Mouse Frozen On Start-Up

I recently upgraded to 10.2. I ran all of the updates, which brought me to 10.2.8. I restart and the mouse is frozen in the upper left corner by the blue apple. I am using a logitech wireless mouse and keyboard. I know it is not the mouse or keyboard because they both work fine on my pc, and worked fine before I ran all of the updates. I know it is not the port because I have tried different mice and they don't work either. I also know it is not the port because if I put the OS X disc in, when the installer pops up the mouse works just fine. This is the second time this has done this. I reinstalled once after this happened the first time, but it came back at the exact same time, right after running updates and reaching 10.2.8. I've trolled the forums and tried a few things, but nothing seems to be working. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Brandon

You're Welcome Brandon!
To reiterate previously posted questions;
-What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is avaialble?
-How much RAM is installed, and is it original or added?
-Did you use the Jaguar Full Retail Version CDs?
-Which of the two Mac models below, do you have?
Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White)
Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White) with SCSI
And some additional queries;
-Did you create a new user account, as Allan Jones suggested?
-Did you follow Allan Jones recommendation, about the Logitech driver, that he posted HERE?
"I tried performing the firmware update."
-What OS were you started from when you did that?
-Do you have a backup of the system?

  • Computer frozen /mouse frozen on G4 in 10.2.2

I use my old G4 for storage and old files I need.
It went to sleep and would not come back up. I turned it off by using the start button on the computer held for 5 seconds.
it came up but mouse frozen in the left corner.
I opened the cd holder and put in the first disk of the jaguar on 10.2.2 and killed the computer with the start botton again. Then I booted up. Same problem. I could not use mouse so could not go to the disk repair.
My hard drive is partitioned to have os 9 and os 10.
I tried a safe boot. no luck wiht mouse moving I tried holding down the c key with the os 10 install disk 1 of 2 in, it only comes up as a window and doesn't boot from the cd.
    I tried apple-tab.
now I can't eject the install disk and I can't get mouse to work and I am sunk. No chimes of doom, everything boots like normal, looks normal but the mouse won't move.
Can I at least find a way to open the cd holder and take out the install disk?
Any suggestions? i don't want to reinstall the system as the purpose is to use this computer to get to os 9 apps I need for work + as a storage disk- I use my macbook pro for other stuff.
if I reinstall the system, I have to get the install disk out or to at least boot in the system on the disk...

    update:
I got the computer to come up in the installation software (after 5 minutes) by holding down c key, but I still can't mover the mouse to get to the install button to install a new system.

But It is so annoying each time. Does anyone have any idea of it?
Other Keys works well, only those line of 4 keys got stuck. Thx in advance

this should not be happening, maybe one of your addons is interfering?! - can you try running firefox in safemode or with all extensions disabled for a while and see if this behaviour is still there...

  • Macbook Pro Frozen upon start up

    Hi There,
I am hoping someone may help with a frozen screen. First I am not very technical, so bear with me. I am also new to the Mac World.
Yesterday I was using network diagnostics to determine why I could not get online (turns out it was a provider problem). During the diagnostics I attempted to quit it, with no success. At that point I powered the machine off, because I did not want to continue (I know very stupid).
When I attempted to restart, it began normally with starting OS X and the gray gear wheel spinning. The gear wheel stopped spinning and up popped a blue screen. It never asked me to sign in, just skipped to the blue screen. My mouse pointer still works, but nothing else exists on the blue screen.
I than tried resetting the original settings by removing the power adapter, battery and holdng down the power button for atleast 5 seconds. No luck.
I also installed the start up disk and ran first aid. It came back no repairs needed. I assume I ran it properly. I asked it to scan the hard drive for needed repairs.
I anticipate having to reinstall start up disk 1 to correct the problem. However, I have not recently backed up (again dumb), and now without the ability to boot the hard drive I can not backup; or atleast I have no idea how to at this point.
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi, dbrian. Welcome to the Discussions.
    1. You wrote: "I also installed the start up disk and ran first aid. It came back no repairs needed. I assume I ran it properly. I asked it to scan the hard drive for needed repairs."To verify if you performed the steps properly, and to add some additional steps that may help, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    2. An errant Startup or Login Item maybe the cause. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
    3. To rule out the possibility that the initial hang when quitting Network Diagnostics was not hardware related, run the Apple Hardware Test that came with the computer. See my "Apple Hardware Test" FAQ for comprehensive advice on using the Apple Hardware Test in troubleshooting, including running the test in Loop Mode.
    Good luck!

  • Magic Mouse Frozen

I bought a 27" IMac in April, received it in May and yesterday, the mouse needed new batteries for the fourth time. I replaced the batteries and it worked fine for several hours, then it started acting strangely for a few minutes. It was lagging ... not picking up on commands and then it froze. The scrolling still worked, but the cursor won't move at all. Not knowing what had happened, I restarted the computer. No change. Still frozen.
I opened a new package of batteries and changed the batteries again ... thinking perhaps I got some bad batteries. No change. Still frozen. I ran down to a different store and bought more batteries. Tried those. Nothing. Turn the mouse on and off several times ... reboot the computer several times ... nothing. The green light on the mouse comes on, then it blinks for several minutes and then it shuts itself off. It is not connecting at all.
I figured, perhaps something was wrong with the mouse itself. Since I live in the British Virgin Islands where getting parts is a real problem ... I bought three Magic Mouse(s) as well as a spare wireless keyboard when I bought the new computer. So I turned off the mouse, removed the batteries, unpackaged a brand new mouse and tried to pair it with my IMAC. No go!
My IMAC and my business are dead in the water. I dusted off my old macbook Pro laptop in order to post this message. I run an internet based business and have no way to correspond with my clients as all my email (and their files) are on my Imac ... none of which I can access!
Man, I really wish I had a corded mouse I could switch to ... but I don't. This is a disaster! I don't have a clue what to do to get back up and running. It is 5:45 in the morning and I have been up all night trying to fix this problem. I open for business at 8:00 a.m. and I simply can't do a thing!
    HELP!!!

Well my tech guy just left with $150.00 of my money. Apparently after a whopping three months, my mouse is actually dead! I was apparently trying to pair the new one without first disposing of the old one in Bluetooth ... which is why it didn't work when I tried it. He tried and tried to get the original mouse working again but no go. It is dead.
I sure as heck hope this next one works for more than 3 months! I have 1 more to go if this new one dies on me. If they die at the same rate, I can assure you that I will be reconsidering my allegiance to Apple products which I have used exclusively for the past 15 years. This is my 11th computer and although I am happy enough with the new IMAC, I am less than impressed with a few things that have already gone wrong.
I also just discovered that the CD Rom on my laptop no longer works. Now that's just crazy because that machine is only ever used for emergency purposes such as when my mouse freezes! It's not like it has had any heavy wear and tear and it wasn't exactly cheap!
Not very happy right now, though I am happy that I had the forethought to buy extras ... just in case ... but I certainly didn't think "just in case" would happen quite so soon! Truly unbelievable. I hope this is just a "one off", bad luck type of thing and that this new one will last at least a year or two! My old mighty mouse is still going strong after 2 years.
    Grrrrr.

  • Mouse frozen

Hi: I have a G5 ( 2003 ) that when I start it up the bluetooth mouse pointer remains frozen. I have tried restarting, smu and pram resets. Any suggestions??

Does the mouse cursor move if you connect a regular USB mouse?

  • Blue Screen & mouse frozen after sleep

Problem: After my G5 PowerPC tower wakes up from sleep, the mouse will not work. After approx. 1 minute, my screen goes blue and the computer is frozen.
This all seemed to start immediately after I did the most recently iPhone software and iTunes update--don't know if its just a coincidence or not, but that's when it started.
I've done the Disk Utility fix and then a Install & Archive from the Install disk (OS 10.5), Nothing. Its still doing this crash ONLY after the computer wakes up from sleep.
Does this mean I have to do a complete fresh reinstall of the OS and start from scratch???
    H E L P ! ! ! ! ! !

I just bought the magic mouse and did the new update (Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0) for it to work on my machine. I also updated my iTunes at the same time. Everything seemed to work fine until my computer went to sleep. I woke the computer and my desktop showed up just fine, then about 5 seconds later I got the blue screen.
The only thing I have been able to do is just do a hard reset. I repaired my disk permissions and the same problem continues.
I tried the advice above (create a new user account) but that did not work.
    Any ideas...

  • Safari frozen on start-up, won't open

This morning, Safari spontaneously started freezing when I try to open it. Nothing new, haven't updated it recently. Everything was working fine then all of a sudden it's not working anymore. I click the Safari icon in the dock, I see the Safari menu bar at the top of the screen, but the browser window never appears and I just get the pinwheel. Totally frozen.
    I repaired permissions, but that's didn't help.
    I deleted Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist, but that's didn't help.
I tried to locate the most recent crash logs for Safari in Home/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Safari.crash.log, but there were no crash logs for the recent freezes (most recent crash log dates from mid-july).
    HELP?

Tengen, do NOT try to delete Safari, you will only make matters worse.
All downloads of Safari 3.1.2 are updaters. The reason why Safari will not install on Leopard is that this Safari update was included in the Leopard 10.5.5 updater.
The only way you, on Leopard, can reinstall safari is to use your install disk to install the version that is on there, then update it in the usual way.
Deleting applications and reinstalling them is NOT the Mac way, that is a Windows thing!
If your Safari won't open, one or more of the following procedures should fix it:
    1. Go to Home/Library/Safari/ folder and remove the following two files:
    • history.plist
    • lastsession.plist
(Safari may not load properly If these two files are corrupted.)
    2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/ and remove the contents of that folder.
(These are just webhistory files and are not required for Safari to run. However, similar to preference files, problems can arise if they have become corrupt.)
    3. Locate the cookies.plist file that's located in the Home/Library/Cookies/ folder and remove it.
(Again, faults in stored cookies may interfere with Safari's launch.)
    4. Check whether any of your third-party internet plug-ins may be interfering with the launch of Safari by carefully moving them to the desktop (do NOT delete them at this stage). You can find these in two places:
Home/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ folder, and Global plug-ins are located in the Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/ folder.
Restart Safari and place them back in the correct folders, one at a time, closing and re-opening Safari each time. If you discover that one of them was causing the problem with launching Safari, trash it and download and install a fresh copy.

  • Mac get hangs or frozen on start Up always

    Hi,
The problem occurs after, when I have updated my mac mini to 10.8.4, when mac start it always hangs up and its mouse dosen't work, what i need to do then is to press power button to take machine in sleep mode, then again I need to press power button to wake up machine. After this it works normally.
But Apple products should not provide such kind of updates. Your team should provide some solutions.
Let me know if you can check my machine by taking it on remote.
I have purchase machine in Nov 2012. And I am very disappointed with the latest update. It is very bad. You guys should help to solve this problem
    Regards,
    Moiz.

    Hello Moiz,
We're just other users here trying to help, you can call Apple to try to get it fixed, but might try this...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • Stutter noise and flashing mouse pointer upon starting or restarting

    Hi,
Please help me with an issue:
Upon starting or restarting computer, pointer starts flashing with a stutter noise (at the same rhythm) also pointer selects items randomly, or won't select any.
One temporary but not permanent fix is if I deactivate then reactivate Adobe Shockwave via Firefox.
    Thanks so much,
    Lynn

Thank you for your response - I'll give it a go.
Also, just to update, my iMac cursor seems to glitch a little bit less now. It seems that at least ONE of my problems may have been caused by sitting my iPhone upon my WACOM tablet. The tablet must receive some sort of disruption from having my phone on it - and removing it seems to remedy a fraction of my mouse-jumping problems - if only for a meanwhile.
The mouse cursor still does jump around on its own occasionally, and the other mouse problems do persist - so this must not be the only culprit for my array of problems.

  • N8 frozen at start-up on 2nd day after Nokia Belle...

    Hello,
I bought my phone in Aug 2011. Have been enjoying it for over 6 months now. Updated to Symbian Anna in Oct 2011 (I think) and been using it without any issues. Yesterday afternoon I updated to Nokia Belle, installation was successfull, no issues at all, spent the rest of the day customizing the phone n stuff.. Today evening, while listening to the songs, the phone suddenly restarted, but it wouldn't start up now.. That Nokia hand-shaking animation comes and after that phone is just frozen with the screen showing only the wallpaper, nothing else, no menus, no icons, nothing! In the Notification area on the top, I see "Offline" (coz I removed the sim card), network icon with a "x" next to it and an empty bettery icon. I don't see why the battery would be empty coz before I started listening to the songs, it was 50% and so I was charging it while listening to the songs. Now since about 2 hours I've been trying to switch off the phone and start it, but no use.. It restarts n is stuck on that wallpaper. The backlight of the menu button is on for a few seconds after restart, but then it goes off and even if I tap on the screen or toggle the lock key, nothing happens. I have already tried "hard reset" as given on one link I found on google.. http://mynokiablog.com/2010/10/12/how-to-hard-reset-your-nokia-n8/comment-page-2/#comments
Another thing I found is something about "XXXXXX Software" on this site -
Has anyone tried it? Would it help in my situation?
Please tell me what to do? Is there anything else I can try? I have some private data on phone, so I'm a little hesitant of giving it to service centre. Is there any way to format the data or something. I tried connecting the USB, while the phone is in that frozen state, but it doesn't get recognized on computer. Please help!

Please do not discuss or distribute illegal software on the official Nokia forums.

I successfully used Advanced Device Locks Pro, and later Security lock on my previous phones (N86/N82). Recently I bought from Nokia Store the newest version of SL. It worked on Symbian Anna without problems. After Belle update I got after few reboots serious problem... Phone Menu could not be accessed in any way. Failure resulted 4 times, so I'm now convinced that it is caused just by the SL application.
Now I have returned all the applications that I previously used, (except SL) and the phone works, and it can be run repeatedly. I found out that Security Lock is obviously incompatible with the current v. of Symbian Belle. Diagnosis and identification of the problem required 4 times triple code format included FW reinstallation.
The problem itself: after installing Security lock on the N8-00 Symbian Belle a phone restart was done correctly. After another reboot, or simply switch off the phone with active Security lock protection, only a blank window appeared with a basic wallpaper without any context menu options or the possibility of inserting security code.
The phone did not respond to any touch, soft keys were not initialized at all, only turning off using 10 sec. long press was possible. There was absolutely nothing to help. I tried to uninstall the application through PC Suite, but it was protected against the uninstall by a computer. Removing other programs in that way works. So the advantage of the security application turned against the user, and I managed to solve the problem only using triple code. I tried to describe the problem as precisely as possible, I hope you manage to solve these difficulties. In addition, I installed the current Belle v. 111.030.0609 on absolutely clean formatted phone without any data from the previous applications in *sys  and * private folders.

  • MOUSE FROZEN - CURSOR GONE!!

I have a big problem now with a frozen mouse and disappeared cursor! While in Mac OS 9.2.2, not Classsic, a full verison of 9.2.2, (although version 10.2.8 is also installed), I was just trying to drag and drop about 19 files totalling about 31 GB of data from my old La Cie Firewire external hard drive to my brand new LaCie 250 GB external hard drive. Just prior to this, I had successfully done this same procedure with another old LaCie Firewire external hard drive to this new one. Now I can budge neither the mouse nor the missing cursor, and I hate to restart the computer, (scary!), as both Firewire drives' icons are open, though nothing is processing. If I restart, will I damage the drives or data? Please advise a.s.a.p!! Thanks a lot!!
PowerMac G3   Mac OS 9.2.x   1 GB RAM, 3 internal SCSI drives, 2 external La Cie Firewire drives

    Hi, brainbytes -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
First try a software reset (force quit the running app, which includes Finder) - press the key combo Command-Option-Esc. If that works, you may regain control with Finder, at which point do a normal Restart.
If it doesn't work, the machine will stay frozen.
It is okay to do a force restart using the button on the computer - doing so should not damage the firewire drive(s). Firewire drives do not need to be unmounted prior to restarting or shutting down.
However, given that the freeze happened in the midst of a copy process, some damage may occur to the disk's directory, which may then need to be repaired. OS 9's Disk First Aid can not repair a firewire drive; OSX's Disk Utility can. Better would be to use a stronger utility such as Alsoft's DiskWarrior.
Since you have OSX on the machine, do not use Norton Utilities.

  • Add Mouse - Cannt move start point

    Captivate v5.5
A work colleague using v5.5 is unable to move the start point of the mouse pointer trail they add to a slide using Insert/Standard Object/Mouse or the insert mouse tool bar.
They can move the pointer end to place they want it to finish but unable to grab and drop the start point and place it where they want the mouse to start from.
I have tried it on my v5.5 and it works OK for me.
Any ideas please as to what she needs to do - or why this might be ?
    Noel

    Hi Noel,
If you are using mouse pointers in more that one slide, then the end point of the mouse pointer on the first slide, becomes the start point on the second and so on.
This is done to keep the continuation of the mouse pointer across the slides.
