Mounted .dmg search unsuccessful

Have tried to use spotlight to search a mounted .dmg volume for a particular word in files that might contain it. It doesn't work. Have tried Easyfind (alternative app) which wasn't successful either. Anything else out there that works?

Spotlight does not index .dmg mounted volumes, so it won't find anything. Easy Find should work if you've configured it correctly and the word you're searching for actually exists in the files on the mounted image. Remember you must set Easy Find's drop down menu to the proper volume you wish to search.

  • Copy file from mounted DMG to the Applications folder?

I'm wanting to copy file (application) from a mounted DMG to the Applications folder. Something like:
    tell application "Finder"
    try
    copy "Volumes:Dropbox Installer:Dropbox.app" to folder "Volumes:Macintosh HD:Applications"
    end try
    end tell
    (But that doesn't work).
Preferably overwriting the existing application in that folder. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    tell application "Finder"
duplicate file "Volumes:S001TEST:S001-S001c-TEST.zip" to folder "Volumes:Macintosh HD:Applications" with replacing
    end tell
I tried this principle in Applescript (Mavericks) and received error...
Finder got an error: Can’t set folder "Volumes:Macintosh HD:Applications" to file "Volumes:S001TEST:S001-S001c-TEST.zip".
"001TEST" is a disk image with filename of "S001TEST.dmg"
Any ideas why this won't work?

  • Can't copy files from mounted DMG. What's up??

So all of a sudden, I can't copy files from mounted DMG files. It's strange because if there is one file and I drag it to another location, like desktop, it won't copy. If I drag 2 files from the mounted DMG to the desktop one of them copies. If I drag 3, then 2 copy... it's always all but one of the files... never all of them.
I've tried repairing permissions but nothing works. I'm at a loss...
    thanks

Try holding option when you drag the files. This tells the mac to move the files to the desktop of your computer not the desktop folder of the DMG (usually a hidden folder)
If that doesn't work it may be that you need administrative privileges to move the files. Make sure you are logged on as as an administrator by selecting the account tab in system preferences and making sure it says "admin" under your user name. Log on to or create an administration account then try moving the file.
Hope this helps, let me know

  • Unable to mount *.dmg's

After installing the latest Bluetooth Patch (obtained via Software Update) on my PowerBook G4 Ti running OSX 10.4.3, whenever I try to open any disk image file (*.dmg file), I get the following error:
    Warning
The Following Disk Images Failed to Mount
    Image
    filename.dmg
    Reason
    no mountable file systems
I've tried several *.dmg's, all with the same result.
Also, the Disk Utility doesn't seem to report any issues with the actual *.dmg...I am able to view the partitions within the images.
In fact, after clicking Mount from within the Disk Utility repeatedly, the *.dmg file occasionally will mount.
Additionally, opening the same exact *.dmg files on my other macs running OS X 10.4.3 works fine.
I have booted off the OS X 10.4 DVD and repaired permissions without any luck.
Also, there are no errors on the drive according to the Disk Utility.
I was able to mount *.dmg files immediately before installing the bluetooth patch (witch was applied successfully)
Also, attempting to mount the same *.dmg files in Terminal causes that bash session to hang.
    I have no issues with mounting CD's/DVD's, HD's, or Network Drives...only *.dmg's.
Anyone have any ideas? I am stumped.
    PBG4Ti,iMacG5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I have had a number of issues after the 10.4.4 software update:
    1. Safari windows won't close by clicking the red X
    2. Can't mount disk images
    3. Can't launch applications from the Finder window (Finder re-launches itself when I click on any application...not even double-click, single-click)
All issues went away after I downloaded the 10.4.4 combo patch, used Disk Utility to burn the image to a CD (I had to drag the Disk Utility.app to my desktop and then launch it since I couldn't do that from the Finder window.), and then ran the package installer.
    Good luck!

  • Cannot mount .dmg downloads

ever since upgrade to Tiger I lost the ability to mount >dmg files. When I try to open them I get the same error message each tim.."these Disk Images failed to mount..reason ="broken pipe"!!
I cannot find this utility anywhere on my mac or Apple's site. Any help out there??

    See this discussion at MacFixit.
I did try extracting the package, and it worked as advertised. I selected a firewire drive as the destination. Just tried using this method to extract Firefox from its .dmg and the results were a little strange (the drive acquired the Firefox icon and window displayed the way the Firefox virtual drive would display when mounted). See this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4397173
    and this one:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4948821
I think you should download the COMBO 10.4.10 update for your machine, use the method described in the discussions above to extract the package to a firewire drive, the run the updater on your startup drive and see if that fixes the problem.

  • Timemachine and mounted .dmg images?

    Hi,
I wonder if I can backup with timemachine the contentes of a mounted dmg image?
My idea is to have a truecrypt volume and backup its contents. Using filevault with timemachine is not as
easy and simple as I was thinking.
So, if I can modify timemachine to backup any mounted image in /Volumes/, that would solve my problems.
    Many thanks
    Oliver

Hi guys, I have kind of similiar problem, only in my configuration there is no TC volume, whole partition was encrypted using TrueCrypt. Does anyone know the way to back up data stored on this drive with TM? BTW I understand the security issues and it's kind of cool that TM recognize encrypted volume and does not copy it's contents when its in the clear but ... shouldn't it also recognize whether my TimeCapsule is encrypted? In my case it is so it should work just fine.
Off topic - I only use TrueCrypt because once I enter password to encrypted HFS+ non system partition in Mac OS X Lion it's always avalaible to everyone, even if I unmount it, it's still unlocked, no password required to mount it again. Only way I found to lock the drive again was to shut down the system. Is there any other solution?
    Thanks,

  • Can't mount DMGs anymore

Ever since upgrading to 10.5.5 I've been unable to mount DMGs. I've tried, logging in/out, restarting, and zapping my PRAM. Nothing does it, this is what I get whenever I try to mount a dmg by double clicking it: http://img504.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture1hv8.png
Now, if I open up Disk Utility, drag the DMG into there, and click "Open" toolbar item, then it works.
    Any thoughts?

  • 10.4.4: Can't mount .dmg files or access iDisk

Shortly after updating to 10.4.4 I noticed that my daily automated backups (using Backup 3) weren't working any more. I also found that I couldn't access the iDisk via the Finder icon, or via the Go > iDisk > My iDisk option in Finder. I can still upload to my iDisk using iWeb.
I'm now also unable to mount .dmg files. When I open them in Finder or try to mount them using Disk Utility I get an error message saying that there are 'no child processes'.
What can I do about these issues? Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Solved , by installing the 10.4.4 combo update!

  • Cant mount .dmg file - gets error -4960

Ive downloaded Xcode 3.0 over wireless and had to do this in several "sessions" due to the large file size (approx 1.31 GB)
this downloading has taken hours and now for all my hard work in trying to get it - Im getting a -4960 error code when trying to mount this disk.
I searched ADF to see if a related problem has occured but if found no obvious hits.
Anyone else overcome this one ? I surely would love to avoid having to DL this bad boy again....
    Cheers

Things like BBEdit. Downloaded and purchased but now cant install because DMG files wont mount.

  • Mounting .dmg failed--broken pipe

I've just upgraded to Tiger to try to solve this problem, but it did not help.
    What can I do now?
I have something corrupt that does not allow .dmg files to set up and can't prepair the disk image to open....Mounting Failed--broken pipe.
However, the file shows up in my download file at the correct size, when i try to open it with Disk Image Mounter (right click) nothing happens.
I was hoping that upgrading os would correct this, but no. This 'broken pipe' must be a clue. Am I missing some file? What could it be. I do not want to do an archive and install if I can help it.

Hi Richard, Welcome to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
I have seen 'broken pipe' on these forums. Do a search on pipe and see what you find.
    Good Luck, JP

  • Files disappearing from mounted .DMG files

Hi, I've had this issue occur a few times in Tiger and I'd like to know if anyone else has experienced this and if there's a known workaround. Sometimes, when browsing a disk image, or, less commonly, a physical disc like a CD, files in the Finder will seem to disappear from the image/disk when clicked on. First the filenames will go, then the files themselves, and evidently those files then become unreadable in general as applications can't access them. I don't get any error messages; it's just like the filesystem on that disk eats itself away and vanishes. I can unmount the disk without any issue.
I'm having this problem right now with any disk image I mount on my XServe -- it goes through the "Verify" step just fine, shows up on my desktop, I can browse and even open files, but inevitably within a very short period of time the above occurs, and it becomes useless. I KNOW it can't be the .dmg file that's the problem, because if I share the .dmg over Personal File Sharing and mount it from another Mac, this problem does NOT occur. It's just on the one Mac hosting the files. Any idea what this could mean, and what could solve it?
Also, I know a lot of times a restart will cure this weird little glitches, but I would really like a solution, if you know what I mean... particularly on a server, I cannot afford to restart whenever I have a problem.

Sounds like you have run into a very strange, and unfortunately no uncommon, bug involving file systems from either servers or FAT 32 mounted external drives. See this discussion:

  • Mac OS 10.7 Server won't mount DMG's after opening and closing - "Resource Temporarily Unavailable"

I am running Mac OS 10.7.3 Server on Mac Pro 2 x 2.66 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon with multiple users editing on Avid.
DMG's containing raw camera footage are stored on the server, mounted by connected users on their desktops to allow Avid to access the enclosed data within the DMG's. Recently we've started encountering a problem opening the DMG's after they've recently been opened and closed. After opening and closing a DMG. when we try to open it again from the same user/connected computer or any other user/computer we see an error message saying "The following disk images couldn't be opened" NAME OF DMG "Resource temporarily unavailable". This happened to several users with several DMG's.
We have since restarted the server, which appeared to fix the problem for about a week and now we are having the same issue again.
The only changes made recently have been an update to version 4.2 of our ISIS 5000 which all of the Avid systems edit off of, but I don't beleive that to be the cause of the DMG opening issue. I suspect it might be caused by the Pram still thinking that the DMG's are open when they've already been closed.
Not sure if this is relevant, but we had been running only Mac OS 10.7 systems connected to the server but within the last few months we've been adding several more systems including those with OS 10.8.
Has anyone else encountered this issue? Does anyone know the fix to this problem?
Thanks for any and all help!

Also, we have been able to copy the DMGs to desktops and external drives, which normally would not be possible when a DMG is currently open by another user which is the standard situation in which a DMG would say "Resource Temporarily Unavailable".
After copying to another location, they open normally so we believe it is an issue isolated to the server itself.
    Thanks!

  • Finder freezes when mounting dmg

After the recent system update, Finder now freezes whenever I try to mount a dmg. In Console, the log for hdiejectd just says 'running', and I can no longer do anything with Finder, windows no longer refresh if I move them around the screen. If I relaunch Finder via Terminal, then the mounted disk image shows up, and Finder becomes functional again. But this is annoying to have to do every time! Is there a better fix out there please?

Also, had to relaunch Finder in Terminal, because if I tried to relaunch in GUI when it's frozen, I get a 'the application finder can't be opened (-10810)' error. gah!

  • Unrecognized Filesystem  error when mounting dmg

Ok. So my problem is this.
My MacBook Pro became unresponsive, when I booted, it gave a question mark on the white screen instead of starting Snow Leopard. Still don't know why, but that isn't really important now.
When this happened I got my snow leopard cd, put it in, and made a .dmg of the drive, just in case I could retrieve something. Then proceeded to format the drive.
Now, when I try to mount the .dmg, the finder says: unrecognized filesystem. Cannot mount it through the terminal either. I am wondering, is there anything I can do? I am not really versed in the terminal commands so I am not sure what is possible at this point. I would really like to get my data back though.

[DiskWarrior|http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html] may be able to repair the disk image, if the problem is simply a damaged disk image. If it's something worse than that, you may not have any luck.
How did you make the disk image? If you selected your hard drive, which was damaged, and clicked New Image, you've probably just created an image of a damaged disk, which may or may not be repairable. In the future, a more appropriate way to create an emergency backup in this situation is to use the Restore tab in Disk Utility. Despite the name, it does both backups and restores... not the kind of thing I'd want to rely on for everyday backups, but it's good for emergencies.
Of course, you'd be better off to never let yourself get into that situation. Start backing up regularly. If you're not sure how, take a look at my [Mac Backup Guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/backups>.

  • Problems with Disk Utility & Mounting DMG!! Help!!

Hey guys, im a fairly inexperienced mac user anyways I recently bought a IBOOK G3 with Tiger 10.4 and i'm having major issues with Disk Utility and installing applications.
The issues with D.I are that it loads up then I get the error message "Disk Utlity started but a background process needed in Disk Utility didn't start properly. Please quit and restart Disk Utility. And when I do restart it, i get the same error over and over.
Also my second problem is whenever I try to and install DMG files I get the error: "Broken Pipe" and sometimes "Device Not Configured"
I've tried searching for resolutions for each problem but they both involve the other functioning! I'm really at a loss, i've tried using programs like pacifist to reinstall my original files etc and they haven't seemed to help.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you xxx

Hi Kellie, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
Report if there were errors please.
