Mounting .dmg files?

Dear Forum,
Having imported the .dmg files from DVD.
I'm unable to install CS3 .dmg files on my Mac G5.
With the .dmg in the applications folder I double click on the .dmg file in finder. The file appears to mount. Then in finder Go I select computer and double click on the CS3 Icon. Then the setup Icon appears I double click on it and a window appears saying "System Requirements Error This software cannnot be installed because the file system of the OS Volume is not supported".
Assistance please.

O.K. I know this sounds weird.
I'm planning to do a clean install of Leopard with the Internal HD formatted with Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
There are 2 HD Icons in Disk Utility. 1. Mac HD 2. 149.1 GB Samsung SP1614C
When I highlight the Mac HD Icon in Disk Utility and select Erase the Mac HD reads as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) The only option highlighted if Erase Free Space.
When I highlight the 149.1 GB Samsung SP1614C Icon in Disk Utility and select erase the Samsung reads as Mac OS Extended (Case Sensitive Journaled) There are no options highlighted.
Can you explain that?

  • 10.4.4: Can't mount .dmg files or access iDisk

Shortly after updating to 10.4.4 I noticed that my daily automated backups (using Backup 3) weren't working any more. I also found that I couldn't access the iDisk via the Finder icon, or via the Go > iDisk > My iDisk option in Finder. I can still upload to my iDisk using iWeb.
I'm now also unable to mount .dmg files. When I open them in Finder or try to mount them using Disk Utility I get an error message saying that there are 'no child processes'.
What can I do about these issues? Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Solved , by installing the 10.4.4 combo update!

  • Files disappearing from mounted .DMG files

Hi, I've had this issue occur a few times in Tiger and I'd like to know if anyone else has experienced this and if there's a known workaround. Sometimes, when browsing a disk image, or, less commonly, a physical disc like a CD, files in the Finder will seem to disappear from the image/disk when clicked on. First the filenames will go, then the files themselves, and evidently those files then become unreadable in general as applications can't access them. I don't get any error messages; it's just like the filesystem on that disk eats itself away and vanishes. I can unmount the disk without any issue.
I'm having this problem right now with any disk image I mount on my XServe -- it goes through the "Verify" step just fine, shows up on my desktop, I can browse and even open files, but inevitably within a very short period of time the above occurs, and it becomes useless. I KNOW it can't be the .dmg file that's the problem, because if I share the .dmg over Personal File Sharing and mount it from another Mac, this problem does NOT occur. It's just on the one Mac hosting the files. Any idea what this could mean, and what could solve it?
Also, I know a lot of times a restart will cure this weird little glitches, but I would really like a solution, if you know what I mean... particularly on a server, I cannot afford to restart whenever I have a problem.

Sounds like you have run into a very strange, and unfortunately no uncommon, bug involving file systems from either servers or FAT 32 mounted external drives. See this discussion:

  • Cant mount .dmg file - gets error -4960

Ive downloaded Xcode 3.0 over wireless and had to do this in several "sessions" due to the large file size (approx 1.31 GB)
this downloading has taken hours and now for all my hard work in trying to get it - Im getting a -4960 error code when trying to mount this disk.
I searched ADF to see if a related problem has occured but if found no obvious hits.
Anyone else overcome this one ? I surely would love to avoid having to DL this bad boy again....

  • Can't mount dmg files, Applications button in sidebar automatically closes Finder, and Flash won't work in browsers

Although these problems don't seem to be related, they all started occurring at the exact same time. To reiterate
    1) Any time I try to mount a .dmg file, the setup window automatically closes
    2) Any time I go into Finder and click on "Applications" button in the sidebar, the Finder window automatically closes
    3) Flash player does not work in any browser
I have tried repairing permissions and this doesn't work.
    Can anyone help?

Have you repaired the Disk. You must boot into the Recovery HD to repair the disk. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1782

Hi, I am suing Mac Leopard 10.5.6..I download skype from its official website, and I can't mount the DMG file. I tried download it again and restart the computer but it doesn't work. It gave a reason: "Not recognized" for Image "skype 2.7.0.330.dmg"

    HI,
*" I am suing Mac Leopard 10.5.6..I download skype from its official website, and I can't mount the DMG file."*
    Apple doesn't write Skype software.
Try repairing disk permissions. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.

  • Can't mount .dmg files

I'm new to the Mac. I have "inherited" the machine I'm using from the prior users. It's running OS X 10.2. I have several .dmg files that I'd like to mount so that I can run the programs that they supposedly contain. So far I have succeeded in mounting these files ("volumes"?) only with the root (superuser) account. When I log out of that account, those volumes are gone, of course. I cannot mount these volumes with an "ordinary" admin account. When I try that, the system sort of "blinks" but nothing else happens. And the goal here is to give access to these programs to youngsters who will be using a non-admin account. My assumption here is that the problem lies with me -- not with the system.

I see that this thread has been going for several days so you may have already tried this, but I'll throw it out there just in case...
Occasionally (for me anyway) some part of the underlying mechanism that performs disk image mounting will just suddenly go south. I'll double-click a dmg file, it'll look like it's going to open but then nothing ever appears on the desktop. The only way to get it back in working order is to reboot...
... so if you haven't rebooted your machine recently try that and see if it makes any difference. If this doesn't help you might also want to use Disk Utility to do a "Repair Permissions" on your boot drive... it could be that a permission problem is not allowing the mounting tools to run for anyone except for root.
Upgrading to a more recent version of the OS is a good idea if you've got access to or the money for a newer version of the OS.
From what I understand about the wheel group it's basically more restrictive than the admin group. It's root's default group, but users with admin privileges are not in the wheel group (at least not in more recent versions of OS X). Use of the wheel group was slightly more prevalent in earlier versions of OS X and administrative users were members of both the admin group and the wheel group. But that's not true any more. Since at least 10.3 files with root/wheel ownership are typically those that admins can tinker with if they really need to but only after taking the additional step of using sudo to elevate their privileges.

  • Ever since I upgraded Lion, my iMac does recognize my Garmin devices or mount dmg files from Garmin. What could be wrong?

I get the error that no mountable file system exists. All other dmg files open. My MacBook Air works fine with the Garmins and Garmin files.

And, occasionally it will boot into open firmware.
Seems odd to me. All by itself? Did you press any keys?
I don't know what to do from here. I can still boot into os 8.6 with extensions off.
Most likely, you have a bad extension. They are in a folder called extensions What you need to do is create a new folder and move extensions to this folder. Move extensions to the folder in groups. try 1/2 first. Move back & forth between folders. See which extension is causing the problem. command + n to create a new folder
verify that you have the correct firmware.
Figuring out what level of firmware you have?
    1) Mac OS 9.x or 8.x, you need to use the Apple System Profiler.
    Apple -> Apple System Profiler
    2) Mac OS X, use the System Profiler.
    Apple -> About This Mac
click on the More Info... tab
    click on Hardware
    read the Boot ROM Version
    3) Open Firmware, boot into Open Firmware.
Power on your iMac while holding down commandoption+of
The first output line contains the firmware level. Mine reads:
    Apple PowerMac4,1 4.1.9f1 BootRom built on 09/14/01 at 13.18.04
    Copyright 1994-2001 Apple Computer Inc.
The 4.1.9f1 will be different on a 333 machine.
    What firmware do you need?

  • Can't copy files from mounted DMG. What's up??

So all of a sudden, I can't copy files from mounted DMG files. It's strange because if there is one file and I drag it to another location, like desktop, it won't copy. If I drag 2 files from the mounted DMG to the desktop one of them copies. If I drag 3, then 2 copy... it's always all but one of the files... never all of them.
I've tried repairing permissions but nothing works. I'm at a loss...
    thanks

Try holding option when you drag the files. This tells the mac to move the files to the desktop of your computer not the desktop folder of the DMG (usually a hidden folder)
If that doesn't work it may be that you need administrative privileges to move the files. Make sure you are logged on as as an administrator by selecting the account tab in system preferences and making sure it says "admin" under your user name. Log on to or create an administration account then try moving the file.
Hope this helps, let me know

  • CDs and dmg files failing to mount on an eMac; any suggestions?

    Dear all,
I have not posted here before and hope someone can assist please; I'm a long-time Apple user, having started with the Apple II and currently owning an iMac G5 and PowerBook G4.
Having obtained a G4 eMac, I discovered a serious software/hardware for which I can't find a solution. It is running OS X.2.8 which has an issue mounting .dmg and CDs. When I attempt to mount .dmg files, it reports the error message:
"FILE NAME failed to mount due to error 95. (no mountable file systems)"
All CDs will not appear on the desktop with the exception of the Apple Hardware Test CD. They do appear through Disk Utility but can't be mounted. I have tried apps such as "Mount" without success.
    Apple has recognised this problem:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106345
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107288
but none of the suggested remedies have worked for me. Various forums suggest solutions, a summary of which may be found here:
    http://www.macattorney.com/tutorial.html#anchor-diskimage
    but none worked.
I have also tried holding the "c" key with the Install CD but it won't mount.
Any suggestions please? I can boot with System 9 - as a last resort would it be possible to then delete key files from the OS X's "System" folder, following which I might be able to boot from the "Install" CD?
    Many thanks,
    Peter

They sometimes say you're better helping yourself!
I seem to have solved this after many hours of experimentation. I decided to hook up my iMac G5 (running 10.4.11) via a firewire cable. Having started the iMac, I followed the instructions for a target disk, connected the cable and fired up the eMac (hold "T" etc). Within minutes the eMac with its inserted CD could be seen on my iMac's desktop. However, I now needed to see if it worked the other way around - if I could somehow boot up with the eMac and use the iMac as the target disk, putting the CD into the iMac.
The eMac read the iMac's drive but unfortunately I could not see the inserted CD. Having then turned off the iMac, I left the firewire cable plugged in and then inserted the eMac's Install disk - to my great surprise the Install disk suddenly appeared on the eMac's desktop for the first time! I clicked the Installer which then announced it would start up from the CD. It duly did - and I managed to revert back to System 10.2, rather than the problematic Apple upgrade 10.2.8 which had been installed (and apparently caused the problems).
I'm trying to obtain a copy of 10.3 Panther, simply to run the excellent Elgato EyeTV.
    Fingers crossed!
    PJD.

  • Try to mount a dmg file -- Input/Output error

I have certainly searched thru postings, but I cannot quite find a solution.
[1] An external FireWire drive holds a lot of dmg files of application installers.
[2] Double-clicking some, not all, of them results in an Input/Output error.
[3] Toast is always able to mount them.
[4] When the error happens, an attempt to copy the dmg file onto the Desktop results in another error message "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "<name>.dmg" could not be read or written. (Error code -365)". At this point, clicking on OK brings up a Copy window which hangs. The only way out is to Force-Quit the FInder.
What should I do to rectify these issues?

    I appreciate your suggestions.
The external drive in question is OWC's Mercury Elite-AL Pro with FireWire 800 (2) and 400 (1) ports
It was purchased in February, 2008. Its original connection was thru FireWire 800 to my G5 Tower.
    [1] Ports
The G5 has only one FireWire 800 port, while the OWC enclosure has two.
So, I used the other FireWire 800 port on the OWC.
The same intermittent I/O error in mounting dmg files.
    [2] Cables
I tried another FireWire 800 cable with either of the two FireWire 800 ports on the OWC.
The same intermittent I/O error in mounting dmg files.
So, I switched the connection to FireWire 400 between my G5 and the OWC.
No I/O errors after trying to mount numerous dmg files.
    [3] MacBook Pro
I disconnected the OWC and connected it to a MacBook Pro's FireWire 800 port.
No I/O errors after trying to mount numerous dmg files.
From [1], [2], and [3] above, can I deduce that something is wrong with the FireWire 800 port on my G5 Tower? I thought that both FireWire 800 and 400 ports on the G5 Tower were controlled by the same chip.
    Please advise.

  • Unable to mount *.dmg's

After installing the latest Bluetooth Patch (obtained via Software Update) on my PowerBook G4 Ti running OSX 10.4.3, whenever I try to open any disk image file (*.dmg file), I get the following error:
    Warning
The Following Disk Images Failed to Mount
    Image
    filename.dmg
    Reason
    no mountable file systems
I've tried several *.dmg's, all with the same result.
Also, the Disk Utility doesn't seem to report any issues with the actual *.dmg...I am able to view the partitions within the images.
In fact, after clicking Mount from within the Disk Utility repeatedly, the *.dmg file occasionally will mount.
Additionally, opening the same exact *.dmg files on my other macs running OS X 10.4.3 works fine.
I have booted off the OS X 10.4 DVD and repaired permissions without any luck.
Also, there are no errors on the drive according to the Disk Utility.
I was able to mount *.dmg files immediately before installing the bluetooth patch (witch was applied successfully)
Also, attempting to mount the same *.dmg files in Terminal causes that bash session to hang.
    I have no issues with mounting CD's/DVD's, HD's, or Network Drives...only *.dmg's.
Anyone have any ideas? I am stumped.
    PBG4Ti,iMacG5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I have had a number of issues after the 10.4.4 software update:
    1. Safari windows won't close by clicking the red X
    2. Can't mount disk images
    3. Can't launch applications from the Finder window (Finder re-launches itself when I click on any application...not even double-click, single-click)
All issues went away after I downloaded the 10.4.4 combo patch, used Disk Utility to burn the image to a CD (I had to drag the Disk Utility.app to my desktop and then launch it since I couldn't do that from the Finder window.), and then ran the package installer.
    Good luck!

    See this discussion at MacFixit.
I did try extracting the package, and it worked as advertised. I selected a firewire drive as the destination. Just tried using this method to extract Firefox from its .dmg and the results were a little strange (the drive acquired the Firefox icon and window displayed the way the Firefox virtual drive would display when mounted). See this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4397173
    and this one:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4948821
I think you should download the COMBO 10.4.10 update for your machine, use the method described in the discussions above to extract the package to a firewire drive, the run the updater on your startup drive and see if that fixes the problem.

  • Copy file from mounted DMG to the Applications folder?

I'm wanting to copy file (application) from a mounted DMG to the Applications folder. Something like:
