Mouse loses connection

I have a Mac Mini and a few months ago I started having problems with the Magic Mouse losing its connection to the computer.  If I wait a few minutes it comes back but in one hour it may drop the mouse 3-4 times. I have used new batteries and even went to the extend of buying a new mouse thinking that it was my old mouse.  But that wasn't the problem because this is even happening with the brand new mouse.  What I notice first is that the mouse's responsiveness starts to change--it isn't as responsive. Then the next thing I see is "Connection Lost."  I have gone into Utilities and have checked that the disk is OK and all my permissions are right.  I was thinking of simply reinstalling the OS but would like to see if others have suggestions.  Also, I don't know if this is related or not but I have a wireless printer that seems to work fine for a while and then it too will drop the connection and the printing will stop only to restart a while later.  Suggestions?

I might have actually figured out the problem.  Even re-installing the OS did not help. I still got printer errors and my mouse still moved real slow at times and would lose connectivity.  So I hard-wired the printer to the network and turned off the WiFi on the printer. I still got "communication errors".  Then I turned off WiFi on my Mini (it is hard wired to the network), uninstalled the printer, rebooted and reinstalled the printer (although I kept WiFi off for now).  The mouse has worked perfectly well for over an hour and I have printed numerous documents with no problems.  I will let this run for another day and if all is well I will turn WiFi back on on the printer. But for now it looks like running the WiFi on the Mini was causing the problem.
Thanks for the suggestions, Illaass. They helped getting me to think about conflicts.  I do want to look at my router and see if I can set it to only run on the 5 GHz bandwidth and see if that helps. But I don't need WiFi on the Mini so if keeping it off solves my problem then I am happy.

My Magic mouse loses connection during sleep mode. I also get error message my external usb storage drive was disconnected improperly. I have to unplug and plug in drive generally, sometimes it is still present. For the mouse I generally turn it off and on and allow it to be found again.

This is a late 2009 imac.

There's already a thread on this with almost the same title:
    Magic Mouse Loses Connection
One idea (discussed in that thread) is that not all batteries are created equal in that the positive terminal varies in size among different brands and "flatter" ones are not making contact all the time.  One solution was to add a little ball of aluminum foil between the negative size (I assume) to take up the "slack".

  • My Magic Mouse Loses Connection Every Single Minor Tap

My Magic Mouse tends to lose its connection whenever I give it a tap on the table. I mean, it's normal right, when you lift the mouse a little bit and tap it to the surface to give the pointer a little more distance like browsing the web or playing a computer game. My Magic Mouse seems to lose its connection everytime it gets a minor tap on the table and no, I don't slam it hard.
It's not a battery problem since I change them frequently so I'm guessing it's either the hardware problem or the Bluetooth problem. Any idea what's causing this?

Actually I believe it is a battery problem.  Specifically, not all batteries are created equally and vary from brand to brand so with the tolerances as tight as they apparently are in (or are not) in the MM the positive terminal does not always make contact with the MM terminal.
Based on other posts in these forums the positive terminal varies slightly among brands.  Some are higher than others.  It's a minor amount but it appears to be enough.
I've seen this with my neighbor's MM.  Brand new batteries (forget the brand at the moment) yet I could shake the MM and have it make and break contact.  On the other hand I don't have the problem with my Sayno Eneloop rechargeables.
You might try inserting a small piece of paper or aluminum foil to take up the gap.
Another possibility is that the contacts are corroded so try to clean them a little.

  • My Mac OS X 10.6.8 is wakes up slow, occasionally hangs, and my mouse loses connectivity fairly often.

Recently my Mac has been waking up very slow. It runs all applications slowly when I first start using it. It seems to be better after that. My mouse also loses connectivity several times a day, even with new batteries. Not sure if that is related. When I try to restart it Safari often won't close even when I force it.

I ran Etrecheck and this was the result.

  • Mighty Mouse loses connection since 10.6.8 update

Hi I have recently installed the 10.6.8 OSX upgrade in preparations for the Lion release and I am having problems with Mighty Mouse losing connection.
Basically the mouse operates fine until the mouse is static whereby it loses connection, I then have to wiggle the mouse around and click the mouse to regain connectivity, if the mouse remains still for even a second it just drops again.
I have tried changing batteries, removing both my mouse and keyboard from the bluetooth preferences, adding them as favourites as well as doing the PRAM and SMC resets.
I only assume the problem is linked with 10.6.8 update because prior to this update the mouse was working without a hitch.
My keyboard appears to be working without the same problem.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

I encountered the same problem as you report after the upgrade to 10.6.8 on both my family's MacBook Pros. I had no problem with my MM up to that point. Thereafter, the MM would not work I went thru' the same steps as you did to try and overcome the problem. It pairs OK and says it is connected but the MM will not work. If you switch off the MM, a message is received "Connection Lost". The keypad mouse works as does an USB mouse, but no MM despite numerous attempts at resetting, clearing, replacing batteries, bluetooth reset, etc..  I am as baffled as you were and put the fault down to the SL upgrade, but I suppose the upgrade may (somehow) have blown the MM, but it still lights up and says it is connected!!. WEIRD!

  • Apple mouse loses connection

My iMac's magic mouse persistently loses its bluetooth connection for intervals ranging from seconds to several minutes. This has been a problem since shortly after I got the Mac (2010), and I've replaced the mouse twice. It works for a while, and then the problem resurfaces. The last couple of days the mouse seems to go to sleep whenever the computer does and takes up to five minutes to reestablish its connection. The battery level is at 100%. There's nothing new on my desk that would cause interference. Any ideas?

I've read with interest this and various other threads on this problem.  Over the past few months my Magic Mouse has been losing connections very frequently - it's not the batteries!  Having plowed through various threads in this forum, there was a suggestion to delete some file /Macintosh HD/library/preferences/com.apple.bluetooth.plist.  Alas, under Maverick (10.9.*), this file seems to be protected.  However, I found another way to resolve the probelm:
Just remove the Mouse and let the Mac "find" the mouse again: System Preferences->Bluetooth to display the device.  Click on the x next to the mouse.  If you wait a few seconds after that, the Mac rediscovers the Mouse again.  I haven't lost connections for several hours now, and that's a first!

  • Magic mouse loses connection with iMac

My brand new imac came with magic mouse. I immediately updated to mountain lion. Magic mouse occasionally drops connection and then reconnects after some time. During the time of disconnection I am unable to do any thing. Please tell me what to do.

Sound like my issue with the magic mouse. I notice the indicater green light was off when i lost lost my connection. Once I reinstalled the batteries the light would glow and my connection was temportarly restored. After losing my connection again; I reseated the batteries but I added a small cushion of folded paper. I made sure my cushion wasn't too thick so to allow for the battery cover. After my small mofication my mouse has not lost connection for over several weeks.

  • Magic Mouse Loses Connection

My Magic Mouse keeps losing its connection. Has any one else had this happen to them. I reapplied the update and had gone through the set again but the connection repeatedly is lost. Luckily I still have my wired mouse plugged in or my IMAC would be useless.

I was having the same problem... getting a real mouse with a cord fixed the problem instantly... the magic mouse is without question the worst thing to come out of apple since the mighty mouse... the connection goes in and out all day long... probably spent 10 minutes out of every hour waiting for lost connections... when it does work, you feel as though you have to press twice as hard, and hold on for dear life to keep the mouse working... I see the might mouse like dating the best looking girl in college even though she's as dumb as a fence post... it takes a long time to get past her looks, but once you do and dump her for something good looking and brighter, your life is a thousand times better... the amount of trouble a dumb girlfriend or rotten mouse provides isn't worth hanging it... avoid the magic mouse at all costs... it's not worth the trouble... it should be noted i lost the connection TWICE writing this post...

  • Magic mouse loses connection with laptop unless laptop connected to charger

So, I've been seeing people have various problems with the Magic Mouse in Lion, but I haven't seen anyone with the exact problem as me. I lodged it as a bug with Apple, but I wondered if anyone has the same problem and maybe a solution.
I have an original MacBookAir and a Magic Mouse. Since upgrading to Lion, the Magic Mouse will only stay steadily connected to the laptop if I have the laptop plugged in and on the mains charger. If I am running the laptop on battery, the mouse disconnects and becomes unusable.

  • Screensaver reverts to Natl Geographic;  mouse loses connectivity. both since yosemite loaded...

    Is this being addressed?

    Do a backup.
    Quit System Preferences.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.screensaver.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

  • Magic mouse sudden connection loss

My magic mouse loses connection suddenly. I have tried even changing batteries but the problem is not resolved. Please help

Look at the threads in More Like This at the right.
One general theory is that different makes of batteries have slightly different length positive terminals and loose connection.  Some find adding a small shim of aluminum foil to keep the batteries from moving works.  Others just a piece of paper to push down and serve the same purpose.
Others sometimes have problems with interferance.

  • Mouse loosing connection

    I recently purchased a 27" iMac, which I love.
However, I am having some serious mouse issues. It constantly looses connection and just stops working till it reconnects which is anywhere from 1min to 5mins.
It's very annoying. What could be the problem? Is it something I can fix or is it maybe a defected mouse?
    Any advice is appreciated
    Thanks,
    Jon

Depending your your point of view it could be considered "defective".  Problem is you are not alone.  There are many posts on the, er, deficiencies, of the MM.  Google "magic mouse looses connection" and look at More Like This section on the right.  Here's a 15-page thread on this topic in these forums:
    Magic Mouse Loses Connection
Some of the problems appear to be a poor transmitter/receiver.  Others seem to be due to problems with the batteries used.  For example, different makes of batteries have slightly different lengths of the positive terminal (end with small "nib").  The tolerances are such that the slight length difference is enough to make the battery loose contact wth small movements of the batteries.  Some have found putting a small aluminum foil ball inside to take up the "slack".  Others have found different brands of batteries are less prone to the problem since they have larger positive terminals.
I do recommend always keeping a (cheap) wired mouse as a backup.  Keyboard too if you use a BT keyboard.
