Mouse 4 and marks - pros and cons with Mavericks

Hello,
I'm pretty new to mac but have had computers for many many years. However I've bought the latest iMac maxed out.
Pros and cons:
Pros: It's an Apple product. It great really and I love it. The only wonder I have is why they made the computer thinner and didn't install a true desktop graphic card in there. I guess it's because they don't want people to buy that computer instead of Mac Pro.
Cons:
1. I've been searching for a way for go back in a browser faster without trackpad/magicmouse. There is only thirdparty programs that I have to pay for that support Mouse 4, for example. Still don't understand why Apple have chosen not to support this. Atleast allow me to just drag the window like we do on the iPhone. Right now I have to either click the back button or right click and chose "Back".
2. When I'm in my Videos folder or any type of folder really. Let's say I have a folder with 10 movies in it. I open one, watch it and then close the player. I then can't see which video I just watched. The only way to see this is either to remember the videoname or open all videos again until I find it. In Windows, the video/file will be marked so I know which file I just watched.
3. iCloud service are very nice, but still a little hard to understand how it works. If I transfer all my pictures from my iPhone to my iMac using iCloud and then delete them all from my phone. Will they disappear on my Mac too? Since the systems are synced?

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

I want to purchase MacBook pro 13 but I cannot find any unit with Mavericks from any local NZ store.

    Mavericks is a free download.

  • Mac Pro 3,1 with Mavericks occasionally locks up before and after login

    Hi all,
My early 2008 Mac Pro running OS X 10.9.1 will lock up or freeze sometimes at the login screen and sometimes shortly after login.  Only once or twice has it froze up after it was running more than about 15 minutes or so.  When it freezes it usually happens within the first 10 minutes of login.  I upgraded from 10.8, then clean installed later with the same issue.  No beach ball, just a total freeze up with system fans still running but zero activity otherwise.
I have a GTX 285 for Mac installed and i got rid of nVidia's web driver when I did the clean install, same problem.
I moved my other operating systems onto separate internal disks and same problem.
Having a hard time isolating the cause, anyone else having the same issue?

  • Why is the Magic Mouse slow and impressive on Mavericks?

After upgrade to Mavericks, the Magic Mouse become slow and Impressive. This doens,t happened on Mountain Lion.
I did a clean installation and the batery of Magic Mouse is full!

Did you post from the system that has the problem? (Your "More System Details" list shows Flash 11.7 instead of 11.8 for some reason.)
This is some standard guidance that addresses the most common issues with Flash in Firefox. I'm sure you've seen some of it before, but just in case:
    (1) Make sure all recorders/downloaders that interact with Flash media are as up-to-date as possible, or disable them.
    (2) Disable hardware graphics acceleration in Firefox and in Flash ''(I see from your post that you've done this part)''
    (A) In Firefox, un-check the box here and restart:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > General > "Use hardware acceleration when available"
    (B) In Flash, see this support article from Adobe: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues
    (3) Disable protected mode (Windows Vista/7/8)
See this support article from Adobe under the heading "Last Resort": [http://forums.adobe.com/message/4468493#TemporaryWorkaround Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?]

  • Anyone with a Crucial MX100 SSD and problems with Mavericks?

    Hi there.
I carbon copy cloned my ex Intel X25M G2 160gb SSD to my new Crucial MX100 512gb SSD and installed it in my mac mini Late 2012 (i7 2.6ghz).
Never experienced before, now the system freezing up and getting the "spinning ball of death" for almost 10 seconds (maybe more) and than the system becomes normal. After few time (don't know maybe two minutes, maybe twenty, it depends) again freezing up and getting the "spinning ball of death".
Are there anyone with a Crucial MX100 SSD that experience my problem? Solution? Apple Hardware Test on the mac mini say 'no hardware problem at all' (I went for the long test during the night). Maybe the clone process had some unknown problem even though I did it many times in the past and never experienced something similar.
Do I have to re-install to have the answer? What do you think?
    Regards,
    Claudio.

There's a firmware upgrade for the MX100 (search for MX100 in the dropdown here: http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/support-ssd) however after reading through the thread, the upgrade seems to require a fairly advanced skills and knowledge.  Anyway I'm not sure if the upgrade is intended to fix spinny beachball issues or random and frequent restarts like I'm experiencing.  Here's how Crucial describes the update...
Release Date: 03/10/2015 (Manual boot file for Windows and Mac)
Firmware for the MX100 (all form factors) is being updated from version MU01 to MU02. The MX100 is updateable to this new firmware starting from previous versions using tools provided by Micron.
This update will be mandatory cut-in for new product built in Micron factories, and is an OPTIONAL update for any drive in the field. For end users, it is recommended if the user is experiencing or wishes to prevent an issue related to the following items.
Version MU02 includes the following changes:
Improved stability, Efficiency, and Performance during power state transitions
Improved handling of environments with unstable power supplies
Improved handling of environments with SATA interface signal integrity issues
Improved response time for SMART read commands
Corrected error handling NCQ Trim Commands
Corrected reporting of SMART Attribute 5

  • Spaces and Exposé with Mavericks

I've lost Spaces and Exposé after a startup disk full error - any ideas?

That's annoying, no I didn't reinstall intellipoint or restart.
Funny, it reverted back to using the back/forward buttons when I selected the Apple + arrow keys. I wonder why it does that then? Sorry it didn't work for you.
Although that was fixed for me, my entire system has died:

Are you using 6.22 of MS IntelliPoint?

  • Macbook Pro late 2008 with Mavericks gets Grey screen of death.

    Hey guys..
When Mavericks was released, I updated my old Macbook Pro (late 2008) 2.8ghz on work, and since then I have had a couple of Grey Screen of Deaths.
I had none of those before Mavericks, so I guess thats the source of the problem.
I've been trying to figure out what might cause it, from the crash log below, but I can't seem to figure anything from it, so I was hoping you guys could help me?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to be a kernel panic, caused by some PowerManagement from kernel_task. But how do one fix that?

    I am  having similair issues :  MBP 4.1  2008
It does not want to reboot at all .
Stops with the grey screen .Spinning wheel / gear stops spinning  and Mac reboots automaticly to.... get stuck again .
Ive tried the recovery : No automatic reboot  But same screen : ( grey , stuck stopped spinning wheel)   some how it enters Disk Utility  because I can trigger the voice that ask for the language etc.  (I left it there overnight  without result )  I dont see DU on screen  ( tried second monitor : No luck )
Did a hardware test : No issues
Did single user logon  :   fsck   : No problems with the drive ( after 2 runs ) ( 1st runs : changes were made )
Did Logon Verbose status :  Initial messages :  shutdown reasons : code 128 ...   now followed by code 3
Tried to reinstall the original OSX ( 2008 )   No luck : grey screen changes to darker screen coming in from the top asking to reboot the system .
1st real bad signal was : When donwloading Maverick ( again )  to create a bootable USB  the screen started flickering ( this started when pressing the download button ???  - I had to reboot the mac to stop
    2 days later :
Last Live activity with this mac was : Trying to create maverick Bootable  USB  using diskmaker X )   During this activty the mac died on me .
I have a full time machine backup : so no worries about data...I hope  )
This mac is one of the lucky ones with the bad NVDIA 8600m gt cards ... after upgrarding in march 2013 to Lion ..it crashed on me with the black screen of death ...Since apple stopped the guarantee I baked it in the oven at 200 c for 7 minutes  . For the last  months it was working Fine  .   ( Hardware check shows no issues  - and upon reboot it chimes happy ..)
What could be my next options ?  ( Obvious buying a new one ... This  is allready launched as an idea .   I need more creative thoughts :-)

  • Am I able to upgrade the operating software on my 2009 Macbook Pro to work with Mavericks?

I have a 2009 Macbook Pro with 4 GB of Ram. Am I able to upgrade the software enough to support Mavericks and other software?

Yes, but you have a couple major caveats:
    Rosetta is gone:
    http://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6271
    Many drivers may not work.
And you have to buy 10.6 first, then upgrade to 10.6.8, to get the free 10.9 update, then the 10.9.2 update to avoid the security leaks of the first two versions of 10.9.

    Memory  6 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
    Internal drives: Mac HD 1TB. Disk 2: 750MB. Disk 3: 2 TB. Disk 4: 1 TB
My mid-2010 Mac Pro is sometimes not waking after it is in sleep mode. I was able to start it again after disconnecting peripherals, disconnected power for the allotted time, zapped PRAM. Did a disk repair with Disk Utility. Is there anything else I should be doing? Also generated this message in console/diagnostic and usage messages:
    8/8/14 11:43:30.575 AM powerd[16]: com.apple.message.domain: com.apple.sleep.failure

Perhaps related to this I cannot use Time Machine on a WD 2TB hd since Mavericks installed. When I switched windows while it was backing up it would display an "device unmounted without ejecting". Now it does not mount at all.
    Thanks

  • Will Final Cut Pro X work with mavericks

Was thinking about upgrading to Mavericks on my Mac Book Pro Retina but wanted to know, 1) will it use a lot more storage and 2) will it work with Final Cut Pro X?

When I was running the supposed GM of Mavericks just before it was released, FCPX wouldn't let me import ANYthing into it. When the import window would open it wouldn't let me choose anything. FCPX became useless and I would have to force quit it. So, I'm a little hesitant to upgrade to it today.

  • Logic pro 8 problems with mavericks

Logic Pro 8 worked fine with snow leopard. Just upgraded to mavericks and now when the playhead moves across the screen it wipes the track region clean (leaves empty black space). If you use the slider to move the viewable area from Left to Right the area refreshes and becomes viewable again but this is a major pain and a dissapointment.
Anyone else experience this? Know a fix?
    Thanks.

Re your comment and assumption: If you choose to buy a new Mac (and that in itself indicates you are not struggling that much financially)  at no point in my post did I say I had done that or even intended to!
Well, to have to run Mavericks and not being able to downgrade to an older version of OS X indicates you just have bought a recent Mac.... because modern Macs cannot run, say Snow Leopard as that particular OS X doesn't support the modern hardware found in recent Macs..
That is, of course...unless you meant there is a different reason why you can't/won't downgrade? If the latter is the case then that is a choice you are making based on your own priorities.. which was the other point i was trying to make.
Re your: and complaining about it here.. is a waste of everyone's time... surely noone is under any obligation to reply, or even to read a post. And "everyone" in this case appears to be just octopi and you! Goodness me.
Actually.. I was refering to yourself (and others who do much the same thing) more than anyone else.... As I said, because Apple 'isn't here" complaining here about Apple's actions is frankly a waste of your time (and efforts) and everyone else's for that matter. hence why I included that link which demonstrates a much more effective manner of getting across your displeasure with Apple's polivies.. to Apple themselves!
I don't believe that octopi's post indicated any form of arrogance or bullying.. Just him venting the much felt frustration over posts from people who don't do the proper research prior to upgrading their OS X and then complaining about it later!
Again, these type of posts are  all too common here and in other such forums.. and after a while it does get a bit old you know.... especially when there is post after post on the same subject which few people take the time to read first before posting up their own post... repeating what has been said countless times before.
So please bear that in mind before passing judgement on octopi who actually does a great deal of good for the most part, and spends a good deal of his (unpaid) time.. helping out other users.. in these forums...
    Cheers..

  • Does Final Cut Pro 7 work with Mavericks?

The title says it all, I'm afraid to upgrade to Mavericks and have my FCP 7 stop working....
    thanks
    Scott

Software / hardware harmony is a tricky business. It really boils down to two strategies.
The first is what I call the lockdown model - which is what you've largely done and is often the model followed by people who MUST have a reliable system to do their work. This involves freezing the system at a known state where the hardware, OS and relevant software all work reliably and you can accomplish your tasks with a minimum of hassle. The upside is you come in, do your job, go home and don't have to think too much about the tool(s). The downside is if something breaks (usually hardware) or you need to change to a new software and it has been a long time (in computer terms) since there was any change, you often need to upgrade/update a LOT of stuff all at once - which is expensive, painful and highly disruptive.
The other model is the "merry go round" model. This is where you are on a gradual upgrade/update path. You wait a few months after new versions of your software come out which gives the early adopters time to identify and sort the issues. At that point you can often update/upgrade with a level of certainty the system will work. The upside of this path is you stay reasonably current with hardware, OS and software and, since you've done this gradually but continuously, the costs are spread out over a longer period of time. The downside is there will be hiccups and the system will need more troubleshootiing if something unforseen in the necessary installation goes bad.
In either path, it is imperative to keep a good working clone of a "known to be good" version of the system (OS & software).
Ian points out a good strategy to start the migration to a new OS. A partition with the new system/software to test that can be booted from your existing system is a time honored protocol.
One thing is certain, the great river of technology is not slowing down and if you make your living swimming in it, you must pay attention to where it's heading. This means trying to stay aware of the trends and thiinking over the horizon about how all that is going to affect your work.
    Good luck,
    x
