Mouse cursor jumping around

My cursor on my MacBook Pro at times jumps around and the screen size changes without warning. Also, the screen will jump from safari to desktop without warning. I have changed settings in system preferences back to the most basic settings and this has seemed to solve some problems.

I had a similar problem with a wired mighty mouse at a former job, and a current co-worker is having this happen with her wired mighty mouse as well.

my cursor jumps around when i'm typing. it randomly lands in a previous part of the text. i do not use a mouse. i am decinitely NOT accudentally hitting the trackpad. it happens enough that i am starting to hate my fairly new macbook pro. i tried turning off bluetooth but it still happens. the strangest part is i cant find other complaints of this happening, at least recently. anyone have ideas?

If you have a fairly new Mac...

  • On my Macbook Pro my cursor jumps around and does it's own thing even with a usb mouse, on my Macbook Pro my cursor jumps around and does it's own thing even with a usb mouse

Having trouble with my MacBook Pro and the cursor jumping around and doing it's own thing.  Clicking opening up other folders etc.

There are several possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps until it's resolved.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article.
    2. Boot in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you reboot as usual, stop here and post your results. If you can't boot in safe mode, do the same. If you booted in safe mode and there was no change, go on to the next step.
    3. Reset the System Management Controller.
    4. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    5. A swollen battery in a MacBook Pro or Air can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced.
    6. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built in trackpad of a MacBook to  behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    7. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    8. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
    9. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

  • OSX update 10.10.2 causes mouse to jump around and text to be highlighted randomly in Dreamweaver CC 2014

OSX update 10.10.2 causes mouse to jump around and text to be highlighted randomly in Dreamweaver CC. When trying to click on a specific line of code in a js file the cursor ends up in a different place in the script and several lines of code highlighted. Clicking again jumps the mouse to a different position and even more lines of code highlighted and some characters rearranged, breaking the lines of code. Very frustrating.

    Preran,
I am having the same issue. I have a MBP connected to 2 x Dell 27" monitors over Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cables. Once I updated to OS X 10.10.2 this cursor highlight/jumping around issue only occurs on the connected monitors. If I move the program to the main laptop display the issue goes away. It does not require me to restart the program or the machine to make it work correctly. One way I am able to identify the issue is if I go to the line numbers in code like I wanted to select multiple lines - in the one that works correctly, the cursor turns into a white version where the tip of the cursor points to the right. When it is wrong, the cursor stays black and will only have the tip point to the left. Its just another way I identified if it was working cause I tried uninstalling DW and reinstalling - didn't work. Reset preferences as you discussed - no go. And I used other editors like IntelliJ and Adobe Edge Code - all of which work fine and don't display this issue.
I tried the preferences reset you suggest and it doesn't work. I have another machine with OS X 10.10.1 on it and this issue is not there on any monitor. Any help with this ASAP as it pretty much stops you from being able to do any editing especially with longer pages as it consistently wants to page up when you select anything and if you then click again in another area it tries to move the highlighted code to that new spot.
Update: I have a USB Microsoft Arch touch mouse connected (always worked just fine). When I go to place my cursor at some point in the code it causes the highlight flicker. If I switch over and use the built in trackpad, then I can place the cursor without the highlight issue. When trying to select multiple lines or sections of code, that still see's the highlight, page up and move of code issues regardless of input type.

  • My cursor jumps around while typing and scrolling. i've tried different mice, different usb ports

I have a new HP pavillon HPE windows 7. My cursor jumps around while typing and scrolling. I've tried different mice and usb ports.I contacted HP support and was instructed to do several things to the mouse and pointer, nothing helps. I installed in usb port in the rear of the computer that helped for a short time, then it went back to jumping around. So what else can I try. Thanks

I have to admit I am baffled. I understand and have seen the issue happen on laptops before, but for the issue to be happening on a desktop strange. I can even understand a wireless mouse, however yours is wired.
Microsoft has a tool called Mr Fix it. It scans the problem area and attempts to fix whatever is wrong. It's worth the shot in this case to see if it helps resolve the mouse issue.

  • Mouse arrow jumps around on the screen

mouse arrow jumps around on the screen

My iMac is unusable! If I click on a file the highlite runs down to the last file in the folder
When I boot up the hilight jumps all over the screen until it arrives at my startup drive.
If I type something and make an error it cannot be corrected, the cursor dances back to the begining of the sentence.
When clicking on the tool bar, eg. Safari "file" the cursor moves to all the other menu bar options.
I use "MacKeeper" for virus control. For a while it wouldn't load. Zeobit was able to correct that problem by remotely going into my computer and fixing everything the needed to be fixed. They solved that problem and the computer seemed fine. MacKeeper is currently checking all of my drives and partions. They also updated my virus library. This was yesterday (9/15/2012).
I scanned my startup disk this morning and it was clean. I also scanned two of my external drives as well as my internal drive. So far all are clean.  7 Drives to go.
I am running OSX 10.8.1 on an early 2008 iMac.
    4 GB RAM
    1.5 GB startup drive
3 external drives running on UBS via two docks.
3 External WD 2T external drives.
    3 MyBooks drives via Firewire.
A total of 9 external drives with 15 partitions. All are Western Digital.
There has never been an issue with this configuration. I've been using Apple products since the "Fat Mac", twenty or so years. So I know my way around my macs, at least enough to solve any problems that have occured.
There are no authorized Apple techs in the country of Panama. Would sure appreciate help on this.

  • My trackpad seems to be malfunctioning.  Cursor jumps around.  Screens shift.

My trackpad seems to be malfunctioning.  The cursor jumps around and doesn't always respond.  The screen shifts from one to another involuntarily.  Does anyone have an answer to this problem?

Portables and Magic Trackpad: Jumpy or erratic trackpad operation
Does this occur with the power adapter connected, disconnected, or both?
Check your battery status. A battery that reaches its end of life may swell, creating pressure beneath the trackpad that will result in the symptoms you describe.

  • Iphone 3gS Cursor jumps around.

My Iphone 3gS cursor jumps around on occasion when typing texts or emails. The issue has persisted despite several resets and software upgrades. When the cursor jumps, it can either go to the next line or else into the "Sent from my Iphone" line. Any ideas on the cause and especially on how to fix this? Thanks in advance!

I "catch" this ... I can only call it malware / miscellious software... occassionaly when browsing not always legit sites on the deep web.
Here's how I'm able to sucessfully clear that condition.
    Power down the notebook
Reset the SMC using the power adapter to verify the SMC reset.
Immediatly after resetting the SMC reset the PRAM several times 3 or 4 times.
Allow the Mac to boot normally.. No more issue.

  • Is anyone having trouble with the cursor jumping around since Lion was installed on your computer? Never happened until Lion.

Is anyone having trouble with the cursor jumping around while typing since you installed Lion? Never had any problems of that sort prior to Lion. I have an older machine. I believe it is a 2008 MacBook Pro. Especially happens with Yahoo. I am baffled.

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

  • T420 problem: Cursor jumping around

Hello everyone, I have a new T420s. Whenever I type a text the cursor jumps around which is very annoying. I have already deactivated the touchpad but the problem persists. What can I do to solve it?
    Many thanks,
    Torsten

You can turn the trackpoint (stick) off on the T420, it does not seem to allow you to turn the trackpoint and touchpad off at the same time through the UltraNav utility, but it might be possible in the BIOS.

Product Number: A9P60UA#ABA   Envy 15 Notebook PC
    OS = Windows 7
When typing (either email or word document), the cursor jumps around, inserting characters randomly.  This has been a problem since I received the computer.  The issue seems to be resolved if I disable the touchpad.

Please try reinstall the touchpad driver. or try the latest touchpad driver from hp.com which can help fix the issue.
    Good luck !!!

  • Does anyone know why my mouse cursor jumps all over the screen at times?

Does anyone know why the mouse cursor jumps all over the screen at times, especially if I am playing solitare?  Is it Yahoo games or my Apple?

  • Track pad cursor jumping around without being touched

My daughter has a macbook pro 1.5 years old running OS 10.6.8 and for the last two weeks has had the cursor jumping around and clicking on anything and everything.  She is in college and uses airport to connect to college network.  What is the problem?

You have some type of hardware problem. More then likely the battery is swelling and putting presure on the trackpad. The only thing to do is take to Apple and have them check it all out, replacing any parts that are needed.

  • Email cursor jumping around while typing????

My cursor jumps around while I am typing and is just erratic.

I have this issue as well.  I am using a early 2008 macbook, 2.4ghz intel core 2 duo.  I usually am only typing on this computer for email.  I have tried both firefox and safari with the same issue.  I was initially hoping it was just a bug in the application, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

  • Mouse pointer jumping around the screen

My mouse pointer has just started jumping around the screen. It vibrates and slowly moves down the screen even if I am not touching it. I have cleaned the sensor but that has not helped. I unplugged it and the pointer still jumped around.
Any ideas what might be causing this as I have not seen quite this problem on other discussions.

    HI,
That's interesting... restart your iMac. See if that makes a difference.
Also, do you have anything nearby that might cause interference, like a cell phone or graphics tablet?
May sound crazy, but dust and lint build up on a mouse pad can cause erratic cursor behavior.
You could try deleting this file.
    com.apple.driver.AppleHIDMouse.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your iMac.
