Mouse/audio playback freezing

Hi -
I have a 3.33 6-core Westmere Mac Pro that I purchased about 2 months ago. (8 gigs OWC RAM, all others factory spec)
I use it as the main computer in my studio. It is mainly just a Pro Tools computer (PT9, latest hardware drivers) with a few extra things installed, like third party plugins (soundtoys, LA Scoring, Superior Drummer, etc.)
That being said, it has worked perfectly until tonight. When I move the mouse, it will be moving smoothly, then every 1.5 - 2 seconds, it will freeze for an instant, and then begin moving again. If there is any audio playing, the audio will freeze as well. I'm sure these are symptoms of a bigger issue, as I have tried multiple mice (bluetooth and wired) and it still happens.
I have done the following to troubleshoot -
unplugged all devices and restarted
tried multiple mice (Magic Mouse and wired Logitech)
selected different audio drivers
unplugged monitors (i run 2 Dell 24"s at once)
repaired permissions
repaired all of my hard drives (system, tracking, and sample drives)
run hardware diagnostics (everything came back green)
adjusted system audio latency
and many other things. I cannot get this problem to stop. It has been going on now for a few hours and it is so annoying that I can't get any work done.
If anyone can shed any light on this, that would be much appreciated as I am under the gun with work and if I can't get this fixed soon I'm screwed. Thanks.

Sometimes it is like going to the doctor, ordering some tests, and seeing what the results are, AND ruling out some under lying issues as well (no malignant tumors found). Ever watch "House"?
Which is why clone + DW is a good place to start.
Rewriting the Finder would be great, but it has so many bugs, patches, and is huge.
USB has always been an issue with Macs and OS X, all you can do there is try to use and buy good cables, as sometimes even those short 'extenders' Apple includes can actually be the cause of trouble.
The number of times that bad/marginal RAM has been at the heart of trouble is also surprising, but very real, and not at all obvious.
So do it, see what that does. Disk Utility I have said 1,000 times, is not as robust and "no error found" can be meaningless in the end. Same for AHT, it may find a problem and report an error, but there are things with hardware it does not.
The same tutorials apply regardless.
My reasoning, yrs of using and maintaining systems going back 4 decades.
Why is space curved and light bends? They still can't account for dark matter and what black holes really are.
I found a bad SATA cable, or a bad port, maybe causing a short, trying to narrow down a system freeze on one system.
Sometimes diagnose and troubleshoot means that even a "genius" will resort to "well, let's try this video card that we are sure is good" (and hope that trying it doesn't fry it). Same with swapping out a set of RAM sometimes. Or running Memtest for 24 hrs.

  • KDE: mouse sometimes freezes on audio playback

Just installed KDE, and I've noticed that the mouse will sometimes freeze briefly when ARTS starts up. I haven't had to exit X thus far, but the freezups are very vexxing. Has anyone else observed this?

Ah, cool! I have it set to "No Audio Output" because I don't like bells and whistles interrupting music when I'm playing it (all the time)
Xine is a fantastic piece of software, in addition to the fact that in amaroK it has been tweaked to give the best spectrum analyser responsiveness and the fact that it plays anything you throw at it, it is also really quick to start up and really stable, unlike that piece of crap they call MPlayer, which explodes into pieces if you so much as look at it.
I am really looking forward to setting it to my multimedia backend in KDE4, so all things KDE will radiate its greatness when multimedia is on the cards. Death to ARTS!

  • Mouse and Audio stutter/freezes with Intel ICH9R AHCI drivers

edit: Initially (in original post) I suspected the random mouse and audio stutter/freezes were from a driver update. However between a reboot during these updates I had disconnected an eSATA cable from a drive that was not powered. It turns out the ICH9R when running in AHCI or RAID mode with appropriate drivers installed has problems with some HDDs when the drive isn't powered but the SATA data cable is connected. This is quite normal in SATA enclosures which I have plenty.
What makes this more puzzling is that the stutter/freezes are very tiny and hard to notice IF you don't have any PCI cards connected. With a Intel 100 Mbit PCI NIC connected these stutters became real blocking issue that would have prompted me to return this Gigabyte G33 motherboard (Also affects P35) to the shop had I noticed this issue sooner. I'm not yet sure whether this stutter w/ AHCI/RAID issue affects only the Gigabyte boards but what is certain is that it does affect these in quantity based on how there's others reporting the exact same issue if googling around.

This issue has been confirmed not to be limited to just my system.

Same problem here, it's not limited to Vista, also happens on XP/2003 both 32/64 bit. I'm 99% sure it's to do with the Intel AHCI/Matrix storage driver. It'd be interesting to know what your motherboard brand/model is. Mine is Gigabyte DS2R and I've seen reports of this issue on other forums as well. I'm using the integrated Intel graphics and every component is Intel except Audio Realtek and Network Broadcom. The issue goes away by disabling AHCI/RAID but you lose hot-swap of SATA drives and NCQ.
The primary indicator for this issue is that if any of the SATA ports has a drive that is plugged in but not powered up (and not powered down by the AHCI driver programmatically) then you get this global stutter/studder/hickups/choppy. In audio it sounds like tiny repeats. How bad it is seems to depend on what drive brand is plugged in etc so on some combinations it's very tiny and doesn't happen that often, on other drives it's more constant and easy to detect.
    I'd suggest you report at:

btw. My AHCI BIOS/OROM version that is shown on boot with AHCI/RAID enabled is iSRC 1.07 08042006, what's yours?

Though most posts in this thread involve laptops and many of them attempt to isolate the problem in wireless network adapters, let me assure you the same problem can show up in a desktop with wired-ethernet-only. (Admittedly, it's a Realtek onboard gigabit LAN, and Realtek has been fingered by a number of you for its drivers, at least its audio drivers.)
On a brand new core2-quad P35 chipset machine with 4GB ddrII, with a completely clean install of Vista 32 business, I have been suffering intermittent global stuttering. It affects not only audio (of any sort, through any player, whether or not dsp-enhanced) but also video (you can see it in screen saver motion, for instance) and even cursor or mouse movement (hit and hold the spacebar in a text editor and watch the stuttering fun begin!). It's intermittent but not random; that is, it can disappear for a while after I apply one of my stab-in-the-dark fixes (read on) but can come back and then generally remains until I re-apply a fix. It's been like this since about day 1. Well, maybe day 2 or 3.
I've seen so many variants of this problem posted in so many forums, with so many theories, that I could spend the next three months doing nothing but troubleshooting it, assuming I had the budget and time to try endless substitute components or re-builds from scratch, but there's no assurance any or all of that would actually fix it. I do have the Intel Storage Matrix AHCI drivers pre-installed, and Intel itself vaguely alludes to possible 'degraded performance in Vista' with regard to those drivers--is this what they're talking about? They don't say. I do have an Nvidia 8800gts, and Nvidia forums are full of complaints about unacceptable issues with their video drivers, but again it's vague, no smoking gun for global stuttering. I have tried THREE different audio configurations--the onboard realtek hi-def; an x-fi elite; and a c-media based Omega Claro card. I have the problem with all of them. Discovering how musical the c-media card is was a happy accidental side effect of this miserable odyssey, but it really just makes it more frustrating, since I now want to listen to music more than ever but can't find a permanent solution to this vexing problem.
One of the weirdest symptoms is that the stuttering can re-appear (if it has been gone for a few days) just by connecting an external SATA drive, even if the drive is not turned on! Equally weird: simply going into the BIOS and just looking, changing nothing, exiting without saving, can cause it to reappear upon re-boot!
And to ice this cake of weirdness, here are some things that can make it go away (sometimes, at least for a while): removing the external SATA drive and rebooting; removing and re-seating the cards on the motherboard; and clearing the BIOS (jumper or pull out the battery) and then re-entering all the same settings as were there already.
The symptoms are driving me nuts, as audio is one of my main uses for a computer, but it's the HUH? quality of these various actions that can seem to make the problem disappear or re-appear that are really threatening my sanity. If anybody can sift a better clue out of these ashes of frustration than I can, I wish you would post it.

  • SoundBlaster X-FI Xtreme Audio: short freeze / dropouts

    hi,
    my problem is:
from time to time my audio playback stops and whatever's coming out of my speakers at that point stopps for half a second or so and then continues as it should. video output and key/mouse input freezes while this happens.
it happens during regular working and in games.
it's annoying and I don't know what causes this problem. so I don't know how to fix it.
    specs:
Soundblaster X-FI Xtreme Audio PCI? driver version 5.2..62
Windows XP SP3 and latest fixes
    Core2Quad Q6600
    3 GB DDR2-RAM
    GA EP-35 DS3
    GeForce 8800GT PCIe
    TP Link WiFi PCI
anything that might help would be nice!

There is a very good reason why it tells you your card isn't supported, that's because it isn't,?This download?is an?application for Creative Sound Blaster? X-Fi? series of audio devices. It restores 3D audio and EAX? effects for certain DirectSound?3D games in Microsoft? Windows Vista?. For more details, read the rest of this web release note.
This download supports the following audio devices only:
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro<
    Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi?XtremeGamer Fatalty?Pro<
    Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatalty<
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum Fatalty Champion Series<

?Alchemy was written to translate DirectSound3D software calls to OpenAL hardware calls, and unfortunately the Xtreme Audio doesn't have the hardware, the EMU20K2?(all that card basically is is a renamed SB Li've 24 bit/Audigy SE, neither of which have the hardware either).

  • Skipping Audio Playback of Raw AVCHD Files in PE7

I get constantly skipping/dropping audio when playing back AVCHD clips in PE7. These are pretty long takes imported from a Canon HF10 camera. The video seems to playback OK with no jitter/judder or dropouts.I have tried reducing the clip to a 3 minute length but audio still skips/drops every 3-5 seconds for a second or so. I rendered/exported a short test clip to a .wmv file and a 780p file and the audio playback is just fine on the rendered clip. I'm using a Vista 32 Dell 730 desktop with 4 gigs ram and 2.6 quadcore processor and all editing on internal Sata drives. I had the Pinnacle studio 12 editing package first but moved to PE7 due to freezes and crashes. Anybody got any ideas? Thanks!

For HD editing in PrPro, Adobe also recommends a RAID 0 (or similar) media disc. Both HD Audio & Video need a fast file transfer rate. Many get by without the RAID, but it has helped many others. Just a thought.
Also, if you have fewer than 3 internal HDD's, and some of the ones that you have are doing multiple duty, like OS/Programs, and then Project/Media/Scratch Disks, the stream can definitely be too slow to get both smooth Audio and Video.
How is your I/O sub-system set up? Number of HDD's, sizes, speed and controller type?

  • Audio playback delay using M-Audio Audiophile

    I have an MBP, 2.66 GHz i7, 4GB 1067 Mhz DDR3 Ram. External monitor on DVI. OS X 10.6.8
I've just started using FCP X and have cut one movie with it ( http://youtu.be/SUQLTk4aCS8 )
However I am now experiencing a problem that audio playback is about 10 frames behind the video, even though the waveform on the screen lines up with the video.
I am using an M-Audio Audiophile firewire audio interface to playback audio. When I switch back to the internal soundcard audio sync is fine. This problem started after I updated the M-Audio driver, as the one on the MBP was the one that transferred across when I copied all my files from my previous MBP (I can't remember Apple's name for this process, when you connect the new computer to old computer by firewire and transfer all files and settings automatically)
The M-Audio control panel wasn't working on this MBP so I updated to the newset driver, the 64 bit version. I assume the i7 and OS X 10.6.8 is 64 bit but I am not positive as I could not find any guidance on my computer or elsewhere.
Can anyone help me with this? I prefer the sound quality of my Audiophile, I find the internal soundcard very trebly. Just want to get rid of the playback delay.

    Thanks for responding.
It seems quite strange that the driver update caused the problem...maybe I should roll back to the previous driver? worth a try I guess...although this is a new machine so doing that could cause other problems.
ANNNNOYING....on the internal soundcard, whenever I click the mouse or scroll the timeline I hear annoying clicks and pops thru my speakers.
What kind of 'pro' software doesnt let u use an external soundcard. I think Apple really screwed up here. I feel sorry for everyone who invested in full-on FCP suites and training time for editing feature films who are no longer going to get updates and support.

  • No Audio Playback due to Error Message "Disk is too slow. (Prepare) (-10001)"

Out of the blue, no audio playback.  Was working just fine earlier today.
I repeatedly get the error message:
    Disk is too slow. (Prepare)
    (-10001)
NOTE: I have more than enough disc space.  That is NOT the issue.
I also just got a second error message:
Part of the Project was not played
This project has too many real instrument tracks to be played in real-time. To optimize performance, see the 'Optimizing GarageBand performance' page in GarageBand Help.
NOTE: Odd as I have only 2 tracks in the GarageBand file.
    Any others experience this?  Suggestions?

Have a look into the Preferences folder (YourUserFolder/Libraries/Preferences/) and trash all Logic preferences.
You'll have to setup the program again.

  • Premiere Elements 12 - Gaps in audio playback

    Hello everyone!
I have a problem with Adobe Premiere Elements 12: when I play video in timeline or preview window, there are lots of gaps and pauses in audio playback, even though video is playing smoothly. Usually the pattern goes like this: 2 seconds of clean audio - 0,5 seconds silence - 2 seconds of clean audio... etc.
    I have tried the following:
    - change audio buffer settings
    - change audio device (I have tested with integrated audio chip ("High Definition Audio"), M-Audio Fast Track Pro and cheap USB audio interface - same results with all of them)
    - start a new project with correct settings and import only one file
    - disable background antivirus monitoring
Usually source material is AVCHD 1440x1080 25fps (PAL, MTS-file) from small Sony camera, but this problem seems to continue even if I insert only still photo and mp3 audio to timeline. CPU load is about 6% during playback. It seems like Premiere Elements makes these gaps to playback signal before sending it to audio hardware?
Computer specs: Intel Core i7-4770 @ 3,4GHz, 16 GB RAM, 128GB SSD drive for OS & software and 2.0TB 7200 rpm drive for video, Intel HD Graphics 4600, Windows 8 (64bit).
I would be really grateful if someone could give me some tips to solve this annoying audio playback problem.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that this problem occurs all the time - even when video is rendered in timeline.

Thanks for the quick response, TonyPh12345.  Clearly not what I was hoping for but not unexpected. BB

  • Mouse stops, computer freezes. this problem occurs with any mouse: bluetooth, wired, and a spare logitech wired mouse.  iMac 0S10.6.8

Help! Mouse stops, computer freezes. Restart helps for a while, then mouse doesn't respond. Problem occurs with my 4 "mice" - bluetooth, apple wireless, logitech wired & microsoft wired. Any solutions?

    Problem solved!
First, the underlying cause MAY have been an unusual circumstance: a smartphone (Galaxy Android) was placed next to the iMac, turned on and with Bluetooth enabled, and left for hours to charge.  Could this proximity have resulted in the Mac getting some strange Bluetooth input?
Fix:  Using the temporarily-installed mouse and keyboard, I removed the existing Bluetooth keyboard and trackpad entries. (I just removed every Bluetooth device.)  Then I used the standard procedure to re-pair the wireless keyboard and trackpad.
After removing all Bluetooth devices, I could not get the Mac to detect any Bluetooth devices until I restarted the Mac, at which point device detection and pairing worked flawlessly.
My best --and admittedly ignorant, sketchy-- theory:   Some mal-formed event got stuck in the Bluetooth input stream, causing the trackpad up and/or down states to be hyper-sticky.  That event couldn't be cleared without removing the originating device and re-pairing.

  • CC 7.2.1 playback freeze then crash

    Premiere Pro 7.2.1
MacBook Pro Retina with 27 inch apple cinema display (two screens)
    Mac OSX 10.8.5
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
    CUDA Driver Version: 5.0.61
    Footage is a mix of RED 4K R3D, 5D H264, Sony FS700 MTS, GoPro H264.
Mercury playback is on - CUDA
    Problem:
Right after i open up Premiere I put the cursor at any point on the timeline or just press play on the current timeline and playback freezes. Some times I can get two to 10 seconds of playback and then it freezes. The rest of the program work fine just no playback in the sequence window or the preview window.
I can save, I can open an new bin, the drop down menus work etc. No spinning beachball.
When I go to quit, Premiere locks up and I have to Force Quit. No crash log most of the time. If I get a crash log I will add it.
When this happens, it usually happens 3-6 times in a row. I can't seem to get past the first playback after openning the project. If for some reason I can get it to playback after opening the project.... it's fine and runs most of the day with no propblems.  But I have no idea what gets me past the first playback.
    Notes:
I have tried to reboot the whole computer and then run through all of the following.
I have tried cleaning the Media Cache. Seems to have no effect.
I have opened Premiere while holding the shift/option keys. Seems to have no effect.
After playback freezes i have tried to switch to "software only" to try and free up the freeze. Still frozen.
I am using Magic Bullet Looks 2.1.3 (this was supposed to be and update for CC 7.2) but none of the footage freezing up has any effects on it.
I am using an older cuda driver because I was having just as many or more problems with 5.5.25

First reset the prefrences for Prmeier pro by going the below mentioned locations
    1. User account->User library->Prefrences->Adobe->Premier pro ->7.0(reame the folder to Old_7.0)
    2. Documents->Adobe->premier pro ->7.0(rename the folder to old_7.0)
Tried this first: Did not change anything same freeze and crash.
Please empty the media code folder(location for media code folder is as below).
    Macintosh Hard drive->Library->application Support->Adobe->Common->Plugin ->7.0->Media core
Tried this second: Worked! Playback seems to be fine. THANK YOU.
Pretty sure the culprit was Magic Bullet LOOKS!!!!!
So here's my new problem. My guess is that the Magic Bullet LOOKS plugin was the culprit. There were a few other plugins in the Media Core folder but that was the only one I was currently using. Soooo I'm going to edit for awhile without it just to make sure that was the problem but I really need that plug in. I'm going to go back to Red Giant and tell them what's going on. I know it's there problem but do you have any recomendations from your experience on how to make the Magic Bullet LOOKS plugin work?

  • Performance hit in audio playback in Solaris 10

    Hi,
I've noticed while trying out the Solaris 10 beta 72 that the audio playback quality took a major hit since Solaris 9. I was hoping that this would go away in the Solaris 10 release, but it's not the case.
If I try to play an .mp3 file with mpg123 or even audioplay an .au file, there are regular clicks in the playback, audible about twice per second. Booting into Solaris 9, the audio playback is perfect.
My intuition tells me that the integration of DTrace into the kernel is the culprit, but of course, I have no proof. Can anyone think of a way to test this theory? Can DTrace be disabled? Maybe DTrace can be used to figure out what's going on?

  • Premiere Pro CC 2014 playback freezing and crashing with new iMac i7

Using Premiere Pro CC 2014 and having constant playback freezing and software crashes on a brand new iMac i7.
    Here are the specs:
    iMac i7 4.0GHz 5k Retina
    32 GB Ram
    AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4GB graphics card
    512GB Solid State Drive
I was on chat yesterday with an Adobe tech. Although playback/render settings show the OpenCL option to utilize the AMD graphics card for processing, I was advised to switch to "Software Only" as that card is not supported yet. I had to re-render my 45 minute documentary (which doesn't appear to be any faster than it was on my old 2011 iMac by the way) and it still has the same issues.
So frustrating? Anyone else experiencing this? Any advice? I hope I didn't just buy this "super machine" in vein.
    Thanks,
    Jason

    Hi All,
Taking some tips from Kevin Monahan. If you haven't already gone through this list please do so.
Sign out from Creative Cloud, restart Premiere Pro, then sign in
    Update any GPU drivers
    Trash preferences
Ensure Adobe preference files are set to read/write
    Delete media cache
    Remove plug-ins
If you have AMD GPUs, make sure CUDA is not installed
    Repair permissions
In Sequence Settings > Video Previews, change the codec to one that matches your footage
    Disconnect any third party hardware
If you have a CUDA GPU, ensure that the Mercury Playback Engine is set to CUDA, not OpenCL
    Disable App Nap
    Reboot

  • IPhone 4 audio playback cuts out after latest update (5.1)

My phones audio playback ( podcast, audiobook or music) cuts out at random intervals during playback.
This happens when listening through apple headPhones or my audio lead aux input to my stereo.
This has only started since the last software update (5.1). It's really frustrating as you often hit the jump back or forward arrows when restarting, instead of the intended Play symbol ( they are close together). This is really frustrating when your listing to an hour+ podcast.
Is anyone else having this problem since the update?

Same problem here! My phone was functioning correctly after the update until today, when it randomly attempted it's own emergency call, then requested that I turn on location services. When I hit cancel, it repeatedly requested that I turn on the service. When I agreed to turn on location services, it defaulted to the screen with the iTunes logo and the USB cable. Since then, I have been unable to get it to function. The phone has been switching between a black screen and the apple screen and buzzing periodically. When I touched the apple, it pixellated and melted away. I did see a message that the iPhone needed to be activated once and very briefly. I managed to connect it to iTunes using an old troubleshooting guide, but when I asked iTunes to restore it to factory settings (politely, thank you), it gave me error 21 (unknown error) and said it was unable to restore.
    Hopefully someone has an answer...?

  • AIR + Android audio playback in background

    Hello everbody,
at the moment I am evaluating the realisation auf a radioplayer using a rtmp stream for android devices.
There are two question for which I could not find any advices or resoltions.
    My questions are:
1.) Is it possible to play/continue an audiostream, even if the app itself is pushed into background?
2.) How are updates handled for apps in Android-Store? Is it the same as with the updateroutine for AIR on Desktops?
Thanks in advance for your answers.

    Hi Varun,
    thanks for your answers.
Are there any ressources/links, maybe on adobe devnet, available for audio playback while app is in background?
I already searched the web so far, but could not find any hints.
but anyway thanks for your response!
