Mountain Lion the rainbow spinning disc is sometimes blue, why

I have noticed that the spinning disc - familiar as a rainbow - is now occasionally blue. Why and in what circumstances?

Are you sure it isn't blue under an arrowhead?  Like, the ordinary mouse pointer but with the tail replaced by the blue spinning disc?  I see this most frequently when using my Box.com account.  It also used to be used to indicate work-in-progress for Java applications, but I haven't used a Java app in ages now.
Either way, I think it's just a progress indicator for certain web-based technologies.

Check to see if you have a folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the root level of your hard disk. That can cause this error message.

  • Why do I keep getting the rainbow spinning wheel in Garageband 11

I have the latest MBP (see specs below) and I was recording today with Garageband like I always do.  I was using my MOTU 828 MK1 8 channle audio interface with the lates compatible Lion update from Sept 2011.  I have never had any problems untill last night.
I was recording an acoustic project consiting of 4 raw 'real instrument' acoustic guitar tracks with no effects, which I had no problem recording each track by itself.  Next I recorded 1 raw 'real instrument' bass track with no effects then no problems.
I ran into the problem when I started adding the next 2 raw 'real instrument' vocal tracks and 1 click track.  So my project has a total of 8 tracks.
When I was recording the vocals everything was going fine untli I tried to do another take and when I pressed the record button I got the rainbow spinning wheel. I let it spin for 2 mins and then went to Forc Quit and noticed GB had stopped responding.  So shut down my audio interface and re-started the MBP.  Once the MBP was up and running it could not find my MOTU audio interface or the built in audio device on the MBP.  So I shutdown the MBP for 30 seconds and turned it back on and my MOTU was recognized and I was able to select it in GB.  So I tried to record again with the same problems.  I went through this process for 3 times and the fourth time GB told my I had too many tracks.  So again I shut down my MOTU then shutdown the MBP then once MBP was up I opened GB, turned on my MOTU, selected it as the audio interface I wanted to use and then went to GB preferences and under the 'Advanced' tab I changed my audio resoultion from 'better' to 'good'.
Needless to say that did not work and I am not able to add anymore tracks to this song.

    I would appreciate any suggestions.
    Thank you,
    AJ

Try throwing out all GB preferences, and maybe Caches as well. Then restart GB (preferences and caches will grow back) and see if that helps.

Extensions can sometimes be the cause of problems. If the problem does not occur in Safe Mode, then you can disable your extensions one-by-one until you find out which one is causing the problem. See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]

Software upgrades do not generally damage hardware; your drive's failure must be co-incidental. On most MBP's, a hard drive is very easily replaced by a user. You might want to check out this site for both hard drives as well as install videos (check which model you have so you can check the correct video):
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/
    hard drives:

I just recently upgraded my MBP with an SSD; I purchased an kit with an external enclosure from OWC and cloned the current drive to the new one, installed the new drive and was done in no time.

I have tried installing a disc to try and reinstall the operating system.
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.
If you did manage to reach the desktop after doing any of the above
my battery was dying after a few minutes so I was trying to kill the battery and recharge it to see if I couldn't get it back to a full charge.

There have been a few threads about this.  The feature seems to have gone missing in Mountain Lion even though the Help for Preview still mentions it.
I've filed a bug report on it.

  • After upgrading to mountain lion, the movies I create using iDVD periodically stop then resume abruptly when I play them back on my DVD player. Any ideas on correcting this?

After upgrading to mountain lion, the movies/slideshows I create using iDVD playback in a jolting start/stop manner. This didn't happen with the prior os - playbacks were flawless. Any ideas, short of uninstalling mountain lion, on how to correct?

I know this is not much help. IDVD and Mountain Lion are working perfectly for me.  I know many others that use Mountain Lion with iDVD also.
I think your problem lies elsewhere.

I also notice that each contact says iCloud in it twice, but when I go to iCloud.com, there are no duplicates either. Help..

    mdd770,
    Try Contacts>Preferences...>Accounts...remove {-}/re-add {+}your iCloud account.
If that is not successful, follow the steps listed in iCloud: Troubleshooting iCloud Contacts.

  • Catch 22 With Mountain Lion the Airport utility

Mountain Lion the Airport utility tells me I need to download Utility 5.6 for my old airport express. I download it (not 5.6.1) and it tells me it can't be installed on my mac volume with 10.8. What next?

    What next?
The workaround, since Apple does not give you one.

Or, if you have another Mac handy that is running Snow Leopard or Lion, you can install AirPort Utillty 5.6 on that device normally and use that Mac to configure the Express.

  • After installing mountain lion the local mail boxes disappeared

after installing mountain lion the local mail boxes disappeared.

    This is my problem too:
All of my local mailboxes (On my Mac) disappeared from the sidebar.  However, I do not have the 'triangle' on the Inbox that I can turn to reveal the list of mailboxes -- that disappeared too (and nothing happens when I hover over "Inbox").  I do know that the mailboxes are still there, somewhere, because when I go to create a New Mailbox, I can navigate to "On My Mac" and the entire mailbox list shows up there in the dropdown.  How do I get them back onto my sidebar if the option to do that is no longer on the "Inbox" icon?
