Mountain Lion won't boot

I downloaded Mountain Lion and started the install...the computer said it was going to restart but it's just sitting there with the gray start-up screen but no apple logo or anything.  Should i shut down the machine and start it back up or just wait?

Wait about 15 minutes, if nothing happens shut down. Disconnect any peripheral devices and restart.

  • Mountain Lion won't boot after restart (SSD problem?)

Hey, I just installed ML on my OCZ Octane SSD, everything went ok, finally the setup assistant requested reboot which is what I did. However, it got stuck while rebooting and now I can only see flashing question mark icon and ML won't boot at all. The only thing I can do is to boot up in safe mode. I guess that the problem is my SSD (indilinx controller) which ML can't handle (it ran on Lion just fine). Does anyone have the same experience? Any clue how to resolve this? Thank you.

I've confirmed with OCZ that there is a firmware issue with Mountain Lion and they are working on a fix as of July 31, 2012.
No word from them yet, other than the official statement.
I too had an issue with my Octane booting once after install, then never booting again. Had to to a TM restore, back on Lion till this is resolved. Kind of frustrating, but there must have been a low level system change that affected things.

  • 27" iMac Mountain Lion won't boot (Black screen) after switching to bootcamp

    Hi,
I've been running Windows 7 in Boot Camp on Mountain Lion on my 1 month old 27" iMac without any problems. Tonight after I switched the startup partition to be boot camp the machine won't boot. I get the startup sound and the disks spin up, but the system just sits there with a Black Screen. There is no disk activity other than them spinning up.
I've tried starting the machine while holding the option key and also command-r, but nothing is happening. I have the feeling that the bluetooth keyboard has not had the chance to connect to the system before it is hanging.
I tried inserting a Lion OS DVD, thinking that it would at least complain and give me an option to boot back in to Mountain Lion. You can hear the DVD spin up and then go idle.
Any suggestions on how I can recover the situation?
    Thanks in advance
    Mick

The RAM mismatch might be the problem fix that.
Also backup/data recover naturally, assume TimeMacine or bootable clone is corrupted and backup only files to a storage drive
    Most commonly used backup methods
Install OS X on a external drive and boot from it.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Use Disk Utility on the booted clone to Erase with middle selection (Zero) the ENTIRE internal hard drive
Use Carbon Copy Cloner to reverse clone the clone onto the internal, copies the Recovery HD too.
That should fix it, or else the drive or another hardware issue
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's

  • 2012 Mac Pro / Mountain Lion won't boot with ATI 5770

2012 12 Core mac pro. I've got 2 GPUs installed:
    - Quadro 4000 for mac
    - ATI 5770
The Quadro is so loud and annoying that I'd like to unplug it for general use. Then plug it in for DaVinci or Premiere use.
Problem is when I unplug (power) from the Quadro and reboot, system gives me the Apple logo and then automatically restarts. Over and over. This is with Mountain Lion.
I tried booting to a drive with 10.6 and it booted up fine.
I keep searching for driver updates or something but everywhere says it's included in OSX?
Is this problem happening because there are 2 GPUs installed? Even though one is unplugged? Like PCI lane conflict or something?
    Alex

I think you will need to remove it entirely, or plug the power back in. It does not seem to allow your Mac to work with a Bus connection, but no aux power.

  • Mountain lion won't boot after login

I cant get my mbp to boot after the login screen. I type in my password and get the apple logo and spinning grey thing. Ive tried safe mode and it doesnt even boot into it. I dont get the progress bar and it just goes to the apple logo with spinning wheel. I tried single user mode and get USB errors when any peripherals are plugged in. This has never happened to me before today. I also used bootcamp today and when I tried restarting back to my mac it was now doing this. I dont know if there's a connection there. I tried booting to recovery mode but that doesnt work either. Just same old grey screen with logo and wheel. Internet Recovery Mode did come up but didnt do anything. I have Lion on an external drive which I'm on now through Firewire 800 and that allows me to access my internal drive on my mbp and also repair it through disc utility. Having done that it still doesnt make a difference. Single user mode comes up with errors and wont let me run fsck. I'm definitely running out of options here and dont know what to do next. The picture below is what single user mode ends up coming to with nothing plugged into my computer.

Ended up doing a clean reinstall of ML and it works.

  • Mountain Lion won't boot after install Win 8 Professional via BootCamp 4.0

    Hello
    i have a big problem.
i have install Windows 8 Professional (via MSDNAA) via Boot Camp 4.0 on my MacBook Air 13" 2012 with Mac OS X 10.8.1.
Windows 8 Prof. running good on my Mac, but if i want boot in OS X my MacBook always boot in Windows 8.
If i start the Boot Camp System Control on Windows a error show to me, that i have no admin rights. Of Course my Account has admin rights.
If i click reboot in OS X it reboots always in Win 8 with no choice to change my system.
I have tried to hold shift, but nothing happens.
Pls pls help me, i want back to Mac OS :/

As you are booting, hold ALT/Option key, this will show you the bootable drives and you will be able to choose the OS you want.
Remember, Windows 8 is not offically out, and is unsupported by Apple and Microsoft at a End-User level. This means only developers and system administrator with direct MSDN support are suppose to be using Windows 8. When Windows 8 offically releases on October 26, i am sure Apple will update Boot Camp to fix any permission issues.
Watch out next time when jumping aboard unsupported OSes.

  • Mountain lion won't boot on MB Pro

I have a mid year 2012 MacBook Pro, about 14 months old.
Last night it froze up and would not reboot. I went into recovery partition, and ran disk utility which gave me hundreds of errors
(Invalid record count, invalid node structure, missing thread record I'd=.... , missing thread record, invalid directory item count, invalid node structure, next/previous I'd in a hard link chain is incorrect, orphaned file node, orphaned file hard link) and the message, disk utility can't repair this disk back up as many files as possible, reformat disk, restore backed up files ...
So... Help!! What should I do next, how can I back up (I have another mb pro) ?
Should I get disk warrior? Genius Bar??
    Thanks in advance.....

It appears that the HDD will have to be replaced.
If you have Apple care, then Apple should do it for free.  If not, you will have to do it and purchase a new one.
It would be best if you could attach a HDD in an enclosure and connect it to the MBP and transfer the data to the external one.  Note that third party application should also be transferred.
You could use Target Disk Mode with the other MBP:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10725
Note that this requires a Firewire cable.
You will need a new internal HDD.  Any SATA 2.5" HDD drive will do.  As a place to start, look at the options available at OWC:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
Newegg is another vendor you might look at.
Consider a HDD with larger capacity than what you are replacing and one with a faster rotation.  Also look at a hybrid SSHD for a bit more of a performance boost.  This way you make the best of a bad situation.
    The new HDD will have to be formatted and the OS will have to be installed using Internet Recovery;
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
Then you will have to install your user data.
    Ciao.

  • Mountain Lion won't install on 10.7.4. Suggestion from Apple is to completely erase harddisk and install Leopard Snow Leopard Mountain Lion. Is there no other way to install Mountain Lion

Mountain Lion won't install on 10.7.4. Suggestion from Apple is to completely erase the harddisk and install Leopard > Snow Leopard > Mountain Lion.
Is there no other way to install Mountain Lion?

I tried and failed for several hours to install Mountain Lion, and was repeatedly getting the "Recovery System" cannot be created error.  I tried all the tricks: resizing the drive partition, booting from an external boot drive, all to no avail.  After reading other users struggling with the same issue, I had determined it to be a boot camp drive error.  However, I didn't want to have to erase and begin anew when I came upon a possible solution.  I had long ago renamed my boot camp drive with a "." (".windows" for me) in order to avoid having the partition show up on my desktop.  So, I boot into windows and renamed the c: drive without the "." ("windows"), and reboot into os x.  The install then went off without a hitch.  I hope this will be helpful for others struggling with this issue that may have renamed their boot camp drives in a similar manner.

  • HT4245 my iMessage on my macbook pro mountain lion won't work.

this is a very frustrating problem
my iMessage on my macbook pro mountain lion won't work.
it keeps on saying that ive entered the wrong passcode.
i even have my firewall turned off
    plz help

    Ok...
So I bought my MacBook Pro second hand, and it came with no installation discs, but I got Mountain Lion and had it installed and decided to back it up to a disc in case of this scenario. I followed some instructions to make a bootable disc and used it to install a fresh copy of Mountain Lion back when I first got it.
My problem is that without the boot partition of my MacBook's hard drive it doesn't seem to want to boot the disc.
Since I didn't want to buy a disc and I don't have another MacBook or know anyone near me that does, I decided to download a hackintosh iso and use it along with my other laptop to install iPC 10.5.6....this installed successfully and my hopes were that my MacBook would be able to boot it, so I reinstalled my MacBook's hard drive and to my surprise it booted, although not normally. Since it is hackintosh it has some rewritten boot features so it's not a true OSX, but it is fully functional. Since I finally had OSX booted I figured I was in the clear and would be able to install Mountain Lion from this, but then I found out that you have to have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or later in order to install Mountain Lion.
Now I'm stuck with a hactintosh version of Lion and still no way to get back to Mountain Lion, is there anything I can do now that I have a functional OSX installation?

  • Cannot install Mountain Lion - my iPhoto won't quit and Mountain Lion won't let me do a force quit

I'm trying to upgrade to Mountain Lion but when it ries to quit all programmes to install my iPhoto won't quit as albums are being sync'd.  I try to stop and quit but it won't.  I then try to force a quit and Mountain Lion won't let it.  help!

if you don't mind interrupting the album sync, you can do a hard shutdown of the mac by pressing and holding the power button down for 10 seconds to make sure it's all the way off.
you can then do SMC reset which is described in the following article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
after doing this turn on the mac, click on the black apple then force quit and make sure all apps are closed
open app store and try again to install the mountain lion

Mountain Lion won't allow me to save photos from Mail directly to iPhoto (as you could in all other recent OSX).  Tried opening iPhoto and then click/drag each photo onto iPhoto icon on dock (as Help instructed) but the photo will not drag.  Suggestions?

I have real a lot of posts that say to click Command+Option while opening iPhoto and this will open the Photo Library Repair window, but... this is not happening.
Be sure you're holding the correct keys and that you're holding them long enough. Depress them before clicking on iPhoto and don't let go until the menu shows up.
If you don't want to lose those photos, make a back up now. Hopefully it's not too late.

  • Mountain Lion won't let my computer boot..

I installed mountain lion, and it installed then when I restarted it, it sat at the gray Apple boot screen. I held option and ran disk utility to repair anything and nothing was wrong. Now I held option again and am using the "search the internet for help" option. Someone please help, how do I fix this? My iMac is late 2009

Well, I ended up booting into the Recovery partition and selected "Reinstall Mountain Lion".
After it downloaded for about an hour an a half it reinstalled the operating system and then had me restart the computer.
I restarted and instead of going through the setup process, I was asked to login.
The new password worked! and all my stuff was still there!
I guess it was good I didn't wipe the drive before doing the reinstall, not sure what went wrong to begin with but now things are going well again. Hurray!

  • Installed Mountain Lion, Won't Complete Boot

I downloaded and installed mountain lion yesterday and after the reboot from the install, it just goes through the first apple logo with the spinning icon, then the apple without the spinning icon, then shuts off and reboots. I'm posting this from safe mode on my mid-2011 MB Pro 13 inch. Everything in safe mode is extremely laggy(graphics-wise). Has anyone else had this problem or does anyone have any advice on how to get my computer back up and running?
    Things I've Tried:
    Reinstalling the OS
    Clearing the PRAM
    Verifying the HDD
    Turning off all Startup Apps
    Thank You

I am also having the same issue. I thought i would be clever and install os x mountain lion but i forget to backup all my data and took me about 6 to 7 attempts to finally install it and now i am left with the apple logo and spinning wheel of death.
I have read lots of threads with regard to this issue so i am really hoping that apple can sort this out because it worked ok before installing os x mountain lion. I was actually thinking of getting a macbook air but to be honest the whole os x mountain lion issue has left a very very bad taste in my mouth and thinking of totally binning everything apple that i have because i can't see apple fixing this issue.......................................
