Mouse movements cause F10, F11 and F12 automatically.

Unusual problem...
When i move my mouse in a particular way . e.g diagonally towards the spotlight ( top right corner) this has the same effect as pressing F11- i.e the windows shoot off towards the top of the screen and i ma left with my desktop. Infact other mouse movements can cause the same result as widgets appearing .
can anyone help? I have a macbook. Although i have Leopard this problem was still in Tiger.
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like "hot corners"..
Try going to System preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Screen saver.
You will see a "Hot corners" button at the bottom where you can adjust what the mouse does as it hits the corner of the screen.
Before spaces I used this shortcut a lot to reveal the desktop:)

  • Why do F11 and F12 no longer invoke audio control?

On my Intel powerbook,  F11 fills screen and F12 brings up dashboard. This just started happening. I don't see how to change this in keyboard preferences. Since I use the PB for recording and music, this is very annoying!
    OS 10.6.8

If using the function key with F11 and F12 work properly (FN F11)  then it's probably the setting in System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard tab > uncheck "Use all F1, F2, etc keys as standard function keys"

  • The mouse moves on its own and the screen freezes and zooms in and out.

About 2 months ago I bought a new macbook pro and over the last couple of days it has produced all these problems!
The screen jolts and freezes and only has gradual movement and zooms in and out on a page and the mouse also freezes and moves on its own.  This usually happens when I am on the internet.
Its happened twice now where it works perfectly fine and then all of a sudden it happens.
Has anyone else had this before? Is it a virus?
Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated!

  • Mouse moves screen image back and forth (baby changed some setting)

My son was banging on the keyboard and must have hit a combination of keys that changed something. Now the desktop image moves around in the display as I move the mouse (makes me a bit dizzy). Any idea what this setting is and how I can restore it to the old setting?
    Thanks in advance.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
As well as the ctrl key and mouse scroll as jlindh suggests, you can toggle OS X's zoom in  menu > System Preferences... > Universal Access > Seeing and turn Zoom off.

Is there any way to either:
    1. make the F10, F11 and F12 keys provide the mute, sound lower and sound higher functions?
that's the default isn't it? if it doesn't work for you uncheck the box "use F1..." in system preferences->keybaord&mouse->keyboard.
    2. have the sound functions assigned to other keys and leave the F10, F11 and F12 keys with their display application windows, display dock and dashboard functions?
no. you can't reassign volume shortcuts. if you check the box mentioned above you'll have to use fn+F10 etc to get to them.
I've tried various settings in System Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse, but without success so far.
    Three sets of questions:
    1. Is System Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse the right place to be looking?
    2. If so, how should I set the preferences to accomplish what I'm trying to do?
    3. If not, what is the correct application, and what should I specifically do?
    Thanks.

  • Keyboard sound keys not working (F10, F11 & F12)

I just purchased a wired keyboard for my iMac and can't seem to get my volume control keys (F10, F11 and F12) working.  I've unticked the "Use all F1, F2 etc" box within system preferences > keyboard, and still doesn't seem to work.  Previously I was running the wireless bluetooth keyboard and had no issues.  I'm sure it's something quite simple, but any suggestions would make my life much easier..

    HI,
    Do an Archive and Install.
    To reinstall Mac OS X:
Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.
Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select the destination disk, select your current Mac OS X disk (in most cases, it will be the only one available).
Click Options. *If you want to save your existing files, users, and network settings, select “Archive and Install,” and then select “Preserve Users and Network Settings.”* If you want to erase everything on your computer and reinstall Mac OS X, select “Erase and Install.” You can’t recover erased data.
    Click Continue.
Click Customize to select which parts of Mac OS X you’d like to install, or click Install to perform a basic installation (recommended).
If you purchased a standalone version of Mac OS X, these installation instructions are in a booklet PDF file located on the Mac OS X Install Disc.
If you need to reinstall the version of Mac OS X that was on your computer when you purchased it, or if you need to restore all the software on your computer, including Apple, bundled third-party applications, and printer drivers, review the instructions in the manual that came with your computer.
If you need to reinstall Mac OS X and you’ve been using Time Machine for backup, you can easily restore your applications, files, and user settings from your Time Machine backup file after you’ve reinstalled Mac OS X.

  • How do i get f10/f11 to work as volume buttons

how do i get f10/f11 to work as volume buttons,

Hold the FN key as you press F11 and F12 for volume up and down.   If you'd like to have that as the default without the FN key then go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard tab > uncheck "use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys"

  • Function keys F11 and higher not working as expected

Since I installed Leopard, my F11 through F15 keys act strange, the rest works OK. I use an external MS Comfort Curve keyboard with v6.2.1 (latest) of the Intellitype keyboard driver. I have switched off all keyboard shortcuts for function keys. I have set the System Preference to use the function keys as regular Function keys. Now the F11 is dead, the F12 is the eject, F13 through F15 are dead too. Switching the preference on or off only affects the F1 through F10 keys. There's no change for the F11 through F15 keys.
When I switch to Parallels 3 with Windows XP, the F11-key acts the same as the PrtScn (which is F13) key, the F12 key does nothing, F14 (ScrLk) and F15 (Pause/Break) are dead.
This IS annoying since I work on AS400 machines where you really need F11 and F12 + F23 (shift-F11) and F24 (shift-F12). Under Tiger, I did not have this problem - all settings worked as expected.

Software updates of all concerned programs ans OS's have resolved the issue.

  • Right Mouse click causes Finder to restart, folder to close

Trying to bring up contextual menu > New Folder with right mouse click causes screen folders and icons to disappear and the finder appears to restart Open folders close. It is quick like a finder restart? It is annoying and alarming.

    Sounds like a Finder restart.
Used Disk Utility to verify, and if necessary repair, your drive and permissions?
If all is reported clear then try removing com.apple.finder.plist in your user library preferences folder to someplace else on your drive. This will reset your preferences but it may be a corrupt preferences file.

  • Choppy mouse movements

So sometimes when I wake my computer up from sleep the mouse movements are really choppy and the only way to get it to go back to a smooth movement is to restart the computer (at least that I have found thus far). I am not really sure why it is doing this, or how to make it stop permanently. Is there something wrong with my computer?
    -Aaron

No, but you are posting on the Leopard 10.5 forum. Your specs state you are running 10.4, this is Tiger. You would get a better reply if you were in the correct forum. I am not being rude, only telling you in case you are not aware.
