Mounting second hard drive

How do I mount my second hard drive?  I know to mount a cd it's mount /mnt/cdrom what path can I use to get to hdb?  or is it hd1?  what's the deal here?  I feel real dumb but I'd really like the extra 250gb of space.  thanks folks.

mrblondeisback, you have to understand some things :
There is a file /etc/fstab in which you define the mountable devices at boot time, or their paths for later use ( for example you can use mount /dev/cdrom because an entry in this file like this exist :  /dev/cdrom      /mount/cdrom    ro 0 0 )
For details always read the man pages as they describe the best what has to be done.
you have to create a directory first of all for your mounted device, like /mnt/drive
then you can also manually mount a device, by specifying the device and the folder, or like i previously said, just the device's name and mount will search in fstab for the entry and use the options.
Tomk said to look in dmsg :
This means there is a log file (files) that tell what happens if you do something to the computer :
When you plug your drive in your usb port, kernel sends messages about it, and will tell wich device is used for your drive :
To follow what happens to the log file use this command :
tail -f /var/log/dmesg.log # tail is the command wich shows you the tail of a file, -f is to tell tail to follow the changes
Have fun !

  • Cannot find a mounting to install a second hard drive in my Qosmio x70-A

I have looked all over the internet and have gotten no where in my search for a mounting for the secondary hard drive bay in my laptop.  Anybody know where I can get one?
Also I've included pictures of the secondary drive bay and the primary bay.  From the looks of it I can't use the same type of mounting in the secondary bay as in the primary.

I have the same issue, and have found Toshiba support to be completely unacceptable on this.
After getting bumped around from sales to tech to sales because "we don't answer that question, you have to talk to the other guy", I finally got a "straight" answer from sales:
"Sir, we DO NOT sell that part, and therefore I CANNOT tell you a part or model number for the part you may need to install that second hard drive. The only thing you can do is talk to our parts supplier over at National Parts (1 800 524 8338) and ask them to provide you with the model numer or sell you the part."
At this point, I was annoyed, but thought that at least with a straight answer I could proceed.
After a very short hold time with National Parts, a very kind associate answered the phone and listened to my tale of woe. Unfortunately, she was unable to help and said:
"Unfortunately, sir, I have listed that while there is no caddy for the second hard drive slot on you X70-A specific model, there is supposed to be a mounting bracket. Unfortunately, we have been trying for MONTHS to have Toshiba give us the part number, spec, or any other information other than 'mounting bracket', and therefore I'm afraid we have neither a part to sell you nor a part number for you to go looking for one".
At this point annoyance is full-blown anger. How is it possible for Toshiba to make something that should be SO SIMPLE so VERY VERY VERY complicated and impossible.
"Sorry, if you didn't want to spring for the dual drives when you bought it, you're hosed forever sucker." Does not seem like an excellent customer service strategy.
This was the FIRST Toshiba I'd ever decided to spend my hard-earned money on, and now it's a machine I can't upgrade because they can't get their act together with their parts supplier or in-house over a 3 dollar bracket?
    UNACCEPTABLE.
The pictures the original poster shows are exactly what I have, no need to add more o fthe same.
    ANY help, Toshiba?

  • Second Hard Drive Caddy (Mounting Rails) - 3000 K100

I need to install a second 3.5" hard drive in my 3000 K100 Desktop.  Unfortunately I dragged my feet and called technical support just after my one-year warranty ended.
Is there 1) Any way to mount the hard drive without one of those plastic caddies or (preferably) 2) a place I can buy one or two of those plastic caddies?
I have been searching everywhere on the internet and cannot find where to buy these or even an alternative.
    Thanks,

I have a Lenovo 3000 k100 that I am installing a second SATA hard drive.
I found the blue drive rails on eBay at --
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270468028776&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME%3AB%3AEOIB...
You will also need 90 degree SATA power and data cables.  Also on eBay at --
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270463824414&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME%3AB%3AEOIB...
I have the rails, but the SATA connectors hit the cover without the 90 degree angle. I ordered the new cables just today.

  • How do I access new second hard drive?

Hi! I am newbie, I am sorry if this a dumb question...
How do I access my second hard drive?
    This is what I have:
    SparcStation5 170Mhz, 192MB memory.2HDD (one 4.3GB w/ OS, second Hdd 4.3GB)
I had my sparc working with Solaris 8 just perfect!
I added the second hard drive, no problems, I formatted the HDD from withing Solaris OS, (I can probe-scsi from openBoot promt and it showes OK), everything is OK so far, I can see the send hard drive using format, I can partition it and create slices on it, everything seems to be OK, I have no problems making partitions and everything on that Hdd. But when I try 'ls', I can't see anything on that disk, any suggestions? I tried several ways from my manual/book, including mount and it reads 'no acces point on mount' or somthing like that.
this is what I see from format command:
disk 0. (seegate 4.3GB.....) this is my new hard drive (already formated and partioned, I created a new partition /usr with 3.75GB on partition 6. Partition 3 is used by the hdd with a totoal of 4GB . this shows as c0t1d0
disk 1. (SUN4.2GB) this is the hard drive with the OS Solaris 8. this is c0t3d0
    Am I missing something?
    Thanks!
    Murillo

    hi there ...
    read below--
Find out the address of the drive
    STOP+A
At the OK prompt, type probe-scsi. This will list all scsi devices on the system. Find the new drive.
Type boot -r so the OS will see the new drive.
Login as root and type format. Pick the new drive. The drives are listed as c(controller #)t(scsi id or target #)d(disk #). Label drive is required (it will tell you if the drive is not labeled).
Next, type partition. Partition the drive as required (always leave partition 2 as the whole drive as it is informational to the OS
Type print to list the current partitions. When you are done making changes type label
To return to the OS prompt, type quit twice
    newfs /dev/dsk/DRIVE-ADDRESS
    (ie c0t1d0s0) (controller 0 target(ID) 1 disk 0 slice(partition) 0).
mkdir directory, where directory is the directory you want to mount the drive on
    (ie, /disk2)
    mount /dev/dsk/DRIVE-ADDRESS directory
Add the new drive to your /etc/vfstab file.
    (ie. /dev/dsk/c0t1d0s0 /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s0 /disk2 ufs 1 yes - )

  • How do I use my second hard drive for storage, not back up?

Hi, I bought a second hard drive to store files (not back-up for my system), but when I moved some files over to drive two and then deleted the same files from drive one, they also deleted from the 2nd drive! Fortunately I could reverse the process and there was no loss, but what now? How do I disconnect the two so I can use the second as storage?
Thanks and happy Easter for those of you who celebrate it. Kate (Porter)

Whilst I normally drag files around, a copy and paste still should have created a replica on the destination drive.
That the second is mounted internally makes my describing it as an external drive inaccurate, but wouldn't cause the problem.
So that still leaves the scant possibility that the original source is itself an alias.
Was the copy and paste done in a Finder window or was it done via some other application's window?
I look forward to an update on this unusual event.

  • Installing a second hard drive in a G10-133

    Couple of questions for you...
I'd like to install a second hard drive in my G10-133. Specifically I'm looking at a second 80gig drive (MK8026GAX). Does anyone have experience of installing a second drive like this?
Secondly, I know where to buy the drive from. But, does anyone have any advice about the drive carriage itself (ie. the bit of kit which holds the drive in place in the bay)? Specifically, where can I get one?
    Cheers everyone.

    Hi Andrew,
Ignore Markus, you dont have to install the same size HDD in order for it to work. Your Qosmio shipped with an 80GB, you can put a 100GB if you like or a 20GB doesnt matter, aslong as you, as Markus correctly states you set the jumper correctly.
For the HDD to be fitted, you need the mounting brackets, try someone like Hugh Symons or CBC Computers, Google it for details.

  • How to add a second hard drive

I want to add a second hard drive, mainly because my server hosts a photo gallery and I would like to store those photos on a separate drive.  What is entailed in adding this second drive?
    -Thanks

Firstly, find if you want SATA or IDE.  Then make sure you have a free hole on the mobo for the drive, and spare in the case for it.  Then make sure your PSU can power it.  Then decide how much space you want and how much you want to pay.  Then buy, screw it in, and connect the ribbon cable and power cable.  Then boot, and it should come up in /dev.  Then partition, and make a filesystem, then mount.  Easy

  • Add a Second Hard Drive to a Pavilion 500-314 Desktop

I have just purchased a Pavilion 500-314 desktop and desire to add a second SATA hard drive from the computer it is replacing.  When I open the case I find four SATA connections but nowhere to physically mount the second hard drive.  The drive bay is large and basically empty with the included hard drive mounted to the drive bay cage.  There are no slots for additional drives.  When I called HP I was told this chassis supports only one drive even though it has four SATA connectors on the motherboard.  Is there an adapter that can be purchased to create additional slots or am I out of luck with additional internal drives?

    Hi,
Few weeks back, one user decided to go to a hardware store to buy brackets himself and problem solved. You may want to follow his method.

  • Installing a second hard drive in my HDX16 - Manual says yes, but I don't see a slot

    Hello,
My HDX16-1200 manual says I can support a second hard drive, however I opened up the computer and do not see a spot to mount the drive.
Does anyone know where the second disk gets installed?
    Thanks.

I've been finding some great instructions on how to install a second hard drive in my PowerMac G5, but been unable to find some instructions on steps after that that assist my low tech-intelligence quotient. I'm planning on getting a Western Digital 750GB Caviar SE16.
    Basically my questions are:
    1) Once I've installed a second SATA internal hard drive, do I have to wipe the entire contents of my first hard drive and reformat the Mac completely? Or can I just format that second hard drive and have it work seamlessly with my current configuration?
    2) I understand I can partition a second hard into more than one volume. I'd like to be able to use the second internal drive, but also have the increased reliability of RAID. Can I create a RAID array on that drive as well? How might I do this without screwing up?

  • Encrypt a second hard drive with ecryptfs

    Hey folks,
I already encrypted my home directory as describend in the wiki here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/EC … 8simple.29
    mount says
    /home/.ecryptfs/michael/.Private on /home/michael type ecryptfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,ecryptfs_fnek_sig=11111111111111111111,ecryptfs_sig=aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa,ecryptfs_cipher=aes,ecryptfs_key_bytes=16,ecryptfs_unlink_sigs)
MY GOAL IS: Encrypt a Folder "encrypted" on a second hard drive in my pc, that gets autodecrypted when i login with my login password on gdm. the partition on that hard drive is sdb1, just for future references
Long story short: I tried several ways to adapt the encryption of the home folder to the folder on sdb1. the wiki did not help me much with this (encryption was working but nothing like automaticaly decrypt on logon or smthg(.
then i found the ecryptfs readme file: http://ecryptfs.sourceforge.net/README and read the PAM MODULE section.
it points that i had to add my passphrase for the encrypted folder in sdb1 to the session keyring using ecryptfs-manager.
Then, log in as the regular
user. Manually add your passphrase to the user session keyring via the
    ecryptfs-manager utility.
i also added the line in my fstab:
    /run/media/michael/Seagate/.encrypted /run/media/michael/Seagate/encrypted ecryptfs user,noauto,rw,relatime,ecryptfs_sig=bbbbbbbbbbbbbbb,ecryptfs_cipher=aes,ecryptfs_key_bytes=16,ecryptfs_unlink_sigs
after that, i could easily mount the folder through nautilus or with the `mount -i /run/media/michael/Seagate/encrypted` command.
the bad thing is: after loging off and on again, the mount again didnt work until i added the passphrase for the sdb1 folder again to the ecryptfs-manager.
    Before adding the passphrase:
    michael@tyron ~ (@ ✹master)$ keyctl show
    Session Keyring
    18821945 --alswrv 1000 -1 keyring: _uid_ses.1000
    980991344 --alswrv 1000 -1 \_ keyring: _uid.1000
    809041303 --alswrv 1000 100 \_ user: aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
    1033993612 --alswrv 1000 100 \_ user: ?????????????
    after adding the passphrase
    michael@tyron ~ (@ ✹master)$ keyctl show
    Session Keyring
    18821945 --alswrv 1000 -1 keyring: _uid_ses.1000
    980991344 --alswrv 1000 -1 \_ keyring: _uid.1000
    809041303 --alswrv 1000 100 \_ user: aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
    1033993612 --alswrv 1000 100 \_ user: ???????????????
    367799740 --alswrv 1000 100 \_ user: bbbbbbbbbbbbbb
Where aaaaa.. is the key for my home dir and bbbbb... the key for the folder on sdb1 These keys are identical to the keys listed in fstab/mount.
(Phrases are both the same but the key differs, i think because of a salt or something)
The ecryptfs readmy also pointed, that i have to insert
    auth required pam_ecryptfs etc.
in pam.d/gdm-password, login and system-auth (like its documented in the arch wiki), what i already did for encrypting my home folder. but i double checked it.
now i'm lost - i thought with these pam modules, the decryption works automaticaly on system logon. it doesnt, but gives me a strange error message until i reenter my passphrase for sdb1 to the ecryptfs-manager
Can you tell me how to manage my problem or where my mistake is?
Tank you for reading this wall of text i really hope for any answers!
    Kind regards,
    --michael

A couple of questions which I wonder about:
    1. What is your fstab line for sdb1?
    2. Did you try to let PAM automount it on login via ~/.bash_profile as described in the readme? I am not sure it works, if you login and only mount manually afterwards.
    3. Which PAM mount options did you use? The ones from the wiki link directly or which one from this section? 6b?

  • Dual boot arch from second hard drive [SOLVED]

I have two sata hard drives connected.  Hard drive 0 has my working updated version of arch.
I'm trying to boot off the second hard drive that has an older installation of arch.  I have added this to my menu.lst of my first hard drive:
    # (2) Arch Linux 2.6.31
    title  Arch Linux 2.6.31
    root   (hd1,0)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/29523114-ab52-4a9b-b93f-e2da915c0dc1  ro vga=773
    initrd /kernel26.img
I have also tried using /dev/sdb1 on the kernel line with the same results.  The uuid is correct I am able to obtain that from /dev/disk/by-uuid/
this is definately where the vmlinuz26 file resides for that hard drive.  I can mount it and see it.
But when I choose this option, it tries to boot but then I get:
    kinit: init not found!
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
Pid: 1, comm: init not tainted 2.6.31-ARCH #1
What do I need to change?  Do I need to add something to that initrd line?  Thanks.

I had to change the uuid to that of the root partition on sdb (the second hard drive) even though I had a /boot partition on it (sdb1).  It is now working.
    # (2) Arch Linux 2.6.31

  • Adding a second hard drive. Should I use LVM?

This particular desktop station has one single hard drive with two ext3 partitions atm.
I read a little bit about LVM and I am wondering what I should do with that second hard drive as for a setting it up.  It will mainly be used to store media files with local network access.
Considering it is only one hard drive (500G) is it worth using LVM?

As always in Linux its all about what You want to do.
So as you read LVM is another abstraction layer between hardware and software. What affects a bit performance since file systems are not created on real partitions but virtual devices provided by LVM. As benefit you gain possibility to manage freely available disk space without necessity of using a partitioning program. Actually its not possible since such programs cant handle partitions created on LVM.
However please note that if you do not use LVM you can still manage your disk space using applications such as gparted. Of course only on those partitions that are not currently mounted.
So this solution (LVM) becomes very handy when you often have to reorganize your disk space (moving partition using partitioning program can be very time consuming) or you just want to forget about partitioning and disk usage calculations...
Personally I never used LVM because of this what I pointed out above. LVM gives flexibility in managing disk space but there are other ways to get it. Of course there are also users who cant live without it!
