Mountain Lion slow to find computers on network
I'm on a University network and we have several computers that are networked in our set of buildings. It used to be that when I opened up the finder window the list of "Shared" would have several computers listed in it as well as an "All" selection. This no longer happens under ML. So I have to open up the Network option in Finder. When I do this it takes ML several minutes to "find" the other networked computers and populates the list one computer at a time. It does the same things for the different workgroups. In Lion this list would come up very quickly and I wouldn't have to wait around for the list to populate. Is this a common problem in ML or is there a way that I can fix this? This is happening on my 2008 Alum. Macbook running 10.8

Sadly I'm back. Things worked fine for a while but starting up takes about half an hour and I just can't spend the rest of my life waiting for the little ******* to do its thing...
The Hal beachball is back and every piece of software even the finder crashes constantly...Force Quit is not my friend.
My most recent attempt to keep my sanity was to wipe the drive and reinstall Snow Leopard from the original disk. Hal is still not happy.....
Is there anything else I can do?

Did you have the original iLife CD? I am pretty sure that your machine ships with it (could be wrong). If you don't have it, you can contact Apple and ask for them to send a replacement free of charge. It had to have gotten on there somehow originally.

Instead of getting a wireless card for the Mac Pro, you might want to consider getting an 802.11ac wireless bridge device that would enable you to connect more than one device to it by Ethernet cable and to eventually take advantage of the faster 802.11ac wireless standard.

How to get Mountain Lion Spotlight to find text in CSV files?
Does anyone know how to get Mountain Lion Spotlight to find text in CSV Files? Spotlight worked flawlessly with Snow Leopard on my last MAC but with Mountain Lion it doesn't recognize CSV Files. I have researched this extensively and haven't found any solution but I really believe there must be many others who have the same problem. I even contacted Apple's Genius Bar which was of no help whatsoever, they couldn't even tell me why Spotlight wasn't finding text in CSV Files, i.e., function dropped by Apple, bug, etc.
Thru research I found that if the CSV Files are converted to 'Plain Text Files' Spotlight will find text inside of the files but I typically save my spreadsheets as CSV Files and don't want to have to convert them to Plain Text Files just so Spotlight will search them.
I appreciate any help you can give.
JoelI should have mentioned earlier that I do NOT have any exclusions set under the Spotlight Privacy tab, however, I did move one of the folders that contains CSV Files in then back out of the Privacy tab to try and get Spotlight to index the folder, but to no avail.
I have a second Admin account and tried to find text in CSV Files while in that account, again to no avail. I also tried upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8.4 to see if it might fix the problem, but no soap.
Below is a screenshot of the Systems Preferences/Library/Spotlight/RichText.mdimporter/ file and I don't even see where Spotlight is setup to find CSV Files on my computer, very confusing but thanks again for your input. -

You will need to call Apple as it is no longer listed in the app store. After paying for it, they will send you a redemption code via email you can use to download it.

How do I download Mountain Lion to the other computers at my home without additional cost? I downloaded 10.8 to my main IMac but have two additional computers in my home.?
Install 10.6.8 on the other computers. Sign into the App Store with the same Apple ID used to purchase Mountain Lion. Click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. Locate your Mountain Lion purchase entry which will show an active Install/Download button to the right of the entry. Click on it to download to the computer. If you don't wish to download Mountain Lion twice, then do this:
Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
3. Locate the saved Mountain/Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the content of the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
Double-click on the InstallESD.dmg file to mount it on your Desktop.
Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the mounted disc icon from the Desktop into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable installer that you can use without having to re-download Mountain/Lion.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.
As an alternative to the above you can try using Lion DiskMaker 2.0 that automates the process. -
We recently started using Mountain Lion at work, installed it fresh on a formatted server and we're having some terrible problems with the network. We have reinstalled twice and the problem persists;
Its running terribly slow on the local network. Downloading a small (~2MB) PDF is taking around 30 - 60 seconds. Internet is running fine, downloading goes at a realistic speed, on both the server and the machines we are trying to connect locally.
The server is connected via ethernet, the other machines we have connected via ethernet and WiFi with no difference. Everything is running slow, Wiki Server, Profile Manager, WebDAV, etc.. Initially we thought it was due to the server memory, as it was running around 90% usage, but after upgrading it we're still having the same issues. A lion server in the exact same situation works fine.
Any advice would be appreciated.Here are the netstat results.

i am update my ML yesterday, i have 8G memory core 2 duo 2.6 hd 500gb.
anyway my mountain lion now need like 4 5 minutes to load when i am restart, before i load system very fast in 40 seconds.
and the first minutes after load the system everything is slow, i check if the memory are installed but i see the 8g run.
the first time open programs it is very slow after that the programs start be very fast, chrome is slow everything slow.
i test smart utility and my hd is passed, i am install the ML from zero, i put the new hardrive format and install, working very fast and great, today start that

I recently came home from vacation a few weeks ago. Mac was powered down for 5 days. Started up machine and noticed a lag whenever I clicked on a web page. Page starts to load, there is a 10-15 second delay, then the rest of the page loads. It was extremely noticeable on youtube. Every action in safari or firefox was slow. Loading multiple youtube videos in different tabs was never a problem, now there is problems with videos loading extremely slow. Loading one video is nearly impossible. Web pages will load normal on one try, then a second later, you click to go to another page, extreme lag. Attempting to load flash style videos, lag when starting, bar on videos will load 1%, then lag for 10-15 seconds, then start loading the video's.
I got fed up and ended up updating to Mountain Lion after about a week. Along with using onyx to clean everything up. Installed Mountain Lion, speed seemed to return to 75% normal speed (original speed before problem developed). Lags were slightly there, but for the most part everything seemed good. A day or two later lag was back. Web pages are slow or laggy to load, videos inparticular. Sometimes I have to refresh pages because they stop loading halfway through.
Called my ISP they walked me through a bunch of tests and said the speed of the connection is fine, that it must be the computer. I pulled out an old Macbook I had (OS X 10.4) and there is no lag like on my iMac. There is no lag to start the loading of a video, then it starts, then the 10-15 lag, then continuing to load it.
Network set up is a motorola mstatea, apple airport express with airtunes, and an at+t microcell. mac is connected via airport to the wireless network. lag is still present with direct ethernet connection to modem.
One of the main uses of this machine is listening to multiple youtube videos during my work day. I used to be able to put a few in a queue, let them play. I now have to get up and go to the computer on every new video, to pause the playing of the video while it buffers and deal with the lag.

Why did Mountain Lion slow down my shut down and boot up time for my MacBook Pro?
I had Snow Leopard, and not Lion. My shut down time rose from about 5 seconds to 10-15 seconds. My start up time also increased noticeabley. Any reason why because I thought Mountain Lion was supposed to be faster.
I have very few apps other than what came on my MBP. I've checked most other, really dont think this is the problem. My MBP is not junked/cluttered up. Not many programs, just pictures, videos, and some docs. Everything seems to work smoothly once on, but the start up and shut down times are still double what they were when I bought with snow leopard (Not Windows like, but scary close). I cannot find any solution that will work. My opinion, should not have to do a clean install for it to work. Some folks have not experienced these issues, so I think its some setting or something else that is my problem. I have 4GB RAM, and considering increasing to 8, but from what I have read else where thsi will not increase boot or shutdown, way even increase. Right now, not sure if the new ML features out way the slow boot and shut down.

Copy (command-C) the selected text to the Clipboard. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste (command-V) into the box that opens, then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. If you get a warning that the file is in use when you try to empty the Trash, log out and log back in. -
Mountain Lion Slowing my Macbook!!!
I am using a 2010 Macbook. I have just installed os x mountain lion. The only bad thing about it is that my computer runs as slow as molasses in january. I have repaired the disk permissions and that didn't work. The rainbow circle showed up once when I was typing this and made me wait for over 10 seconds. Please help me!!!
My computer is almost unusable.I looked at it and thought it might be the memory and that wasn't it, so I still don't know how to fix or really what the problem is. All of the slowness happened when I upgraded from 10.6.5 to 10.8.2. I have repaired the disk, verified disk, and verified disk permissions all in disk utility. All aplications freeze up and load for like 10-20 seconds randomly. I have a 2010 mac so i'm pretty sure that it can handle the software (I think, don't really know a lot about computers).
