Mountain Lion vs. Lion chat issues

Hi,
I have two laptops that I use for work; one runs Mountain Lion while the other runs Lion. I would like to be able to communicate between them through Ichat/messages, but I am unable to do so.
In addition, I would also like to be able to chat with someone who is using windows messenger.
Are there any ideas or solutions that could be sent to me, or should I just find a different program to use between all computers? I would greatly appreciate any insight possible.
Thanks!

  • Safari 6.2 does NOT work in Mountain Lion; huge issues

Question is does anyone have any ideas about this.
Also my purpose is to WARN people NOT to upgrade to 6.2!!!
15" mid-2013 MBPr running 10.8.5.  Upgraded to Safari 6.2 today and regret it mightily (this is why I rarely upgrade until FORCED).  Immediately, could not open most of my Google docs or Gmail. Kept getting this dialog:
"This error has been reported to Google and we'll look into it as soon as possible. Please reload your page to continue."
But I couldn't reload--the error kept continuing. Endless loop of click Ok and it comes back.  Plus, got colored spinning beach ball hangs on MANY other sites (including ironically Apple site to go to support  forums).  and every 3 seconds "webpages have stopped
NONE OF THIS was going on with the same tabs opened in 6.1.x or whatever it was before that. It was slow, but otherwise worked.
I tried to use Time Machine to go back to my last Safari app and of course got the message that Safari is necessary system software and could not be replace.
After trying to get through to tech support twice and getting disconnected (???) I got someone who told me it would NOT be possible in any way to downgrade to previous version of Safari.
I was further informed that "we cannot test new versions of browsers to work with all apps and be sure their functionality is not broken." I said "I would think Google, though, might be kind of a priority as one you would test." it's not like it's an OSCURE APP.
I was also told to upgrade to Mavericks so i could just use safari 7.1.  I do NOT want to upgrade to Mavericks for very specific reasons (not the least of which, besides this situation which happens all too frequently, is that there are other things that are broken in Mavericks as i can see on my 13" retina Macbook, particularly with Apple Mail, which I find very annoying, and other functionalities and interface things that I find less friendly in Mavericks).  I have one Mavericks machine and I want one Mountain Lion machine. Period. This should be OK.
I asked for a supervisor when the guy suggested i simply use a different browser like Firefox or Chrome.  Are you KIDDING me? That's your answer?
I use Chrome and Safari each for specific work things and Firefox for all personal. THat is how I organize my stuff. I edit Google docs related to one client's work  in Safari. THat is where my permissions are to access those docs.
I said that any released version Safari should work with major, hugely popular business apps and I should not have to SWITCH AWAY FROM SAFARi. If you are suggesting i NOT USE SAFARI, then it shouldn't be released. Period.
The supervisor told me that I could downgrade only by downgrading my whole system. Only way. (I later realized after I hung up--unless you can tell me otherwise--that means restoring my whole hard drive, NOT just my system,? Like FULL Time Machine restore of everything. If I could do JUST he system, I'd do it.)
He also said that it was "possible I could get Safari 6.2 working with Google docs"  IF I "played around with settings and preferences in Safari."
Um. I said, prompting him, ahem…since I called in for support, perhaps you could work with me to give me some ideas of what those settings or changes might be, rather than have me "randomly play with" it?
He reluctantly did so, screen sharing with me, had me do all the things I;d already tried (restring Safari, restarting computer, etc), closing and opening those docs. He saw the error message through screen sharing. he could not explain it. We played around with opening the docs from Drive or email instead of from the bookmarked tabs.
Sometime into the call, it stopped doing it.  We never knew why.  So he thought we'd solved it (even though no explanation for why it had been, never identified a consistent source).  He said "well, so Safari 6,2 DOES work."  But after we hung up, it started doing it again.  Mainly with Google (error message) but also with other sites (beach ball hangs).  I will not bother calling back.  I guess I either cant use Safari  or need to restore my whole system to get old one back (again, I don't want to go to Mavericks on this machine).
    Anyone got ideas?
What i find more concerning than the thing not working (which isn't insignificant ) is the lack of care and lack of knowledge that is now consistently apparent when I call for help, compared to how consistently awesome it used to be.
    Sad.
I would appreciate any insights anyone has gleaned re this issue. And again I caution against 6.2.   My machine works great otherwise, Safari worked fien before the upgrade,  and NO, i DO NOT have any anti-virus software!

    Happy to.  It's below.
Not everyone hijacked this thread thread btw--Danabeck for example said having EXACT same problem I am. Furthermore, the Sharepoint "fix" that worked, then stopped working is pretty weird.
and whatever is going on, it wasnt in Safari 6.1 with very same system. But sure--if something unneeded is causing problem with 6.2, I'd be delighted to dump it.

  • OS X Mountain lion download issues

Hi, I just purchased OS X Mountain Lion from the app store.
The download started ok, then my internet connection dropped (which is the issue I am trying to sove for as all my other Apple devices are fine and dandy when it comes to wifi connection except my iMac on OS X 10.7.5) and the download icon dissapeared from launchpad.
I went back to the app store, downloaded it again and now it's permanently stuck "waiting" even with the wifi on.
Any tips/tricks for making this download actually happen? Thanks in advance for any help.

    This has worked for some.
    - Sign out of the App Store (in the Store menu)
    - Quit the App Store
    - In Finder - Go>Go to folder...  (or Apple-shift-G)
    - Paste in the following "~/Library/Caches/ "
    - It will take you to a folder.  Delete com.apple.appstore
    - Launch the App Store.  Sign in and then reclick the Mountain Lion buy.  It won't charge you again.

  • Mountain lion performance issues

After installing 10.8 I am experiencing performance issues...is there anything that needs to be done to my macbook pro to improve usability?
    Tom

First post in the Mountain Lion forum. Second include some detailed information about your "issue."

  • Does anyone else have Mountain lion stability issues that cause a crash once a week?

I have a mid-2011 27-inch iMac with 16GB ram and upgraded to Mountain lion as soon as it was available (like always for last 5 years); 8th Mac I've owned. Early on there were a few bugs and issues that I thought would go away just like previous upgrades.  But it's been half a year now and I crash about every other day!  This is by far the worst Apple OS change ever, from a stability perspective.  What happens is I will do some mundane task (could be anything really) that will give be a spinning beach ball and then it gets worse.  No programs respond and eventually the only thing to do is complete power off shutdown.  What triggers this: clicking to open photo in Aperture, clicking a website icon in Safari, clicking upgrade software in App Store, running a backup with time machine, etc. etc.  I can't detect any pattern as it's happened a lot.  I'm a photographer so I spend more time in Aperture than most users and see a lot of crashes from there, but it's not just Aperture.  This is getting to be like MS Windows.  Apple - help!  Please fix this OS before I have to buy a PC for better stability.

  • Is the Mountain Lion battery issue fixed - question???

    Hello,
I've been reading that the latest update to Mountain Lion has fixed the battery drain.
Has anybody here got this release on a Late 2008 MacBook?
How is it running? Has the battery issue been fixed or improved?
    Cheers

You can look here to see if your battery simply needs replacing:
Go to About This Mac (under the Apple logo in the menu bar).  Then click "More Info", then "System Report".  Click the "Power" row on the left.  You should see major headers like "Model Information", "Charge Information".
Look under "Health Information" and find "Cycle Count".  How big is that number?  If it is around 1000 or more, it may well be time to replace the battery.

  • Mountain Lion Mail Issue

I have just upgraded to Mountain Lion.  Since upgrade I now have a problem with Mail v6.0 it works perfectly fine with two WPA Personal and WPA2 Personal WiFi networks, but not at all with my Uni WPA/WPA2 Enterprise network.  I get internet connection but cannot receive or send mail.  I have refreshed the networks.  I have reinstalled the software.  I have Used Connection Doctor but it says I have internet (green light) but get red for all mail pop and smtp accounts.  I am baffled why it works perfectly fine on personal networks only.
I am considering unloading Mountain Lion as no-one at Apple phone support or in the Apple store can explain or fix it.

Yes, I know. But the better you explain the situation, the more likely someone will understand what is going on and be able to help. You just copied and pasted what you wrote before, which I asked for clarification about.
There is nothing about Mountain Lion that is going to restrict your network connections. Mountain Lion may be interacting with your university network better and implementing university restrictions that were broken before. It may be just a coincidence of timing.
You mentioned POP accounts with your ISP. Most POP accounts are stricted to their home network. This is because they usually aren't secure. Every time you check your e-mail you are broadcasting your password. The default SMTP configuration has no security settings either. It is standard for networks to block this default activity. You are blaming Mountain Lion but it sure sounds like your university network and Mountain Lion are operating correctly. Such default e-mail setting are supposed to be blocked. They are doing you a favour.
Get the secure e-mail settings for your e-mail from your ISP. Use IMAP instead of POP. Both IMAP and SMTP can be configured to use secure ports and will require your account name and password. Once you use these settings, your Mail will work from anywhere.

  • Mountain lion wifi issue

Ok. This is super frustrating. Its been three generations now since this wifi issue. I have mid 2010 MBP with broadcom drivers. The wifi wont pass traffic with cisco APs. The only fix is disable 11n rates then only it will connect. I had to downgrade the driver to 10.61 etc to fix that issue. Today i upgraded to mountain lion and surprise.... My wifi is pretty much useless... Pings to default gateway are pn an avg 4ms and good minutes of ping losses..
This is just not acceptable. This is stupid and lame and apple nees to fix this pronto..
Geez apple is making billions of revenue and freaking cannot fix a stupid driver issue... I want my money back... And above all give me my time back which i spent to tshoot this problem...

This is on Mountain Lion drivers

and its about time you start admitting that there is an issue here. Also, publicly available bugs can be useful here as well...

  • Mountain Lion Graphics Issues (temporary fix)

Any help would be fantastic, from people with the same problem, or anyone who knows a fix.
I upgraded to Mountain Lion yester on my mid-2010 Macbook Pro, 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M
The graphics are glitching big-time, to the point where the computer becomes unusable, slow and sluggish. Mission control barely opens, and when it does, the screen-spaces up the top showing the desktops glitch out and are barely viewable.
I managed to find a temporary fix, I download gfxCardStatus, which allows you to force the machine to use either the intergrated or discreet graphics. Forcing use of intergrated graphics, ie the intelHD chipset, fixes the issue, so it seems to be a problem perhaps relating to the Nvidia card........
If anyone has an update on this issue, or are experiencing the same thing, im all ears! I'm a designer, so rely on the more powerful discreet graphics, and am only going to get so far running on the weaker intergrated.
    Cheers,
    James

On Aug 21, NVIDIA driver update 5.0.24 became available for Mountain Lion. This link is for U.S./Canada. In particular, support for the GeForce 300M Series (320 and 330) are included. Anyone want to try this update and report back if it fixes your discrete issues? The usual caveat about backing up the stuff you want to keep prevails. I would also locate and backup the current NVIDIA related kernel extensions, for safe keeping.

  • Mountain lion severe issues

I really hope Im the only one here..  I had to put my old hard drive with Lion back in just to leave this!  Mountain Lion has so many issues I dont know where to start.
Come on Apple, I switched to you to avoid all this!!!
    1. Software update doesnt work, times out and never gives you a reason.
    2. Time Machine restore doesnt work, again no reason.  (don't worry, I know how to use it)
    3. Safari wont even connect to apple support,  no I'm not kidding, it times out
    4. I get the spinning ball of death routinely
    5. Unable to import my pictures, says wrong version.
It's just buggy enough for me to bail.  I've read some stuff about resetting permissions and such, are you kidding me?
I had JUST newly installed it on a NEW SSD.  Jeez
hopefully they can work some bugs out and I'll try it again in a few weeks.

You might be OK if only you knew how to do it right. First is preparing your new SSD:
Drive Preparation and Installation for Mountain Lion
    1.  Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your SSD (the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. After formatting is done quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.

I can hook up my keyboard directly to my MacBook Pro (Late 2011, 8,2) and it works just fine, and it was working from the thunderbolt display until my update.
So, I'm assuming that this is a problem with Mountain Lion. Is there anything that I can do?
    Thanks!

  • Post-Mountain Lion iCal Issue

After upgrading to Mountain Lion my wife's iPod is no longer able to choose the calendar to add events in iCal.  You go to add an event and it only is added to the default calendar, and there is no option to change the calendar.  How can I chagne the calendar I want to add the event to? (I posted a screenshot of her iPod for clarity)  Is it because her iOS is outdated?

This previous discussion may help. It ppears to be related to iCloud which your iPod (since it has iOS 4.2 while iCloud requires iOS 5.X) does not support.

  • VPN to Mountain Lion Server issues

    Hi,
I checked a lot of VPN threads here today, but I wasn't able to find a solution for my problem just now. I try to connect by VPN to my Mountain Lion Server, but I get an error message that the VPN server is not responding. I get this message from iPhone and Mac. The Mountain Lion Server is a new installation, no upgrade from an older server.
    Some informations on my setup:
I installed the server with a hostname like myserver.mycompany.com and option 3 (internet access), as I want to use it for email at a later stage. All services are working fine (except VPN). DNS is active, but basically it only contains the adress myserver.mycompany.com and forwards everything else to our router.
I changed the DNS settings of our domain ( hosted by an ISP - so not in the local DNS ! ). I created a subdomain vpn.mycompany.com which points to the static IP of our router.
In the router I opened the UDP ports 500, 1701 and 4500, and for 1701 i made the same thing for TCP (I found this in a forum, but I think this is not necessary?), the ports are pointing to the ip of the os x server.
In OS X Server I started VPN for L2TP using the vpn.mycompany.com hostname, and a shared secret.
When I try to connect with I client from outside I try to connect using L2TP via vpn.mycompany.com using the shared secred and user-id and password. The user-id is created in OS X Mountain Lion server and is configured to use VPN service. When trying to connect I get the error message "L2TP-VPN server is not repsonding...".
In the log file of the server I see some entries for each connect:
    Oct 10 20:21:45 myserver.mycompany.com racoon[13873]: Connecting.
    Oct 10 20:21:45 myserver.mycompany.com racoon[13873]: IPSec Phase1 started (Initiated by peer).

    Oct 10 20:22:06 myserver.mycompany.com racoon[13873]: IKE Packet: transmit success. (Phase1 Retransmit).
No more entries in log file now. Anyone any ideas what's going wrong. Might there be a problem as I use another servername outside as inside (vpn... instead of myserver...)?
    Thanks!

Solved, first of all we tested to establish the VPN connection locally by adding the ip address of the server to /etc/hosts for vpn.mycompany.com. The VPN connected without problems then, so it was clear that it is a firewall/router problem, and not a server problem.
After that we studied some more documentations and found that we don't have to open port 50, but ip protocoll 50 (ESP) on the firewall. After that was done, the connection was working from the internet as well.

  • Mountain Lion download issues

I completed the purchase in the app store, but I cannot get Mountain Lion to even begin downloading.   any thoughts?

I'm having trouble as well. It took all evening for ML to download in the App Store. Then I had a window pop-up that seemed to be the beginning of installation - I agreed to the terms, it selected my HD - but then it just disappeared. Nothing. I have tried clicking on the App Store download button and I keep getting this error message:
"You have updates available for other accounts. To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it"
That is the account I used to purchase it. Something isn't right.
    UPDATE:
I thought restarting might help. Wrong! It wiped out the download I had and has restarted the whole thing all over again!
