Mountain Lion weird DNS issue

Hello,
having a weird issue with my DNS.  i have a machine running mountain lion with osx server.  Whenever i log into one of the laptops (also running mountain lion), and i try to ping the server, the machine resolves to the external IP of the server.  if i flush dns, it resolves to the internal IP.  If I logout or reboot, it goes back to pointing to the external IP.  i've done no modifications to the /etc/hosts.  this has me stumped.  here is what it looks like (i changed the names and ips):
rmbp15:~ admin$ ping server
PING mydomain.com (70.70.70.70): 56 data bytes
Request timeout for icmp_seq 0
Request timeout for icmp_seq 1
^C
--- mydomain.com ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100.0% packet loss
rmbp15:~ admin$ sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
Password:
rmbp15:~ admin$ ping server
PING server.mydomain.com (10.10.10.10): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 10.10.10.10: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=1.209 ms
64 bytes from 10.10.10.10: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=1.237 ms
64 bytes from 10.10.10.10: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=5.686 ms
^C
--- server.mydomain.com ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 3 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 1.209/2.711/5.686/2.104 ms
This happens every time, so hosts cant connect to the server internally...  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks!

I'm not as familiar with OS X server as Windows server but it sounds like there might be a DNS record for your external IP in the DNS configuration... I would look for it in the Server Admin GUI and remove it if it exists..  then flush the DNS cache on the server.
I would also check the laptop's network configuration under ADVANCED... see what is in the DNS records for the connection you are using. Delete the external DNS record if there is one and make sure your internal DNS record is showing up there.

  • Lion server/Mountain Lion client connection issue

I am trying to set up our work Lion Server to use open directory. The DNS settings are fine on the server side but the Mountain Lion clients cannot bind to the server. We are hoping to get a static IP soon so the directors can access the network remotely but I want to get this cracked before I take that step.
The server was set up normally as far as I'm aware (I didn't set it up).
I'm wondering if I upgrade the server to Mountain Lion if that will help, it seems as though open directory is easier to manage wit ML. Would I need to reinstall server and start from scratch?
Any help much appreciated, excuse my ignorance I am a bit of a novice but do have some experience.

After force Quit the option Notes is not marked in the new configured Profile. I check it in a new VM and fresh clean install and have the same problem.
If is it not marked, the Sync not with the Server and save only localy.
Have you check it with an other Mac or Device too?

  • Is possible to re-install Mountain Lion after Mavericks issues?

My mac became vary unstable after upgrade. Tech support was helpful but there is more issues now then before. They had me safe mode to check any programs that cause boot failure, safe reair and then reinstall new operating system. Now when it boots Finder goes on a tangent. Keeps asking about do you want to quit last program. All programs that are on the Mac came from the App store. The Mac is 2012 model that ran flawless until upgrade. If I revert to Mountain Lion, will I loose anything that was install earlier? And one other thing, I Cloud wants to be involved in everthing.

To completely restore your system from a Time Machine backup boot OS X Recovery by holding the ⌘ and r keys (two fingers) while you start your Mac.
Once the Mac OS X Utilities screen appears, select Restore from Time Machine Backup.
Select the TM backup of your Mountain Lion system prior to upgrading - their backup dates and OS X versions will appear, so you will be looking for the most recent backup of your system when it was running OS X version 10.8.5.
When it completes, your Mac will restart and your previous system state will have been restored.

  • Mountain Lion Upgrade causing issues due to hard drive fault

I have a question about Mountain Lion crashing your hard drive. I upgraded my Macbook Pro 13' several weeks ago afer the release of Mountain Lion. The download took sometime before it completed it's download and completed without incident. Since that time I've had no issues with the softward update, my hard drive or computer.
However yesterday evening I went to use my computer and the screen after the Apple logo disappeared showed a circle w/a line thru it and turning gears just below it. After reading several forums and posts it seems that the computer cannot find a bootable disk to load up from. I do not understand this as I not changed the HD and the computer was working fine just the day before.
I tried to do a reinstall of the original OSX system (snow leopard) - it did download but after the computer re-started the system went back to the same screen w/the circle and line thru it. I then restarted computed hitting options to take me into the recovery / disk utility. From their I tried to verify and repair the HD - still same problem (circle w/line), I then just tried to reinstall Mountain Lion (same results).
WTH is going on - this was a perfectly good computer working fine & now I cannot get it to boot up or run at all? Could this be a software issue due to Mountain Lion or simply a bad HD? Any advice on how best to correct this issue would be appreciated. I use my laptop for dj'ing and have an upcoming gig in 2 weeks. HELP...

  • OSX Mountain Lion install / download issue. Help Please!

I have attempted to download OSX ML 3 times now, each time the download completes, install runs then after restart there is no change. ML hasn't been installed. Anyone had the same issue? Any fix?

The next time you download Mountain Lion, make a copy and move it out of your Applications folder. That will save downloading it again.
What version of the OS are you currently running? If it is 10.7 try the below:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/21111661#21111661
If you look in your Applications Folder is the installer still there?
If you hold down the option/alt ket during a restart, do you see a recovery volume?
Are you getting any error messages?
Try booting into the Safe Mode to install it.
Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Mountain Lion not compatible issue

Hi, i m using macbook pro with retina display 13'. Previously i successfully installed windows 7 using bootcamp. N now i plan on restoring everything to normal, as good as new. I tried command + r and go to disk utility where i erase the original partition which leave me with only the main drive and the so called base drive (around 1gb; which is unable to erase). Then i install the mac os x mountain lion. After successfully installed, the version is default 10.8.1 and i plan on upgrading to 10.8.2, but i was unable to do so. In apps store, it shows no update. When i try to purchase the mac os, it write not compatible. And i download the dmg file from apple aupport and is not able to install to due to the message unable to install on the drive itself through out the installation process. Anyone can help enlighten me?thanks

    Couple of issues.
You should have used Bootcamp to remove the original Bootcamp partition.
I believe I read elsewhere in the community that Apple has temporarily blocked 10.8.2 from purchase or upgrade. This may last until 10.8.3 is released (no date).
You will have to continue using 10.8.1 until item 2 above is resolved.

  • Mountain Lion Notification center issue

I installed mountain Lion in a late 2008 imac. Everything runs smoothly except notification center. i already enabled banners and the other options from notifications settings, but when i receive a message through imessage, no banner is shown, just a badge on the application icon (in dock). Same issue when I receive a new email, application icon is badged but no banner is shown and i cannot see the email (or text from imessage) in totification center.

I have read in other posts that if you send  an email to yourself, it doesn't show up in notification center. So this is what i was doing so far. So the email issue is solved, as I received emails which are now in the notification center and I was notified by a banner in the top left corner of my iMac. The iMessage isuue remains though  as I received many messages from friends and no notification banner poped (Although the message exists in NC.

  • Mountain Lion .otf font issue

    Hello,
Some of the fonts that I have uploaded onto my mac are not responding properly - mainly the system is not recognising the postscript name and therefore the whole family of a font does not show up in the Adobe Suite.
For Example - if I upload Gotham Family, the files look like this: gotham-medium.otf, gotham-thin.otf etc. Only some of the instences work for example Gotham Thin is available to use in adobe and shows up in my fontexplorer.  But the gotham-medium just indicates Gotham (no medium, conflicts with  gotham regular and doesn't show up in adobe).
I have gone in and looked at the name of the Gotham family font individully. The ones that don't work have ie: Full Name: Gotham, Name & Extension: Gotham-Medium. If they do work it looks like this: ie: Full Name: Gotham Thin, Name & Extension: Gotham-thin.
My Question is - How can fonts from the same suite react differently? How do I get the ones with the Family Name as Gotham to be known by their postscript extension name?
I've googled my heart out and even tried to just upload them to fontbook with the same issue. Also tried placing in Libray/font folder.
    Thank you
    Mountain Lion 10.8.5
    Fontexplorer x Pro 4

First thought. Is Font Book still on your Mac? If it is, get rid of it. You should never have more than one font manager on your system at a time.
    1) The OS will tell you it can't delete Font Book if you try to trash it. Ignore the dire warning that it's indispensable. It's not. Highlight Font Book and press Command+I, or choose Get Info from the the top menu bar. Click on the lock at the lower right of the Get Info dialog box and enter your Administrator password. Expand the Sharing & Permissions heading if necessary. There are three permissions states, the first of which is already Read & Write. Change the other two, which are currently Read only, to Read & Write. Close the Get Info box. You can now move Font Book to the trash with no interference from the OS.
    2) Next, you need to remove Font Book's database, which will continue to interfere with your preferred font manager even though the app itself is gone.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup chime to boot into Safe Mode. Keep holding the Shift key until you see a progress bar towards the bottom of the screen. You can let go of the Shift key at that point.
OS X asks you to log in (you will get this screen on a Safe Mode boot even if your Mac is set to automatically log in). Let the Mac finish booting to the desktop and then restart normally. This will clear Font Book's database and the cache files of the user account you logged into in Safe Mode.
    3) Lastly, clear all font cache data. Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
    sudo atsutil databases -remove
Terminal will then ask for your admin password. As you type, it will not show anything, so be sure to enter it correctly.
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and the current user font cache files. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.
Do note that these steps may not solve any issues with the fonts themselves, but it will remove any possible head butting between different font managers.

  • Outlook 2011 and mountain lion calendar sync issues... resolved (kinda)

Okay... I never really post to these boards, but I'm fairly ticked off that OS X keeps tampering with MS Office and it's syncing with iTunes and, ultimately, my iPhone.  Apple support tried to push me onto the iCloud, but I'm not going to use that crappy feature. After many hours of trying to fix the calendar sync issue with MS Office 2011, I found a workaround:
    1.  Get the apple reminders set up to recognize the OS X Calendar program.
    2.  Confirm that your Outlook calendar data is recognized in the OS X Calendar program (it was always there for me)
    3.  Install MS Office 2008 (Entourage) --- You don't have to use it, but the older program still syncs with Mountain Lion.
    4.  Sync your iphone with itunes and ensure that your Calendars are erased (uncheck the Calendar sync box).
    5.  Click on the "Replace Information on this iPhone) for Calendars.
    6.  Re-sync the iPhone with iTunes.
    7.  The data should go up with no problem.
IF you are still having problems...
    1.  go to OS X "Calendar" and Add a new calendar called "Home".
    2.  move the Outlook data to the Home calendar (just drag and drop).
    3.  Repeat steps 4-7 above.
Since I've done these changes, everything directly syncs.
Hope this helps, and don't lose faith.  MS will come up with some type of patch.

Outlook 2011 is not compatible with iCloud, it won't work and your 'workaround' may affect iCloud clients on the same account.
    Don't use 2011.

  • Mac OS X Mountain Lion Boot Drive Issues

    Dear Apple Users,
This is my first post here on the Apple Support Communities, so kindly forgive me if I'm repeating a previously asked question.
I'd like to create a Mac OS X Mountain Lion USB Boot Drive and of course I already have it installed on my MBP.
My question is whether I need to buy the App from the App Store if I already have it installed on my MBP[in order to create the USB Boot Drive, I need .dmg ]? On App Store, price tag is still appearing, that's why I'm asking.
Thanks in advance for all your help

If you purchased OS X Mountain Lion to upgrade your computer, open App Store > Purchases, and download OS X Mountain Lion. When the download finishes, use Lion Diskmaker to create a bootable Mountain Lion drive > http://liondiskmaker.com
If your Mac came with OS X Mountain Lion, you may not be able to make a bootable Mountain Lion drive until Apple launches a OS X update. That's because your Mac may be using a special OS X version that you can't get from the App Store, so you can only download it starting in OS X Recovery, and you won't be able to create an external drive with Mountain Lion

  • OS X Mountain Lion and Photobooth issue:

Once I installed the OS X Mountain Lion, the video and sound in Photobooth are not in sync.  How can I fix this????

I'm having the same problem, my videos won't play through photo booth, it just shows a black thumbnail. they play through other players, though. In my other macbook, which was running Lion, i haven't had this problem. But now with Mountain Lion, it began to happen. Also, video and audio are not in sync. Is there any solution?
    I use OSX 10.8.2
And photo booth version is 5.0.1

  • OS X Mountain Lion Battery Life Issue

I bought a new MacBook Air 13" about a month ago. It has 4GB Memory, Intel Core i5 processor, and a 256GB SSD. The first three weeks I had it (before OS X Mountain Lion was released) it was running OS X Lion and was giving me about 9hrs (using just iTunes, Safari, Calender, and Messages). After I upgraded it to Mountain Lion the battery dropped to about 5-6hrs (using the same apps). Why is this? And is there going to be an update or something that can fix this?

    Try the following:
    a) Turn off "Enable LAN syncing" (dropbox preferences)
    reboot
check if dropbox is back to normal
    if not,
    b) completely deinstall dropbox (no need to delete your data files, of course)
    e.g. http://www.ehow.com/how_8242148_remove-dropbox-mac.html
download the latest stable build of dropbox, currently 1.4.12
install when you start dropbox, make sure Enable LAN syncing is turned off
    Hope this helps!

  • Clean install of Mountain Lion and permissions issue

I'm doing a clean install of Mountain Lion and after the initial install I noticed that all of my disk volumes (and their contents) showed the owner as "Fetching...." (though I still had access because the "staff" group has read/write access.
Doing a search, I learned that this means that the new system doesn't recognize the user id (UID) of these files/folders.
I know why. In my old system, I set up a second administrative user when I was troubleshooting a Snow Leopard problem, and just started using the new user (and eventually deleted the troublesome one).
So, the UID for my Snow Leopard user (which created all these files and folders on my other volumes, including my Time Machine volume) has UID = 502.  The new ML user I set up has UID = 501.  That's why when booted into ML all the owners are "Fetching..."
The question is how to fix this.  I see three options:
    1.  Don't worry about it, as I have access.  But I have read that having the OS constantly trying to figure out the owner of files can be a drag on system speed
    2.  Use chown to change all the ownership of all my files on the various volumes
    3.  Set up a new administrative user on ML (that will presumably have UID=502) and delete the other user (with UID = 501)
[And yes, I did try repairing permissions with Disk Utility, but that doesn't affect volumes other than the boot volume, of course]
    Thanks to all.

    @macjack...
Thanks for your response.  I did exactly what you suggested when I set things up.  I installed ML, rebooted, and it of course booted into Setup Assistant.  I used SA to migrate.  The permissions in the User directory and the boot volume were just fine.  It's the other volumes (Time Machine, data volumes, backup volumes, etc.) that have the owner showing "Fetching...."  and that's because when I installed ML, the first user setup was assigned UID = 501 while all these files/folders were created by a (Snow Leopard) user with UID = 502.
