Mounted volume not seen by Finder

I have 2 AFP shares on the same volume of a G4 Xserve (10.4.8, but problem has been going on for at least a couple updates), with different permissions (Open Directory users, ACLs).
I've run into a problem fairly frequently lately where users with access to both shares can access only one (on various models running 10.4.7 and 10.4.8). Both shares are still mounted -- I can them through the terminal -- but for some reason the Finder doesn't see them both. I have to umount the unseen share and reconnect before it works again. This is driving me crazy. Has anyone else seen this? Any suggestions as to why it might be happening? Thanks for any information!

Thanks for the response, Jeff. Relaunching the Finder doesn't do it. Any other thoughts? I don't see anything weird in the AFP logs on the server, but since so many different clients are having the issue, it seems as though that's probably where the problem lies...
next time this occurs, try relaunching the finder
(option-click Finder in the dock)
I have seen where volumes are mounted in /Volumes but
don't appear in the Finder. A Finder relaunch
resolves it. This certainly isn't a fix, but could be
one step in narrowing down the issue.

I just got an iPad mini, when I try to upload my iPhone backup from my Mac i get the message to upgrade my iTunes. I can not seen to find where the download link is for iPads on apple website. Can anyone help?

The message is referring to iTunes on your computer, not the iPad : http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
The built-in apps on the iPad can only be updated via iOS updates, so if your iPad mini is on iOS 6.0.2 then its up-to-date

  • Mounted Volume not shwoing up with Windows 2012 R2 failover cluster

    Hi
We configured some drives as mounted volumes and configured it with Failover cluster. But it's not showing up the mounted volume details with Cluster Manager, it's showing the details as seen below
Expect support from someone to correct this issue
    Thanks in advance

    Hi LMS,
Are you doubt about the disk shown as GUID? Cluster Mount point Disk is showing as a Volume GUID in server 2012 R2 Failover Cluster I creating a mountpoint inside the cluster
and had the same behavior, instead of mount point name we had the volume GUI after volume label, that must by design.

  • Mount volume not working in 10.4.6

Could someone please explain why this script does not work in 10.4.6?
    tell application "Finder"
    activate
    mount volume "afp://192.168.1.100/thesharetomount"
    end tell
Works fine in 10.3.9 but 10.4.6 gives error "some object was not found"
    Thanks for any info

Managed to figure out a trick to get around this problem.
I added user name to the mount command
    tell application "System Events"
set myuser to get full name of current user
    end tell
    tell application "Finder"
    activate
    mount volume "afp://" & myuser & ":@192.168.1.100/sharetomount"
    end tell
Now it works but can't figure out why it does not without giving a user name?

  • Mounted Volume Not Showing On Desktop or Sidebar

Our company uses a Mac Mini running OS 10.10 Yosemite to share files. File Sharing is setup to share contents on the Mac Mini with other Macs and PCs. Sharing is working fine. However, in the last couple days when logging into the Mac Mini the mounted volume (Mac Mini) no longer shows on the desktop, sidebar or when accessing the client hard drive. In order to access the Mac Mini after mounting via log in an alias to the Mac Mini needs to be created and access via the alias. Folders from the Mac Mini can be added to the side bar and accessed that way, but the main folder for the Mac Mini is only accessible through the alias. Preferences in the Finder are set to show mounted volumes and servers on the desktop.
Computers accessing the Mac Mini are running OS 10.6, 10.9, 10.8.

Check the settings in the General tab of the Finder's preferences.

  • Applications Volume not found in Finder (Mac owner for 3 weeks)

Hi, I goofed today. I had an error in my Verify Disk (Below), so I thought I would boot from my OSX CDs, and fix it in Repair Disk. I ended up actually going through a new installation, choosing the non erase option. (I did not know how to boot from CDs)
However, the install would not complete. I booted from the Backup Drive and that worked well and copied the backup to my Mac HD. (Using Carbon Copy Cloner on a LaCie FireWire Drive)
All seems well except in Finder, when I select Applications, it says Volume not found. However, when I choose Applications from my Macintosh HD Volume, the Applications are there and work fine. Documents, Photos Music is all accessible from Finder left side Icons.
What do I need to do to get my system back to normal?
For future reference, how do I fix the initial problem, and how do I boot from the OS CDs
    Thanks for your help

Actually, it sounds like you have some sort of an alias problem. Just exactly where in Finder are you getting the error? Is it the Sidebar? If so, drag the Applications folder out of the Sidebar, it will go "poof"--then just drag the folder from MacHD into the Sidebar.

  • Files not seen in Finder but available from application

This is a really bizarre problem that I can't quite make sense. I was using a program called 'Transmit' and noticed that a folder I have on my external hard drive suddenly disappeared. The folder was no longer visible in Finder. However, when I open the application it was created with (Logic Express) and attempt to open files from this 'missing' folder, it opens them without a problem. However, this folder continue to remain hidden from Finder. What is even stranger, is that when I use 'Whatsize' to scan my external drive, I still see the folder!!!
    Help!

There are two things that can make files and directories invisible to finder on a HFS volume, and that's the unix way, when a filename starts with a period "." and the mac legacy way with the invisible bit (a bit that can be switched for each entry in HFS).
I would suspect it is the unix way as the files came from a NTFS partition which cannot hold invisible bits. For the unix way you just have to rename the offending files and or directories to remove the dot (from the cli you would use mv) for example:
    mv ~/Desktop/.Copied_Directory ~/Desktop/Copied_Directory
For the invisible bit there is no default method built in... Apple have a cli tool called SetFile but you need to install the developer kit to get it. Alternatively there are various 3rd party apps that allow you to change the invisible bit. but i would find it very odd if this was the case... coming from NTFS.
Another easier way that lets to look at all files in the finder regardless of their invisibility is this:
Paste in terminal to show invisibles:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
    killall Finder
Paste in terminal to hide invisibles:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
    killall Finder
If you still cannot see the files in finder... and you cannot copy the files via the terminal then i suspect the NTFS volume is corrupt... however that might just be the file-system not the files. Next stage would be to use recovery software to see if you can recover the data.

  • WD Passport not mounted and not seen in Disk Utility, but something seen in Terminal

    Hi,
I have a WD 1TB Passport external hard drive.  THe light comes on and the disc spins, but I can't see the hard drive in disk utilitiy or anywhere else.  I know that it connects.  I saw a post about using terminal to mount using code, but it never found the drive.  I opened Console and removed and then plugged in teh drive again and what it says is the following:
    kernel:USBMSC identifier (non-unique): 0F06CB9C0F06CCCA 0x1058 0x0 0x1015, 3
I have no idea what this means.  Please help me try to find my external drive again.
    Thank you.

If you have another non WD enclosuer, swap into that one and see if it is now detected in Disk Utility.
Contact WD technical support for assistance.
    Ciao.

  • Connect to server/Mount Volume not honoring user in URL

I connect to an SMB share on a Windows server in a domain using a particular domain user, for example smb://user1@myserver1 . I then connect to a different server in the same domain with a different user, for example smb://user2@myserver2 . The SMB mounter in OS X 10.7 ignores the user specified in the second URL, and instead uses the user from the first mount point instead. This is very troubling for people that have to connect to different servers with different users. I've verified that this is what actually happens by mounting an SMB share on a Windows server, and then viewing the Open File Sessions in the Computer Management snap-in. Rather than seeing the user that I specified in the URL (user2), I'm instead seeing the user that I initially used to connect to a completely different server (user1).

As I said I never used this before Lion and I don;t have any smb shares to test on but this is what I've found which may be of help:
The following workflow connects to my MB from an iMac:
Notice that the MB name is administrator's MacBook with a space and an apostrophe. Notice the %chars for the space and the apos so I don't think that the %20 for the space in your case is causing the problem.
When I tried this by entering afp://administrator's MacBook it failed. The error message showed the special chars converted as in the url that worked what was missing was the everything after the _ in the name.
When I did a connect to server in the Finder and selected Recent servers from the pull down and selected administrator's MacBook the url in the action above was shown. I copied the url from the server address line and pasted into the Automater action.
This might be of some help in your case at least it might show if the %20 is really causing the problem.
    regards

  • Airport Extreme (2nd gen) not seen in Finder under "shared"

    Specs:
    15-inch Early 2008 >Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo>Memory  4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM>Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
Airport Extreme Second Gen with Airport Utility 7.6.1
I do not want to update to Mountain Lion again.. since the first time proved to bring with it crashing and lots of glitches. And, I only ever do totally clean installs, wiping my HD with a 3x pass in disk utility. Main problem: External HD's which used to connect to my network with the AE under the "shared" sidebar, no longer appear. Matter of fact, my Airport Extreme in general, no longer appears in the Network folder. Nor do I see the ext HD under the "Disks" tab in Airport Utilities.
The external IS formatted as HFS Journaled *extended*, and has been for a while, back to when it used to work. I'm not sure of when it stopped being recognized, but the factors that have changed since then are that I did update to ML, but soon after went back to Lion. I also recently moved, and had to set up a new network of course. I also think perhaps that the Airport Utility version changed during this time.
I've read so many support documents, forum threads *different forums* and nothing seems to point me to a working solution. The HD does indeed work, since I of course plugged it straight in to my MacBook Pro's, and it shows up on both of them. Oh, should note that the other MBP is a year newer than the one listed above. It is the first unibody model 13".  Question is, why would something that was working, stop working? I'd maybe be brave enough to roll back to Snow Leopard, but I'm really positive it was also working under Lion, so I shouldn't have to.
I'd really love some help on this please. Oh, and this is NOT in order to use Time Machine. I never use it. This is simply to access redundant backup drives on the network for photos and music.
    Thanks much,
    Doug

I spoke too soon, sort of. While the information I got from the Sonos website is accurate, and did indeed help in getting things started, the external HD with the enclosure I bought still isn't working! I even went so far as to reformat the drive last night, even though it was already formatted correctly. Just tried a few minutes ago, and nothing...  The permissions look exactly as they do on the other disks so I'm not sure of what's up. At first, I thought that maybe Apple changed something about how the Airport Extreme sees externals, such as they must meet specific network based criteria... but then I tried a several year old iOmega portable Go drive, that I hooked up via micro USB and it worked immediately.
Now I'm wondering if there really might be something to what you said, about the enclosure. Is there a precedent for such an issue? Has anybody else here experienced this?  But the wacky thing is that this external with enclosure was working perfectly not too long ago. So what has changed? I moved, and set up a new network. That has changed. But aside from that? I tried earlier firmware versions, and that did nothing. So either an OS update or my enclosure is all of a sudden wonky... even though it works perfectly otherwise? VERY confusing.  BTW, the enclosure is a Rosewill.

  • Cd dvd drive not present in Finder

    Hi,
This is my first macbook pro, I love this machine however it started giving me problems and I am not an expert by any means. I've searched the net and I couldn't find any answers to my questions so I figured it's time to turn to the experts. Hope you guys can shine some light on the subject cause this is driving me crazy.
I have a macbook pro running a snow leopard with HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N. However it doesn't appear in the finder window or give me an icon on the desktop. I tried doing some of the basic troubleshooting. Make to sure there is a check mark present in the finder preferences window. Disk utility and system profiler both acknowledge the drive as being there however When I put in a DVD, it thinks for 10 seconds and it spits it right back out. And I can not access this drive at all. I'm thinking it might be a problem with the code somewhere but I don't have the slightest idea where to look. I don't know if this is relevant, when I plug in my ipod touch it doesn't recognizes that in the finder window either.
I don't currently have an install disk for the OS. I ordered one and waiting for it to show up. I'm just hoping that it doesn't have to go to that. Any help I can get with this problem would be greatly appreciated it.
    Thanks in advance
    T

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Unless there's a disc in that drive, it won't appear anywhere except in System Profiler. What you'd expect to see those places is a mounted volume, not the empty drive.
When I put in a DVD, it thinks for 10 seconds and it spits it right back out.
That's a different problem. Have you tried it with different DVDs and CDs, including commercial ones? If it won't accept any optical discs, the drive may be defective.
when I plug in my ipod touch it doesn't recognizes that in the finder window either.
That's normal. If you launch iTunes you should see the iPod in iTunes' "sidebar".

  • Ipod not recognised by finder, updater or itunes

whilst updating my ipod (older version 30gb with dock) with my mac last night (power mac G5) - there was a problem which meant that i had to restart the mac. now the mac doesn't recognise the ipod (not seen in finder or itunes) and i can't restore it, because updater doesn't see it either. the ipod software doesn't see the music either, although it must still be there as the "about" section in settings tells me that there is still alot of usage of the memory. any help with this would be gratefully received.

    Have you been through these?
