Mountain lion will not install - messages says the hard drive is for time machine
basically i have gone thru the install process
I get to screen that asks which drive to install
I have 3 drives that show up
Mac-ssd
bootcamp
mac storage drive
it will not let me pick any drive(have not tried bootcamp)
it says that this drive is being used by time machine
lesnorvell
Your Mac has a directory named Backups.backupdb located on it. If you have good time machine backups somewhere else, you can delete the directory and ML will allow you to select the drive.

Mountain Lion will not install says HD is time machine back up but it isn't

for time machine back up.
I have OS 10.6.8 which a I read the information should be what is required to intall ML.
How can I get the program to recognize that my HD is not the back up disk?OS X- Cannot install on a volume used by Time Machine for backups

I have downloaded Mountain Lion but it will not allow me to install because the time machine uses the hard drive to back up. How do I solve this problem?
Unless you are trying to install on an external hard drive that actually has been used for Time Machine backups, this is usually caused by having a folder named "Backups.backupd" on your hard drive somewhere. It may be at the root level of the hard drive, but may also be elsewhere. Try searching for it, and then delete it. (You shouldn't need it.)

Tried to upgrade from 10.7.4 on relatively new MBP. It appears that Mountain Lion successfully downloaded from App Store. However, ML will not install to the hard drive because "This disk cannot be used to startup your computer". Thanks for advice.
Try going through the steps described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3926.

S.M.A.R.T. error and Mountain Lion will not install
I downloaded Mountain Lion so I could use the iCloud with my iTunes for other devices and it says that there is a S.M.A.R.T. error on my hard drive and it cannot be installed. What can I do to fix this?
Hi, I too had the exact same thing happen. I called support on the phone and they suggested I bring my computer into the store. I took it in and the employee determined that the hard drive was failing and I was the third person that day with the same issue. Luckily, it is under warranty but they had to replace the hard drive. I still haven't gotten my computer back because they didn't have the parts. My advice - BACK UP NOW!

Mountain lion will not install on late 2010 Mac pro

I downloaded update for iTunes when the computer restarted it said I had perform a system restore. After restore a message says " The file "iTunes Libary.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. She I remove iTunes and reinstall it? Or can I perform the update from online? Thank you for your help!!
See Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash. This message may sometimes be caused by a corrupt library database rather than an outdated version of iTunes.

Can't install Lion on my HD. Says this disk is used for time machine backups
I just downloaded Lion to install on my 2008 macbook and i can't get past the window that asks me to select the disk where I want Lion installed. It says my hard disk is used for time machine backups. Any suggestions on how I can select my hd to install Lion?
ThanksThat means there is a directory on your HD called something like backups. backupdb
It thinks you're using the drive for TM. Delete this directory and it will then load.

Just picked up a 2T WD external HD for my new MBPro with 500 G drive. Looking to use part of the external drive for Time MAchine. Not sur if I should designate 1T of it or 750G. I'm running Lion. What's the best way to format the external drive. Disk Utility?
Thanks,
DennisAsk in Lion: TimeMachine / MacBook Pro even - this is workstation territory
I would not use the same drive for data and for backups.
If I had to, I'd make a partition large enough to boot your Mac from though, whether 50-500GB to clone your system.
You should still be able to use Lion's Recovery boot mode.
I don't think there really is much choice in what to format with, unless you want to spend over $100. -
HT201316 Mountain lion will not install and sends me to support/no-recovery
I can't load Mountain Lion since it doesn't support recovery any way around this glitch
Hi,
I had the same problem, unable to install Mountain Lion due to recovery problem. After a long investigation I found out that my Recovery HD partition was only 613.6MB and it should appearently be 650MB !
--- BEFORE ---
$ diskutil list
/dev/disk0
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: GUID_partition_scheme *120.0 GB disk0
1: EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1
2: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD 119.1 GB disk0s2
3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 613.6 MB disk0s3
What I did to solve this was to delete the Recovery HD partition using the following steps:
* In terminal window write the following: defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility DUDebugMenuEnabled 1
* Go to Disk Utility where you now should have debug menu. Select the option to show all paritions.
* Delete your Recovery HD partition.
* Make sure that you have at least 650MB free on your OSX drive. If not decrease the size of your OSX partition.
* Install Mountain Lion and it will then automatically create a new Recovery HD partition.
--- AFTER ---
$ diskutil list
/dev/disk0
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: GUID_partition_scheme *120.0 GB disk0
1: EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1
2: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD 118.9 GB disk0s2
3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB disk0s3
I hope this can be helpful to someone. -

Adobe CC will not install programs onto the selected drive.
I have 2 hard drives in my computer. I have low space on my boot drive so i'm attempting to install adobe cc premiere onto my 2tb storage drive. however whenever i attempt the install it wants to install onto the c:// drive. where i have no space. I have gone into the preferences of CC and changed the install location. but it still tries the c drive! this makes me a sad panda.
Any insight or suggestion are greatly appreciated. We can't know. You have not provided any proper system information. Based on your limited information and your use of "storage drive" terminology I would assume that this is a non-permanent, removable drive and those can't be used for software installs. Not only does Adobe not allow it, but this is a fundamental thing in Windows. If that's the case, then you're out of luck. Otherwise there could simply be issues with the drives configuration like a specific RAID/ SATA driver being required or all sorts of permissions issues....

Mavericks will not install on brand new Hard Drive
Trying to install Mavericks to a brand new internal 2TB Samsung SATA 3.0 HD on a 3-yr old 12 Core Mac Pro system that was running Mnt Lion just fine. After multiple failures upgrading the Mnt Lion disk to Mavericks. Decided to just use a brand spankin' new hard drive and do a clean install of Mavericks. Now during the install to the NEW DRIVE, getting error message "Mavericks cannot be installed." Then I reboot and try to force the continuation of the install, doing this repeatedly, and I sometimes get a error log instead of a just an error message. Error log says: Thread 34 Crashed:: Dispatch queue: com.apple.root.high-priority. Then the 1st line listed under that is: 0 libsystem_platform.dylib 0x000000010fa5a06a _platform_memmove$VARIANT$Nehalem + 138. If anybody knows what any of that means?
Thanks.Without the full listing of the trace I can't be sure, however it would look more like a bonafide logic board or memory error rather than the HD that's causing the problem. The low level drivers on Mavericks have obviously changed (otherwise it wouldn't be a different OS version) and possibly they're exposing a lack of performance in your memory. The actual Mavericks install may not be the problem, but rather being corrupted during installation. In the line you quoted, Nehalem is the Intel name for your CPU, the memmove operation failed (move blocks of memory contents from point A to point B) and they shared library containing this was in the system library....sort of critical stuff.
You could try the following:
Re-seat the RAM and try again.
Try an old OS installation and see if it succeeds (Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion, etc)
Try an install to an external enclosure
If re-seating the RAM does the trick, then you're set.
If it doesn't, then install an older OS to see if they work OK. If older OSes work OK using the internal drive and you have after market memory in the system, it would imply to me that the memory probably isn't quite up to snuff and Mavericks is exposing it. If it's original memory then it should be OK.
If the older OSes now don't install correctly and it's giving similar problems try doing the install in an external enclosure. The point here being to try to move your data path off the internal SATA cable. If these install OK, try it with Mavericks. If any of these work it could be the SATA cable or I/O controllers on the logic board (SATA cable most likely). A good reference for these sorts of problems is:
Bad Hard Drive Signs and Symptoms
Possibly a last option, which I would think (or hope) would be rare, would be that the binary for Mavericks install got corrupt during download. You could also try some of the resets they have in the linked document above. They might work and it doesn't take any effort.
Good Luck
