Mouse freezes in Tiger

Ever since I upgraded to Tiger, my mouse has been freezing. I did a clean reinstall and it didn't help. The only peripherals connect is an Epson printer and an isight camera. It's not a restart type of freeze but I do have to unplug the mouse to continue. Any suggestions?

Try this:
Hit the option key five times. I am embarressed to say that I had to pay the 49.99 fee to apple to help the tech I was talking to figure this one out. Many months ago I was playing around in Universal Access in the system preference's.
Apparently I had set the mouse to do what it was doing... appearing to freeze, no response, turning into a text curser.... etc... (nice setting....ha...lol). After doing 3 clean installs of tiger, I noticed that one of the installs to an external firewire drive was not exhibiting this behavior. As I was explaining this to the tech, he asked if I had done a clean, archival or save user preference. The light went on, and I climbed under neath my desk so that my family would not see how the redness in my face from anger over the 49.99 fee changed to a different shade of red from embarresment. What I don't understand, is why it started happening all of a sudden. It seems some update/install triggered it........ BTW the 5 hits to the option key... turns the wonderful feature off..... Hope this helps .....

  • Mouse Freezing and locking the computer

I have searched this forum regarding mouse freezing. Since updating to 10.4.7 I have the mouse freeze sometimes. The only way I have been able to correct is restart the computer from th power button.
After reading the below post I believe what he is saying when a freeze occurs just hit the optiob key 5 times.
    1. This seems simple.but what is the computer doing to unfreeze by hitting the option Key?
    2. What does he mean by this staement: BTW the 5 hits to the option key... turns the wonderful feature off..... Hope this helps .....
Anyways the next time I get a freeze I will try this. I am under the belief that when the freeze qccurs and you hit the option key 5 times it unlocks the mouse is this correct?
I have been using a kesington 2 button mouse since I had the computer connected via USB
    Thank You

Quicksilver 867 Mac OS X (10.4.3) Report this post

The original Apple Pro mouse cable frays in the chord just as it exits the mouse, over time, and shorts out causing symtoms similar to yours. You can't see the fray by looking at it thru the exterior covering. This can happen to third party mice over time too.
Mine did it. I plugged it into a different port, so the chord exited the mouse in a different direction, and had very few freezes after that. Once I got over my frugalness (cheapness!) I bought a new one. Eventually it got to where I couldn't even work for more then a few minutes without a freeze.
So, try a known good mouse to see if that's the problem.
Don Archibald, a Level 5 here, said the USB ports on the keyboard (for you desktop users) are underpowered and can cause this problem also if the mouse is plugged in there. This can even fry the keyboard sometimes (happened to him). Try plugging your mouse into a port on your monitor or tower.
If you still have trouble post back!
    Cheers!

    Hello USME,
'Tis a common problem on old Macs.
Do as Allan says: open the door and blow out all the dust bunnies. Canned air from Wal-Mart or Radio Shack can be handy (though sort of expensive) especially for blowing through the back of the power supply. A cool Mac is a happy Mac.
Be sure your Mac can breathe. The air intake is on the bottom of the case, so be sure a deep pile rug or too many papers on your desk are not blocking the air supply.
Feel the power supply and the processor with your hand. They should be warm but not hot; if you have to move your hand away, that's too hot!
Check the fan on the power supply, and on the processor if it has one. Take a flashlight and peer in the back of the (Mac) case through  the grille; make sure the fan is turning. If it's not, the power supply won't work for long.
Fans are not considered serviceable, though they will succumb to mechanics of determination. A CPU fan is easy and straightforward.
A fan replacement will not cure an already damaged power supply; the PS may already be done for. Used power supplies for a DA are hard to come by, and not especially cheap when found (c.$50). An entire  working DA or Quicksilver may often be found for under $100 on eBay, and swapping in your HD is easy and simple... this might be cheaper and more expeditious than repairing an expired DA. Replacing a power supply is fairly easy, but it's a nuisance and requires a 2mm Allen head wrench in addition to the usual #2 Phillips head screwdriver.
In my experience, power supplies and CPUs are about equally likely to fail. There are a few other possibilities, but they are not nearly so common.
    Good luck!... Jon

  • Mouse freezes in login window (reproducible)

    Hi,
There are numerous "mouse freezes" topics but I didn't see this exact one. I'm using a ms usb/wireless mouse. It worked fine pre-leopard/tiger. If I continuously move my mouse after I select the "Login Window ..." (from user name of menu bar), the mouse freezes (i.e., the pointer will not move) when the login window appears.
I have to shutdown and restart the mac in order to free up the mouse.
I have a couple of questions and remarks:
    1. Is there another way to unfreeze the mouse?
    2. I've done a restart (command-control-power) but the mouse is still frozen.
    3. I've tried resetting the PRAM and the SMC but problem persists.
    tia.
    rollin'

I have the exact same issue. Sometimes logging out (shiftoption+commandQ) works for me... but yeah, it's really annoying. And my mouse is a USB Apple Mighty Mouse.

  • Mouse Freezes after iPod Update

Just upgraded to Tiger and every time I connect my iPod for updates my mouse freezes and I have to restart the computer. All iPod software has updated recently. What's going on????

I found the following steps will unfreeze the trackpad:
    1. Use Command + Space to launch Spotlight
    2. Type "System Preferences" in Spotlight to open the System Preferences program
    3. Inside of the search field in System Preferences, type "mouse"
    4. Press the "Enter" key to oper the mouse preferences
At this point, the trackpad will unfreeze.
If you leave System Preferences open after you've completed the steps above, when the trackpad freezes again, you can use Command + Tab to bring System Preferences to the top of your windows.  Doing so will unfreeze the mouse.
Very annoying, but better than a reboot if you're presenting in front of people.  I hope Apple fixes this soon.

  • Mouse Freezes on Leopard !!

Anyone else experiencing intermittent mouse freezes on Leopard ?
Every now and again my mouse refuses to move and then suddenly starts working again. Typically freezes for 2 - 10 seconds but I have not figured out whether its anything I do to make it work or whether its just completely random..
This is starting to suck !
So far my list of show stoppers is as follows:
    1. Intermittent Mouse freezes
    2. Address Book no longer supports SMS to mobile even though it is an advertised feature of my MacBook
    3. Address Book no longer has Backup/Restore menu option.
    4. Java Developer Kit 1.6 no longer supported or available

+1. No problems here, either with an Apple O.E.M. mouse or Kensington trackball. What kind of Mouse do you use?+
    Just the MacBook trackpad.
+2. SMS is supported in iChat, not Address Book+
Mmm I can't find this feature in iChat, does it automatically used mobile phone details from Address Book ?
+3. Address Book supports backups & restores through the "Import" & "Export" menu items in the "File" menu.+
Thanks - found that and they have change the naming on the backup file to be YYYY-MM-DD so it now sorts them properly - well done for this fix!
+4. Can't help with the Java issue other than noting that Sun seems to be morphing Java 6 into something with a lot of built-in support for a lot of Windows-only technologies, making the claim of "platform independence" concept a bit hard to accept at face value.+
A bit of show stopper for me so its back to Tiger I go...

  • Mouse freezes when disconnecting from Internet

The mouse freezes when I click on the Disconnect button in the Remote Access Panel. It doesn't happen every time. I can't do anything but turn off the computer then boot it up again. Any ideas?
Power Mac G4 Cube   Mac OS 9.0.x

    Hi, Fuggles -
Since the mouse freezing appears to be specific to an action in OS 9, it should not carry over to OSX.
Some concerns about installing Tiger (OSX 10.4) -
    • Firmware
Be sure you have updated the firmware in that machine before installing OSX. You can download the appropriate firmware updater from this Apple KBase article -
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75129
    <hr>
    • OS 9 version
The preceding firmware update installs only when the machine is running OS 9.1 or OS 9.2.x from its hard drive. And, if you plan to use OS 9 as Classic under OSX, it must be at least OS 9.1; OS 9.2.x provides better compatibility for that mode.
Therefore, you should update your OS 9.0.x to at least OS 9.1, and perhaps to OS 9.2.x. You can do that using download updates, which you can get from these Apple pages -
Article #75103 - Mac OS 9.1 - Download and Info
Article #120030 - Mac OS 9.2.1 - Download and Info
Article #75186 - Mac OS 9.2.2 - Download and Info
Note that those must be installed in sequence; none can be skipped. However, you can skip the need to obtain one or more of those large downloads if you get a retail OS 9.1 or a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD, and do a direct install of that version.
    <hr>
    • Startup Disk
The version of Startup Disk control panel that comes with OS 9.1 and earlier is not capable of 'seeing' OSX as a valid OS, hence switching to OSX from OS 9.1 or earlier can be difficult. However, there is a solution - download and install a replacement control panel, which can be got from this article -
Startup Disk 9.2.1 Document and Software
Note - in spite of what that article states, that replacement control panel will work in OS's earlier than OS 9.1; it as been tested successfully in OS's as old as OS 8.6. It is not needed for OS 9.2.1 or later.
    <hr>
    • RAM
The requirements for Tiger state a minimum of 256MB of physical RAM; a minimum of 512MB is more realistic. More RAM is better.
OSX is much pickier about RAM than OS 9 is. If your machine has any after-market (non-original) RAM in it, it would be a good idea to download and run DIMM First Aid. That utility can do some basic tests, but more important;y it can repair some sub-spec modules so that they are compliant with Apple's specs.
Note - do this before installing the firmware update mentioned above.
    <hr>
    • Hard drive space
Tiger will need about 3GB in order to install, and runs best when there is an additional 5GB of unused space on the drive (it uses that space for its version of virtual memory, swap files, defragging on the fly, etc.). It would be best if your hard drive has at least 8GB unused space on it before installing Tiger.

  • PLEASE REVIEW THIS LOG REPORT 4 COMP/KEYBOARD/MOUSE FREEZE..FANS CYCLE FAST

    MY COMP STATS ARE BELOW..
as of late my g5 on random occasion will freeze up, the keyboard and mouse freeze, the caps lock button will not light up, plugging in new mouses wont work, the fans speed up like **** coming to earth..none of the keyboard shortcuts work. my only option is to keep dpoing a hard shutdown by holding the power button. i dont have any new recently installed software..
    - the light near the power button that is suppose to blink a color code to advise of certain issues is not blinking at all, nor has it changed color.
    - the freezes happen at random..sometimes not for days or a week and today it happened twice in 2 hours..
    - and my apple warranty is up..
    - i have recently started using a hp photosmart C4480 printer/scanner which i did not install any software..it worked plug and play.
im not overly computer tech savy..i posted the log from after a freeze down below..
IF ANYONE IS GOOD WITH READING THE LOGS MAYBE YOU CAN TELL ME OR DECIPHER WHAT MAY BE CAUSING THE FREEZES??
i see some messages that look like its a bad thing or something is outdated but i dont know what exactly its referring too..maybe some experianced user can point something out?
    - maybe a software upgrade or removal is needed?
if i did not post enough info for u to access my issue let me know what else you need to know please...system specs..software..whatever..
i cant afford to upgrade to 10.4 and the system is showing no hardware issues when i run the hardware scanning disc..
i cannot seem to find my utility disc to run those scans..any place i can download anything to do other scans,,

  • Keyboard and mouse freeze randomly

My keyboard and mouse freeze up for 2-4 seconds at seemingly random intervals.  I could go for a couple hours without it happening, or like now, it has happened twice while writing this.  If I'm typing something when it freezes, nothing I type while it's frozen ends up showing up, but if I had hit a key right when it froze, it will repeat itself until I press something else after it unfreezes.  They keyboard and mouse both freeze at the same time, it's not one or the other.  It has nothing to do with standby like the topic below...it can happen right after I boot up or anytime thereafter.
My hardware is an eMachines M6805 laptop (upgraded to 2GB of RAM) and just a basic Dell USB mouse and keyboard.
I tried searching the forums, but the search box on here searches the entire web for some reason even if I tell it to search TechNet, so I apologize if this has already been answered.

I just had my Desktop freeze whilst I was using Media Player minimised to the taskbar.
I came back to my PC and couldn't use the keyboard or mouse. I plugged in a wired USB mouse and this did not work either. I then used the mouse and keyboard buttons on my MCE remote and still nothing happened, actually something happened as my hard drive
became very busy, but there was nothing happening on screen. I had to reboot to get back to normal operation.
I use a Logitech Bluetooth MX500 keyboard and mouse and have been having problems since I had Windows 7, but thought it was the keyboard and mouse at fault. This is the first time that I have encountered this problem, but I have had problems with the keys
sticking, very annoying when you're in Visual Studio and it goes and deletes a load of code for you because the backspace key was the one that stuck. The cursor also randomly jumps lines occasionally and inserts text where I don't want it. This wouldn't be
such an issue if I was a touch typist and could look at the screen whilst typing, but I am not and only realise the errors when I have finished typing.
Anyway, Mine is a custom built PC(all drivers and windows fully up to date) which ran XP with zero problems:
Gigabyte mboard and graphics card (Nvidia) with I5 processor and 4GB ram.
If this was a USB hub Powersave issue, then I would still expect the hub to wake up when a new device was pugged in, so I'm going to count that fix out.
I'm not sure that the freezing was a mouse/keyboard fault, I suspect that this is more a video driver fault as the computer did become very busy doing something when I used the MCE remote, it's just the screen didn't update to show what it was doing.
I should have looked at the taskbar clock to see if the time had updated, I'll do that next time if it happens again.
I've disabled the Power Save options for the hub that controls the mouse and keyboard, perhaps this will stop the keys sticking and jumping around when I'm typing in Visual Studio.

  • Mouse Freezes in After Effects

So sometimes when I'm editing in After Effects, everything will be fine for a little while. Then, randomly, my mouse will stop moving. I've no idea why. I don't think it's my computer because everything else is fine.
I know it's not my computer that freezes because when I hit the windows key on my keyboard (I have a Windows 8 Tosihba laptop) the grid pops up and the animation of the email app and the other apps move fine. Yet my mouse just doesn't move.
Also, I'm able to use the volume keys, brightness keys and everything else....just my mouse won't move!
There is a a kye on my keyboard that allows me to enable/disable my mouse pad but I've tried hitting it a few times and it still doesn't work when my mouse freezes.
Sometimes my mouse will start working again on it's own but most of the time I just have to restart my computer.
The reason I believe it's After Effects is because it only ever happens in that software. It never happens in anything else. It doesn't even happen in Photoshop or Flash.
I also have a trail of Premiere and today it happened again in that software. Is it something in the files that's messing with my mouse?
I tried reinstalling the softwares but that didn't seem to change anything.
I chatted with someone from Adobe a while ago about it and they are actually the ones who suggested maybe it's the software. When I was chatting with them, I actually just started the chat about a different issues and just asked about my mouse in passing and I didn't have time to really discuss it and I've been meaning to revisit the issue but I've been busy haha.
I think I may have to go chat again with an agent but I thought I'd just write the issue here in case someone had an answer and I could skip chatting, espcially if it's something I could just fix.
Thanks for your help in advance!
And if you need to know (because it always seems to be the first question asked on software forums like this! haha) here are my tech specs.
Computer Model --- Toshiba Satellite L875D-S7332
    Processor ----------- AMD A6 - 4400M APU with Radeon(tm)
                                       HD Graphics 2.70 GHz
    RAM ----------------- 6.00 GB (5,46 GB usable)
    System Type ------ 64 - bit Operating System, x64 - based processer

    Thanks for replying Rick!
I'm refering to my mouse pad on my laptop. However I also have a wacom pen tablet that I use as well and it acts as a mouse. Usually that one works over the built in mouse pad of my laptop, but most times neither work.  And the tablet is just plugged in with a usb cable.
I try not to run too many softwares at once but if I do, it's usually After Effects and...Google Chrome. Maybe Photoshop - in case I need to make up some images to import into After Effects, but most of the time it's After Effects and Google Chrome only.
I had After Effects on my old computer (It was a dell inspiron 1500 I believe...I don't remember but After Effects was barely able to even run on it!) I had my Toshiba (I mentioned the specs in the first post) for about a year and only reinstalled After Effects about half way through the year of 2013. I noticed it happened a copule of times but didn't think much of it. There was a time perdio where  I didn't need After Effects for a while (like a couple of monthes) but sometime...in Dec. I think, I used After Effects and I noticed it started to happen again.
It's really paculiar because it only happens in After Effects, and I only started using Premiere this week, and I noticed it happend there too. That's why I decided to post in the forum. It's really werid!

  • Mouse freezes up!

  • Mouse freezes periodically upon start up.

I have a Mac Pro. Every once in a while my mouse freezes in the upper left hand corner of my display upon start up. I am now using a Logitech MX Revolution cordless mouse. Prior to that I was using a Logitech MX500. It was not cordless. The MX500 never froze on my G4, but on my Mac Pro it does periodically. So I bought the MX Revolution and it still freezes upon start up. Then when I restart, everything is fine. I would say it happens once every ten times I start.
    Any ideas?

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

  • Mouse Freezes

I have a Mac running 10.8 and my mouse freezes after a period of time.  The only that I can unfreeze it is to restart the computer.  Any suggestions for a fix?

If this is an Apple Mouse, that'd be my forst suspect, do you have another to test with, but...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for mouse problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • G5 Power pc mouse freezes after startup

I have a liquid cooled power pc G5 that won't start up intermittently. I have been going through the threads on apple discussions and finding the same problems I am having. I have tried most all of the suggestions and still cannot get results. I had put the mac to sleep a few weeks ago and when i came bacck to it later in the day the fans were blazing so i shut it down and have never been able to get it to come back up without the mouse freezing on me after about 2 minutes or so. I can get it to work and get so far then the freeze comes and i have to power down the start button. Any more options any one can think of would help please.

    Joe, is it overheating?
Can you start in Safe Mode, (holding SHIFT key at bootup & have it run longer?
Have you blown the dust out lately?
