  • Looking for grey desktop wall paper at the start of MacBook Pro  OSX Lion

    Hey guys,
I really like the grey wall paper with light texture... the one when you start up MacBook Pro OS Lion and you log in. I'm wondering if anyone know where the file is hiding in computer or anywhere on web to download? I wanna set it as my desktop. It's really easy on the eyes and really clean look.
    Thanks,

I'm going to back up to Firefox 7 next. I'm getting the drift that 8.0.1 and/or flash on 8.0.1 are unstable.
I'll let you know if that solves this problem.
    NOPE. This had no effect.

lion, system preferences freezes when I tried to change wall paper, how do I fix this?

Quit System Preferences if it's running. In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
    Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following item, if it exists:
    Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
and move the following item to the Desktop:
    Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Launch System Preferences and test. If you still have the issue, put the item on the Desktop back where it came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the item.

No third party applications installed; no gestures changed. It just starts acting up like I described a few times a day. I'll be browsing the internet and go to switch desktops and it suddenly doesn't work.

  • Mountain lion: the world's most expensive paper weight?

So I boot my mac book pro (bought March this year) and everything works fine... but bnce I close the lid, everything starts to go wrong... sometimes I can log back in again, sometimes it just sits there at the login screen with that annoying spinning cursor.. and the only thing I can do is hold down the power button. If I can manage to log in, it might works for about 10 seconds.. then everything stops responding.. The background image will flash between a gray background and my background image.. sometimes I will be left with firefox open, and the menus at the top and bottom with disappear.. only thing I can do is hold down power button.. and everything will work fine again, until I close lid again (or mac goes to sleep)
I am so furstrated with my mac right now..  am tempted to just do a fresh install, but I was happy with how my mac was running before I made the huge mistake of upgrading to mountain lion..

You must be joking, right? You're saying Apple should test every configuration possible with the thousands of 3rd party devices before releasing on OS? You clearly have no grasp on reality. It's up to the 3rd party manufacturers to provide support for their devices with hardware and operating systems. Apple provides seeds of their OS's for this purpose, so the burden is on them, and quite frankly, on those who modify their systems beyond factory specs. I've been "playing" with various SSDs for the past 6 months, and it's very much the "wild wild west" out there right now - almost like a throwback to the good ole days of Windows 3.11/95 which had driver issues galore. I'm hoping the SSD manufactures get their acts together and make these things more user-friendly. Apple is known for carefully choosing their components to make for the best possible user experience. When folks start monkeying with this formula, all bets are off.

  • The wall paper can't change, all the time it's the same

I have  a Mac with Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.4. I have a problem with the wall paper, if I change the wallpaper,  when the system restarts reappears the same all the time.
I can tried to delete the file com.apple.desktop.plist but the problem persist.

Triple click and copy paste each line below one at a time into Terminal and press enter after each line, some might say "doesn't exist" don't worry.
Do not type the entries, you might make a fatal typo. rm is very dangerous. Have a backup of your files off the machine.
    rmdir Library/Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
    rm Library/Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
    rm Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Then Apple menu > Restart, open System Preferences and set your preferences.
If you still having problems, try other wallpapers from Apple only and test,
Then also run through this list of fixes and tests, there is something further wrong with your machines software.

  • How do I install Mountain Lion on an accidentally erased drive?

Honestly, I feel such a fool...
My new MBA arrived and I tried to migrate from my old one via wifi.  It stalled, so I decided to migrate from the most recent TimeMachine backup on an external Thunderbolt disk.  That finished, but the new MBA looked nothing like the old MBA and apps did not work the same, so I decided to go back to square one...
...which ended up with me having reformatted the internal SSD in the new MBA and unable to put OS X back on it any way at all.  When I boot the mac, I get the no-entry/prohibited sign.  If I press Option when booting and try to boot from a startup USB drive, or a Thunderbolt drive, or anything, I just get the no-entry sign.
I also tried Internet Recovery (Command Option R) which took 25 minutes to go through the initial stages, then presented me with the Startup Manager so I selected Reinstall OS X and it told me it would check with Apple's Servers to see whether I was allowed, but it then said it could not do this and put me back to the Startup Manager with no particular place to go other than Apple's own website.  Sigh.
This is two days of frustration.  I am not near an Apple Store, so cannot vent my frustration - not to mention humiliation - on anyone "real".
I have a brand new, apparently bricked, MBA.  I have my old, still functioning, MBA.  I have a 1Tb Thunderbolt disk which is partially used, a 500Gb USB disk which is partially used and a USB multireader with assorted SD cards etc.  What can I do?  Stop bashing my head against the wall would be a start, I suppose.
PS - I have tried using Target Disk Mode via the Thunderbolt cable to reformat and install OS X to the SSD, having googled a lot (too much!) but have achieved nothing.  It seems as though the new MBA, because it shipped with Mountain Lion preloaded, refuses to acknowledge any attempt to install it externally/remotely.  Do I have no option but to return it to Apple?
    Thank you!

Well, I opened the case again with Apple and this time they did call.  A very helpful chap called Gerry has set up an appointment for me at an Apple Store tomorrow.  The drive will be worth it, I'm sure.
The Internet Recovery process probably failed because OS X is too big to download via 3G and the nearest wifi I can connect to uses WPA encryption and Internet Recovery can only handle WEP, or vice versa I'm not sure.
With the new MBA I had got as far as registering it to my Apple ID and setting up messaging, App Store, FaceTime and all those other things that need the ID, so it should have been recognised as being mine and legitimate.
Anyway, thank you for the support - I hope nobody else tears as much of their hair out as I have over this.  A little knowledge is a dangerous thing...

  • How do I print black and white on Mountain Lion?

    Hey.
Does anyone know how to print black and white on Mountain Lion?
I searched the community and Google but I couldn't find anything...
    Regards,

It's usually in the Print dialog when you File > Print.  Select the Show details button, the change the option in the horizontal line to Paper Type/Quality.  Click the Color Options triangle and change Color to Greyscale.

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8.2, I cannot print to my Samsung laser printer ML 2525w?  How can I get this set up to print?

After upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 on my iMac, I cannot print to my Samsung B&W Laser printer ML 2525W either by USB or wireless.    Any help on how to setup or reconfigure would be apprecaited.
I either print blank pages or prints one time then goes off line, or spits out a bunch of blank paper, etc.  Have gone through all the standard fixes, reboot, reset , reload driver, etc.

From the link to the Thread you provided, I worked through the one message procedures that were listed.
For ease of reference, I have copied them and printed them below.  This was an old thread but the guidance still works with no firmware upgrade required.
I would stress that you MUST delete any and all files relating to USB connection of the printer to the MAC, including all print drivers (from both Apple and Samsung either from CD or web downloads) and all print queues, etc.  I was only able to get the printer to properly hand shake with my Mac by setting it up wirelessly after all old files were deleted with hard power off reboots on both the Mac and Printer.
I hope that someone from Apple will pass this note along to their programing department because there is some type of incompatibility in the new ML OS and the Samsung ML2525w print dirvers used for a cable (USB) type connection.  Apple needs to be talking to Samsung to get the USB issue resolved.  I am going to post this same message on the Samsung site to see if someone from there will contact Apple to work together on a final solution for USB connectivity.
Here is the steps I followed to get my ML2525w to work in the wireless mode.  Again, I cannot stress the need to clean out all the old files (drivers, print queues, etc. - everything) before setting up wirelessly.
As a note, I ran this printer with Lion for almost 2 years and it always worked fine (both wireless and USB).  From other comments on the thread, users were good with this printer using Lep. and Snow Lep also. - - no issues from either a USB connection or wireless until Mountain Lion.
Before the fix, I was experiencing many of the same issues as described on user chat threads, printer going offline after a print job.  1st page sometimes printing but all the rest of the pages were garbage.  No printing at all. Printer just running a bunch of blank pages out. etc.
I run an iMAC 27" desktop with the ML OS upgrade just installed from Lion.
"I've just installed one of these printers for my parents.
First of all, don't waste your time connecting the ML-2525W as a USB printer. The printer will go offline after each print job. It's hopeless, at least (I assume) until Samsung gets around to publicly releasing a firmware update.
Instead, you have to use the ML-2525W as a wireless printer. In that mode, it works fine.
    This is what I did:
    (1) First, if you have already attempted to install the Samsung driver software from the included CD-ROM, uninstall it. Get the uninstaller from the Samsung support site:
    http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/ML-2525W
Download the "Printer Driver (ver. 4.0)" ZIP file. It unzips to a folder that contains the uninstaller. Likewise, download the "Smart Panel Driver" ZIP file and uninstall the Smart Panel software.
    (2) Disconnect the USB cable from the printer, if it is connected. Pull the power plug on the printer and power cycle it.
    (3) Restart your Mac.
    (4) Go to the "Printer Driver (ver. 4.0)" folder that you previously unzipped. Inside it is a folder named "WirelessSetting". Open the folder and run the "Wireless Setting.app".
    (5) The application will ask you to connect the USB cable to the printer. Do so, and the Mac should be able to communicate with the printer to perform the wireless setup.
    (6) The application will show you a list of wireless networks. One of them is the wireless interface in the printer (ad-hoc). You can ignore that unless you intend to use the printer without connecting to another wireless network. In my case, I selected the wireless network in my parents' home (infrastructure) and entered the security passphrase. The application then configured the wireless interface in the ML-2525W to connect to the home network.
    (7) The Wireless Setting application will then tell you to disconnect the USB cable.
    (8) After finishing the Wireless Setting application, go to Word, Textedit, Pages, or Safari, and select a file or page to print. In the print dialog window, you should see the ML-2525W as a "Nearby Printer" (i.e. via Bonjour). Select the ML-2525W, and your Mac will automatically connect to Apple's Software Update and download the latest Samsung driver. If for any reason the Software Update download does not succeed, you can manually download and install the Apple driver using the previously published link in this discussion.
    (9) After that, you should be able to print to the ML-2525W whenever you want, without the printer going offline.
    (10) If you have a USB printer queue still in your Print & Fax Preferences (from your previous unsuccessful attempt to connect via USB), you can delete it. You only need to keep the Bonjour queue.
Obviously YMMV, but in my case this procedure got the printer working reliably without the need for a firmware update."

  • Mountain lion - wake from sleep - destroys hdd

I upgraded my macbook pro mid 2009 model to mountain lion.
First crash - left my computer for 3 hrs playing music using iTunes. Hdd went to sleep, screen is sleeping as well. I moved my mouse and everything froze. Music stopped. Waited for a minute. Nothing happened. I forced shutdown by holding power button for 5 seconds. Reboot failed because hdd can no longer be detected. (Gray folder with question mark) Not even by the install disk.
I brought it to the service center and they replaced my hdd after i approved it. It works ok then. Reinstalled mountain lion and all my stuff.
Second crash - i left my computer for an hour playing music through Grooveshark. Screen and hdd went to sleep while music still played ok. I moved the mouse to wake from sleep but the screen remained black. I can see the cursor not moving but the music was still playing. I put down the lid and waited for a few seconds before turning it on. Screen was still black except for mouse. Music stopped when i closed the lid. I forced shutdown by holding the power button for 5 seconds. Reboot failed because the hdd cannot be detected. (Gray folderneith question mark) Not even by the install disk.
I'm going to the repair center tomorrow and have it checked again. It's only been a week since i got back from the repair center...
So i was reading about the issues with mountain lion waking from sleep where the hdd has slept as well. But it seems that their hdds were intact and they were able to reboot. Mine however, has left my hdd as a heavy paper weight.
2 things, how do I repair the hdds and use them again? Is the issue caused by waking from sleep with the hdd sleeping as well?
Note that in both occurrences, my mbp was plugged in.
Or is it possible that the 2009 model just can't handle mountain lion?
I'm thinking of using ubuntu to force mount my 2 broken hdds and hopefully recover some of my data though all my important files and documents are in sugarsync and dropbox. (Thank God for online storage!) though this is quite detrimental to teaching...

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • Is apple giving money back if you have Mountain Lion uninstalled?

    Hi everyone,
My main question is if Apple will give me my money back for Mountain Lion and iPhoto11 if I have them uninstall them? I know it's only $35 total, but I am not paying them my hard earned money for a program that has ruined my computer and makes me not want to even use it.
Also, is the correctional update going to be free for people who already purchased Mountain Lion when they release it? Does anyone know when they plan to release it?
Thanks for reading and/or responding, in advance!
Here is the rather long complaint I registered with Apple if you are interested:
    "Good day,
After downloading Mountain Lion (I will call it ML) and iPhoto11 2 days ago, I am experiencing non-stop problems on a 2010 macbook pro that I have NEVER had issues with. I downloaded ML initially after seeing in multiple locations that Apple was advertising speak-to-type app that allows you to do type papers/do homework simply by taking into your computer... Yea, they forgot to mention the app only lets you talk for 30 seconds and gets more than half of my words wrong. WHAT KIND OF PAPER CAN I WRITE IN 30 SECONDS?! False advertisement.
Anyhow, here is the list of my other issues:
    - Photostream/iCloud for my pictures has stopped working after about 24 hours of doing fine.
    - My "All Notes" list is not in sync with what comes up on my notepad. I click on one title and it pulls up a completely different note. This works fine on my phone though.
    - Notes are not saving what I write on my phone; is only saving what gets typed in from my computer.
    - Notes is sending 2 copies of some notes to my phone. If I delete the second copy, it comes right back when I refresh Notes.
    - Anything that I open that has iCloud gives me a message saying whether I want to allow access to "imap.gmail.com." It gives me the options: always allow, allow and deny. No matter which I click this message continuously pops up on my screen, not accepting my entry. It won't go away.
    - My email makes me retype my password when I open it, but only about 1/3 of the time. Sometimes it accepts my password and sometimes it does not. I am entering the same exact password...
    - I set up my emails to appear in order by date. This does not save.
    - My internet kept failing when I first installed ML. It hasn't failed recently but it is slow.
    - Apps are loading very slow. The App Store will only load sometimes, and is very slow when it does decide to.
    - My battery is draining much faster than it did with Snow Leopard (SL) and is also draining much faster than it says it will when I hover the icon. Right now it is at 29% and says 2 hours 5 minutes remaining. Eight minutes about it was at 36 percent and said over 3 hours remaining. Clearing not true.
Also, here is a list of things that are confusing and I have not been able to find an answer to on the forums:
    - How do I view only one account on my email, so that I am able to see all of the folders under that account that I created?
    - How can I organize my documents into folders?
    - Why are the folders and documents I had in SL not appearing when I click on documents in finder?
    - In finder, where it lists documents, applications, desktop, airdrop, ect. I used to have one called "katielubinski" (my name) on SL. That is where I stored all of my document folders and now on ML it is no longer there and I am unable to find my documents. What happened/what do I do instead?
Hence all of that, I want it uninstalled if you cannot fix ALL of these problems and I want my money back. I also want iPhoto11 uninstalled considering I only purchased it because it's the only version that works with iCloud... which has stopped working for my pictures and therefore makes iPhoto11 useless for me. I liked iPhoto09 better and didn't even want to "upgrade" from it. I don't like the new changes at all. Also, I expect that the correctional update you all are issuing is going to be free for those of us who have already purchases Mountain Lion? It better be.
I know it's not just me thanks to all the articles on the internet I have read. I also posted on facebook about this and had a non stop stream of messages and comments about issues my friends are facing... we all seem to have a unique variety. Hopefully that doesn't mean more problems are to come. I have talked to two people who said its working fine. Two out of eleven that I have spoke to... Good job, Apple.
    Sincerely,
    My Name"
So, yea... that's it. Haven't heard back from an actual human being, of course, so I plan on calling Apple Support today and also have an appointment at the Apple store about an hour away from me incase they can't help with everything over the phone. Wish me luck!

    Good luck!
While the majority of users are not seeing any major issues there are always a significant minority who run into problems.
Question is why?  Is it something to do with software/system configuration prior to upgrading, the process going wrong or Mountain Lion bugs.
Now there are inevitably bugs in all software  - the question is why are onlt some peopel affected.
Your real problem is that you can't simply downgrade to Lion or Snow Leopard without wiping your existing system.
Apple have refunded some users who have not been happy with certain aspects but I think they would be handling this on a case by case basis.
Personally, if in your situation I would ensure I had all my data backed up, reinstall the shipping OS, update it to current version and then try to install Mountain Lion again.
When computers play up sorting things like this out is a real chore.

  • How do I ensure bootcamp partition works after upgrading snow leopard to mountain lion

I am very apprehensive about upgrading to Mountain Lion due to performance concerns and the debacle with the new Auto Save feature which seems like a very poor and confusing solution to a problem that didn't really exist. I am only considering the upgrade, so that I can get the latest version of Xcode - 4.3; for some reason, 4.2 for SL is no longer available and my current 4.0 version is no longer supported, so I feel forced to upgrade to ML. Also, I have a bootcamp partition that I need to be able to use without issues after having upgraded to ML. So the essence of my question is this: what steps do I need to take prior to upgrading to ML to ensure that my Bootcamp partition is left intact and bootable. I have already created a compressed backup disk image and stored on a separate external hard disk for precautionary reasons. Is there anything else I should know beore going ahead with the upgrade?
    Thanks.

Auto Save is actually a very useful feature. If you are typing a paper in Pages and you haven't saved in a long time, and then your battery dies suddenly, your paper is saved. Before Auto Save, you would have lost all your progress.
Your BootCamp partition will not even be touched during the install of Mountain Lion. As long as you make sure to select your Mac OS partition during setup, nothing will happen to your Windows side and everything will still work fine.

  • How do I disable my dvd optical drive on my MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion)?

    Hey,
I have dvd stuck in my optical drive and it keeps on making a noise-non stop. I've tried everything to remove it, ATM cards, rebooting whilst holding mouse key and eject botton, terminal command etc etc.-nothing works! I'm stuck in North Africa with no Apple services available anywhere close by.
I don't really use the dvd drive that much anyway so I would like to just disable my dvd optical drive all together. I saw that it is possible on Snow Leopard and Lion but the option to go to /Library/Extensions and removing (IODVDStorageFamily.kext) and removing it is not available on Mountain Lion.
    Help please!

Light source. Straightened paper-clip. Insert straight (no wiggling around) to find the mechanical eject hole on the edge of the DVD drive.
Hold the MBP trackpad down during a cold reboot. I know you said you used a mouse like this.
    In Terminal, type drutil eject
Try ejecting the DVD with the MBP flipped upside down. Sometimes all you need is gravity. If the credit card didn't pry it up off the drive spindle, maybe this will.
Because of your location, you may not have the tools to take the MBP apart and remove the DVD drive.
