Mounting Group Folders

Wondering if Snow Leopard machines have issues mounting (connecting) group folders to Lion Server? Has anyone had any issues.
I just finished setting up a new Lion Server and currently my Snow Leopard Machines are having issues mounting the group folders, I believe all the permissions are correct. All that shows up in the users dock is a question mark, even have tried to connect via an admin account with zero luck, keep on getting connection failed.
Anyone else have any similiar issues? Does Lion and Snow Leopard play nice together?
Had no isses last year with the same set up minus the Lion Server.
Thanks for any input

  • Group Folders

I have a Mac OS Server Running 10.6.2 with around a 100 users and 6 workgroups. I need to create group folders that will only be shared via Apple Based workstations. This folders need to have read/write for all registered user. I also need this folders to mount and be stored in the dock for all users. Essientally I want group folders and I want a folder per workgroup.
    Thanks

I'll assume that your Macs are all bound to your OS X Server, and that by workgroups you mean Open Directory groups. (Let me know if this is not the case!)
In Server Admin click on File Sharing > Volumes > Browse. Navigate to where you want the group folders to exist (potentially the pre-existing Groups folder at the root of the hard drive). Click "New Folder" to create the folder. Then click "Share" to make the folder a share point. In the lower half of Server Admin click on "Share Point" (while your newly created share is selected in the upper part) and set it to only allow AFP (this will restrict it to being used with Macs, like you want). Once you've done that, click "Permissions," click the + button, and drag the folder's group under "ACL." Set that group to read & write access. At this point you will have a share for a particular group in which all group members have r/w access. (Make sure to click "Save" whenever prompted)
Now, to get them to show up on the users' dock: In Workgroup Manager, select one of your groups, click Preferences, then Dock, and check the box next to "Add group folder." Click save and you're all set!

  • Group Folders not being created

    Hi folks,
i think this is a simple question: i got Mac OS X 10.4.4 Server with OD and Mobile Homes configured. I set up some custom Groups but the Group Folders are not being created automatically. I think there is a terminal command to do this. Does anyone know that command?

    Is it the CreateGroupFolder command?

  • Auto Save & OS X Server Group Folders

I just discovered that auto save enabled applications like Text Edit cannot save to /Groups directories on OS X Server.
I have two local users David and Celia that are members of the local group davidendcelia. This group has the group directory /Groups/davidandceilia. All members of the group are able to save and edit files in the group folder regardless of who created the file. This is just what is wanted. It is not possible to save a file with Text Edit into the group directory. When you try to navigate to the group directory it is not accessible.
The /Users/Shared file will work with Text Edit, but it does not allow one user to edit a file created by another user.
Is there a way to make the group folders work with auto save enabled applications?
These are the permissions on the file.

  • I still don't see where to DELETE or even add names to established group folders.

i have just downloaded thunderbird and imported my address book. i want to delete some old group folders and add some names to other old group folders. all the options to delete are greyed out.
when trying to add a name to a group, i can add it and click ok, but when i go back to it, it isn't there.
also, a new group i put together is stored under the "personal address book", but will not save into a new group. the folder shows up - twice in fact under the "Mac OSX Address book" with no addresses in either of them...AND, i can't delete them or a few old groups that i no longer want.
i am a newbie and not that computer savvy, so please no complicated techy instructions. i'd rather you just shoot me.

For a long time, Thunderbird has had read-only access to the mac address book. ISTR reading that this has changed recently, but as a non-mac user, I can't check for myself. "Read only" means that Thunderbird can't modify the mac address book.
However, you ''should'' be able to store Mailing Lists in the Personal Address Book. If in general you can't make any changes to an address book, that might indicate the underlying data file is corrupted. The usual way to repair it is to export its contents to an LDIF file, delete the original broken address book, then re-create it by importing from the LDIF file.
Since the Personal Address Book and Collected Addresses are "special" and hard-coded, you won't be allowed to delete them. To remove either of these, you need to locate your profile folder, close Thunderbird and delete abook.mab for Personal Address Book, and history.mab for Collected Addresses.

  • Issue with Group folders on XServe

    Hi,
I have an Intel Quad 2.66Ghz XServe with 10.4.10 Server installed. I am trying to set up two different groups. There are two folders on the Shared RAID HD. Group A need to have access to both folders, whilst Group B has access to only one of them.
I have set up two different groups, and which users apply to which group. I have then set up the shraes on the HD, and with the shares I have applied which group has access to which folder.
But for some reason when I log on from the workstations, even though I have set up what they have access to, both Group A and Group B have access to all the files.
Is there something I am missing.
Under Sharing I go the the folder and then under the Access pane on the right for the Group I assign the group folder and give it Read and Write Access, and then, for the other group folder I do the same.
There must be something I am missing.
If someone could please maybe give me a detailed explanation, I can see where I have gone wrong.
    Thanks in advance,

    I also have another issue,
I am moving everything across from a previous Mac OS Server.
I have imported all the accounts and groups.
I noticed under the sharing tab, when I go to the protocols tab, on the previous OS Server could choose inherit permissions from parent, but on the new XServe, this option is greyed out, how is it possible to check this tab.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Apps are not staying in the group folders,I typed a Bios code thing online into my search bar and now all my apps are not staying in the right places

Hello I'm having an issue with my iPhone I've typed a code of some sort into my search Barr to find hidden files , but now every one of my apps will not stay in their respective groups of folders...is there anyway to undo this code string ....

I seem to have fixed it by putting <div  class="clearfloat"></div> after the navigation bar?

  • Time Machine for shared group folders

    Hi,
I would like to set up time machine for a shared group folder on the server. I would like users to be able to use time machine from clients to see backup history of files in the group folder. Is this possible? How?
    Gregor

+...would like users to be able to use time machine from clients to see backup history of files in the group folder. Is this possible? How?+
Yes. This is possible, but it isn't touted as one of the features that sells Mac OS X Server. The advertised Time Machine server solution is to host an AFP share point on the Mac OS X Server system which clients then use as a Time Machine backup destination, similar to Time Capsule.
But, what I think you're going for is something like this: You have a share point where multiple users can read and write, and you'd like the server to be able to backup that share point via Time Machine, but also allow its clients to connect and see those backups. This is kind of like "Time Machine for a sharepoint." Again, this isn't really touted, but it's possible. Here is an example which shows you how.
For starters, let's say that your server's disks are well-organized. You have one volume for the server's operating system (Boot), one volume for the share points (Data), and one volume for backup (Backup). Other scenarios could work, but this configuration will make this how-to easier to understand. Let's also agree that your server's hostname is junglecat.amazon.private.
Let's say that the share point (group folder) that we want backed-up is at /Volumes/Data/Group-Folder on the server. Let's also agree that your group members already have access to this folder - e.g. it is already a share point with an ACL entry that grants the group members read and write access.
You'll need to configure Time Machine on the server itself first, just as if it were a client. Open System Preferences, and use the Time Machine pane to choose the Backup volume as the server's backup destination. You'll want to make sure that only the contents of the Data disk (the disk housing the Group-Folder) are backed up. Skip anything on your boot disk, as you're using Time Machine to back up just the share points. Let the server at least start its first backup, which will create the following directory:
    /Volumes/Backup/Backups.backupdb/junglecat.amazon.private
...where the server's Time Machine backups will be stored.
Now use Server Admin's File Sharing section to make the /Volumes/Backup disk a share point, with these properties: Share the folder via AFP, and enable it as a Time Machine backup destination. (Your clients will not really be backing up to the folder, but they will be needing to see it as a place that Time Machine can keep a backup. This creates the .com.apple.timemachine.supported file on the share point.)
It's also a good idea to disable guest access and add an ACL deny rule to the share point (/Volumes/Backup) which denies delete and delete_child for everyone:
    chmod +a "everyone deny delete,delete_child" /Volumes/Backup.
This prevents people from storing other data next to the Backups.backupdb folder. The Backups.backupdb folder already contains an ACL deny rule that limits its access to read-only.
Back on a client, mount the newly-shared Backup share point. The client's Time Machine may ask permission to use this as a backup location (because it was defined as such), but don't let it. The important thing is that the client recognized it as a backup location.
To browse the server's Time Machine history, the client must right-click on the Time Machine icon in the Dock (or use the Time Machine menu extra) and choose "Browse Other Time Machine Disk," where the user can choose the server's backup volume. Now the client can go back in time on the server, star-field and all. If the user needs to restore a file, Time Machine will ask him/her where to save the restored copy; it will not overwrite the copy on the Group-Folder share point.
    Hope this helps!

  • Is the naming convention of new groups (folders) modifiable?

This is nowhere near being a big deal, but I thought I'd ask anyway.
Currently, the default name of a folder is "Group 1".
When we make a copy of this folder, the default name is "Group 1 copy"
Is there a toggle somewhere to make Photoshop call it "Group 2" instead of "Group 1 copy"?
I ask because I almost always create new folders via copy instead of "create new group".
PS: I'm aware we can rename them after the fact.

I am aware that if you copy something, it is a copy (thanks for the confirmation, though). My question had to do with whether or not we have any control I am unaware of on the default naming conventions within Photoshop (like we do when converting RAW files to PSD, for instance).
Clearly the answer is no by now, unless someone stops by and tells us otherwise.

  • Is there a way to organise Ipad apps into groups (folders) e.g. English, Maths, PrePrimary etc. in Itunes for syncing purposes?

I work in a school and have a 32 bay syncing, recharging cabinet. We are starting to get a lot of apps and need to orgaise them better. I know I can organise them into groups on an individual ipad but can I do this organisation in itunes and then sync this organisation to the 32 ipads in the cabinet.

Sorry did quick reply on your title. I'm not sure about iTunes. If you have them all attached to one apple I'd, then yo u can sync all of them the same up to 10 devices. Once you create one then you can sync the rest the same with the same folders. I'm not sure on how education works. You might be able to do more than 10 per id. I'm out of my league on that ?

  • [SOLVED] A File Manager That Can Group Folders and Files like Fences

I want to create a custom desktop environment in Arch Linux and I'm looking for a file manager that is similar to Windows Explorer in terms of features and functionality and can group files and folders into fences like Stardock Fences does for the desktop in Windows.
If such a feature isn't available then I, at least, want to group both files and folders into individual groups based on custom parameters and not just Date or Size.
Is there any File Manager in Linux that can fulfill my requirements? If not, is there any file manager which can be extended (by scripting or programming) easily to include the features that I'm looking for?

ANOKNUSA wrote:The important thing to keep in mind here is that Windows Explorer is the foundation for the entire Windows interface. If you've ever seen the exploere.exe process die for any reason, you know what I mean. That's the reason it's able to utilize functionality like Fences. In order to get the same kind of functionality in Linux, you'd need a very similar setup. KDE + Konqueror are what come closest from my experience, since the Plasma interface actually has widgets built in that do what you want, but if you use KDE then you use KDE. Full stop. KDE is highly customizable, but only if you use its environment and parts.
Nah. I don't wanna use KDE. I've heard that it's the most resource hungry DE out there.
OK, maybe not something like fences in a file manager but I, at least, want to be able to group files AND folders (within a folder or a directory) under a single parameter and that parameter can be custom and not just pre defined like Date and Size.
Huh. I'm down to Konquerer, like you suggested, and Dolphin. Can I use either as a stand alone file manager in a custom DE in Arch without using KDE?

  • Group folders when using Lion server machine as a client

    Hi,
I want to use the server we use in a small lab as a client as well. Most of the collaborative work is done in a group folder, which works perfectly on all clients.
However, when I log into the OD on that sever on the server itself (as a OD user) the logon procedure correctly finds that it should mount the group folder.
However it also sees that the shared folder is a local folder, so it suggests (complains) that I should use the file locally instead.
This is all wery well, but I have applications where the config items require a path to be specified. This path now differs between computers (server computer v.s. pure clients) which creats a problem for me.
So, how do I make the server (loop) mount itself as if it was a pure client (and not complain about it)?
    Please help me.

  • Grouping folders/content  in Snow Leopard

I would like to know if anyone knows how to group content within folders like my movies or documents by date or in groups like in windows 7 or vista? Or if there is a appliacation you can download to manage the folders in snow leopard in this way?

    Other options.
In the Finder with a Window open you can go to the View Menu and Show View Options.
In here you can add ticks to various boxes to show columns in any List type view (anything but Icons and columns - meaning Coverflow and Lists).
You can then highlight any column to reorder the list in that manner.
This includes Labels which can colour an item.

  • Mail Accounts - Grouped Folders?

    Hi,
I'm probably being a biff, but can someone help me, please?
I use Mail as my email client and have 3 IMAP accounts set up.
In the Mailbox list (on the left), under MAILBOXES, there are Inbox and Sent folders and subfolders in these for each account.  Simple :-)
Howwever, under the SMART MAILBOXES are listed ON MY MAC (which is where I move all the messages from an specific person to, so that's OK).
Only two of my three accounts are shown below that.   My main account shows the IMAP folders, but the other account only shows the Drafts, Sent Items, Spam and Trash folders.  These folders aren't shown in the main account.
The settings for all three acounts are exactly the same.
I seem to recall that these folders were previously grouped together, like the Inbox and Sent folders.  Did I dream this, or if not, can someone tell me how to set Mail up to show these folders grouped together, please?
I could send a screenshot to show what I'm trying to explain, but I'm reluctant to share my folders with everyone!
    Thank you

    Hi  Barney-15E,
That was really helpful, thank you.
It worked for every folder except the Spam one - which I still can't delete!
    Thanks again,
    Pete
