Mountain Lion Running VERY SLOW on Late 2009 iMac

Specs are all good. There's enough disc space, memory etc... Not too many start up items...
But STILL... My system is BUGGY and VERY SLOW!
I've done a clean install and to no avail... I am constantly getting the spinning wheel with every action I take.
For now, all I can do is be extremely patient and not keep pushing the system... I let it do its thing.
Something is not happy.

Thank you for the repy ETRESOFT!
Not sure why the screen shots aren't showing up? They even came up on iPad while viewing your post? Sorry about that.
Okay... After running your diagnostic program, (THANK YOU AGAIN)  here's what we find...
It looks like there's a S.M.A.R.T. failure. (SEE BELOW)
I'm not sure if I should completely wipe the hard drive, attempt utility disk repair and reinstall everything? Would it benefit?
Last week when I was prepared to install Mountain Lion for the first time, I called APPLE Support and they advised me to do the following for a fresh & clean install:
Completely erase the iMac hard drive.
Download and Install a fresh copy of Lion
Set up TEMP USER as default ADMIN
Upgrade to Mountain Lion
Add a 2nd user Chipo1973 with ADMIN Rights
Migrate backup copy of Chipo73 from MacBook Pro onto user Chipo1973 / iMac
Delete original TEMP USER
Not sure if this caused any additional issues?
Thoughts?

  • Mac Pro with OS mountain lion working very slow

I have a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.8.2. the mac is working very slow. It takes a lot of time to boot. Much longer than windows PC. Applications are also running very slow. How to speed up the mac and improve its performance? Plz help!!!

    We're a workstation/tower forum.
Having more RAM has little or diminishing affect unless you are runnning apps that need and can use it (graphics being one, such as CS5 and later).
Many laptop owners and desktop like SSD for shorter boot (Mac always boots fast, quicker than Windows, use both).
If it were me I would
Backup of coure, TimeMachine and maybe one other method or set is useful, then do a clean install and reload the OS and let it do all the updates.
Most of the time after a lot of digging around and questions and answers, it gets down to "Did you install xyz" and a list of 3rd party programs, drivers and apps that you added that aren't part of the core OS or from Apple. Whether Norton (notorious) or some "cleaner" program or even something you need but which may not be compatible with or needed with OS X and Mountain Lion.
You can also set aside 100GB and run Windows natively as well as a guest VM OS.
Along with monitoring RAM, disk activity, I've seen RAM DIMMs that were 'loose' or not fully seated - even though Lion OS ran well the second that they tried to install Windows 7 on their MacBook Pro it had errors and could not complete. They had upgraded the RAM on their own. Just odd that OS X was that immune and insensitive.
But this is best off where others with the very same topic can be found in Mountain Lion and MacBook Pro forums. (we get way too many MBP in Mac Tower Pro) MacBook Pro

  • Can I run 2 monitors off late 2009 iMac 27

My late 2009 iMac 27 monitor just died. But the computer works fine.
I am addicted to using two monitors. The back of the iMac has a Thunderbolt port and a Firewire port.
The Thunderbolt port is now running an external monitor.
    1. Is there a way that the Firewire port could be used to run another external monitor?
    2. Could a USB to VGA cable support a second monitor?
    3. Is there any way to run a second monitor?
    Thanks.

Yup, that's really all you need to do - it's that simple. Once the monitor is connected and showing your extended desktop, go to System Preferences - Dsplays - Arrangement, and you'll see two blue rectangles representing the monitors. Drag them into the configuration you'd like (eg, aligned left/right) and you can drag the white menu bar across into the other rectangle to make the new monitor your primary (where you see dock and menus) if you'd prefer.

  • Lion runs very slow on a fast MacBook Pro, why?

I have Mid 2010 MacBook Pro, I used to have Snow Leopard and it was VERY fast. I bought Lion about 3 months after its release date. I like it but, all the aplications run REALLY slow! On Snow Leopard, my computer would boot up within 30 seconds but after I got Lion it at least takes a minute to boot up. I also keep seeing the beachball every now and then, and when I look at my ram usage, it's normal. Safari takes for ever to launch, but after its on I have no problem at all. Another wierd thing is that when I am on youtube, Safari itself uses 1.5gb of ram. I don't know if this has anything to do with Lion but when I was a Snow Leopard user my battery health would stay between 95% and 100% but since I have Lion, it "jumps' around. I goes to any random number between 80 and 100. An hour ago it 90% and right now its 82%, tomorrow it will be something like 85%. I've not changed the way I charge and use my battery. Does Lion use more battery?

Oh, and I forgot to add the specs. I have 4gb of Memory/Ram. The processor is a 2.66 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo. It's a 13" MacBook Pro.

  • IMac, Mountain Lion, iPhoto very slow

    Hi forum!
I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion v10.8.2 and I am using an intel dual core processor desktop iMac. 63.27 GB of space available. My last operating system upgade for this device. I have four iPhoto libraries on my HD. I have had no issues until yesterday. I decided to clean up my iPhoto Libraries (i.e. delete the garbage and reorganize the layout of where photos are found, I don't usual tag each photo, I just rely on iPhoto to keep things sorted by date created. I had iPhoto crash everytime that I tried to move things from one event to another or merge events, maybe this is just something that can't be done in this new version. I have done it in the past. I also realized that some of the older libraries are not so compatible with iPhoto v 9.4.1 which sounds normal and decided to not bother fixing these but just to back them up and deal with the application compatibilites issues later.
As I was exploring my library and trying different things, I had multiple crashes. I also tried to empty my trash to make more room on my HD. I only had about 2000 items in the trash and it was so slow emptying. It took over a half hour. Then I noticed that applications were also taking way too long to open with a few crashs. I guess I need to do some system clean up besides iPhoto libraries.
Any not too technical suggestions or not too complicated links to help me resolve my slow system. I am mostly interested in Apple solutions and not third party applications. I did check out iPhoto manager which lead me to Xcode and felt a little overwhelmed. Of course I found these solutions in threads that I read in the forum. I used the apple iPhoto Library FirstAid but I wasted a lot of time and still have some errors in the library. I have some empty events with sometimes no key picture thumbprint.

  • Imac 27" 2012 Mountain Lion running very hot

Please help. My 27" IMac running very hot, especially top left corner. Is there a fix.
    Tony R

A couple of things.  First, do you know what the internal temperature are? if not, look into getting the widget istat from slayer.  It will show you something like this:
You can monitor the fan speeds and temps.
The iMac should speed up the fans in relation to the temperatures against a profile determined by Apple.  If for some reason, your fan speeds are low and the temp is sitll high, you may need to reset your SMC.  That is the shutdown, unplug, wait, plug it back in, restart maintenance proceedure.
If everything is working properly and you still don't like the temperatures, you can download SMCfancontrol.  This applications allows you to speed up your fans manually or set higher minimums.
Lastly, iMacs to get hot and are designed for it.  Apple wants to keep the fans speeds down so the system is quiet.  If you play lots of games, or doing a lot of GPU/CPU intensive work, it is normal for the chips to hit 70C at the case and the fans to be clearly audible.  If you were expecting to work the machine hard but the aluminum backside to be just warm, that won't happen.

  • Lion runs very slow on macbook pro 4.1

About 3 months ago I upgraded from 10.6.8 to 10.7.4 and at first all was fine, loving the new funtionality. But slowly the puter began slowing down. Now Apple appls take forever to open...iTunes can take 2 minutes and so can Text Edit or Preview.  Space bar previews in finder almost never actually complete, usually just a spinning gear.
The 10.7.5 update seemed to help, but then the massive slow down began again. And now it seems like Time Machine is always running, or preparing or getting over a backup, seems like forever.
I am considering going back to 10.6.8 but I do like the new functionality.
500gb HD, 182gb available; 4gb RAM; Regularly blast PRam, restart in safe mode, run permissions repair, then power cycle to start again.
Any suggestions before I downgrade???? All input appreciated!
    Thanks in advance.

Things You Can Do To Keep Your Computer From Slowing Down
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • In Design CS3 - runs very slow on new Intel iMac

To open an existing In Design doc, or a a new doc takes forever. Has Adobe got problems with Intel Macs? Or is there some simple fix?

    Hi Douglas,
Adobe CS3 product line are Universal Binary apps and should usually run a lot better/faster on Intel-macs as the CS2 ones.
But also said that the CS3 apps are hungry for RAM, so how much RAM do you have ?

  • Installing Windows 7 on a late 2009 iMac running Mavericks

I'm running a perfectly good late-2009 iMac running Mavericks and had a bootcamp partition that worked until I needed to replace my hard drive.
Now I want to install Windows 7 (via bootcamp) for gaming.  Bootcamp 5 won't download the software or allow a USB/ISO Windows 7 load due to my model/ROM version, which is:
    Model Name:               iMac
    Model Identifier:          iMac10,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed:          3.33 GHz
    Number of Processors:          1
    Total Number of Cores:         2
    L2 Cache:                      6 MB
    Memory:                       8 GB
    Bus Speed:                    1.33 GHz
    Boot ROM Version:        IM101.00CC.B00
I've read quite a few threads about the apple software download server issues, creating an ISO, adjusting the BootCamp package, using virtualbox, etc. to bypass this.  But can't find anything addressing my specific situation where I'm running mavericks AND have an older ROM version that won't allow USB install for some stupid reason.
I've made an ISO boot disk (and USB), tried adjusting my BootCamp package strings, and have virtualbox, winclone, Daemon tools, etc. but can't get to the point where I can upload the bootcamp software and Win7.  Has anyone solved this problem?

Has anyone noticed issues running Mavericks with a late 2009 iMac?  I see slow performance occasionally, even though I'm not really doing much (Safari, mail, maybe an Excel spreadsheet).  My iMac has 4G memory, 3GHz dual core CPU; memory pressure is amber and memory used is 3.98G, VM 12.1G, swap used 1.81G.  I'm thinking we've just hit the memory ceiling and it's time to cough up the bucks to bring it to 16G, but I wanted to reach out to the community first, get a feel for how others are finding Mavericks works on their older equipment, before I put a couple hundred bucks into a 4 year old computer.

What you do in the interim is try a Safe Mode boot.
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper 2.0.1
        2. AppDelete 3.2.6
        3. Automaton 1.50
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner 2.1.0
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash 1.8.2
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller 1.15.1
      10. Spring Cleaning 11.0.1

  • My MacBook (late 2009 Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) often runs VERY slow...beach ball of death frequently.  My page ins (5.29GB), page outs (5.64BG), and swap files (10GB) seem extremely high in comparison to most other discussions in here.  HELP!!??

My MacBook (late 2009 Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) often runs VERY slow...beach ball of death frequently.  My page ins (3.29GB), page outs (5.64BG), and swap files (10GB) seem extremely high in comparison to most other discussions in here.   I don't know how to copy the pie chart so it shows on here but here's what it says right now:
    Free - 176 MB
    Wired - 592MB
    Active - 843MB
    Inactive - 432MB
    Used - 1.82 GB
    VM size - 198GB
The page ins and page outs have 0 bytes/sec in the parenthesis even though the numbers are so high.
Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated!!!

You difinately need more ram. 2gb is the bare minimum to run just the Lion OS, anything extra will slow your Mac to a crawl. Upgrade to 8gb from either Crucial http://www.crucial.com/ or OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/
And you will be a happy camper!

    Thanks for all the replies.
I've now installed the ad blocker, thrown away the unwanted files, and thrown away a copy of Firefox that Adware said had a problematic extension.
Things are better, but still slow.
Activity Monitor shows that with just Mail, Chrome and Excel running, 2.9GB of my 4GB RAM is used. Opening InDesign (always slow) increase that to 3.2GB. But the graph stays green.
Console shows several potential problems but I don't know if any are significant. In any case I will call my Mac store tomorrow to ask their advice about RAM.
