Mountain Lion wont download to my hard drive

Whenever I open up the "Install OS X Mountain Lion" and after I press continue, and agree to the terms and conditions, it tells me OS X cannot be installed on my hard drive and when I quit and start the Installer, and I go through everything I just did, it now shows me a picture of the hard drive image faded, so when I click on it, it says "The disk is used for Time Machine backups" but it wont let me install OS X Mountain Lion still and I checked and I am not using my hard drive for Time Machine backups as well as not using Time Machine at all.

  • Mountain Lion Won't Install on hard drive

I am trying to install Mountain Lion on top of Lion on my startup/main sys hard drive.  It says it can't install becuase the drive is not formatted as Mac OS extended with Journaling, use disk utility to turn on journaling or reformat the drive.  When I go to Disk Utility, that option is not available, it is greyed out?  I don't want to reformat the drive and loose everything?  What can I do?

Did you select the partition (indented, under the main line for the drive)?
The sample is on an external, but should be the same on your internal.  If not, please either post a screenshot of yours, or note what's different.

Does that mean you don't have backups?   If not, that's risky.  Hard drives fail, things go wrong, people delete things in error.

  • My Mountain Lion wont download, what should I do?

I just bought a new macbook pro and I received a free OS X Mountain Lion download. But it wont let me download the app because it says it wasnt signed or the file was not verified. Can someone help?

  • Mountain lion install failed due to hard drive failure. It said I needed to repair the disk and I was taken to the lion recovery menu.

Unfortunately, and quite idiotically, I never made a back up of my files and the lion operating system before trying to upgrade. My main concern now is just making sure none of my files were lost because of the install failure. I don't know what to do from here because I'm afraid to make a mistake and never be able to recover them again. What can I do to restore my computer back to normal? When I look under Macintosh HD in the Disk Utility option on lion recovery, it seems as if it recognizes that all of my files are still intact, because about 200 GB out of 319 GB are used up on it. This correlates to the amount of files on my disk. Pleaseeee tell me I didn't just lose all of my files. Any help will be greatlyy appreciated!
    Sincerely,
    Mathew Smith

You only need the powered exernal drive, OS X reinstall is free to install on the external drive.
Hold the option key and boot from the extenral drive.
When OS X upgrades or installs (without a disk wipe first), it doesn't touch Applications and User account folders (only Apple programs) so as long as the drive and file system works, (even if OS X doesn't boot on that drive) the files can be recovered via normal drag and drop methods.
If you can't access the files normally, only then you will have to install Data Rescue on the external drive (another $100) to read the 1's and 0's of the non-encrytped files directly, bypassing the file system structure. Thus is the price for not making adequate backups.
    Most commonly used backup methods
In some major cities where there is a lot of computer tech support competition, you might be better with a local PC/Mac data recovery and restore service, saving you some money. But with the extenral hard drive you can then later make that a TimeMachine or clone drive, which you need anyway regardless.

  • Lion wont install. My hard drive is thinks it's time machine.

I can't install lion because it says that my hard drive is used for time machine backups.  What can I do?

You can easily use an external HD. If your machine has Firewire 800 that would be the fastest option. If it doesn't then a FW drive would be OK too. USB would work but would be really slow. I'd recommend any of the following:
    OWC Mercury Elite Pro series
    LaCie d2 Quadra series
    G-Tech G-DRIVE series
Personally I use the LaCie's however OWC and G-Tech are terrific and I would be happy with thier drives too. All have similar build quality and features. Once you retire the iMac you could also use the drive as a backup or for other external storage.

  • Mountain lion wont download. Message "application could not be downloaded" appearing.

Tried to downloaded lion through wifi and ethernet at two separate locations and message keeps poping up with "application could not be downloaded".
I can download other applications from the app store on the mac.
Mac was purchased only last year and am currently running snow leopard as I had reservations about lion.
It did start to download on my internet dongle, however I dont have enough on my account to download the full update.
If anyone could suggest some options, would be great.

The Lion update MUST be made from a computer running the latest Snow Leopard release of 10.6.8
Please be sure to check your must-have applications to ensure that they are Lion campatible.  There is an excellent Wiki that lists apps and their Lion-compatibility status.

I have purchased the package already then I went to my purchases and clicked on the "download" button it would load for awhile but after that nothing happened. The download didn't start and it is getting frustrating help!

Check the links in the "More Like This" sidebar to the right, here. They don't show you those when you post, but they appear afterward. There might be something in there.
People have had trouble with their networks.
Try restarting your router, your modem, and your Mac. Then, try again.
If that fails, can you find another network to download it on?

  • TS1702 OS X MOUNTAIN LION WONT DOWNLOAD

Just as the title says really. Its been downloading for 48 hours and the app store 'purchases' just says 'waiting ...'
The 'pause' button is blanked out as well.
Any ideas please and there appears to be no free help line to call even though its cost me £13.99 and I am not carting this 27 inch imac 20 miles to the nearest store.
I'd rather get a refund and stick with the older op.

And/or have you tried quitting the store and re-opening it ?
Otherwise you might get better help if you post in the Mac App Store forum.

  • Mac OS Mountain Lion wont start

Mac OS Mountain Lion wont start. It's just stuck on white screen with spinning gear, once the white screen goes, I get a kernel panic...I suspect this issue has been caused by the recently installed xcode, it was the last program I installed this morning

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
And, remove XCode. If it's needed then be sure you install the current release version for Mountain Lion.

  • I need to delete a lot of duplicates on iPhoto. I just bought my MacBook Pro and was so excited I downloaded my external hard drive without thinking through the process. I now realize I had my photos doubled up. So I actually have the same library twice.

    Hello All!
I am so excited about my new computer and I didn't know that my external hard drive had so many pictures duplicated on it. So I downloaded the entire hard drive. I thought iPhoto was going to be my answer, and now after reading a lot of discussions, it seems I have royally screwed up.  Please help me fix this problem. I am a computer novice. An even more Mac novice. I need very simple directions.  I would just start over with iPhoto, but I downloaded my digital camera with brand new photos on iPhoto and also downloaded my digital camera software on my new MacBookPro.  I am afraid if I "start over" with iPhoto I will lose my digital camera pictures. I bought the Mac to finally get my pictures straight, and look at the mess I have made.  I had AVG PC cleanup and used that program last night to delete duplicates from my PC. I also used it to delete duplicates from my external hard drive. I omega. I know, I know, too late huh? But I am teachable. And I now have my external hard drive fixed. But now, my question to the community is how to fix my new Mac, and my iPhoto.
    Thanks,

When you say to remove the photos out of the iPhoto folder, then import the clean single copies, I am understanding that the "original" file that the decloner was run against is now the "clean" single copies?
Ok, you've got iPhoto Library that you have imported everything into, you can't delete the iPhoto Library and start over because you have only one copy of some pictures in there, combined with a lot of duplicates.
You want all the duplicates out, but it will take you ages to do it by hand.
    What you do is.
1: Right click on the iPhoto Library and "Show Package Contents"
2: You will see a folder called Originals, these are all your original photo's, copy this folder to a external drive someplace, it's your backup.
3: Select the Originals folder again and from the Finder Menu > File > Duplicate.
4: Now you will have a OriginalsCopy folder, move that OriginalsCopy folder onto the desktop area out of the iPhoto Library folder. Close the iPhoto Library folder/window.
5: Download the Decloner software and install it, use it to find all the "real" duplicates, via it's content on the OriginalsCopy folder.
6: From the Finder menu > New Folder, now send the duplicate files to that folder, so all that is left in the OriginalsCopy folder is 1 copy of your pictures, minus all the duplicates which are now in New Folder.
7: Open iPhoto and remove all your pictures in there. The iPhoto Library will update to become empty.
8: Now import the pictures from the OriginalsCopy folder, these will now have only one copy of each picture.
9: Open your New Folder, from the Edit menu > Select All and
10 From the Finder > File Menu > Open With > Preview.
Now you have one copy in your iPhoto Library and the duplicates in a New Folder opened with Preview which you can compare to make sure.
Make as many backups of your pictures as you think you need during this prcess, but eventually you only want 1 picture of all you have in the iPhoto Library.
Some pictures may be the same thing but a little smaller etc., these obviously are not duplicates, and you can weed those out by hand in iPhoto.
    Good Luck.

  • Apple:  Give me a way to stop TV downloads on iTunes, or I stop buying shows on my AppleTV.  That simple.   I'm tired of automatic downloads filling my hard drive every time I open iTunes on my laptop.

I'm tired of automatic downloads filling my hard drive every time I open iTunes on my laptop.  Tonight I had to go to iTunes to verify my payment info - even though I'd already done that two days ago - and before I can even access the iTunes Store, iTunes starts downloading 44 TV shows that I've purchased over the last few months on my AppleTV; before I could completely stop it, it had entirely filled up my hard drive - 180 GB.  There's NO reason there isn't a way to stop auto-downloads of TV shows - every other type of media has the ability to stop auto-downloads, and given that I have an AppleTV (for now!), why in pasta's name would I want to load them onto my laptop?!
