Mounting a second SATA HDD in the Pavillion 500-304nd

I have recently purchased the desktop mentioned in the subject line, along with a second 1TB SATA HDD to add to it. I did find the connections for a second drive but cannot find a place on the computer's frame to physically mount the drive. What's the secret here? Do I need an extra part to mount the HDD, and if so: where can I find one?

This HP posted document shows how to remove the existing hard drive but it doesn't show how to add a second hard drive since your PC is not provisioned for multiple hard drives.
Review this thread. Look at message #9. There are many different ways to modify a PC as such but the solution was not provided by HP. If you think that this solution would work for your then ask the poster where to obtain the needed parts.

Depends on the original drive. According to OWC, at least last time I checked some months ago, any current WD drive they sell (up to 2 TB?) will be able to be swapped directly. I am unable to confirm this personally. But, even so, that was a while back. You should check with them again on this. As for Seagates, that might not be so simple.

SLOW performance SATA HDD on the 915P Neo2 Platinum

Almost for a week I have tried to setup Windows XP prof. with SP2. Unfortunately the performance of the system is very poor.
For this reason I extended let test the system and compare the results with an other system.
My System Other system with diamond-maximum one 10, 160GB ATA133 disk
Disk - Sequential Read = 3.37 Disk - Sequential Read = 63.04
Disk - Sequential Write = 3.51 Disk - Sequential Write = 55.99
Disk - Random Seek + RW = 1.91 Disk - Random Seek + RW = 2.7
Disk Mark = 31.08 Disk Mark = 440.24
As you can see the result is awful.
Have tried all settings for a single HDD in the BIOS, but unfortunately no plausibly results got.
Is there people have the same problem ?
Kan any one help me out of this ?

Can you try with HDSPEED? goto http://www.georgebreese.com/net/software/ and download HDSPEED. Look for the Bandwidth and Sequential. Sequential is the actual throughput speed of your HDD, some 55~65MB/s is pretty good. Bandwidth is your HDD cache throughput speed, which should be some 100MB/s.

How can I move my three SATA HDDs to the new Mac Pro without backing up?

I am doing initial shopping for the new Mac Pro but have come to the frustrating realization that I cannot move my HDDs to the new computer for free. Sure, I can migrate my OS drive to the new one, but my other three disks inside my 2007 Mac Pro are in a pickle. I want an economically viable method of getting those three drives to the new Mac without backing them up, formatting or something like that. Also, I would prefer a transfer method that will rival the speed of it being internal. I don't think USB 3.0 can do this, but Thunderbolt 2 can? Everything I've seen online has been outrageiously expensive or requires me to reformat (RAID).
What I'm looking for:
Connect three or more HDDs of various capacities to new Mac Pro
Have the transfer speeds rival or exceed that of my current grandpa computer (Mac Pro 1,1)
Have it not be incredibly expensive (anything over $300 is ridiculous)
Have it be no more than two devices, one prefered unless they are individual enclosures that can either daisy chain and/or are inexpensive.

The pavillion 500-319na only has a180 w power supply is this enough

I am thinking of buying a HP Pavillion 500-319na desktop PC, like the spec but my main worry is that its only has a 180 watt power supply, is this enough.

In actual fact, the Psu is an internal unit. It seems there has been an error when listing the specs.
It is a 180W internal PSU.
The question remains for anyone willing to help us understand.
How is it possible to run this system with these components with just a 180w PSU at moderate to full load/system resource capacity.
Every single Wattage calculator I've used online (mainstream manufacturers and industry accepted benchmarks) show that this setup needs at least a 220w to 300w psu to run at full load. Have there been comprimises made in some shape or form?
I'd really appreciate any input that the community can provide.
Please help fill in the gaps!

K9A2 CF Sata HDD BOOT Problem

Hello all.
Got this nice MB yesterday, and everything got running without problem.
Today, a few hours back, my computer shut itself down, and after that
it wont boot with ANY Sata HDD. The computer boots up, you get a 1-2 second
glimpse at the BIOS data, then the computer shuts down.
I don't have any problem with my sata burner. With that my computer boots up OK.
I have tried to flash the BIOS from 1.2 to 1.6, and still the same problem.
Beside the Sata HDD trouble, everything else is working flawlessly.

MSI Z87-G45 will not load OS with two SATA HDD's connected

I have an MSI Z87-G45 board and I am attempting to connect a second SATA HDD. Each time I connect the second disk and then power up the workstation I get the following message:
Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key
The primary HDD is a WD 160GB drive and the secondary drive that I am attempting to connect is a WD 2TB drive. I am not trying to dual boot, I just need a second disk for a little more space available. I am not sure if there are some settings that would need to be changed in the BIOS, but I would think that by default I could connect a secondary HDD, and it would be recognized as such. Anyone else dealt with this or have any pointers? This is really driving me crazy.
I should note everything else with the workstation works perfectly, it's just when adding a second drive, it will no longer load windows 7 from the 160GB drive.

That is one reason this is driving me crazy, I have made sure that the 160GB drive is primary in the boot process. Is there anything else you can think of that may be causing this?

Here´s my problem.
I bought a SATA-Ultrabay-Adaptor to use it for a second HDD in the Ultrabay-Slot.
I bought the red marked SATA (see above) and put it in the left Bay. Therefor the Floppy-Drive had to go. But the A31 didn´t start - "Operating System not found".
I swapped the CD-Drive with the SATA-HDD-Adaptor. Now the laptop starts the way he should, but performance on the SATA-HDD is very poor. Only UDMA2.
I updated the BIOS and the Embedded-Controller but the problem still exists.

The Infos about my system came from "Everest Home Edition".
I too recognized that the SATA is identified as an IDE-HDD. But I thought that this is ok cuz the Adapter is SATA -> IDE.

The boot-HDD (PATA) is jumpered as master.
The SATA doesnt have any jumpers or pins where i maybe could put a jumper onto.

I would have tested another SATA, if i would have had one in hands. But i haven´t.

Thats what I thought first too. Thats why I bought a second one (see above) from another distributor.
But the problems remains the same.
BIOS-Settings
Boot-HDD is the built in PATA.
I excluded all other shown Devices in the Boot-Menu with the "!".
Another strange thing I found out today.
In the Device Manager the Hitachi SATA is shown as Device 0 at the Secondary IDE-Channel.
But I also have "Tune Up Utilities" for doing some other kind of things.
There ( under System Information -> Drives" the Hitachi SATA is shown as Slave Drive on the Primary IDE-Channel.
Now what the heck is going on there?
Is it possible to attach some pictures to my postings?

Second SATA Drive Read Only

Need some help:
I took my SATA Drive out of my Windows Computer (NTFS) 250GB, and put it into the second SATA bay of the G5. It had one jumper on the 3rd setting.
The G5 found it and it can read fine, but it is read only. nothing i do can erase, format, etc. Disk info says owner:no, permissions:only read, can be formatted:no, SMART Status not supported, pretty much locked. It shows up as a 232.9 GB WDC WD2500JD-00FYB0.
Any Suggestions on how to make writable/format? Is it a jumper issue?

If you attempt to use a NTFS formatted disk, upon starting up the Mac OS will prompt you to format the drive. Do not format the drive, doing so will erase the contents of the drive. If you have an NTFS formatted disk, you must use another method to transfer the data from the PC to the Macintosh".
Did you have this warning when you started up your G5 after installing the second drive ?
If yes you may have to shut down the computer, disconnect the second NTFS SATA drive, restart and shut down, reconnect and restart to reformat.
Just a suggestion.

SATA HDD installs Extra IDE controllers

Hi I have a problem, whenever my Maxtor Plus 9 SATA 120GB hard drive is present on the system windows will try to install 2 extra ide controllers. If these are allowed to be installed then windows will lock up when Autorun is used or if a new cd is inserted.
If i install windows on the SATA hdd then the controllers are already installed and I get the locking issue straight away.
I have configured the ATA controllers how it tells me in the manual for windows XP and it doesnt help, I have also tried to to configure it in all ways possible!
I also get this problem in win2k and win2003 web server.

Do you want XP installed on the SATA or IDE drive?
Either way, check the Bios settings Integrated Peripherals>>On-Chip IDE Config.
It should be like below(taken from FAQ):
Native Mode
"ATA Configuration: SATA Only or PATA only, depending on which you want to be the FIRST BOOT device!
S-ATA Keep Enabled: Yes if you chose PATA only
P-ATA Keep Enabled: Yes if you chose SATA Only
PATA Channel Selection: Both
Combined Mode Operation: PATA First/SATA First, depending on which you want to act as 1st Channel.
S-ATA Ports Definition: - P0-1st/P1-2nd or P0-3rd/P1-4th, depending on which you want to act as Master."
Having the 2 Primary and secondary IDE controllers in Device Manager is normal for these boards with the SATA ports enabled. I don't know why it's giving you grief. It looks like you don't use both your IDE channels. You can leave the unused one disabled in the Bios and this will eliminate one of the IDE controllers in XP.
I would also ensure that "ACPI APIC SCI IRQ" is enabled in BIOS>>Advanced Features BEFORE you install XP. This may help.
Finally, did you remember to install the Intel INF files immediately after the XP install and before any other programs?

How to mount second ntfs HDD?

I have two HDD in my PC, one for operating systems and the other for all the large files which is formatted with NTFS (for Windows compatibility). I already have ntfs-3g installed and can mount my other operating system partition, but I have no clue how to mount my second HDD in my PC.

Assuming you only have these 2 drives hooked up (no external drives etc), your second drive is likely /dev/sdb. You can get a partition list by doing as root:
fdisk -l /dev/sdb
Then run ntfs-3g /dev/sdbX where X is the partition number you want to mount.

Can I boot off the SATA HDD

I just put my computer together, and I am trying to install Windows XP pro. I only have a SATA HDD and would like for the computer to put the master boot record on this drive. As of now, every time I try to install XP it tells me that it cannot locate a hard drive. I assume that it is expecting an IDE HDD. Is there any way that I can use the SATA HDD to boot up my computer, or will I have to just buy an IDE HDD.

Yes, you can boot off the SATA drive. You will, however, have to 1st enable the SATA capability in the BIOS. Upon startup, get into the BIOS (usually press "F6" on startup), then step through the BIOS screens and you will see a place where you enable various IDE drives. You need to enable the SATA functionality. Instructions (albeit vague) will also be in your MB owners manual.

PS After you've formatted the SATA Drive & installed Win XP, you will need to again enter the BIOS and setup the BIOS to boot form the SATA drive. Right now, you are correctly booting off the CD to install Win-XP.

Replacement second internal HDD causing problems.

About a year ago I replaced my internal 500gb HDD in my MacBookPro8,2 with a SSD drive and moved the original HDD to replace the DVD drive.
I boot Mac OSX Lion from the SSD and this has been running perfectly since then, however I am now running out of space on the 500gb drive, so I replaced it with a 750gb drive.
So I brought a western digital WD7500BPVX drive.
Then using a external drive dock, I formatted it to journaled HFS+, and then cloned the 500gb drive using Carbon Copy Cloner.
When the clone was finished, I used Disk Utility to verify the disk, All Good.
I use the second drive to hold all my large media files and also a number of VMWare images, I tested these and all working.
I then put the drive into the macbook in place of the 500gb, and the fun began!
It boots up OK, but the WD disk is very slow to appear in the finder, also each folder you click on hangs with the spinning beach ball for 30 to 40 seconds.
If you keep clicking on different folders in the drive Finder eventually stops responding.
I opened up Disk Utility, tried to verifiy the disk and Disk Utility spins it wheels for a while then hangs.
I restarted and tried repairing the disk with Disk Utility but it says it can't unmount the drive.
Note, If I don't use the second drive the MacBook work fine.
So I then swapped the original 500gb drive back in, and put the WD750 drive back in the external USB dock.
I then verified the disk using Disk Utility and it passed, I have tried open files, and they work!!!
Could this be a problem because I cloned the disk rather than just copying the files??
Any ideas before I wipe the disk and start the 480gb copy again??

If your OWC Data Doubler bundle comes with a 6G drive, you should ONLY install that drive in the main drive bay and utilize the Data Doubler to re-task your existing drive or install a new 3G SSD or HDD in the optical bay. PRE-2011 models can utilize a 6G drive in the optical bay, but will do so at a reduced 3G (3Gb/s) speed.
Seems like I can't use this drive as it is a 6GB/s!!!

[SOLVED] Problem with second SATA drive

My laptop has two hard drive bays, and just recently I added a second SATA drive (moved it from my old laptop) to the extra bay.
Now, anytime the second hard drive /dev/sdb has any heavy disk activity, it appears to cause a shutdown of the SATA port for the first drive (/dev/sda)! Though the second drive is still fine, and I can still write to it until the system crashes from the root drive (on /dev/sda) being shutdown.
If I don't mount and use the second drive, the first drive works just fine, and I can pound it with traffic without issue.
I can reproduce this problem by copying large amounts of data to drive 2.

I have experimented, and found that if I turn off NCQ on the kernel command line in my bootloader (libata.force=noncq), that it takes longer before the problem occurs. Though, if I write enough to the second drive, it does still happen after a while, just greatly reduced its chances of happening.
Is it possible that the old drive (sdb) is causing the problem? I noticed that it is much noisier than I remember when the drive head moves around.
Another curiosity while I was trying to duplicate the problem:
- I start a large file copy from sda -> sdb
- At the same time in another terminal, I do "find / -print"
- When I hear the drive 2 head moving, it pauses the output of the "find" command.
Every time I hear the head move, I see the find output pause. Its almost like the drive seek on drive 2 causes the whole Sata controller to pause while the head moves. Very odd!
Anyone have any ideas? I think the next thing I will try is borrow a drive from another machine, and do the big write to it to see if I get the same results.

It appears my drive one really is failing. It was the first drive and not the second making the loud head seek sound. I borrowed another drive from a friend, and copied my drive one to it. No problems with the new drive in place.
