Mounting Firewire drive over Network?

So here's the deal:
I have an external hard drive (FireWire 400) which is currently connected to an iMac G4, but I am unable to mount the volume over the network and access it via WiFi on my MacBook. In other words, it does not appear in the list of mountable drives when I use the "Connect to Server" funtion of the finder. However, mounted DMG's do appear in the list - I find this to be strange.
Has anyone found a route around this? Is it even possible?
Setup (Details):
-The iMac is connected via a terrestrial network. [iMac > Hub > Modem (DHCP server, WiFi base station)]
-The MacBook is connected via an 802.11g WiFi signal. [MacBook > Modem (DHCP server, WiFi base station)]
-The hard drive is plugged into the iMac via FireWire, and is mounted on the desktop, as it always is.
-System preferences has all but "Xgrid" checked in the Sharing Pane [Both iMac and MacBook]
Thanks a bunch,
Gus

trying checking or unchecking the "Ignore Ownership
on this volume" box when you "get info" (file menu)
on the firewire drive.
I don't seem to have this option. It sounded promising, nonetheless... The Disk Utility also doesn't mention this.
Does it matter that it's a FAT32 volume? I hadn't thought to include this initially... If it does, and it's not possible, then I can give up, as I don't have another drive to back up to and reformat the one I'd like to use. Perhaps this will result in finally getting a dreamy LaCie drive... =)

  • Mounting USB drive over network

    Hello,
I'm working through an issue that I don't quite understand, I think. Here's my setup.
    iBook G3 running 10.4.7
    iMac G4 running 10.4.7
Airport Express (both computers connecting wirelessly)
My Book external USB 250Gb Drive connected to the iMac G4
I'm trying to access the My Book drive with the iBook using the "Connect to Server" selection on the "Go" finder menu. I type in the local IP of the iMac and it asks me how I want to connect. (Guest or Registered)
I choose registered, and use the username and password of the admin account on the iMac. It presents me with the user folder and the hard drive volume as well as any disk images that I might have loaded (a downloaded .dmg, for instance) but the USB drive never shows up in the list of volumes to mount.
I downloaded Share Points and added the drive to the list of shared volumes, then restarted the iMac, but it still does not come up in the list when I try connecting to the iMac from the iBook. I'm not real confident that I have Share Points set up correctly, I haven't spent enough time to wrap my head around exactly what that software is trying to do.
Any ideas as to where I've gone wrong?
Is there a better way to go about doing this?
It's a hassle to switch the drive back and forth to either machine as I want to work on one or the other. All the cords limit mobility on the laptop as well.
I should like to leave the drive connected to the iMac and use the files with either computer.

  • Add firewire drive to network

    Hi,
I've got two emacs connected together via an ethernet router. File sharing is on. I both emacs can see each others sharing folder on the desktop and iTunes music sharing also shows up in both emacs.
I've just added a la cie firewire drive and I am trying to get one of the partitions which is on my desktop to be available to the other emac. But I can't work out how to do this. I've changed the permissions to owner/system and everyone has read/write but that didn't help.
    Any help appreciated

    Hi,
Okay, the best way to do this is to first go to the Finder. Then, Connect to Server from the Go menu. When the Connect to Server window appears, click browse and double-click on the other eMac's name. Now, you can log into the other eMac just as you would if you were physically on it. After you type in your name and password, click connect and select the volumes you wish to mount. (In your case, you would choose a partition of the firewire drive) You should now be able to access everything on your firewire drive through your local network.

  • Mounting Firewire drives

If I have two external Firewire drives connected in series, one to another, and eject the first drive, will the second drive stay mounted and show on the desktop?

This is the FW info, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2952
    Repeater function
The built-in repeater functionality on Apple computers with two or more ports allows FireWire data to pass between external devices through the computer. This repeater functionality is available even when the computer is in sleep mode or turned off, provided that it is connected to AC power. On a portable computer running on battery, in sleep mode, or powered off, the repeater functionality is provided if at least one FireWire device supplies power to the computer via the FireWire cable.

  • Not able to connect to firewire drive on network

Hey there knowledgeable people I'm having problems connecting to a firewire drive on a network at home any help greatly appreciated. here's the set up.
G5 has 5 firewire drives daisy-chained together and there's also a lone USB drive attached to it as well. G5 is plugged into (via eternet) an eternet hub. my powerbook is also plugged into the network via the hub. I can see/access all the drives on the G5 (including the USB) but there's one firewire drive that I can't see (it is formatted FAT32, is that an issue?). I've tried plugging it into the G5 on its own without going through the daisy-chain but still nothing.
any thoughts as to why? oh and both computers are running 10.5.2
    cheers, Julian

Never mind my question any more. I reformatted the drive in question to Mac Journaled and presto it shows up on the network no probs.

  • Sharing external drive over network - problem

    Hey guys,
I searched the forum, but nothing posted to other threads helped.
I want to share a LaCie external USB drive over my network. It consists of two macs: a mac mini and a macbook running OSX 10.4.9.
The external drive is formated in FAT32. I enabled sharing in the system pref. but I don't see it when trying to connect. I installed SharePoints and shared it from there, still nothing. I tried connecting using the "afp://..:" stuff, but I get an error message, saying I cannot connect.
    Got some ideas?

    Thanks for your reply
Did you use the little "Show File System Attributes" yet?
    Yep, it's r&w
Did you use the enable Windows(smb)Sharing to Shared?
    Yes
    Did you add Users yet?
Yes, my username which i use to connect is added.

  • Can't connect/mount firewire drive wirelessly

My G4 tower has all my firewire drives connected to it. I usually connect to the drives wirelessly from my macbook pro. For some reason, there's one drive that will not mount, although it appears on the G4 desktop just fine. Getting info on the drive reveals that it's a MS-DOS (Fat-32) file system, and for whatever reason, I can't change the ownership/permissions on it as with other drives.
Any ideas of things to try?

This program you recommend is fugly and complicated...
You should see the other way to do it!
    Most likely...
When the 1st screen comes up, look for the Browse button, select the FAT drive, give it a Share Name, click the Windows (SMB) sharing bar & select Shared , enter your admin PW, click on "Show File System Properties", check Inherit Permissins, give the rights you need...
Any more questions after you Update Share...

  • Cannot mount external drive on network when no user logged in

We have a few workstations on our network that have multiple accounts for users in order to preserve preferences, etc. An external hard drive attached to the each workstation, holds work done on that station by the different users. When all users are logged out, the external drive does not appear as a mountable device when trying to log into the workstation from another computer; only the internal drives are seen and mountable.
Is there a way to make the external drive visible and available for mounting over the network when no user is logged in? The external drive is set to ignore permissions for that drive in the get info window.
Additionally, when a user is logged in to the workstation and someone tries to log in over the network to access the external drive, the drive is sometimes available over the network and other times not. What causes this inconsistency?
    thx, j

You really want to format it HFS+ wiyh GUID Partition scheme to ensure your data transfers correctly...
    How to format your disks...
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/partitioningtiger.html
(On IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)
Not sure if that'll make it see it or not, but your data will be better. Besides, you should be able to install to that then & maybe boot from it to ease matters.

  • How do I get a package to mount (for guests) over network - so confused.

Folks we've got a 10.3.9 server I am trying to develop. I am trying to get a Filemaker Pro installer package available over the network so users can install it without giving them the license key - per the Filemaker instructions.
The folder that contains the installer also has a file that contains user and license key info for the installer to use.
Only when I log in to the sharepoint (a folder that contains the installer and serialization file) does the installer icon show up properly and allow me to install it over the network locally. If I log in as guest, the icon comes up as a genereic blank icon and I can't do anything. I can't figure this out. All the users need is for the package to mount on their desktop, this way they can't get access to or see the assisted installation file the installer uses.
Any ideas folks. I've tried various combinations of access and sharing settings. Nothing seems to work.
    OS X server 10.3.9

If it is a wifi only, you look for free wifi connections at cafes, hotels, etc.  If it is a cellular model you pay a carrier for a data plan which will give you access to the internet just like a cell phone.

  • Why my mawerick reboots every time when I try to mount afp drive over VPN ipsec?

After Mawericks update there has been a bug that prevents using afp file sharing with ipsec VPN. Mawerick will reboot every time when I try to choose folder to view. VPN connection and user authentication works fine until I have to choose which folder to mount. Any other VPN action like common web browsing doesn't cause any problems. It's only afp.
When I view logs I will find this one. It indicates that there really is some low level problem in drivers.
Question is: How I can fix this?

  • Issues sharing win 7 drive over network to mac

    Hi guys,
So i installed a new hard-drive in my HTPC today running win 7. All has been going fine until i attempted to share the drive, all appears to have been set-up correctly on the windows side (enabled sharing on the drive etc)
However when i attempt to connect to the drive it comes up with a message saying:
    Connection failed
You do not have permission to access the server 192.168........etc
I have two drives that i am trying to share over this network, the first one has been shared for about 6 months and has been working fine, my mac can see it and get files off of it perfectly. I can still connect to this drive now aswell.
It's just this new drive thats causing the issues. Im trying to connect using a registered user
    Any ideas, thanks.

My bad, I linked to the wrong site on that blog. The one you want is How to Share Windows 7 Files With OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard.

  • Problem sharing FAT32 drive over network

I have a mac mini running Mac OS X Server 10.4.11. It has three external drives connected to it (two running firewire and one usb).
The first firewire (HFS+) is visible throughout the network and appears in the sharing section of Workgroup Manager. The other firewire (FAT32) and usb (FAT32) are seen on the desktop of the server and there is no problem reading and writing to them but they don't show up when I want to add them as a sharepoint. Is it not possible to share a FAT32 drive? Permissions on these drives are correct and read, write access is enabled.
I have a MBP and a Powerbook G4 on the network which need to access files on the FAT32 formatted drive and backup to them as well. Any help in this matter is appreciated.

Are the sharepoints you're seeking here using AFS or SMB services, or a mixture?
Any Windows boxes in the mixture? If not, have you tried reformatting one of the drives as HFS+ and exporting that, if you don't need the FAT volume structure? (FAT32 is really "FAT28" internally, but I digress.) If you can run HFS+ and export as AFS and it works for your needs, that's a path out of here.

  • Slow to mount firewire drive.

I just bought a 200 gig firewire harddrive off of ebay and it takes about 2 minutes for it to mount. I plug it in and the activity light blinks for a while before it finally shows up. It doesn't take as long when it is connected with USB but I would rather use FireWire because it's better. Does anyone have any ideas why this would take so long.

My friend I had the exact problem.
I had the maxtor One touch II I used it like one year after warranty expires the contoller chip gone.
probablly thats the problem you have or some thing different than mine.
Somethimes system cant recognize the external drive for a moment. Unplug the Firewire cable or USB cable and re-plug it. That could working for me.

  • Sharing firewire drive over smb

I have an external Lacie FW400 drive I'm using as a media drive. I need to be able to access this drive from other computers (both windows and linux) via smb.
The Lacie is connected to my Powermac, and is mounted on my desktop. I can access my home folder on the powermac via smb from either linux or windows machines, but the Lacie doesn't show up in my /Users/username/Desktop folder over a smb connection. I am unable to figure out how to access files stored on the Lacie.
Anyone done this before and care to share how they did it?

Answered my own question. Found Share Points application and prefs pane.
    That did the trick!

A couple of days ago I was swapping out my monthly firewire(800) backup to put the daily one back in place and my daily firewire backup drive will not mount. I've tried swapping out the cables, tried USB and Firewire400 with no avail. I tested the drive on my G5 and whapaa it mounted right away and the data is readable. For some reason my Xserve ignores it. I checked that the lock is in the unlock position so that's not the issue. I ran an xrdiags test last night and it came out fine. I also applied all of the latest updates. HELP!!!
Not sure if this is related, but my Xserve has begun to ignore my KVM switch so I have not direct keyboard/mouse connection. What could be the problem?
The backup drives are Western Digital My Books.

Problem fixed. Follow the instructions on this KB article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338
So if you ever have these symptoms, follow the instrucions above, it works like a charm.
    Thanks for your input DP.
