Mountain Lion Server cannot Sleep

first I installed Mountain Lion , MY system is able to sleep fine .
than I installed ML server , Now system fails to sleep
It turns off the screen, but keeps running.

I had this problem on a clean install.
The solution was incredibly simple for me, but only  after I saw Ross.M's note about opening the Users & Groups settings panel (in the OS System Prefs, not in server) and rebinding to OD server under Login Options.
That was not the solution for me, but under Login Options I discovered a previously unnoticed pref for "Allow network users to login at login window."  I had this option set (apparently by default) to "Only these network users:"  but with an empty list.  Adding my users to the list made it work perfectly.
Talk about KISS

  • Mountain Lion Server cannot create NetBoot images for earlier systems

I'm trying to create a NetBoot image for OS X Lion on my Mountain Lion Server using System Image Utility, but SIU shows the 10.8 installer as the only available disk for creating an image.
The same 10.7 boot disk is shown as source correctly in Lion Serevr SIU.
Does SIU limits the creation of NetBoot image only for the same OS X version or am I missing something?
    Ideas?
    Thank you!

Yes. SIU for Mountain Lion only makes images of Mountain Lion.
To make images for Lion, you'll need to download the Server Essentials package for 10.7.5 and install it onto a Lion system.

  • I'm trying to use Mountain Lion Server so my family can have separate logins via Screen Share to their iTunes.

Using Mountain Lion Server so my family can have separate logins and connect via Screen Share.
Works great, each has their own home directory and permissions are perfect.
Now setting up iTunes for each with their own Library (not shared), thus keeping multiple Libraries.
    I get this;
This Computer is already associated with an Apple ID.
If you download past purchases with your Apple ID, you
cannot auto-download past purchases with a different
    Apple ID for 90 days.
    What!
So what it is on the same computer, they are completely separate Libraries never to be mixed.
If this works, I only need to keep one computer up and running, instead of three.
Each can do their syncing/backup and connect to the various Airplay/AppleTVs I have around the house.
    How do I fix this.
    Thanks

Bottom line is you can't - easily.
You need to make sure that you log out of the server each time otherwise the ID is running. To explain, if you had a laptop with different people using it, your solution works fine. Each time someone logs in, the iTunes ID is different so it works as you can only have one person using the laptop at any one time.
Now, turning your problem inside-out, you want people to be able to log into iTunes concurrently to use their own version of the program with their own library. This does not seem to work and you get the conflicted ID error message. Even though iTunes is running under their own login ident, I have never been able to get this working reliably and was told that iTunes is NOT a network-aware application as it is designed to be single user.
The way I got around this was to login as XYZ and to make sure that the ID was changed in iTunes accordingly. However, it did not always work so I gave up with the whole thing.

  • After upgrading to mountain lion I cannot use my HD TV as a display through my thunder port and HDMI cable ???

after upgrading to mountain lion I cannot use my HD TV as a display anymore using thunderport and HDMI , which worked before , does this mean I have to buy apple tv to mirror onto my HD TV

can it be something related to wi-fi?  I have read other posts talking about loss of connection using wifi.  I'm connecting my G5 through an airport express which is expanding my wifi generated from my Apple Time Capsule. It is quite difficult for me to relocate the server close to the Time Capsule and vice versa but if it works, at least that would be something.  It was working with Lion about 3 months ago - showing up in Finder, etc.

  • Mountain lion - wake from sleep - destroys hdd

I upgraded my macbook pro mid 2009 model to mountain lion.
First crash - left my computer for 3 hrs playing music using iTunes. Hdd went to sleep, screen is sleeping as well. I moved my mouse and everything froze. Music stopped. Waited for a minute. Nothing happened. I forced shutdown by holding power button for 5 seconds. Reboot failed because hdd can no longer be detected. (Gray folder with question mark) Not even by the install disk.
I brought it to the service center and they replaced my hdd after i approved it. It works ok then. Reinstalled mountain lion and all my stuff.
Second crash - i left my computer for an hour playing music through Grooveshark. Screen and hdd went to sleep while music still played ok. I moved the mouse to wake from sleep but the screen remained black. I can see the cursor not moving but the music was still playing. I put down the lid and waited for a few seconds before turning it on. Screen was still black except for mouse. Music stopped when i closed the lid. I forced shutdown by holding the power button for 5 seconds. Reboot failed because the hdd cannot be detected. (Gray folderneith question mark) Not even by the install disk.
I'm going to the repair center tomorrow and have it checked again. It's only been a week since i got back from the repair center...
So i was reading about the issues with mountain lion waking from sleep where the hdd has slept as well. But it seems that their hdds were intact and they were able to reboot. Mine however, has left my hdd as a heavy paper weight.
2 things, how do I repair the hdds and use them again? Is the issue caused by waking from sleep with the hdd sleeping as well?
Note that in both occurrences, my mbp was plugged in.
Or is it possible that the 2009 model just can't handle mountain lion?
I'm thinking of using ubuntu to force mount my 2 broken hdds and hopefully recover some of my data though all my important files and documents are in sugarsync and dropbox. (Thank God for online storage!) though this is quite detrimental to teaching...

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • Configuring postfix on Mountain Lion Server

I'm trying to upgrade from Snow Leopard Server to Mountain Lion Server and did an install of Mountain Lion Server on top of a working instance of Snow Leopard Server.  The "crippled" GUI on Mountain Lion Server is forcing me into using terminal to configure Postfix to handle incoming email.
I would like to configure Postfix to only accept email that is forwarded from a gmail business account.  The public email address is [email protected] which is received by Google Mail, goes through their spam filters and then is auto-forwarded to  [email protected]
The server WAN domain is nonpublic.com  The ip address is 96.231.165.126
The server LAN is nonpublic.local  The ip address is 10.6.18.201
The server is a MacMini running Mountain Lion Server 10.6.8 hostname server so the FQDN is server.public.com.
The network on the MacMini is configured to handle both LAN and WAN traffic through the 1GB physical ethernet port which plugs into a CISCO 3750 switch.  The external traffic to the WAN flows through the switch as tagged packets.  The LAN traffic is not tagged.  The VLAN connection is running 802.1q
When an email is sent through the WAN to [email protected] the Postfix SMTP log shows:
    Jun  7 19:29:22 server.public.com postfix/smtpd[42181]: connect from cisco.public.com[96.231.165.123]
    Jun  7 19:29:22 server.public.com postfix/smtpd[42181]: disconnect from cisco.public.com[96.231.165.123]
I can send emails from a client on the LAN through this server with no problems.  The incoming mail server can connect to the machine via the Cisco router/switch but Postfix just shows "cisco" as the connection (that's the router's DNS name) and provides no more info.  I suspect Postfix possibly doesn't like the 802.1q connection and drops the SMTP request to connect on port 25.
I have turned on "debug" logging in Postfix, but that is all that appears in the SMTP log file
I've spent most of the week reading through everything I can find on how to install and configure postfix on Mountain Lion Server and work around the cripled GUI in the "server" application.  I'm barely OK using Terminal and not familiar at all with configuring Postfix directling editing the config file.
What is the best approach to configure Postfix to allow SMTP connections from the outside to deliver incoming email that is forwarded from gmail.com?
I did find an "aliases" file in /etc/postfix/aliases but I'm not sure how to add the aliases and if adding aliases with a text editor is going to cause the "server" app problems and if the changes will be lost when the machine is restarted.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I agree that I should change the LAN domain from .local to something like .internal or whatever.   I've been running with .local for 5 years  on snow leopard server and never had any problems so that was a low priority.
I hope I'm just not seeing some obvious setting in main.cf

  • Additional email address for user in mountain lion server

I have a new installation of OS X Mountain Lion server (10.8.2) that I am wanting to deploy.  The problem that I am running into now is that there is no way that I have found to add a second email address.
I have multiple domains so, i need to have "[email protected]" and "[email protected]" for the same user.
Has anyone seen a way around this?

Wow - just after I answer back, I found a download for the Workgroup Manager at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1567.  I probably need more sleep.
Yes, it is just Server Admin that is no more, Workgroup Manager is still at the moment available.
For your information another less pleasant means would be to directly modify the Open Directory record using either the command line or the Directory Editor launched from Open Directory Utility which in turn is launched from the Login Options "Join..." button.

  • Mail Server problems with Mountain Lion Server

I am have issues with the Mail Server though. As long as I dissable everthing but the Blacklist filter all works fine. If I enable Junk Mail or Virus filters I get this:

  • Performance issues home sharing with Apple TV2 from Mountain Lion Server

I have a Mac Mini which I have just upgraded to Mountain Lion Server from Snow Leopard Server.
I have noticed that the performance of Streaming a film using Home Sharing to an Apple TV2 has degraded compared to the Snow Leopard setup. In fact the film halts a number of times during play back which is not ideal.
I have tested the network between the 2 devices and cannot find a fault.
Has anyone come across this problem before.
Are there any diagnostic tools I can use to measure the home sharing streaming service to the AppleTV2 device.
    Any help much appreciated

Well, I tried a few other things and one worked but again just the first time I tried connecting to the desktop PC with iTunes. I flashed my router with the latest update and the ATV2 could see the iTunes library and I was able to play media. Later in the day I was going to show off to my daughter that I had fixed it and, to my dismay, no go. I tried opening the suggested ports but no luck.
I then tried loading iTunes on a Win7 laptop and it works perfectly with the ATV2. Both the laptop and the ATV2 are connected to the router wirelessly while the Desktop is connected to the router by Ethernet. Not sure if this is part of the issue as it sounds like this didn't work for others. The only other difference between the laptop and desktop is that the desktop has Win7 SP1 loaded while the laptop does not; now I'm scarred to load it though I don't think that's the issue. All in all, a very vexing situation. Hopefully Apple comes up with a solution soon.

  • Password problem after migrating to Mountain Lion Server

    Hello everyone,
Yesterday, I migrated our Lion Server to Mountain Lion Server. Everything seemed to work fine. Except since this morning, none of the network user cannot connect to their calendar, reminders, and wiki. They can connect to their account and to their mails. The following line appears multiple times in ApplePasswordServer.Error.log:
    Aug 16 2012 16:52:50 700250us    client response doesn't match what we generated
It seems that only web services are concerned (vpn, mobile accounts, and mails are working). My initial guess is that the hash computed on the basis of the user password is not computed on the same way on the client machine (which is running Mountain Lion by the way) and on the server. On the other hand, this would be very surprising, since all this stuff is based on standards and unlikely to have changed since Lion.
I tried to create a new "Test" user. Even this new user, created after the migration, cannot connect to its calendar, etc. I also tried to reset my user password using the Server App. It makes no difference, the same lines appear in the logs.
Is anyone experiencing a similar problem ? Does anyone have a clue of what to try next ?
    Thanks a lot !

    I found out the following:
After looking at the contents of the password server database using the slot numbers of several user accounts, it seems that all users where WEBDAV-DIGEST authentication is failing, have two entries for the digest method "*cmusaslsecretDIGEST". This is obviously wrong. All users who can authenticate successfully have only one such entry.
Deleting and recreating the user account has no effect. In fact, updating the password server with a new entry may actually trigger this error. It could be that all users where this is failing have changed their passwords after the server was updated to Mountain Lion.
It would be interesting to know if you also see duplicate entries for "*cmusaslsecretDIGEST" in the database. You can display a password server record via the user account's slot number (in your example, the 0xd6ace...) using the command
    sudo mkpassdb -dump <slot-number>
At the end of the record dump, you should see 10 digest entries with their method identifiers.

  • Unable to add/remove users in Mountain Lion Server (Options are greyed out)

For some reason, im unable to add/remove users in Mountain Lion server. The + and - are greyed out. It seems like something is wrong with the permissons because it looks like it cant write the the Ldav3 file (although that may be speculation). Does anyone have any advice for me? I URGENTLY need to add users.
Maybe theres a way to restore default permssions for the boot drive (if that in fact is the issue). Hopefully there is a way that I can fix this while leaving all users, groups, their permissions and shares intact.

Anything interesting and relevent in the server logs?
Anything interesting in the server alerts?
Since it's far and away the most common cause of problems with OS X Server and with distributed authentication (Open Directory is entirely based on network encryption and digital certificates and on responses from your local DNS server(s)), verify your local DNS configuration is working and requires no changes with the following Terminal.app (Applications > Utilities) harmless, diagnostic command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
sudo requires an administrative password.  You might get a one-time warning about the sudo, and that can safely be ignored.  The command will display some details, and indicate whether the local configuration appears valid and no changes are required, or further diagnostics for (most) common errors that can arise.

    Hi Jason
I was getting the same behavior after Apple support had me delete some plist files to get Airplay going. I was also getting the following error:
the error occurred while processing a command of type 'writesettings' in the plug-in 'server vpn'
I went into ~/Library/Preferences/ and /Library/Preferences/ and deleted every plist contating the word server. I had to re-set up my server (meaning walk through some intial steps) but all of my settings were still there after that and everything started working again.
Just a thought, obviously try at your own risk but it worked for me.

  • How To Set Up Mountain Lion Server/Point DNS to Mac Mini Server

Hello, First of all I have no experience with setting up servers whatsoever. Below is what I have
    - Mac Mini with Mountain Lion Server
    - Time Capsule as my router
    - Comcast as my service provider
My goal is to set up my MacMini as a sharepoint for files and other data with my other partners.
    - I have purchased a domaine name from NetworkSolutions. Does this mean that they are my DNS hosting as well? Not really sure. My biggest question is how to point my DNS to my mac mini server correctly.
    1. How do you point the DNS to my mac mini server.
    2. I've read somewhere to use the IP address from my mac mini server. The only IP address I see is from my Time Capsule (router). I know what my public IP adress is but I am not sure if that's the one to use. I think once I figure this DNS thing I can figure out the rest.
Thanks - Need lots of help.

Here's a detailed write-up on setting up internal (private) DNS on OS X Server, and no, you're probably not going to be setting up external DNS on your servers.  Your public DNS service will be hosted on and served from the Network Solutions DNS servers.

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I cannot open my File Maker Pro files. Can I use Numbers to open these files?

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I cannot open my File Maker Pro files. Can I use Numbers to open these files?

Numbers is a spreadsheet program and FileMaker is a database program, so you probably can't use Numbers to open them unless you had first exported them from FileMaker in a spreadsheet-compatible format.
If you upgraded from 10.6 Snow Leopard or earlier and your old copy of FileMaker won't open anymore, it might be a PowerPC application that is not compatible with 10.7 and later. If that is the case, to work with your FileMaker files you should upgrade your copy of FileMaker to the latest version, which seems to be FileMaker 12.
