Mountain Lion Unstable?
I have had this new MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion pre-installed, for a week now, migrating from OS 10.4.11 and installing new software and updates to old. I updated right away to 10.8.2.
Strange things happen:
- Windows and apps open mysteriously
- When I eject a device from the finder window, the window closes??
- Last night, when shutting down, the computer Restarted "Because There Was a Problem." The problem turned out to be with Excel, which wasn't open when I shut down??
I found some discussions about Mountain Lion instability but, they seemed to be back in August. Is this an unstable system or do I have an individual problem?

One issue you are probably dealing with is the auto-resume function that was new to Lion and thankfully somewhat modified for Mt Lion. When you log in or boot the computer programs that were running when the computer was shut down or logged out are relaunched. Also files that were open in a program when that program was quit will re-open. This behavior can be changed by opening System Preferences, selecting the General Tab and clicking off the Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps option. Also when you log out or shut down you'll see an option in the dialog that pops up to reopen windows when logging back in. Click that off. These two actions should stop the mysterious file and app launching.
If you have a Finder window open to a device and when you eject that device the window does close. There's nothing for it to show any longer.
Are you sure Excel was quit - just because no application windows are open doesn't mean the application isn't running. One kernel panic doesn't mean trouble. One a day certainly does but not an isolated incident.
The box to click in General Prefs has now changed to "Close windows when quitting an Application" and a small explanation underneath says that, when clicked, those windows will not be restored when reopenning an app. I had it checked but am not sure when I did??
I usually keep open a Finder window in order to choose, in the left column, Documents or Applications or Pictures, etc. I expect that to remain and only the device to disappear. Else, I have to reopen the Finder window frequently. I still miss the hierarchal Apple Menu where I could install an alias of my Documents and scan across the entire Documents folder! Even back in OS 7, I had a third party app that would add that capability.
No, I am not 100% certain that Excel was not open. I certainly understand that an app can be open without windows. I frequently leave them that way and, I may have this time. Continuing to think about all this, it could be that all this strange behavior started when I installed MS Office 2011 and was dumb enough to let it Easy Install! God knows what it put on here! I may Uninstall it and do it over with just the wanted applications??
Thanks for your time and help!

How do I partition my MacBook Pro so I can keep Snow Leopard and also install Mountain Lion?
How do I partition my MacBook Pro so I can keep Snow Leopard and also install Mountain Lion?
I want to install the latest OS, but I already know that I will lose a lot of my software unless I can partition the hard drive and have two "bootable" drives.
How do I retain everything I have, partition the drive, then reloa the software I own according to which OS it will work under?msmedia wrote:
I do not currently own OS X ML.
I am currently running OS X (10.6.8 Snow Leopard) on my MacBook Pro. It has a 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor. I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion, but many of my software titles will not operate with ML and I cannot afford to replace some of them (Adobe Creative Suite, for e.g.)
After I back-up my HD and then partition the HD, how do I use the back-up to reinstall what I want to the SL partition, and then place the rest on the ML partition.
I have not done what you want to do, so can only offer some general thoughts in support. Take value from the following where you can. No guarantees.
If it was me, I would use a disk clone utility (e.g. Carbon Copy Cloner) to image the existing Snow Leopard disk to an external drive. Then verify that the external drive would boot and run Snow Leopard normally.
I would then purchase and download the Mountain Lion upgrade installer, but not run it. Use Lion Diskmaker to make a bootable USB stick, and perform a clean install of Mountain Lion, replacing the Snow Leopard on your MBP. This way, you make absolutely certain that no third-party drivers or other SL cruft remains to make Mountain Lion unstable. Update to latest ML point release. Fix permissions. Let TimeMachine make a full backup of your ML installation to a different external drive. Then turn of Time Machine.
In Disk Utility, use the + sign at the bottom of the ML partition to add another GUID, HFS+ Journaled partition for Snow Leopard. Resize to taste. Name it differently from your ML partition. Exhale.
Now ideally, you would like to reverse the external clone and put it back into the new SL partition. Then fix permissions. And demonstrate that you can boot into individually stable OS X installations. This would save you alot of work. Resist copying your home directory into ML just yet.
If you cannot successfully achieve the preceding paragraph, you will be faced with a full SL and application reinstall.
The ~/Library contents for SL and ML are sufficiently different that you do not want to mix them. You may want to salvage Safari bookmarks.plist. And, ML created folders in the home directory may have different permissions or ACL settings than in SL. So, my rule of thumb would be to copy folders that you created in SL, and only the contents of matching named OS created folders such as Music, Pictures, Downloads, etc.
For each operating system, you probably want the Time Machine settings to exclude the opposite OS X partition. If you use the same host name in Sharing prefs, then you will mix SL and ML backups on the same Time Machine back up drive. If you use different host names, they will be distinct folders in the Time Machine backups.backupdb and allow discrete restores per host. You may also want to gag Spotlight from indexing the opposite OS X partition. -
Fireworks CS6 unstable in Mountain Lion?
Hi folks,
I've got the latest versions of ML and FW and don't see any updates for FW. I am seeing increasingly bad behaviors in FW and fear it may be the end of the line for the program as Adobe seems to have abandoned any attempts to fix the program and is dropping it from CC.
Here are behaviors I see happening: It says it fails to save a new document, but it saves it anyway. It says item is open in another doc when it is not. It is still working but it just is showing signs of breaking down.
I rely on FW for web work and it creates much smaller files and crisper ones that Photoshop, plus it batches well for Dreamweaver and the like. I'm wondering if I am the only one experiencing these signs of age and incompatibility...
JeffI just downloaded Mountain Lion and I'm using it with FW CS5.1, and i'm noticing all the same issues, as well as odd behavior with the selction tool not working and requiring triple or more clicks to select tools and shapes.
So dissapointing. I also use FW for a lot of my work-flow. In fact it's my go-to tool for anything that requires a quick graphic mock-up ( I always liked the way teh color-picker picked up colors from outside the workspace without switcing apps) and i rarely use it in the ways it's supposed to integrate with Dreamweaver. Still, I'm using it constantly, most days, and it's a real shame that it's so unstable in Mountain Lion -

I've done 3 mountain lion installs but one remains unstable: A utility called Drag Thing stalls and when I kill it, the finder stalls. I have reinstalled the utility to know avail. Should I reinstall mountain lion? (the utility is stable on a macbook air and an imac....
Another thought - this is what I would do. Logic say says that faults are caused by hardware or software. Assuming that you have run your machine successfully on a previous OS, its likely to be software. After another erase and install, run the Mac using only Apple Software for a time, like Safari (view and download lots of sites); create docs in TextEdit and load images into Preview and save them etc; use Grab to capture screen shots and copy them to TextEdit and Preview; use iTunes by copying across some good quality music; install iPhoto with some reliable images, and Chess, and play with them; play video in DVD Player; use Photobooth; re-setup some of your email accounts by hand and use email. If there are no problems, install some reputable softwares like Adobe stuff and use them.
Then copy across manually some documents, music, pictures, movies and open and use them. Don't use Migration Assist or Time Machine etc. at all for anything because you might load some corruption previously dormant.
The idea is to increase the software gradually to see if any are causing the problem. Unfortunately, all this will take time and perseverence and prevent you from using the computer usefully. -
Mountain Lion on Mac Mini - WiFi unstable for Internet Sharing
I have a Mac Mini Mid 2010 MC270LL/A previously on 10.6.8 and everything worked fine.
I have it plugged into a Plasma TV via HDMI and network via CAT6, but it also doubles as a WiFi access point via Internet Sharing.
Previously WiFi was secured via WEP, I don't recall if 10.6.8 had anything stronger, most likely not, otherwise I would have gone WPA2.
I have now done a clean install of 10.8. ie erase hard drive, boot from USB and lay down a clean install of Mountain Lion.
Software update downloaded a new Firmware, which has also been applied and rebooted.
Now I've set-up Internet Sharing, used same SSID (maybe should have picked a new one in hind-sight), but secured via WPA2 - the only option.
Previously my Macbook Air 13" MC965LL/A, had undergone the same clean install treatment via wipe, then boot from USB and install 10.8.
The Wifi worked flawlessly with Macbook Air on 10.8 connecting to Mac Mini on 10.6.8 (Secured via WEP), no drop outs, connected even after sleep.
Even the power nap feature worked really well, I was impressed that when I open the lid on the Macbook Air, I had emails already waiting for me.
Now with the Mac Mini on 10.8, it's a really sad state, constant WiFi dropouts, my File Sharing disappears, Screen Sharing stops, it's a real pain.
I'm hoping it's not the new firmware, I guess I'll find out when I restore to 10.6.8 and see how it goes.
Anyone else have issues with Mac Mini WiFi on 10.8 ?This is the System log on the Macbook Air while sleeping - connected with wifi to Mac Mini under 10.8

Bridge will not start in Mountain Lion
I originally had this problem with Lion but a reinstall of the system cleared things up. Now since installing Mountain Lion Bridge bounces once in the dock and thats it. There is not even a recognition there was a crash.
So, I've been having a problem very like this and perhaps can offer a bit of insight. At least I found what was going south for me.
My problem looked like this: Start Bridge and there'd be a flicker of a window followed by a dialog with "Bridge is unable to perform this action" (or words to that effect) followed by a crash.
After reading this thread I tried the previously-unknown-to-me OPTION start. That didn't fix the problem but it did eliminate the crash!
Interesting.
Now this problem began for me when I upgraded to Mountain Lion a while ago. After that my system began to become increasingly unstable. When I bought a large SSD to be my system volume I thought it would be a good time to do a clean install of everything.
That went well, actually. Bridge worked in the new account I created! Wonderful! But I needed to use Migration Assistant to bring over my old account which had existed, more or less unchanged, since OS X 10.0! But then I began to have the same kind of instability I had seen before: Finder crashing, Path Finder crashing, and Bridge not working although the other Adobe products including Lightroom 4 worked just fine.
So I poked around and here's what I found: different Groups. In older versions of OS X the user account was a part of group Wheel. This time it was a part of group Staff. Different group numbers. Hmmm. So I started at the top level directory of Users where all the accounts live and I changed the Group, recursively, to Staff.
And then Bridge worked fine and there were no more Finder crashes, at least until I shut down for the night.
So you might want to check both ownership, group and permissions in your accounts and see if this is a part of the probem.
Why Mountain Lion (or maybe even Lion) changed the assigned Group for new accounts I cannot explain although, as I was walking the critters tonight and gazing up at the just-past-full moon, I wondered if it isn't because OS X Server can be installed as a layer over ML and this is a part of that compatibility.
Now I do think that by changing the whole tree heirarchy I may have changed invisible files that shouldn't have been modified. But for right now I'll live with that and see what happens.
Now I just have to try to get Microsoft Office 2011 to install...argh! -
Is possible to re-install Mountain Lion after Mavericks issues?
My mac became vary unstable after upgrade. Tech support was helpful but there is more issues now then before. They had me safe mode to check any programs that cause boot failure, safe reair and then reinstall new operating system. Now when it boots Finder goes on a tangent. Keeps asking about do you want to quit last program. All programs that are on the Mac came from the App store. The Mac is 2012 model that ran flawless until upgrade. If I revert to Mountain Lion, will I loose anything that was install earlier? And one other thing, I Cloud wants to be involved in everthing.
To completely restore your system from a Time Machine backup boot OS X Recovery by holding the ⌘ and r keys (two fingers) while you start your Mac.
Once the Mac OS X Utilities screen appears, select Restore from Time Machine Backup.
Select the TM backup of your Mountain Lion system prior to upgrading - their backup dates and OS X versions will appear, so you will be looking for the most recent backup of your system when it was running OS X version 10.8.5.
When it completes, your Mac will restart and your previous system state will have been restored. -
Can you install Lion over the top of Mountain Lion to get rid of these awful Logic glitches?
Folks -
I too have experienced the 'help! Logic is running away with itself and won't respond to me' scenario. I thought it was just me at first... I know there are several other folks that are having other problems ranging from annoyances to show-stoppers.
In my case, the biggest problem is that my Mackie Control (original; version 1.02)that has worked flawlessly in the past is plagued with the following symptoms:
Frequently is not detected or initialized when Logic starts up. This always worked prior to Mountain Lion.
If it IS detected, it will get a MIDI download from Logic so that all of the screen text and values come up, but none of the input functions (i.e. raising/lowering a fader on the control surface) are picked up/executed by Logic. I have tried different MIDI ports and cables and no change in the problem.
This control surface is pretty important for my workflow. I am seriously considering downgrading back to Lion, if it's possible.
Does anyone know if it is possible/safe to install Lion back on top of Mountain Lion? The glitches in Logic with Mountain Lion have made the system unstable and fairly unusable.
Thanks!
PeteTurns out that the problem REALLY WAS MOUNTAIN LION!
I had a clone of my Mountain Lion disk in my Mac Pro. I do a full clone every night, so I booted from that, and erased my primary disk.
Then, I used Time Machine to go back to just before I installed Mountain Lion and then booted from the Lion DVD that I had made when Lion launched (see Google for this). I recovered to my erased disk, and 2.5 hours later I had a full 10.7.4 system up and running on my primary disk. This WORKS!!! I have just tried Logic, and the problems I was having disappeared. The Mackie Control surface is now responsive, and I'll bet Logic doesn't run away anymore either. Great tools - Carbon Copy Cloner (I'm a registed user) and Time Machine saved my butt. -
Mac Pro Mountain Lion Kernel Panic Dual Video Cards
I've been getting constant panics since upgrading to Mountain lion on my 2009 Mac Pro.
Worth noting is I have dual GT 120 Video Cards and dual 30" LCDs. Every panic seems to be caused by com.apple.NVDAResman
This computer has been rock solid since 2009 and only after "updating" to Mountain Lion has it become unstable.
Was hoping 10.8.1 and 10.8.2 would fix the issued, but neither have. It's worse than ever. Crashing every day.
Already reinstalled the OS, tested the RAM, etc. No change. Still crashes everyday.
What should I do? It's really eating into productivity...

Hi all,
I am wondering if Mountain Lion does a hardware check for original hardware. I did a RAM upgrade 6 months ago (from 2x2Gb to 2x4Gb Dolphin 1333Mhz DDR3 on a an early 2011 MacBook Pro) and everything went smooth, I really noticed the upgraded performance.
My problem started after a firmware update (I was running Mountain Leopard). The system became really unstable, with a lot of programs crashing randomly and some crash black screens. I then decided to update to Mountain Lion with a fresh install to solve all the problems and clean up my computer.
I did it from a bootable USB drive using Lion Disk Maker and following these instructions with the harddrive completely formatted: How To Make A Bootable Disk Or USB Drive Of OS X Mountain Lion. The installation got stuck half way through and exited without any error message. After checking the log I got an error code (FAILED TO VERIFY ESSENTIALS PACKAGE). After diggin for a couple of days I found out in an old apple support discussion (Failed To Verify Essentials Package On Installation) that the problem could be the non-original RAM. I then replaced the RAM with the original one and finally was able to install the new OS without problems.
After the OS install and setting up my usual programs, I decided to go back to the upgraded RAM for extra performance and the crashes came back as before. So the newer RAM clearly caused the system to become unstable. So right now I am using the original RAM, I want to get extra RAM but not sure if it was a sporadic problem or it will happen with all the third party memories. Going to the official tecnical service will cost me more than 130€ while buying a third party RAM is around 40€. Is it really Apple pushing us to get original parts or I am just unlucky? Did someone else experienced something similar?Well, the upgraded RAM worked properly for 5 months straight. I don´t think it is a problem of dirt on the contacts or improper seating. Having the RAM not working properly the same day I want to update the OS, without touching it would be too much of a coincidence I think.
I am going to try the third party RAM again to be sure, trying to clean the contacts just in case, I will post the outcome later. -
I am running OS X Lion on a mid 2009 MacBook Pro with 4GB of ram and a 160GB HDD. I was going to download Mavericks from the app store but waited to long. Now that Yosemite is out Mavericks has disappeared from the app store. WHY? A person can buy and/or download Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion but not Mavericks??? And the kicker is that it was FREE!!! I just wanted to load Mavericks on my MacBook Pro to see how it performs. If I could live with any slow downs or quirks, I'd leave it installed. If not, I'd roll my system back. Apple's policy of ramrodding unstable product down our throat is BS. I don't want to use Yosemite until it has become more stable!
Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase a redemption code at the Online Apple Store: OS X Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. Use the code to redeem a download of Mountain Lion from the App Store. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless. -
Reverting back to OSX Mountain Lion
Can someone please tell me if I can revert back to OSX Mountain Lion from yosemite w/out affecting my backed up file's?
some of my files predate mavericks, other's don't.
Thank You!This is my Etre check since wiping my hard drive...can't seem to get rid of Macpaw for some reason. There is also still a "Hosts" issue. I am calling Motorolla today to discuss my modem & built in router as there also seems to be a "Wi-fi" network issue on this computer since the yosemite upgrade. Will this ever end? Is there a way for me to manually remove the leftover traces of Macpaw & also address the host's issue? Also wondering how to reset keychain so the constant password prompts for every single program including Chrome & Safari end. Computer is also still unstable and shuts down randomly since the reinstall. I am beyond frustrated at this point. Can you tell?
