Mounted volume on desktop

Not sure if this is really a Mac question, but I'm not very conversant in 'volumes' so maybe someone can help. I just installed Adobe Flash Player 9 and now have its icon on my desktop. When I use Check Info, it tells me this is a 'volume'. I've tried moving it to my Applications folder, but only an alias appears, while the icon remains on my desktop. If I select the icon, I have the option of ejecting it, but not sure I'm supposed to do that. Any way I can move or remove this icon? Thanks!

Hi
Many Mac programs are bundled online in the form of disk images (like an archive file). Once you launch them, they mount to the desktop just like a real disk or drive. Inside the disk image will be either a straight application, which gets copied to the Applications folder, or an installer, which you will need to run to install the application. I'm not sure which the Flash Player is (probably an installer), but once it's correctly installed, you can actually eject the mounted image (by dragging it to the trash) and also trash the original unmounted disk image (which will be a .dmg file) from your desktop or Downloads folder.

  • Mounted Volumes o Desktop can't get rid of?

I have 2 mounted volumes on my desktop that I have tried to get rid of and can't. There is not eject option. When I drag to Trash I get an error message that says "The disk "Net" wasn't ejected because one or more programs may be using it" except there are no programs running it. When I use "get info" it says:
    Kind: Volume
    Server File: file://localhost/net
    Reboot and there still there.
How do I get rid of these?

net is a necessary system folder which is normally hidden. have you enabled showing hidden items in finder perhaps? run the following terminal command
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 0; killall Finder
does it hide "net"? and what is the other one called? is it "home"?

  • Mounted Volume Not Showing On Desktop or Sidebar

Our company uses a Mac Mini running OS 10.10 Yosemite to share files. File Sharing is setup to share contents on the Mac Mini with other Macs and PCs. Sharing is working fine. However, in the last couple days when logging into the Mac Mini the mounted volume (Mac Mini) no longer shows on the desktop, sidebar or when accessing the client hard drive. In order to access the Mac Mini after mounting via log in an alias to the Mac Mini needs to be created and access via the alias. Folders from the Mac Mini can be added to the side bar and accessed that way, but the main folder for the Mac Mini is only accessible through the alias. Preferences in the Finder are set to show mounted volumes and servers on the desktop.
Computers accessing the Mac Mini are running OS 10.6, 10.9, 10.8.

Check the settings in the General tab of the Finder's preferences.

  • Mounted Volumes doesn't show automatically in Finder Window

Hi, is it a preference that allows me to have access directly to my mounted volume (like in OS 10.5) in the Finder windows? Right now, i have to drag them manually so they show next time i mount them. I would like to see the mounted volumes in the Devices section, below my Hard Drive icon.
I know i can access them via the Shared section but thats one more click to do… yeah, i'm lazy
    Thanks
    Ben

Let's take one more shot before we admit defeat...
    Go to Users/yourname/Library/Preferences
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Drag both files to the desktop
    Then, restart.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

  • Duplicate shared volume on Desktop

    Hello,
I sometimes have duplicate shared volume on my desktop. When I open
    /Volumes I can see theVolume, theVolume-1, theVolume-2, ...
the shared volumes are mounted using Applescript and unmounting after a copy is done.
How can I prevent this ?
    regards,
    Didier.

Hi jbbcck, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Try doing a Get Info on the mounted Volumes/Devices on one that does connect, any clues there?
Have you checked the IPs of the drive & the Tiger Macs?

  • Yosemite run "mount volumes" is not same as Mountain Lion

I have a script to mount the shared folder from Windows server (named: servicedesk) as a volume in Yosemite iMac.
    -- -------begin script-----
set loggedInUser to do shell script "whoami"
    tell application "Finder"
      try
      mount volume "smb://servicedesk/M"
do shell script "ln -sf /Volumes/M/ ~/Desktop/M"
      end try
    end tell
    ----------End script--------
When run the script on Mountain Lion 10.8.5 iMac, I can list the "M" when run the command in terminal: ls /Volumes/
But when run the script on Yosemite iMac, It's show "servicedesk" instead "M" when run the command in terminal: ls /Volumes/
I don't know why it is difference and can't do anything to create symlink to the Desktop now. Please help????
    Thank you,

    Thanks for your reply @Camelot
Your reply is solved my question.
But I'm still wondering why it is same the way of script done (in OS 10.10.1) with 2 targets: shared folder on iMac and shared folder on Windows. The script which "mount volume" on MAC is have expected result, Windows is not. Please see the picture to easier understand
1/ "Idrive", is mapped from iMAC, "M" is mapped from WIndows
2/ But when show the result in Terminal, "Idrive" can list, "M" doesn't but it's shown "servicedesk". The icon is also difference on the Desktop!!!
    much appreciate your comments

  • My iPod does not mount to the desktop!

Under my system profile, my computer recognizes that my iPod is present, yet it does not mount to my desktop or iTunes. What could be wrong?

Good, I'm not sure if this will work, but it's worth a try.
Here's a way to do it without Terminal.
In finder, go to the "Go" menu and choose "Go to Folder". In the box that opens, type "/Volumes". When that opens, you are looking at the devices mounted to the operating system. If no iPod is there, then even though the system sees the device, for some reason it can't mount it at all.
If you have permissions problems, then you might have to enable the root account. If that's the case I can give you directions on how to do that, but I don't think you'll need it as long as you are an Administrator of the computer.
If that folder opens, and you don't see your iPod, let me know. Even though I have seen this happen a bunch of times, I'm having trouble recreating it at the moment, so I can't test to see if I can manually mount it. I'd like to try to give you directions to do so.
Otherwise, if you see an entry for you iPod, try clicking on it and see if you get in.

  • Can i get my time capule to mount to my desktop with an "A" to "A" USB cord not wirelessly?

What I am trying to do is get my time capsule to mount to my desktop using a USB cord, not load up as a shared drive wirelessly or through an ethernet cable. I want to back it up (I use it as my server at work) using BackBlaze so i will be able to access all of my files anywhere I go. The only way BackBlaze will back up an external drive is if it's connected with a USB or a firewire. Is this even possible?

BackBlaze's FAQ says that they're looking into allowing NAS backup in the future (Time Capsule being a NAS):
What Does Not Get Backed Up
Network (NAS) drives, remotely mounted computers or volumes, or shared volumes do not get backed up. The reason for this is not technical, but a business decision. Backing up mounted or network drives can easily be abused. A user could mount the 10 or 20 computers in their home or small business and back them all up to one account for $5/month. We are evaluating a service that would backup NAS drives for a small per GB fee.

  • Gnome "cannot mount volume"

Gnome doesn't want to mount my USB pen drive.  I get the following message:
    Cannot mount volume.
    Error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied.
A security policy in place prevents this sender from sending this message to the recipient...
I have hal, dbus & fam in my DAEMONS and I have added myself to the optical and storage groups.  I have also logged off and on and tried restarting, but I still get this error.

I am having this same issue. However, I have added myself to both groups and logged out and back in again. I cannot get this to work on either my laptop or my desktop. Any other suggestions?
**Solved on my laptop: You have to restart dbus.
Log out of your DE, and go to a console
    /etc/rc.d/dbus restart
    /etc/rc.d/hal restart
    Should work now

  • Could not mount Volume "Lacie Disk" HELP!

I have had a Lacie disk plugged into my Airport Extreme and have used it for wireless transfers and backups just fine since April...
I have an alias of the Lacie on my Desktop and clicking this has allowed the drive to mount.
Today, for some unknown reason I get MOUNT FAILED, could not mount volume "Lacie Disk".
Can someone please help trouble shoot? I have tried restarting the computer and restarting the drive and Airport Extreme. I don't know what hapened.
    Help is greatly appreciated...!!
    Bill

    Hen,
Just thought I'd drop by for an unsolicited essay on this kind of problem. In my experience, computer don't have luck (and they're low on the food chain relative to vacuum cleaners).
However, always suspect an Apple enhancement if you've just upgraded & fixed permissions. Upgrades change things, but they also patch vulnerabilities that were there: be paranoid. They also add bulk (usually), and a resource-started computer can react in strange ways.
So, did you check your previous network settings for accuracy first?-for, dare I say it here, some 'trojan horses' change these. (I always treat a new problem first as a security problem.) If not, you should check them in a week and assure yourself they're what you typed in.
My LaCie drive, though a DVD burner, just quit after the last 10.4.11 upgrade (or iTunes or Quicktime upgrade). On my other Mac, upgrading Quicktime & iTunes caused downloaded virtual disc images to fail to mount, with no error message in any log. The second I traced to a new Apple intolerance for home-made typefaces, three of which I removed from the 'computer collection' (where they shouldn't have been anyway). The first problem is proving more elusive. I fear a conflict with a so-called 'third-party' device driver.
The professionals' second maxim (after 'take the defaults') is, 'when trouble strikes, reboot'. (This is for the 5-minute corporate repair; they dump to logs & perform essential postmortems after hours.) Your solution is a variety of the second. (As is the deleting of preference files when trouble strikes.) Even if this fix is permanent, check your network settings now, to see whether they've been changed.

  • How to Mount volume on Airport Extr at (re)boot/wake-up  ??

HD is on my AirPort Extreme in the home here.
Whenever I start the MacBook Pro up, I always must locate it and connect.
Is there a simpler way to have computer search and mount the volume?
    Thanks again (and again)

I think your terminology might be a bit askew. It appears that you are describing that you want your MacBook to connect to the wireless access point on the AirPort Extreme. I also appears that you are trying to mount a hard drive located on an AirPort Extreme base station when you log on.
The hard drive (or "volume") is easy to reconnect to when you log in. Log in and connect to the volume as you normally do. Bring up System Preferences and click on "Accounts" near the bottom. Select your account on the left side and then choose "Login Items" on the bar. Drag the mounted volume icon from your desktop to the pane listing startup items. Now when you log onto your computer, it will automatically locate and mount that volume for you - if you are on the network.
If you are having trouble reconnecting to a wireless access point on an AirPort Extreme base station, that is a whole other story. Those can be very very tricky and a question about that would be best asked in the network area of these forums. I'm sure if you ask or search there, you'll find an answer very rapidly. I unfortunately do not know how to tweak a wireless connection that is misbehaving.

  • Mount Volume

On a iMac running SL, I want to automount a network volume and place it on the desktop for ANY user to see.  However, I want the student to click on it the mounted volume and enter there own login information.  I can add the network volume to Login Items but I want the student to logon to the volume with there own information.
For example, take a network volume called OUSER and I add it to the Login Items.  I want Mary (student) to logon to the Mac and I want Mary to see the OUSER (network volume) and I want Mary to enter her username and password.
I want the network volume to be on the desktop regardless of which student logon on to the network.  Next, I want the student to click on the network volume and a dialog box appears asking for them to logon.
Do I make sense? I don't want the teacher to ask every student to perform the GO-Connect to Server- logon- select the network volume.  I want the network volume to appear on every user's desktop and logon to the network volume.

    Go to Safari
    Enter: afp://server
Drag the URL from the URL field to the desktop.  This will create a Safari shortcut, that will mount the specified AFP file server
Replace afp with smb if you want to use a CIFS/SMB server.
You could do something using an Automator Workflow app.  The easiest way that I know of is to use "Run Shell Script" specifying:
    open afp://server
    -OR-
    open smb://server
There may be fancier ways to do this with Automator.
There is also Applescript, but I'm weak with Applescript.  But I'm sure a Google search would turn something up.

  • Delete File From Mounted Volume

    Hey,
I am trying to delete the "Calendar Cache" files on both my laptop PowerBook G4 and the Mac Pro Quad that I sync my calendars with. I am using ChronoSync and the individual calendars sync fine, but there is a little house keeping needed with the cache file. They need to be deleted on both systems in order to "refresh" the views of the calendars.
So after the sync of calendars, I have the software initiating an AppleScript that deletes both. Here's the script:
+(* PowerBook Files / delete cache file *)+
+(* Please note that both systems have the same username. This may be arise a conflict *)+
    +tell application "Finder"+
    + activate+
+ tell application "Finder" to delete file "Calendar Cache" of folder "Calendars" of folder "Library" of disk "useranthony"+
    +end tell+
+(* Mac Pro Quad/ delete cache file *)+
    +tell application "Finder"+
    + mount volume "afp://10.10.10.1/anthonyabraira"+
+ tell application "Finder" to delete file "Calendar Cache" of folder "Calendars" of folder "Library" of disk "/volumes/useranthony"+
    +end tell+
I am having trouble addressing a deletion on the networked Mac Pro Quad.

why send it to the trash — just delete it...
(* PowerBook Files / delete cache file )
    try
do shell script "rm -rf /Library/Calendars/Calendar\\ Cache"
    end try
you may need a delay for the Mac Pro Quad to mount
( Mac Pro Quad/ delete cache file *)
--the mount and then the delay
    delay 4
    try
do shell script "rm -rf /THE-CORRECT/PATH-HERE/Library/Calendars/Calendar\\ Cache"
    end try

  • Secured WebDAV Mounted Volume Authorization Issues

I use a secure WebDAV mounted volume from myDisk.se and up until the latest Security Update have had zero issues being able to manipulate files and folders as I would on a normal volume. However, since the installation of the Security Update (2009-004 (PowerPC) 1.0) I find weird things happening with this mounted volume:
    1) I am able to mount the secured WebDAV share using my security credentials.
    2) I can create a default "untitled" folder but when I try to change its name, the WebDAV authorization dialog pops up and despite entering the same credentials (why, I am not sure as the volume has already been properly credentialed in order to be mounted), access is denied.
    3) Trying to create a file within a folder on the mounted WebDAV volume I previously created pre-update causes the same authorization issue.
I have no other WebDAV shares I can try to mount from any other companies so I am not sure if this is a myDisk issue or one borne from the Security Update. I am not a .Mac/MobileMe user and that info is not filled out in System Preferences. The internal hard drive has been meticulously maintained with Disk and Permissions repair being run both before and after each and every software update installed. Likewise, the volume's structure is also checked both before and after and shows no need for repairs.
Any ideas? Perhaps there is a corrupted file somewhere that's affecting the authorizations needed by this third-party WebDAV volume?
The machine that has this problem is the last model iBook G4/1.33GHz 12" display, 1.5GB RAM, and a 100GB 5400rpm HD which replaced the stock OEM 40GB 4200rpm drive about one year ago.
I'm not willing to do an Archive and Install at this point as the loss of the WebDAV access to my online volume is not critical. Inconvenient as heck but not to the point where I'm willing (or able) stop my normal work to spend the hours it will take to get WebDAV access back.
Thanks in advance for any insights.

same problem here with webdav, I can't mount my idisk from university network on Mac Pro 10.5.3 (although it mounts fine from home network on both ibook and PMG5 10.5.3). Everything was fine with 10.5.2 and I already re-installed 10.5.3 combo. Other bugs as well with .Mac prefs (keeps crashing, sometimes it shows the available space on idisk but still no mounting, with error -35 or -8086), but .Mac sync is OK
