Mouse cursor snaps to point on screen

I posted this two days ago in the Mac Pro forum, but after searching for a solution since then, I've come to two conclusions: 1) the problem is not a hardware one and 2) using OS X without a mouse is horrendous. Forgive me for copying and editing my own original postings. First, here is a digest:
- the cursor snaps back to its starting point on the screen after ca. 1/2 sec of movement, I can hardly move the cursor to halfway the screen before it snaps back
- not a hardware problem, appears with Kensington Expert Trackball, Magic Trackpad, Apple Magic Mouse and keyboard used as mouse
- not connected with a single user account, appears in the login screen, main user account and system operator account
- the snap-to position differs in the login screen and user accounts
- turning of the computer, unplugging does not work
- resetting PRAM does not work
- unplugging + replugging trackball USB-cable does not work
- the problem appeared suddenly in mid of normal use.I had not changed in settings before the problem
Any ideas? Is it possible to contact someone at Apple directly?
Below my original messages:
I started having a strange problem with the mouse cursor. I started the computer, the mouse worked fine as always. Suddenly the cursor started fixating on a point on the lower right portion of the screen. I would move the cursor, it would move maybe halfway across the screen for a split second and then snap right back to the starting position.
I tried shutting down the computer and restarting. Didn't help. The cursor behaves the same way in the login screen too. The only difference is that now the "homing position" is somewhere in the upper right part of the screen.
I have a Kensington Expert trackball and a Magic Trackpad. I've removed the trackpad, in case it had started interfering with the trackball (never done that before though). Didn't help. I've unplugged and replugged the trackball USB-cable, no help.
I had the Mac Pro unplugged for over a day as I was travelling and the Kensington Expert Mouse too. Behaved exactly the same when I switched on the computer again. I tried resetting the PRAM. Didn't help.
I don't know where the problem lies. The mouse cursor keeps snapping to a position in both the login screen and my user screen. The snap-back position is different in the different screens. The cursor returns to its position when both the Magic Trackpad and the Expert Mouse are connected or when only one of them is. I can move the cursor half a screen, then it snaps back. Clicking functions, but I never have any time to click anything when the cursor bounces back to its spot.
My final remedy would be reinstalling Snow Leopard, but before I try that I would like tro try something less radical. I would also delete the mouse .plist file, but I don't know where it is. I guess that probably would not help, as the cursor behaves crazy even in the login screen, so the user setting should not be the problem.
I've come to the conclusion, that the problem is not a hardware one. The mouse cursor snaps to point on the screen when I use: 1) a Kensington Expert Mouse, 2) a Magic Trackpad, 3) the Magic Mouse that arrived with my computer and when I turned on 4) use keyboard as mouse. The problem also is not tied to a certain user because it appears 1) in the login screen, 2) my user account and 3) the sysop account. I can't figure out where to look for the problem or fix it.

I give up.
I've tried everything I can think of, to fix the behavior of the mouse cursor. I've zapped the pram, I've fixed file permissions, I've removed all startup items, I've tried starting the computer in Safe Mode. No can do.
The mouse cursor snaps back to a position on the screen when I try to move it. This happens within a second, so I might be able to move the cursor half-way across the screen, but that's it. It doesn't matter how fast I move the mouse. The cursor is dysfunctional in the normal user account, the administrator account and in the login screen. It works perfectly fine in Safe Mode.
The mouse cursor misbehaves when using a USB track-ball, the Magic Trackpad or the keyboard with accessibility settings.
After advise received at this site, I tried booting up in Safe Mode and after that the cursor worked for a month or so, but the problem returned. I see no rhyme or reason why the problem appeared for the first place, or why it reappeared. I had originally had two pointing devices the track-ball and the Trackpad connected to my Mac Pro at the same time. After the problem first appeared, I removed the Trackpad. I returned it to use a day before the problem reappeared, but I don't know if that is the cause of the problem. The computer had worked perfectly fine for some months with two pointing devices before the problem appeared.
I've noticed that some other people have had the same problem. One had a feline related fix, which doesn't help me since I don't have a cat. Another fixed the problem by switching off the Internet, but that didn't help me.
What I now would like is to make an official bug-report, so that the problem could be fixed someday. I hope Apple is listening. I also plan to reinstall Snow Leopard (I have 10.6.7) next weekend. I had hoped to install a new OS only when Lion got out, but I don't seem to have much choice not. I can either simply reinstall or make a clean reinstall by erasing the disk in the process. I'd like to avoid reinstalling my programs, but I feel it is safer to wipe everything and start from scratch. Even then, I have no assurance this doesn't happen again.

  • Cursor snap to point in XY graph

    I have trouble in LabWindows/CVI 5.0 to have my cursor snap to a point in an
    XY- graph, even when I set following attributes:
    ATTR_PLOT_SNAPPABLE : TRUE
    ATTR_CURSOR_MODE : VAL_SNAP_TO_POINT
    Besides, also the attribute
    ATTR_ENABLE_ZOOMING seems not to do its job.
    Has anyone tried this before?

    me too.. (see my posting from 02/06/01)
    > also the attribute ATTR_ENABLE_ZOOMING seems not to do its job.
    Had this problem, too. But in my case it was an user's error:
    You have to change the graph input mode to anything else but indicator,
    enable zooming and use zooming by Ctrl + left mouse button.
    I guess, the data mode has to be retain and if you change the contents of
    the original buffer with the data to be plotted, the data has to be copied.
    (ATTR_COPY_ORIGINAL_DATA = True)
    I got it running, finally... ( I use CVI5.5)

  • Using Cursors - snap to point

    Hello everyone,
    I would like some explanation on cursor functionality. I have a cursor on an x-y graph and I would like to use the drag function or enter the co-ordinates and have the cursor snap to this point.
    My x-scale is set in 0.1 increments. I would like to only enter the x co-ordinate and have the cursor snap to the appropriate x-y co-ordinate on the selected plot. If I set it programatically using the 'cursor.posx' property node, the cursor moves to an x co-ordinate 0.1 below the one I set.
    any ideas would be appreciated.
    thanks.

    Apparently, I don't have this kind of problem. Try to compare the attached vi with your own to find out the origin of the different behaviours.

  • Mouse cursor moves to corner of screen

    I have an HP wireless keyboard (PN 578571-001) and companion wireless mouse (PM 578572-001).
    Recently, the mouse pointer has begun moving frequently to the bottom left corner of the screen and then apparently simulating a left-click to activate whatever icon on my Windows 8 task bar it happens to find itself on.  In my case, it is my Windows Explorer, so every few minutes, the Explorer window pops up in my face.
    This is VERY annoying, and I've tried a number of tactics, including re-booting, uninstalling all pointer devices and re-booting (to re-initialize the driver settings), turing off various mouse options in the Control Panel.  Nothing seems to work.
    I've seen from searches in the Internet that other users are experiencing this problem on other HP computers with wireless keyboards and mice.  And it seems to be a software problem.
    What's even more frustrating is that when I enter the part number for my keyboard or mouse on the HP web site, all that is returned is a list of computers...the keyboard and mouse is NOT shown as the separate product that I purchased.
    Does ANYONE know of a sure fix for this problem?

  • Mouse cursor leaping off screen?

    Every now and then, at random, the mouse cursor goes screaming off the screen (a silent scream). A swipe of the mouse brings it back.
    I'm trying to figure what might be causing this, dirty mouse?, heat of mousing hand?, mousing pad?
    Or the devil messing with my head?
    Ben

    Thank you Snapplebook,
    I'll check it out. I rarely have sweaty palms ... but for some strange reason (3,000 miles from my BC home, in Montreal) I'm discovering sweaty palms. Mmmm. Maybe it's the hovering over the laptop. I'm usually working on a tower. That must be it, heat from the laptop.
    Thank you again, I'll check the article. I was once visiting a grow-op in BC. They had these huge shipping barrels of Snapple (the Snapple removed) that they were using for their water supply. I noticed the corp warning tags still attached to the barrels, about how the contents were carcinogenic and proven dangerous to lab rats - or something in that order.
    But Snapplebook may be something entirely different, and have absolutely no relation. I just finished a particularly strong cup of coffee - so the brain is over modulating.
    All the best,
    Ben

  • Change mouse cursor to pointer

    Hello!
    I have an Image control that I use to perform an action on
    click.
    How can I make the mouse cursor change to pointer on
    mouseOver and back to default on mouseOut, please?
    Thank you!

    Assuming you're talking about the hand-pointer cursor, you
    need to set three properties (useHandCursor, mouseChildren and
    buttonMode), as the attached example shows.
    If you want to use a cursor besides the default pointer,
    hand-pointer or busy cursor, then you need to dig further into
    using the CursorManager. It's a little bit of extra work but it's
    not too bad;
    null
    see
    the LiveDocs entry on setting and removing cursors
    Hope that answers your question.

  • Can I use an animated symbol acting like a mouse cursor?

    Hi,
    I'd like to use an EDGE animated symbol ( a blinking magic wand) as my mouse cursor (hiding the original cursor) that stays on the stage all the time at a certain point in the timeline and when clicked on a hotspot, goes to another point in timeline where the symbol no longer act as a mouse cursor. I used the following code suggested in the following thread by YOSHIOKA Ume
    Re: How to I have an animated symbol follow the coordinates of the cursor when clicked?
    1:create a symbol named "Symbol_1"
    2:add this code on Symbol_1-Timeline.complete.
    //delete this instance when timeline complete. sym.deleteSymbol();
    3:add this code on document.compositionReady.
    //on/off mousemove event handler method
    sym.$("Stage")
    .mouseover(function(){
    sym.$("Stage").on("mousemove",draw);
    //create instance of Symbol_1 on stage.
    function draw(evt){
    var instance = sym.createChildSymbol("Symbol_1", "Stage");
    instance.getSymbolElement().css({
    position:"absolute",
    top:evt.clientY,
    left:evt.clientX   });
    But the problem is, the symbol is being repeated/drawn one after another according to the above code, which I don't want. Changing the cursor using CSS requires a URL of a image file, not a symbol inside EDGE as it seems. How can I get back the normal mouse cursor in another point in the timeline (and go back to the animated symbol mode again if needed?). If I click on another hotspot element on the stage, do I actually click on the attached symbol as a cursor? Or the hotspot?
    Also, how can I put a constraint on the cursor so that it stays within a certain rectangular area smaller than the stage?
    A suggestion is much appreciated.

    Here is a example I had to move a symbol around as a mouse cursor and play different part of the symbol timeline based on user action.
    mouseCursor.zip - Google Drive
    To constraint the symbol to stage area,check for the x and y values in the event callback function before moving the symbol.
    To get back the normal cursor set the css back to default
    ex: sym.getSymbol('Stage').getSymbolElement().css({ 'cursor' : 'default'});

  • Animated Mouse Cursor

    Hello,

  • Mouse cursor freezing up

    I am a new iMAC user after many years on a PC. Quite often my mouse cursor freezes up on the screen and my only remedy seems to be to shut down and reboot. This can't be right! There must be a better solution. Can anyone out there assist me?

    I've had the exact same problem ever since I upgraded to Leopard, and the successive updates, including the very latest 10.5.3, have not solved it! I am so disappointed. This is a severe bug. I used to be able to fix it by logging in and out, but today I had to shutdown and restart because my keyboard logout command was not getting through. I can't be sure about this, but it seems as though the problem occurs if I happen to be still be moving the mouse cursor and the logout sequence is engaged. It's as if moving the mouse cursor at this critical time is causing the system to have to keep track of it AT THE SAME TIME the system is trying to kill my user processes. The mouse cursor process ends up dead alright, all the way to the login screen! (Those who are familiar with how UNIX manages processes will understand what I'm talking about.) Please Apple, fix this. Please. This didn't use to happen in Tiger, so how does something like this get broken?

  • Moving xy graph cursor with mouse and programmably controlling snap to point

    Hi,
    I have run into a bit of a problem. I am trying to create a program which allows a user to select a location on an XY graph by simply clicking in the vacinity of the plot. Most of it is working, however I find that I can't programmably control the snap to point function reliably.
    I hope this is a clear outline of the problem:
    - The cursor starts in a Free state, so that when the
    user clicks in the plot area, I can set the cursor
    position to the nearest point by setting the
    CursorPosition using the graph's property node.
    - Maybe the user didn't like the chosen location and
    wants to drag the cursor over a bit. Ok, user drags
    the cursor to a new position.
    - Now th
    e cursor position is probably not exactly on
    the plot trace. If, at this point, I set the cursor
    to Snap To Point, the cursor does not snap to the
    nearest point on the graph (relative to its current
    position), but instead to the last place a _mouse_
    action placed it.
    - Immediately after the new location has been set,
    the cursor state has to be reset to free in case I
    need to programmably move the cursor again (I
    can't seem to programmably control the mouse in
    any state but Free)
    How do I go about getting the cursor to snap to the closest point at it's new location? I'm at a loss.
    Any insight you might have would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks much!
    Tere

    So what is the question about... I have to use XY graph in my program. It is used in Loop while cycle. It shows the statistic of a variable. I am using cursors in this graph to check the actual value of a variable in different period of time. But there are 7 variables and it is extremely hard for user to check each value independently. So I tried to make them moving on the X axis (TIME) together using the property node (cursors reading the position (only X axis, Y axis status lock to plot) of the major cursor and follow it... Everything looks great? But it did not work when I am trying to move the major cursor manually on graph... It works only when I am using the cursor movement buttons... But they work very slowly when there is a lot of data in graph.
    I want to find out is it possible to make seven coursers mouthing together By the X axe and be Locked each at its plot by Y axe manually (Using mouse moving on a graph). Is it possible? If it is than how to do it?

  • New Install - startx results in blank screen with mouse cursor

    I installed Arch on my desktop last week with no issues, so I wanted to install it on an old THinkpad R31. Everything with the installation went smooth, but when I try to 'startx' all I get is a blank screen with a mouse cursor that I can move around. I've installed xorg-xinit, xorg-twm, xorg-xclock, and xterm.
    I'm not getting any significant errors in the logs, or even the terminal I issue 'startx' in.
    I'm not sure what the problem could be...

    According to his first post he has both xorg-twm and xterm installed.
    I do indeed.
    I went ahead and installed LXDE anyways, just to see what would happen. Exact same thing, it looks like everything is about to load but only the mouse cursor shows up. My Xorg.0.log is the same, so I won't post it again.
    I do get an error in the console about the openbox menu.xml file missing but I doubt that's related.

  • Xorg-server 1.6 - black screen with mouse cursor

    Hi
    First of all: I'm really new to Arch, so maybe there is a real easy fix for this problem
    Since upgrading to xorg-server 1.6 (and today to 1.6.1) I'm not able to get a running Desktop Environment.
    Usually I am using gnome with compiz-fusion on my Geforce 4 (nvidia-96xx 96.43.11-4 driver).
    When I boot my machine i see gdm and I am able to login. I can hear my login sound but I only get a black screen with a mouse cursor.
    I added a new test user to my system without compiz and get the same.
    I tried my old xorg.conf from 1.5, generated a new one with X -configure and tried without xorg.conf but everytime the same
    Actually I'm not sure if the xorg update is responsible for this, because i did not watch the upgrade-process....
    I googled this problem and was searching similar things in this froum, but I wasn't able to find something
    Here are some files
    xorg.conf (i know there are some bullshit things in it, but it was workig )

    I'm having a very similar issue. Sometimes, when I boot and type in startx (I'm not even a GNOME user--I use dwm and no graphical login manager), I just get a black screen. No mouse cursor, so I think X doesn't even load. It only started with the xserver 1.6 update and the update to that hasn't changed anything. What I've been doing is just rebooting until it loads normally (takes one to three times). Is anyone else having this problem?

  • Gnome Black Screen with Mouse Cursor after Login

    I am using Archlinux 64bit with a Gnome Desktop Environment. Everything was running normally uptill today. When i ran "sudo fc-cache", my system froze. I couldnt open any other app but i was able to access terminal. I restarted using "reboot" command. After that I was unable to log in to my desktop.
    The Gnome login screen comes and after entering the correct username and password, all I can see is a black screen with mouse cursor. I then started gnome manually with "startx" and it worked. But still I am unable to use normally (that is the graphical login). I reinstalled gdm but it didnt work. Please help me out.

    there are a lot of processess running... dunno killing which process will not cause a problem
    here is the xorg log  ( sorry i dont have much knowlegde to analyse it )

  • Xorg: blank screen, mouse cursor only - ATI Radeon HD3450

    Last friday, my old Nvidia card died (overheated, I think). I got a replacement today: an ATI HD3450 card by Asus (R600 series). This is an old PC with an AGP slot, so my options were unfortunately limited. I was looking for a Nvidia replacement originally, to avoid having to reconfigure stuff, but that turned out to be too hard. So I got an ATI card instead. I regret this decision now... it works fine in console mode, but I can't get it to work in X.
    I've tried radeon and radeonhd drivers. I'm reluctant to try catalyst, seeing as they do not support the current kernel version (2.6.32) and I don't want to downgrade.
    radeonhd (xf86-video-radeonhd) is just a disaster. When I try to start X, all I see is a screen which is mostly black, except for a garbled band of about 1/4th the screen height, mostly white with some random colours thrown in.
    radeon (xf86-video-ati) doesn't work either. When X starts, all I see is the mouse cursor. And nothing else. Just a black screen with a mouse cursor. The funny thing is, it's all there, I just can't see it. When I tried "startxfce4", the cursor would change shapes when it was over window edges or text boxes. But they were invisible. Too bad.
    When I run "startx" as root, I see a couple of twm windows (the default configuration, I normally don't use X as root), and I can interact with them, but it's as if the screen isn't refreshed properly. When I move a window, it isn't redrawn, but it was definitely moved, because when I enter text in it, the text appears at the new position. The 'vesa' driver works, but I can't use that for obvious reasons.
    I have read the wiki article about ATI drivers and tried some of the things mentioned there (no xorg.conf, simple xorg.conf with some combinations of the sections mentioned, ...). I'm pretty sure the problem isn't KMS-related, because it's disabled by default with the 2.6.32 kernel.
    What pisses me off the most is that I get no error messages whatsoever, so I haven't a clue what could be the problem. I'm working on getting some Xorg.0.log output in this thread ASAP.
    Anybody have any idea what could cause this? I would really like to get this working soon. It would kinda suck if it turns out I've replaced an unusable graphics card with another unusable graphics card.
    If the radeonhd problem is easier to solve, then solutions for that are welcome as well. I just need a working driver that can handle compiz, and doesn't require me to downgrade my kernel.
    EDIT: Xorg.0.log contents, enjoy!

    "Enabling KMS will make Xorg fall back to software rasterizing, at the cost of 3D performance. " <- is this still true at the moment? In that case, enabling KMS really isn't the solution I'm looking for. Back to square one
    This is not true.  Software rasterization indicates that KMS was not set up correctly.  You will get 3D acceleration with KMS correctly configured.
    Thanks for taking the time to reply
    I'll give enabling KMS a try. What thread is it that you're talking about? Also should I follow the "early start" or "late start" instructions?
    EDIT: I'm guessing you mean this one? http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=613720
    That thread is the one I meant.
    Your xf86-video-ati doesn't have support for KMS - you have to rebuild it against libdrm_radeon. This also means that you have to rebuild mesa against same new libdrm because mesa doesn't have KMS support without libdrm_radeon either.
    Is this information applicable to my situation? No instructions on how to do this are provided, so I have no idea how to try it, or if it's worth trying at all.
    Yes, this is a problem.  You have to modify a PKGBUILD or two and build/install the packages in the correct order.  I detail the right way to do everything below.
    I used the following packages:
    * kernel26-git: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=25304 (you must configure with CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=m. CONFIG_DRM_RADEON_KMS=y enables KMS by default.  you should be presented with a configuration menu when the package builds.  type '/' to search.)
    * kernel26-firmware-git: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=25782
    * radeon_ucode: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=33016
    * libdrm-git: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=10254 (you must edit the PKGBUILD to enable radeon support, see below)
    * glproto-git: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=18964
    * dri2proto-git: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=19051
    * libgl-git: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=19044 (this is out of date and requires a patch.  see my comment on the AUR page)
    * mesa-git: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=8266 (you can reuse src/mesa from libgl-git, it clones the same repository)
    * xf86-video-ati-git: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=15374 (you can reuse src/mesa from libgl-git)
    libdrm-git PKGBUILD:
    sh autogen.sh --prefix=/usr \
    --enable-nouveau-experimental-api \
    --enable-udev || return 1
    # --enable-radeon-experimental-api
    libdrm-git PKGBUILD modified:
    sh autogen.sh --prefix=/usr \
    --enable-radeon-experimental-api \
    --enable-udev || return 1
    Install those packages in that order and add yourself to the video group.  Make sure that your grub configuration has an option to select the new kernel.  Also make sure all of your PKGBUILDs from AUR are up to date.  A week or two ago they were all wrong (as a noted above, one of them is still wrong and requires a patch).
    I hope that helps.  Eventually Arch will support KMS for radeon by default, but the driver and the kernel need to go through another release or two.
