Mountain Lion Server cannot create NetBoot images for earlier systems

I'm trying to create a NetBoot image for OS X Lion on my Mountain Lion Server using System Image Utility, but SIU shows the 10.8 installer as the only available disk for creating an image.
The same 10.7 boot disk is shown as source correctly in Lion Serevr SIU.
Does SIU limits the creation of NetBoot image only for the same OS X version or am I missing something?
Ideas?
Thank you!

Yes. SIU for Mountain Lion only makes images of Mountain Lion.
To make images for Lion, you'll need to download the Server Essentials package for 10.7.5 and install it onto a Lion system.

    Increase parameter streams_pool.

  • Mountain Lion Server cannot Sleep

first I installed Mountain Lion , MY system is able to sleep fine .
than I installed ML server , Now system fails to sleep
It turns off the screen, but keeps running.

I had this problem on a clean install.
The solution was incredibly simple for me, but only  after I saw Ross.M's note about opening the Users & Groups settings panel (in the OS System Prefs, not in server) and rebinding to OD server under Login Options.
That was not the solution for me, but under Login Options I discovered a previously unnoticed pref for "Allow network users to login at login window."  I had this option set (apparently by default) to "Only these network users:"  but with an empty list.  Adding my users to the list made it work perfectly.
    Talk about KISS

  • Firewall gui for Mountain Lion Server

Is there an easy firewall for Mountain Lion server? Im amazed Apple took this feature away. For what reason? I dont know command line very well and shouldnt have to learn it seeing as how Macs are supposed to be "user friendly". Doing a port scan I see about 20 ports open that I want to close but just dont know how as they're not application specifc (like pop3...). Any suggestions would be helpful.
    thanks.

I totally agree with you, the whole point of OS X was to be easy to use i.e. GUI based, if we wanted a pure CLI system we would get Linux
There are actually two different Firewalls on Mountain Lion Server, the 'standard' one you see in System Preferences which is an Application level firewall (ALF), and has extremely limited options but does have a GUI, and the CLI only one which is pfctl (Packet Filtering).
Note: ipfw is depreciated in Mountain Lion.
There is a third-party tool for configuring pfctl called IceFloor. Be careful though, I managed to screw up a system with it, as always make sure you have a backup before making changes.

  • Mountain lion server reinstall

    Hi there
Our college recently purchased a mac mini server which had Mountain Lion Server pre-installed to mange the iMacs we have in our classrooms. I setup the server as our requirements but noticed that it wasn't running a RAID setup. I followed instructions that I found online and restarted the mac mini server in Internet Recovery mode, opened Disk Utility and created a RAID set, then reinstalled OSX on that RAID set. When the installer had completed, I noticed that it had installed Mountain Lion and not Mountain Lion Server.
I went onto the App Store and looked in purchases for the Server App but it is not available for Mountain Lion.
OSX Server is available but I have to upgrade to 10.9 and install OSX Server at a cost of £13.99. This is not an option that we wish to pursue at this time
I have contacted Apple and the option they gave me was to upgrade to 10.9 and purchase OSX Server.
Is there any possibility of downloading Mountain Lion Server?
    Regards
    Noel

If you purchased the system with Mountain Lion and Server.app and related, then call up Apple Support and ask that the server be added to your Mac App Store purchase profile.  (I have various earlier Server.app bundles available for installation because those versions of Server.app were registered with Apple.)
FWIW and should a similar case arise again in the future, another approach for the RAID migration would be to copy the current disk contents off of the disk, RAID the disks, and then copy the data back onto the disk.  If there was a Time Machine or other off-host backup, that would be a candidate to restore OS X and OS X Server here.  (If it's available, also look on that backup for a copy of Server.app.)   It's also possible to migrate to RAID "hot", but that's not something that Apple supports.

  • How to Create lion os x Image for netrestore in mountain lion server

i have a problem with the create a lion os x image for netrestore in mountain lion server, i have a macbook pro with all software that i like for the customize deployment but when i connect the macbook pro to macmini server in target mode, but  the system image utility don't added to sources for create a netrestore image, this only pass with lion os x because with mountain lion os x works correctly, please help me

System Image Utility only makes images of the system it ships with.
In order to make Lion images, you'll need to install the Server Admin Tools for Lion onto a Lion system. You will then find the appropriate System Image Utility in /Applications/Server/.

  • Snow Leopard client for NetRestore image not being recognized in Mountain Lion Server

I target firewired a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard and ran System Imaging Utility and the machine does not show up as an option. Does Mountain Lion Server support Snow Leopard NetRestore images or am I doing something wrong?

I'm actually trying to figure that out as well. We have 10.5, 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8 Images we wanted to put together for our netrestore images on our server, but can only do 10.8 images currently.
We also have the AppleCare Helpdesk diagnostic kit which includes hardware tests, we were only able to get the newer mid-2012 and late-2012 Diagnostic utilities to netboot but none of the older ones.
So do we need a server running the older OS to get these or is there a better alternative? i mean really shouldnt be a problem considering theyre running inside of an image and dont rely heavily on the server resources other than to say "Yep, goto this file/directory".
I'd like to know more as well....

  • No Entry Sign when trying to netboot new MacMini to Mountain Lion Server

My company just purchased a new MacMini i5 2.5 GHz and I am trying to netboot it to my Mountain Lion Server 10.8.2 but I am getting the No Entry sign when it tries to boot to the server.  I tested my other Mac computers that are in my environment and they are able to netboot to the server fine.  It just seems to be an issue with this latest Mac Mini.
As part of my troubleshooting, I created a new netrestore image from the new Mac Mini using System Image Utility on the Mountain Lion Server.  The server successfully created it and I set it as the new default image in the NetBoot server.  After taking these steps, I am still getting a No Entry sign.
I checked the log on the server to see what is happening when it tries to boot and this is what is displays:

    I'm seeing the same behavior with a new Late 2012 Macmini6,2 (2.3GHz quadcore i7).
I have a lab with several variants of minis up through the last generation.  One of those minis is a NetBoot/DeployStudio server.  I have it hosting a 10.8.2 NetBoot image, which works for all of the other lab minis but this new one.
I have tried 3 different methods for NetBoot:
Holding the 'N' key at boot
Holding option and seeing my NetBoot disk in the selectable options
Booting into the restore partition and selecting my NetBook disk from the Startup Disk preference pane
All 3 options result in what is described above - the Ghostbusters (minus the ghost) no entry sign.  My particular mini then shuts itself down shortly thereafter.
My NetBoot server log looks similar to the above, where my BSD INFORM messages have sysid=Macmini6,2.
I have confirmed that - on the restore partition at least - the shipping OS on the new mini 6,2 is 10.8.1.  It's likely a custom edition for this new hardware.  It's possible that a component of a 10.8.3 update would fix it, but I'm unfortunately leaning toward this being an EFI firmware issue.  I've noted on another site that these minis seem to have issues with VMware's ESXi, where the suggested course of action will be an Apple firmware update: http://communities.vmware.com/thread/423099
As the lab is hoping to purchase 40 of these systems, NetBoot support is rather critical.

  • Out of office Relpy for apple Mail on Mountain Lion Server

We just recently switched our server from Lion to Mountain Lion and now we can not figure out how to create and launch an Out of Office Reply for Apple Mail on the new Mountain Lion Server.  I have searched the internet for an aswer and/or instructions on how to do this and haven't found any.
As anyone figured out how to create and launch an Out of Office Reply for Apple Mail on the new Mountain Lion Server?

  • Mountain lion server network accounts are not mounting network home directory, rather its creating a blank local directory

I have set up a scratch mountain lion server with open directory.  copied over old user account directories and added my users that match the directory ids.  Currently if a networked user logs into a networked computer, instead of mounting the network home directory, its creating a local home directory.  suggestions?

Additional info: it appears that certificates are not working either: setting up ical: "the certificate for this server was signed by an unknown certifying authority."...

  • Why, when MobileMe was shuttered, does Apple NOT support calendar subscriptions for iCal (Calendar)?  I upgraded to Mountain Lion and cannot migrate my Dutch, U.K., Islamic, or Catholic holiday subscriptions.

Why, when MobileMe was shuttered, does Apple NOT support calendar subscriptions for iCal (Calendar)?
I upgraded to Mountain Lion and cannot migrate my Dutch, U.K., Islamic, or Catholic holiday subscriptions.  I had a heck of a time getting my Detroit Tigers Baseball team schedules migrated (but Major League Baseball supported the subscriptions, so it occurred).  As I work internationally, having these calendar subscriptions on the new Calendar would be very useful.
If one goes to the Apple site, and seeks calendars [http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/calendars/index1.html], they are shunted to MobileMe [https://www.icloud.com/mobileme/not_found/], with the note "MobileMe is closed. Go to iCloud."  But, I do not see how to get subscriptions from iCloud.
    Thanks.

The problem is that many of these calendars were hosted on MobileMe. I actually tried about 20 at random, and only two worked! Not all of the failures were ex-MobileMe, some were on other servers but produced 'File Not Found'.
Strangely, this one worked despite its URL:
    http://ical.mac.com/ical/UK32Holidays.ics
Until the people who publish these calendars (it's not Apple, they are third-party) wake up and find alternative servers these calendars are not available.
There may be other sources which work - try Googling.

  • Lion Server DNS service not working for locally created zones. Caching working fine.

OS Lion Server DNS service not working for local zones. Was fine under Snow leopard server but Lion server upgrade has severely broken my DNS and web sites. Zones look fine under Server Admin but keep getting "query failed (SERVFAIL) for xxxx at /SourceCache/bind9/bind9-42/bind9/bin/named/query.c:3921" in the logs. BTW - Server Admin cant seem to see the log file either.
Surely someone actually tested that DNS still worked on Lion?

I upgraded from Snow Leopard Server to Lion Server on day 01.  I hit the same issue where, after the upgrade, my Lion Server stopped serving names for my private local domain.
I finally took a few minutes to figure out what was wrong.  After turning on debug logging and looking through the logs, I found my particular issue, now resolved.
The issue I had was, when the domain initially was setup when I installed Snow Leopard Server, for some reason it created a zone just for the server (in my case, something like zone "s-01.mydomain.priv"), and a separate zone for all the other machines (zone "mydomain.priv", containing all the private IPs for my local domain).  I never messed with it because it worked, but generally I would have put all of them in the same zone.
My zone "mydomain.priv" had a nameserver and mail exchanger entry for my server, s-01.mydomain.priv.  I could see this in the Server Admin app on the DNS bubble, Zones tab, mydomain.priv selected, and the General Info panel.  This was fine in Snow Leopard.  This was failing the zone load in the updated bind for Lion Server, though.  The issue was that the "mydomain.priv" zone was referencing the s-01.mydomain.priv server, which was not defined in the "mydomain.priv" zone but rather in the "s-01.mydomain.priv" zone.
    My fix:
    1. In Server Admin, add the server to the zone "mydomain.priv".  I put an A record (Add Machine) in the "mydomain.priv" zone for my server named s-01.mydomain.priv.
    2. shut down DNS on the OS X Lion Server (hit the Stop DNS button on Server Admin).
    3. edit /etc/named.conf by hand, removing the specialized zones that contianed just the server.  In this case, it would be the section titled 'zone "s-01.mydomain.priv"' and the section titled 'zone "3.10.1.10.in-addr.arpa"'.  Your in-addr.arpa zone name will change based on whatever your server IP address was.  My internal one happened to have s-01.mydomain.priv mapped to 10.1.10.3.
    4. Once the specialized zones for just the server were removed, I started the DNS up again.  Instead of serving four zones as it had in OS X Snow Leopard Server, it now servers two zones.  And, now, it is resolving my local machines for the mydomain.priv zone.
YMMV.  I did note that it wasn't totally necessary to do step 3, but I never really understood the need for the specialized domain, and keeping it around would have a copy of data that would just confuse things.
Hope that helps.  That's been the only hiccup I've noticed updating to OS X Lion Server thus far.

  • Additional email address for user in mountain lion server

I have a new installation of OS X Mountain Lion server (10.8.2) that I am wanting to deploy.  The problem that I am running into now is that there is no way that I have found to add a second email address.
I have multiple domains so, i need to have "[email protected]" and "[email protected]" for the same user.
Has anyone seen a way around this?

Wow - just after I answer back, I found a download for the Workgroup Manager at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1567.  I probably need more sleep.
Yes, it is just Server Admin that is no more, Workgroup Manager is still at the moment available.
For your information another less pleasant means would be to directly modify the Open Directory record using either the command line or the Directory Editor launched from Open Directory Utility which in turn is launched from the Login Options "Join..." button.

Good timing! Oh well, at least you shouldn't have to update again for a while. It will be nice kickstarting your Mac with the very latest System Update knowing any hiccups from 10.8.2 would have been ironed out if they were going to affect your workflow at all.
