Mountain Lion software update problem
I have purchased Mac book pro in July 2012. I wanted to download the Mountain Lion software update. I have redeemed the same from the Mac store. The downloading icon has appeared but it does not seem to be progressing...what could be the problem??
In the past, I have taken certain larger upgrades from apple at non-peak hours (magically everything was installed quickly) other times I have taken large upgrades from apple at peak hours ( I took forever and I questioned what is going on) this could be the issue. "server load" or your ISP (internet service provider)
* peak hours (when a lot of people are off work down loading the newest os or applications)

Mountain lion software update problems
Hi,
so i have recently updated to mountain lion and im running into a few problems.
my machine is telling there is a software update in my app store
(this update is the bundle that includes the Safari 6.0.4, iTunes 11.0.3, iWork Update 9.3 and the AirPort Utility 6.2 updates)
when i update my machine, the download is constantly getting stuck at 'less than a minute remaining' and not completing downloading, no matter now long i leave the machine.
ive tried downloading all of these updates separately from the app store and website and the same problem keeps happening, leaving each download stuck at 'less than a minute remaining'
im at a loss as to what to do or who to talk to as i cant actually access my itunes to listen to any of my music since my update to mountain lion due to my old version being unrecognised by my version of OS X so i was hoping the itunes software update would solve this.
when i turn the power button off to restart the machine, as im unable to actually turn off the mac the proper way due to 'the download still being in progress' my mac is constantly getting stuck on the grey apple loading screen and the only way to get past the problem is to constantly delete the Pram on every start up (this is the only way i can actually access my desktop after a restart)
any help would be much appreciated.
thanks in advance. Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Mountain Lion Software Update date remains the same?
The Software Update date (last check) always remains the same, is this a temporary fault? Anyone else having this problem?
Hello,
I'm sorry I don't have really any more ideas, I agree I really couldn't be bothered to re-install Mountain Lion for this, if I were you I'd wait and see if 10.8.1 sorts it or make a Genius Bar appointment at an Apple store (if you live near one, mine is an hour away by train).
I'm also waiting on advice from my brother-in-law who maintains the Macs and Mac network in a publishing house. I'll post here if he says anything that might help.
I appreciate it is annoying but it may not be a problem even if it stays like that, when I bought my new MacBook pro (Snow Leopard) I used Migration Assistant to transfer my data from my white MacBook (also Snow Leopard) and from then until the release of Lion the following July the date was stuck on something like 28th November but updates still installed fine. I was pleasantly surprised when Lion jolted the 'last check' back into life, which is why I was annoyed it looked like Mountain Lion had frozen it again!
Anyway I hope it gets sorted, because although mine has updated I would like it to register my manual checks too. -
Mountain lion software update questions
I have a couple of questions about the software update process in Mountain Lion.
I know that the old software update has been ditched and now updates will be routed through the app store instead, but could anyone tell me where the list of installed updates is located? I ask because under System Preferences > Software Update the default check boxes suggest that updates will be downloaded and installed automatically, which is all very well but I would like some kind of notification that they are being installed/have been installed or I will worry that I am missing them.
Secondly as another user reports here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19080258 the 'Last check' message remains frozen on the day I installed Mountain Lion, i.e. it says that the last check was yesterday (July 28th) even though I did a manual check today (29th).
Thank you for your timeIn the past, I have taken certain larger upgrades from apple at non-peak hours (magically everything was installed quickly) other times I have taken large upgrades from apple at peak hours ( I took forever and I questioned what is going on) this could be the issue. Mountain Lion software update check frequency question
Just wondering if anyone could help me with this question please?
I believe that Mountain Lion checks for updates on a weekly basis. When I go into System Preferences/Software Update. Mine shows "Last check was Friday 19 July 2013"
This is more than 1 week ago and I wondered why Software Update is not checking on a weekly basis like its supposed to?Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. -
Mountain Lion Software Update Server?
Let me start by saying that I am no server administrator, but was convinced that setting up a Mac Server on a MacMini would be relatively straightforward due to Apple's history and claims...
Server app. Your own mini IT department.
The Mac is famously easy to use, and so is Mac mini withOS X Server. That makes it perfect for people who’ve never run a server before, or for overtaxed IT departments. The Server app will walk you through the setup process step by step. And if you want help at any stage, just choose the Help menu or click the Next Steps button.
Well, it's not really working for me...
After two weeks of internet research and changing setting on the server (a 2011 Mac Mini with RAID 1 1TB drives - I upgraded myself) and the later Server app running on top of 10.8.2 (installed from software recovery on new drives) I have been able to get my Mac computers (a MacBook Pro and an iMac both running 10.8.2) to connect to the server and have it operate as a file server.
Several users now have their own log in details and home directories (on the server) and iTunes is operating using 'Home Share' from the server to all clients.
I've been trying to set up the Software Update Server and have, I think, successfully set up the server with the correct address and turned on the service. (I'd post a screen shot, but there is little to see: the 'button' is on and the settings are on 'Automatic'. All updates now show as 'Enabled' after about 3 days of the service running.
I am using address: http://myservernamehere.local:8088/index.sucatalog in Profile Manager on the server under 'Software update' in 'Device Groups' (I have added the computers to the group). I cannot find any other settings to adjust on the server, and have had little luck following Apple support documents.
I have reviewed this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2794 and read this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4069 and generally gone round in circles.
Can anyone explain in simple terms why the App store on the clients keeps showing an update available (Java for OS X 2013-002 1.0) and when I click on 'Update' I get the error 'Could not connect to the server.(-1004)'
I'm totally confused by this and will dispute Apple's claims that "It is perfect for people who have never run a server before".Hello,
I have yet to setup this up but it does not make any sense to me as to why the admin would have to login to the local computer to get updated. This defeats the whole point in my opinion. You can try giving the network user admin rights of the computer and see if it works.
1. Login as the network user.
2. Open System preferences and go to users and groups.
3. Check the box "Allow user to administer this computer"
You may have to restart and then test it to see.
The only other thing I can think of trying on the local side is joining the computer to server if you already have not done this.
Thanks,
ebrind -
For me it seems to take twice as long to check for updates under ML than it did under SL. Anyone else? I think Apple took a big step backwards by combining software update with the Apple Store. I wish they woud separate them again as they did in SL.
John, this isn't a question, so the post will probably be taken down.
I agree with you 100%!

Mountain Lion software update on App store
Hi, when i select software update it now directs me to the app store update page, is this the way it is supposed to work?
is everything like Java or things from other companies that support Mac functioning going to come the same way through the app store?
and how will we see what updates we decided not to do? will there still be a list to do them later?
what about "Automatic Updates"? still available?
this was a surprise to me... -
my macbook pro hard drive crashed while running an OS software update. I had purchased lion then mountain lion software updates a while back and so my system was running on mountain lion.
Now that i have replace my hard drive, i cannot find the purchased updates / apps on my appstore! why is that and how can I restore those updates? You didn't mention if you clicked on the "Purchases" icon.

I recently purchased the Lion and Mountain Lion software to upgrade my MacBook Pro enough to be able to install Maverick (I realized now I only need Lion but oh well). I'm currently running on OS X 10.6.3. I have codes to install Lion using the App Store, however don't have the App Store installed. I cannot install it, as it says I must be running a version of OS X 10.6.6 or higher in order to install the App Store......Am I just completely screwed here??? Does anyone know another way to install this software without the App Store?! Thank you!!!!
1. You don’t need Lion either.
2. Run the Software Update pane of System Preferences or install the 10.6.8 combo updater manually.

I am going to update my iOS from 10.6.8 to Mountain Lion. What problems will I face with third party applications? Alberto
Are my applications compatible with Mountain Lion?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps. -
I just installed the new mountain lion software on my iMac. I was currently running Snow Leopard. My problem is with my mouse. Now when I scroll down the page it moves in the opposite direction. In system preferences I tried checking and unchecking Natural for scroll feature. Movement from side to side works fine. Has anyone experienced this problem?
I think this new scrolling behaviour was introduced with Lion. You do get used to it pretty quickly (well I did). Are you sure that deselecting Natural Scrolling in Mouse Prefs doesn't re-instate the previous behaviour, it does here.

HELP... Since last week, I can not awake from sleep. After reading a review I downloaded Deep Sleep, but after the first deep sleep, my MBP (late 2011 with Mountain Lion), developed a problem restarting from sleep. I straight away uninstalled Deep Sleep, but the problem has increased.
Now when I try to awake from sleep, a grey screen with the apple logo appears with a progress bar underneath it, which slowly moves to the forelast indicator, then it stops and a audio signal starts. Three bleeps and pause.
Then when I press the on/off botton and restart the system, the underneath error reports appears with the heading RAPPORTD unexpectedly failed.
Can any one help?

Hi guys..!!
I would like to know if someone could help on this:
I just have a HP printer (HP Designjet 100) and for some reason I need to install a file for all the HP printers drivers in total 590MB to be able to use my printer in my mountain lion???
If normally the size of my files in the for previous software was more or less 5MB why now i need to install 590?
Some one could help me how to avoid installation of 590MB for my new mountain lion software???
ThanksIf you go to http://support.apple.com/downloads and locate the HP Printer Drivers installer, you will find that it is 473.4 MB (for version 2.11). If you install this, it will install the full set of drivers for every model of HP printer that is supported by the drivers distributed through Apple. The disk space occupied once installed will probably be larger than the download, since the downloaded file is compressed.
On the other hand, if you have an HP printer connected and you use Software Update (or the Update tab in App Store), that should offer you a much smaller set of HP drivers, which are only applicable to your printer (and possibly a few similar ones). These updates are typically only tens of megabytes rather than hundreds of megabytes.
If Software Update doesn't offer you any HP drivers then it either thinks you have the latest drivers installed already, or the printer model is not supported by the drivers available from Apple.
This article lists all of the printer models for which Apple distributes the driver:

HT1338 help with installing Mountain Lion software...!
i am trying to update my mac book pro with the mountain lion software. i have purchased this in my mac app store but do not see where to go from here to install... anyone know what to do? do i not have enough space to install the update? how do i tell?
What year is your MacBook Pro? Need to make sure you have the hardware spec for Mt. Lion. You should also consider 8GB of memory for reasonable performance.
Find how much storage: Apple Menu > About this Mac > More Info... > Storage
If you are within 80% of filling your current drive, you may have enough to install Mt. Lion, but the subsequent installation will not perform well due to storage saturation.
Before you update to Mountain Lion, you should do one last software update on Lion, then run Disk Utility and verify/repair permissions. Then back-up your home directory for safety, even though a Mt. Lion upgrade will not disturb your home directory.
If Mountain Lion actually did download, the installer is placed in your /Application folder as, Install OS X Mountain Lion. If you want a bootable USB Mountain Lion installer, now is the time to make it with Lion Diskmaker and a empty 8GB USB stick. After you run the Mountain Lion installer, it will de-install itself. Like Lion, you still have a bootable Recovery partition.
