App Store code.  It would have been nice if Apple had carved out a small piece of their data center to look-up the users who purchased their new Macs withing the time period and automatically activated the free download for them.  This is not rocket science, its the kind of service we have grown to expect from Apple.
C'mon Apple, you are better than this.  An intern progreammer could have done this in less than an hour.

My mac do not request a pass word on startup. How do I re-enter my startup password.

Open System Preferences>Users & Groups fourth line down. At the bottom of the left side select Login Options, you may need to unlock the panel to make changes. At the top in Automatic Login set it to "Off", meaning it will ask for your password to log in.

    I need some H E L P !

Same problem with my MacBookPro and Mountain Lion. Passwords on the Apple site (like this support site) work fine. My brokerage account does not and they tell me it's not them, but an Apple issue. Also, serial numbers on some of my smaller aps have disappeared; at least one vendor told me it was a common Mountain Lion experience.
I like Mountain Lion but I liked autofill and solid app validation even better. This is a turd in the punchbowl. Hard to believe that a company bent on zero flaws would let this slip through.Could it be due to the sandboxing or other security measure? Is Apple becoming like the US government -- so bent on "security" that it can't fulfill its own mission?

  • How do  you reset the root password in Mountain Lion?

After install of Mountain Lion on my old iMac, I could not enter administrator, no password would work, Apple support helped me go through terminal to reset root password and root as administrator . I then was able to reset myself as administrator with a new pasword. I used that paassword a few times now it wont accept it again. I dont remember all the steps to reset the root password and recover from this situation.. Can anyone help?  Is this a bug in Mountain Lion?

I'm having similar issues but other concerns
    1. Can't go into recovery mode since its protected by firmware password, which I don't have. All option keys sequences go into the same firmware padlock, which I don't have the apparent pin.
    2. In terminal mode it didn't happen to recognize that unix command.  Also since I'm just on guest would that reset for the admin or possibly the guest acct?
    3. I've done the DIMM pulls and even though older model, 2011, it didn't appear to a reset for the firmware password.
    Any other options??

  • Mail doesn't recognize password after upgrading to Mountain Lion

    After updgrading to Mountain Lion:
The gmail account in Mail began to ask for its password. it is preseent [in dots]; when i click to continue, dialog box indicates it doesn't recognize it.
i had time to to go over details in a gmail help page with details (port numbers and other things).
    I decided to start over.
I deleted the account in Mail, system preferences, Accounts, began anew. Later I deleted inactive Gmail from  menu, Mail. Contacts & Calendars.
Reading some interventions in Communities mentioned the Key Chain. I had changed the Gmail password while using an older Mac Book. In June i purshased a MacBook Air and had Apple migrate my files from the old to the new mac. Mail had not password problems until I updated to Mountain Lion, which I thoroughly enjoy.
    I'm at my wits end.
Throughout all this, Mail on my ipodtouch o.k.
    I appreciate help.

Is it sleeping or shutting down?
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there.

I bought a 13 inch macbook pro9.2 at Cash America with windows 7 Ultimate with boot camp program.
The Mac op sytem has Mountain Lion installed but the previous ower has his name and password attached to it and can only use as guest.
My question is how do I get around this to be administrator to reload software so i can use mountain Lion, and not loose the windows op .

If you reformat the partition that contain Mountain Lion and reinstall Mountain Lion, it should not effect the Windows pratition.
Have said that I suggest you backup everything you might want to save just in case.

    Eli,
You can reset a Password (lost/forgotten) set on your Mac using 'Reset Password Utility' available with OS X Utilities tool. With OS X Mountain Lion, OS X Utilities tool can be generally found on a local hidden Recovery HD Partition if your Mac has one.
To check If your Mac has got a local hidden Recovery HD Partition, start your Mac holding COMMAND + R buttons. If you hold the keys pressed enough and there is a local Recovery HD Partition on your Mac, you will be presented with OS X Utilities window.
Click the 'Tool' menu item and choose 'Reset password'. Terminal window appears. Type 'resetpassword' into it and press 'Enter'. Reset Password window appears with User Account Names available on your Start-up Volume. Select the User Account Name and rest is simple to follow.
One of the advantages of this method is that it does not require any Authorization method such as administrative authentication to reset a password.
NOTE: If your Mac does not have a local hidden Recovery Partition on its system disk, you can create one using Disk Assistant application available from Apple. Search for the Disk Assistant in the support area.

My iMac goes to disc utilities on startup, repair disk doesn't cure it and I can't reinstall Mountain Lion because I don't remember my ID and password at the time I bought the software the system isn't accepting my current details and Apple isn't recognising the answers to my security questions.  They don't even seem to have my correc date of birth so I can't progress the reinstallation.  I'm currently abroad and have my iMac with me but with no way of contacting Apple that I can find, I'm at a loss and very reluctant to pay £35 to try and get my ID and pasword sorted out given that their system recognises my current details.  can anyone help please?

when they gifted me the mountain Lion software several years ago.
Mountain Lion was introduced in July 2012. Did the people who gifted you possibly use their Apple ID for the purchase of your OS? If you used your own Apple ID, you should have simply used the one you use for all things app store. The problem with any purchase at the app store is: whatever Apple ID was used to purchase, it willl stay tied to that Apple ID forever. And, purchases from the app store are not transferable.
So, you can check with the person(s) who gifted you or spend $20 to buy it - or, if your hardware is compatible with the new OS Mavericks, you could download it and associate it with your Apple ID.
FWIW, according to the licensing agreement, the OS remains the property of Apple and you are only granted a license to run it.

I assumed this would help my problem with not being able to open apps like Preview or TextEdit since I installed Mountain Lion. Instead, first I'm prompted to enter a password, then once I do that, I get an error box telling me the Library needs repairing. So I click on Repair, and once again I'm prompted for a password, which I enter, then the same error box opens, and so it goes. Can anyone help me with this problem? I'd greatly appreciate it.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Step 1 should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary, and if everything is working as expected after step 1.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

My dad has dementia - does not remember his password. His hard drive has been erased. We need to reload Mountain Lion and can't figure out how to do it. Internet recovery asks for his Apple ID and password. He has no idea. I have an Apple ID but have never bought anything through the iTunes store so it won't accept my Apple ID. I don't know if his computer is under warranty. He does not remember if he has Applecare. I tried reinstalling Leopard -- the computer originally came with Leopard -- but the computer screen goes grey and a message comes up saying I need to restart. He wants to give this computer to me since it's useless to him. What do I do to get a system on it again?

You will need to reformat the hard drive to go back to Snow Leopard or Leopard.
Does he have a Snow Leopard Disk? He should, as there is no way to go from Leopard to Mountain Lion without it. If you can find the Snow Leopard Disk, I'd at least start with that.
You will need to use Disk Utility in the installer to format the hard drive and get rid of the recovery partition.
Boot from the installer disk by holding down the C key on restart. When it boots, Open Disk Utility (Utilities menu, at least in Snow Leopard).
Select the Hard drive and then click the Partition tab.
Select 1 Partition from the partition menu.
Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format.
Name the drive (Macintosh HD is the standard).
Click Apply to partition the drive.
When it is done, quit Disk Utility and install the OS.
