Mouse and computer sporadically freeze on websites.

Periodically, my mouse freezes when I'm web surfing. Or leave a website open for a prolong period while doing something else at home. The only fix is to turn off the computer and reboot it. During freezes, I can't exit a website, I can't even shut down the computer normally or access task master or anything. I have to hold down the power on button until the computer shuts off or shut off the surge protective power strip. Sometimes the mouse will unfreeze on its own but shortly thereafter goes back to its old trick of freezing.
Today, I got it into my head that the problem wasn't my computer or some software interfering. So I logged on using something I dislike using, Internet Explorer. After going through the same motions as usual, including visiting websites that have frozen before, I experienced no freezes. This indicates the issue if Firefox. I have even opened multiple Tabs to provoke a possible freeze with IE but it doesn't freeze So again it must be Firefox.

  • Mouse and Audio stutter/freezes with Intel ICH9R AHCI drivers

edit: Initially (in original post) I suspected the random mouse and audio stutter/freezes were from a driver update. However between a reboot during these updates I had disconnected an eSATA cable from a drive that was not powered. It turns out the ICH9R when running in AHCI or RAID mode with appropriate drivers installed has problems with some HDDs when the drive isn't powered but the SATA data cable is connected. This is quite normal in SATA enclosures which I have plenty.
What makes this more puzzling is that the stutter/freezes are very tiny and hard to notice IF you don't have any PCI cards connected. With a Intel 100 Mbit PCI NIC connected these stutters became real blocking issue that would have prompted me to return this Gigabyte G33 motherboard (Also affects P35) to the shop had I noticed this issue sooner. I'm not yet sure whether this stutter w/ AHCI/RAID issue affects only the Gigabyte boards but what is certain is that it does affect these in quantity based on how there's others reporting the exact same issue if googling around.

This issue has been confirmed not to be limited to just my system.

Same problem here, it's not limited to Vista, also happens on XP/2003 both 32/64 bit. I'm 99% sure it's to do with the Intel AHCI/Matrix storage driver. It'd be interesting to know what your motherboard brand/model is. Mine is Gigabyte DS2R and I've seen reports of this issue on other forums as well. I'm using the integrated Intel graphics and every component is Intel except Audio Realtek and Network Broadcom. The issue goes away by disabling AHCI/RAID but you lose hot-swap of SATA drives and NCQ.
The primary indicator for this issue is that if any of the SATA ports has a drive that is plugged in but not powered up (and not powered down by the AHCI driver programmatically) then you get this global stutter/studder/hickups/choppy. In audio it sounds like tiny repeats. How bad it is seems to depend on what drive brand is plugged in etc so on some combinations it's very tiny and doesn't happen that often, on other drives it's more constant and easy to detect.
    I'd suggest you report at:

    Chipsets/Chipset software/Matrix storage Technology
btw. My AHCI BIOS/OROM version that is shown on boot with AHCI/RAID enabled is iSRC 1.07 08042006, what's yours?

Though most posts in this thread involve laptops and many of them attempt to isolate the problem in wireless network adapters, let me assure you the same problem can show up in a desktop with wired-ethernet-only. (Admittedly, it's a Realtek onboard gigabit LAN, and Realtek has been fingered by a number of you for its drivers, at least its audio drivers.)
On a brand new core2-quad P35 chipset machine with 4GB ddrII, with a completely clean install of Vista 32 business, I have been suffering intermittent global stuttering. It affects not only audio (of any sort, through any player, whether or not dsp-enhanced) but also video (you can see it in screen saver motion, for instance) and even cursor or mouse movement (hit and hold the spacebar in a text editor and watch the stuttering fun begin!). It's intermittent but not random; that is, it can disappear for a while after I apply one of my stab-in-the-dark fixes (read on) but can come back and then generally remains until I re-apply a fix. It's been like this since about day 1. Well, maybe day 2 or 3.
I've seen so many variants of this problem posted in so many forums, with so many theories, that I could spend the next three months doing nothing but troubleshooting it, assuming I had the budget and time to try endless substitute components or re-builds from scratch, but there's no assurance any or all of that would actually fix it. I do have the Intel Storage Matrix AHCI drivers pre-installed, and Intel itself vaguely alludes to possible 'degraded performance in Vista' with regard to those drivers--is this what they're talking about? They don't say. I do have an Nvidia 8800gts, and Nvidia forums are full of complaints about unacceptable issues with their video drivers, but again it's vague, no smoking gun for global stuttering. I have tried THREE different audio configurations--the onboard realtek hi-def; an x-fi elite; and a c-media based Omega Claro card. I have the problem with all of them. Discovering how musical the c-media card is was a happy accidental side effect of this miserable odyssey, but it really just makes it more frustrating, since I now want to listen to music more than ever but can't find a permanent solution to this vexing problem.
One of the weirdest symptoms is that the stuttering can re-appear (if it has been gone for a few days) just by connecting an external SATA drive, even if the drive is not turned on! Equally weird: simply going into the BIOS and just looking, changing nothing, exiting without saving, can cause it to reappear upon re-boot!
And to ice this cake of weirdness, here are some things that can make it go away (sometimes, at least for a while): removing the external SATA drive and rebooting; removing and re-seating the cards on the motherboard; and clearing the BIOS (jumper or pull out the battery) and then re-entering all the same settings as were there already.
The symptoms are driving me nuts, as audio is one of my main uses for a computer, but it's the HUH? quality of these various actions that can seem to make the problem disappear or re-appear that are really threatening my sanity. If anybody can sift a better clue out of these ashes of frustration than I can, I wish you would post it.

  • MOUSE AND KEYBOARD KEEP FREEZING- Have to constantly unplug to unfreeze!!

    Hi There guys,
I have a really annoying problem with my white emac… (made even more annoying by the fact that I just bought it!!)
My mouse and keyboard keep on freezing. I have to constantly pull out the cords from the usb to get it unfrozen. After I do that it starts working but then freezes again.
This happens every 5-10 seconds. I have tried switching the cords in the different usb ports and I have even switched keyboards from my new white keyboard to my old imac black one… The problem still persists!
Does anyone have any answers as to how I can fix this?? It's got progressively worse.
I can’t return the computer because it is not under warranty.
I have downloaded OS X 10.3.9 again recently to try and fix the problem but it is still here.

  • Mac Book Pro - Mouse and Track Pad Freeze

I left my mac book pro asleep for a few hours, everything had been working fine. When I returned it would not wake up so I restarted it.
It makes the chime and comes to the password page as per normal. Then I cannot move the mouse and the keyboard does not work. Also impossible to select Caps lock (light does not come on)
    Things I have tried:
    PRAM
    Safe Start Up Mode
    Attaching external keyboard and mouse
Restarting holding down ctrl, apple and power key
No luck with any of the above.
    Any ideas.
    Thanks in advance!

It's not completely clear if you are using an external USB mouse. Some people use the term "mouse" for the clicker bar so I want to make sure I understand how you are set up instead of guessing.
If you are not using an external mouse, remove the battery and inspect it for bulging or other deformation. That can put upward pressure on the underside of the trackpad assembly and take it down, often taking the built-in keyboard with it.

    Hi:
What that means is there is some process running in the background.
Check your resource monitor to see what is happening when you are seeing this.
You can also hit the cntrl + alt + del keys to launch the task manager and look at the processes tab to see what is going on.
Some process is eating up a lot of your memory causing that lag.

  • Screen is 'splitting' and computer is freezing in facebook chat and Skype - any ideas?

Hello - having issues with computer freezing during facebook chat and skype - also desktop 'splits' in half - like the 'apple' that should normally be in the top left corner is 2/3rds the way to the right and the time, date etc is in the middle of the screen.
Cannot force quit or get out of the programs once it freezes.
    Anyone seen this?
    Thanks.

If you've applied the latest updates for your system and it's still doing it and you've maybe already gone the extra mile and reloaded the OS, then it's a hardware issue and will probably require a physical fix.
I would suggest backing up your personal data and then do an OS reload and without putting anything back on it, try it then.  If it still happens, then it's hardware.

  • Trying to update to Lion and computer keeps freezing.

I have purchased Lion and it has "downloaded" but when I press the icon so I can actually follow through on the change-over, I get a rainbow wheel which after a few seconds freezes (the whole screen freezes). I have to hold the power in order to shut it down; not sure what to do. Any help would be nice, many thanks!

Before trying to install Lion with the installer, it would be a good idea to navigate to Disk Utility and repair your boot drive. Repair the drive until there is nothing left to repair. Also check that SMART is verified.
If there are errors that Disk Utility cannot repair, you will need to address these before installing Lion. A stronger utility like Disk warrior may be able to repair them, or possibly you may want to replace your hard drive if it has started to go south.
It's always a good idea to immediately repair your drive if you have had to force quit.
It's just a guess, but I suspect there is something about your hard drive that Lion doesn't like, and this is why you are getting the freeze.
    Good luck!

  • Mouse and keyboard go to sleep

From time to time the both the wireless mouse and wireless keyboard freeze on my P6-2275ea Desktop.
Because both always fail together It seems likely to be the radio link shutting down at the PC end.
Both can be restored to action by putting the PC to sleep using the on/off button and then waking it up.
It has occurred at apparently random intervals since I purchased the computer in 2012.
Sometimes it doesn't happen for weeks, sometimes it happens two or three times in a day.
    It is not the batteries.

    Hi again Ipswichman,
Since the steps above did not resolve the issue, I recommend returning your system back to a previous restore point. This can be done by following the steps in this document on Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 7).
If the problem continues, I suggest performing a backup and recovery of your operating system. This can be done by following the steps in this resource on
Backing Up Your Files (Windows 7), as well as Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 7). This should return your system back to factory defaults.

  • Mouse stops, computer freezes. this problem occurs with any mouse: bluetooth, wired, and a spare logitech wired mouse.  iMac 0S10.6.8

Help! Mouse stops, computer freezes. Restart helps for a while, then mouse doesn't respond. Problem occurs with my 4 "mice" - bluetooth, apple wireless, logitech wired & microsoft wired. Any solutions?

    Problem solved!
First, the underlying cause MAY have been an unusual circumstance: a smartphone (Galaxy Android) was placed next to the iMac, turned on and with Bluetooth enabled, and left for hours to charge.  Could this proximity have resulted in the Mac getting some strange Bluetooth input?
Fix:  Using the temporarily-installed mouse and keyboard, I removed the existing Bluetooth keyboard and trackpad entries. (I just removed every Bluetooth device.)  Then I used the standard procedure to re-pair the wireless keyboard and trackpad.
After removing all Bluetooth devices, I could not get the Mac to detect any Bluetooth devices until I restarted the Mac, at which point device detection and pairing worked flawlessly.
My best --and admittedly ignorant, sketchy-- theory:   Some mal-formed event got stuck in the Bluetooth input stream, causing the trackpad up and/or down states to be hyper-sticky.  That event couldn't be cleared without removing the originating device and re-pairing.

  • Mouse and keyboard freezing when first turn on computer

Everytime I fully shut off my computer and turning it back on, my mouse freezes when i press something on my keyboard. Even my keyboard stops working. This problem stops happening after i restart my computer, then my mouse and keyboard starts working. Because of this i keep my computer on all the time so i don't have to keep restarting everytime i start the computer. Is this a normal problem and is there a way to fix this? It tends to get really annoying.

  • The mouse on my computer randomly skips and at times freezes. What's happening with it?

Why does my mouse randomly skip or freeze?

Unless your mouse is about 3 feet from your mac pro then magic mice are notorius with these kind of problems on mac pro's.
Here's a long thread on this problem:
Poor Bluetooth reception and jerky mouse
Summary, replace the internal bluetooth antenna with an external antenna or use a BT dongle.
Other reported problems with MM in general is batteries loosing contact depending on the make of batteries.
Google "skipping magic mouse" or "jumpy magic mouse" and look at More Like This on the right side of this page.
    Update:
AAARRRGGGHHH   Just realized your profile said iMac but you posted in the mac pro forums.  Still look at the More Like This threads.  For iMacs you could have the battery loosing connection problem or even interference.

  • How to fix the mouse and keyboard freezing when installing Windows 7 on 27' iMac late 2013?

Hi, I have a question for u guys who can solve this.
I recently bought the new 27' iMac late 2013, and I installed some softwares and used it for few days.
Before I bought this I used the 15' Macbook Pro Retina, I installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, and I used the Windows for gaming.
    So back to my question.
So I bought the new iMac and I was tying to install Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit (with the same CD).
After dividing the partition, and other stuff, the iMac rebooted and I hold down the option (alt) key. I choose the Windows CD, and it said it is "getting ready to install Windows". I let it load, and the blue screen where you choose the language, time/location and keyboard input popped up. At the bottom right corner (at the same page), there is a button that said "Next (N)" which u need to click it to go to the next step. I was moving my mouse to click the button, but I realized that my mouse and keyboard was frozen. I tried both wireless and wired mouse and keyboard but they didn't work. There was nothing I could do. I hold the power button, (that was the only option) and tried my mouse and keyboard on Mac OS and it worked fine.
I thought something went wrong in the CD so I bought the Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. The result was same. It frizzed again. (I just wast few hundred $)
Latter my friend lend me his Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit. I tried it, and it worked, it didn't freezed on Windows 8.
The problem is I played Battlefield 4, Titan fall, and Watch Dogs, and Battlefield 4 multiplayer doesn't work on Windows 8.1. Even though when it works on Windows 8, I prefer using Windows 7.
Dose anyone knows how to fix this freezing thing?
    My computer is:
27' iMac late 2013 (bought it just few days ago)
I did no upgrades when I bought it, except the graphic card.
I bought the iMac in Korean Apple Store, and my Windows CD is in Korean, can that be a problem?
Please leave a comment when u think u can solve my problem.

    See -> http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1636/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_ 10.8.pdf.
In addition to the Windows disc (or USB flash drive with the Windows installer) you'll need a 8GB+ flash drive.
The referenced manual - on page 3, I think, gives you a run-down of what you'll need before you begin the installation. You may also want to post any further Boot Camp questions in the Boot Camp forum -> https://discussions.apple.com/community/windows_software/boot_camp.
    Good luck,

  • My pointer keeps turning into a colorful spinning pinwheel. Mac OS X (10.5.8) using a wireless mouse and keyboard, desktop computer

My pointer keeps turning into a colorful spinning pinwheel. Mac OS X(10.5.8) using a wireless mouse and keyboard ,desktop computer.

The spinning wait cursor (or "beachball") generally means there's some problem that's causing the current app to freeze, or slowing down the current application, or that's slowing down the whole system.
Here's an overview of the spinning wait cursor.
Make a backup first, using the Disk Utility tool booted from your installation DVD to external storage.  This backup to ensure you still have access to your most current and complete data, shut this be a problem with your hardware.
Then use Utilities > Activity Monitor.app and the Utilities > Console.app tools to see what's going on, and whether there are related errors being logged.
There are some general troubleshooting articles around, too.

  • Why does my mouse and keyboard freeze periodically?

I have a Macbook Pro that I bought at the end of last July. It's been working perfectly until just recently.
For whatever reason, periodically the screen will freeze. I can't move the mouse, and I can't type anything on the screen. It typically unfreezes anywhere between 15-45 seconds later. Things like movies or songs playing don't freeze when this happens, only the keyboard and mouse. Once it unfreezes, it's perfectly fine.
Is there any reason it would be doing this?

I just got my first bluetooth mouse and I've had problems with it disconnecting multiple times per day! I don't understand why! I have a mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro with OS X 10.8.2. I was using a Logitech wireless usb mouse but it would disconnect when teh computer went to sleep and I had to unplug the nano receiver and plug it back in every time for it to work again. So I decided to get a bluetooth mouse to see if I would have better luck with it. Well this is disconnecting a lot! It's so annoying! My new mouse is a gigabyte M7700B notebook bluetooth wireless mouse. There is no software from gigabyte to use with this mouse. It's paired properly.
What can I do to remedy this situation? The only problems I can find online for a bluetooth mouse disconnecting is with the Apple bluetooth mouse. I don't have that so it isn't helping me.
Is this just a problem with the bluetooth in Mac's?? It's been a problem for years as far as I can tell. My mac is relatively new. Help!
