Mountain Lion - Spinning Rainbow Ball of Doom

Ever since I tried accessing a document from Dropbox, I have been unable to login to my main account. I've tried disabling all start-up apps after logging in under safe mode. Other accounts work, but I can only access the main one in safe mode. Pasted the console record of frozen boot on main account below. I know it's a lot, but I'm baffled. Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks

Tried again, nearly same thing, with Finder almost finishing start up, showing some open windows that I can move, but then it freezes, and I can't launch any apps. Checked console and got a shorter string. Is this a software or hardware problem?
Thanks!

  • "spinning rainbow ball of doom" when I open the media inspector!

whenever I open the media inspector within iWeb I get the infamous "spinning rainbow ball of doom" and no matter how long I leave it the program has effectively crashed. I eventually have to force quit (the prompt tells me that iWeb is not responding). This happens every time and is highly annoying as I am forced to drag media from their host programs (iPhoto, iMovie etc). Can anyone help me?

Theres been some threads about this. I'll post the main solutions that can cause this.
If there are movies in your iPhoto, export them and delete from iPhoto.
Move the contents of your movie folders out.
If you notice iWeb works fine, import the movies back into the movie folder one at a time. After each import, launch iWeb, if it works great, if you notice you got 3 movies in and the fourth one caused the spinning ball, its that movie causing an issue.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Regually getting spinning rainbow ball

I've had my macbook since it was released last year and in recent months, when browsing the internet, I see the spinning rainbow ball thing so opening new pages is taking a few seconds longer than normal. It doesn't happen all the time but I'd say 70% of the time.
My wireless interent connection is always perfect (I'm always within a few meters of the modem) and always shows as full connectivity.
Someone said I need to do something with one of the disks that came with the computer. I'm pretty much a novice on Apples so please bare this in mind!! Thanks

  • Spinning rainbow ball when moving through a file

I'm on my macbook pro. Just got an Optoma projector. Just updated to Adobe Reader 8. When I am trying to move through a file window in Adobe, while my class is watching on the Optoma projector that is mirroring, I will click on the up or down arrows on the side of the window, and the computer will give me the spinning rainbow ball for several seconds before scrolling up or down. Is there some cache or file I need to be cleaning out to improve my computer's performance in Adobe Reader? Is it a problem with Adobe 8? or is the intervening variable that I have just started hooking up the computer to a projector? I have always had great answers posting and look forward to learning something else. Thanks.

    Hi

  • Safari 3.1.2 bookmarks and the Spinning Beach Ball of Doom

Safari has been one pile for me. I cannot change the toolbar components - the "Customize Toolbar Link doesn't work, Bookmarks? >

When I go to the Bookmark Menu Item: is what I see.
    To access my Bookmarks, this:
    is the only way.
as for anything Java related... KA-RASH - THE SPINNING BEACH BALL OF DOOM, and, sometimes, it just spins for the heck of it. I am not happy. Really not happy. and, ya know? You can't just drag it to the trash and reinstall. Or, can you?

Custom installs in Mac OS X 10.4...

"Here's a list of all the custom installation options available with Optional Installs.mpkg:
    * Applications
    o Address Book 4.0
    o iCal 2.0
    o iChat 3.0
    o iTunes 4.7.1
    o Mail 2.0
    o Oxford Dictionaries
    o Safari 2.0
    o X11"
Have you done any Disk maintenance lately?
Might try dragging this file to the desktop & reboot...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Or even Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.

  • Spinning rainbow ball

So I'm waiting (again) on Final Cut to gets its act together. How long to you usually let the ball spin before force quitting and reopening, loosing any progress since the last save/autosave?

Ha, good point. The Toshiba is my personal machine, and Windows 7 is in the mail. For what it's worth I've found Vista more stable than OSX, but I'm not looking for a flame war or anything silly like that.
At work I'm using a MacPro Octo 3.2 (late 2008) with 16gb ram and FCS2 on Leopard 10.5.8. I think the video card is nVidia, I know it has 512mb on the video card, but that's what I remember off of the top of my head. As for hard drives we've got one system drive, and internal RAID array, an external RAID array, (LaCie) and two other external hard drives, one LaCie, one WD. I'm at home right now otherwise I would look the specs up.
I seem to have troubles when I drop .motn files or use Motion Templates on my timelines. I seem to spend about as much time waiting as I spend editing when I'm perfecting my graphics. The troubles with .motn files are when I open in editor, make a change in Motion, save, and go back to Final Cut. I can spend two minutes waiting to do anything between a save in Motion and returning to FCP and being able to do something on a short (4 minute or less) timeline and a 10-15 second clip from Motion. That's with the spinning rainbow ball mouse, not the Final Cut is working mouse.
I'm thinking back to the project before the one I'm working on now, I had a 15 minute timeline with about 10 instances of one Motion template, a lower 3rd with two text fields. If I would update the template I would be waiting about 8 minutes between saving in Motion and being able to do something in Final Cut, again with the spinning rainbow ball. One in five times FCP would just crash all together, so save, then Open in Editor became a routine part of my workflow.
I'm still a student and I've had similar issues putting .motn files on timelines using the school's computers, so I don't think I have a bad Apple at work. What is a normal waiting time?

  • Upgraded and getting spinning rainbow ball constantly

I upgraded to Firefox 3.6.15 a few days ago. I also upgraded Flash. I'm getting the spinning rainbow ball almost every time I try to do something in Firefox now—when I type something, it stops after every 10 keystrokes and spins, when I scroll down a page it pauses to think, when I click on a dialogue box or to a field.
Also, whenever I try to save or print something, the dialogue box will pop up but then instantly disappear before I'm able to click anything.
I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.6. My Macbook is about two and a half years old; I'm wondering if this is just related to the age of my computer. I have plenty of memory available.

  • Mac Mini and spinning rainbow ball

I bought a refurbished Mac Mini 2.0Ghz from Apple about a year ago. It doesnt seem as fast as my older MacBook. I'm always getting the rainbow ball...should I upgrade the memory or is it something else? I currently have 2GB.

  • Spinning beach ball of doom. Safari and Firefox.

Just recently updated my mac to 10.6.2 and have been getting a lot of spinning balls of doom usually when I use Safari and Firefox. It comes up every time when I go to sites involving Flash like youtube, apps on Facebook, or music Myspace profiles. It would never go away so I always end up force quitting the browsers. As my default browser, I use Firefox. In version 10.6.1, there was rarely a spinning ball of doom. Once I updated to .2, then I noticed that Firefox would startup very slow and started having the problems so I ended up using Safari but the problem never goes away. I have to juggle around browsers to see if it would act normal but it was always the same. In about 3 hours of using my MacBook, I have Force Quitted Firefox about 4 times, and about the same if I use Safari. Is anyone experiencing this problem? What should I do? Is this the usual problem for version 10.6.2?

By only reading your subject line I suspected Flash to be the culprit and you stated this yourself in your message. So I'm pretty sure you need to update your Flash version. Of course it's possible that you have other Internet Plugins installed which are incompatible with 10.6, but I'd start with updating Flash!

  • Mountain Lion spinning pinwheel

Ever since I installed Mountain Lion I keep getting the spinning pinwheel.  Type my name might get 2 letters then there is the spinning pinwheel any suggestions?

How long since you installed? It might still be indexing Spotlight and/or Time Machine. Check their icons for activity.
If they are not indexing, open Activity Monitor, click 'All Processes' in the menu on the right, and click the %CPU tab in the window till the little arrow is pointing downwards.
Is anything using 80% or more %CPU? If so, what is the name of the process?

I have consistent problems with Safari 4 on my home laptop. Long "Loading" messages and/or spinning beachballs on start-up, and sometime hangs. After start-up, spinning beach balls, extreme latency after clicking. I've tried everything I can think of, clearing cache, cookies, et cetera. I've disabled
java, javascript, and plug-ins. I have hundreds of bookmarks, but my iMac at work has no problems with the same set of bookmarks. I have tested Safari with a dummy account on the same machine, and see no slow-down there, so it's something my account has only at home. Firefox is ok. I just restarted Safari a few times: 15 seconds of "Loading" to get the google home page. First click on news gives a 5-20 second beachball or sometimes nothing, and from then on it's beachballs of random duration at random times. I'm out of ideas, and very frustrated.

  • Mountain Lion the rainbow spinning disc is sometimes blue, why

I have noticed that the spinning disc - familiar as a rainbow - is now occasionally blue. Why and in what circumstances?

Are you sure it isn't blue under an arrowhead?  Like, the ordinary mouse pointer but with the tail replaced by the blue spinning disc?  I see this most frequently when using my Box.com account.  It also used to be used to indicate work-in-progress for Java applications, but I haven't used a Java app in ages now.
Either way, I think it's just a progress indicator for certain web-based technologies.

  • Spinning rainbow ball of freezing death/annoyance issue.

my issue started a month or 2 ago while playing diablo 3 and happened everytime i played. it would freeze and give me the rainbow spinning ball. nothing i could do to close the game would work so i had to do a power cycle each time. that issue would only happen when i played that game. but not anymore, starting on the 4/10/15 it now happens all the time regardless of what I’m doing. it’s doing it right now as i type this at random times and the length of the freeze is 5 seconds to 1 minute. the freezing is so bad now, and i just know someone will ask me to go to the 'console' but i have tried many times to do that but the freezing is so often i can't get any info. any help or suggestions would be nice. i do live 30 minutes from a apple store so i could go to the genius bar, does it cost to do a diagnostic?

  • Mountain Lion spinning beachball

    Hi Folks
    Any ideas wiyh this ?
Installed ML and now wish I hadn't. At least once a day, Im hanging with the spinning beachball and Im having to power off. The last couple of times its after a wake. Safari is usually the first to start spinning, then mail and calander. This never happened with Lion.
I Have VMWARE Fusion 4 on the machine as well.
I do notice when I hit the spacebar it takes about a second for the screen to appear.
Im running a 2010 IMac 2.93 Quad Core 16Gb mem
This is a fragment of the system.log at the time of the hang

    Same issue for me.
    my post: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19246571#19246571
Perhaps related to the time for seting up the network and first request of Safari....
Have you call Apple support ?
    It's my next step...
    Apple, please investigate.
