Mouse moving to second display when off

I have a late 2012 iMac running Mavericks with a Samsung SyncMaster as a second display.  When the 2nd monitor is turned off (manually from the power button on the monitor) my mouse pointer will still move to that display.  I personally don't use the 2nd display, but my husband and kids do but on their own logins.  I've unchecked the "displays have separate spaces" in mission control, unplugged and plugged the monitor back in, and with every restart it still does it.  Any ideas how to prevent this?  It's get really annoying when I can't find the pointer and have to move the mouse for what seems like forever to get it visible again.

I want to add the second display is connected to the iMac via mini display port to DVI adapter, plugged into thunderbolt port.

  • Windows 10: Second display "turns off" in lock screen

Unfortunately some of these quirks are why people don't upgrade straight away, on the plus side by having over 14M people upgrade in less than 2 days MS now has a lot of faults found and fixes to work on - quickly. We hope.
That said I have a dual screen setup and my monitors retain the screen space settings.
The fact yours is a laptop maybe indicative of your issue - does your laptop have dual graphics,  e.g. one for high use games and one for low use 2D?
Does it turn off 3D settings - it may not be a Windows 10 thing but more of a setting that has defaulted.

I don't recall having this problem with Win 7 Pro, just upgraded to 10 pro a few days ago.I have an HP Probook 450 G2 (with up-to-date graphics driver) and a dual monitor setup. Main display is on HDMI and second display is on VGA. When I lock my laptop (Win+L), it seems to "turn off" the second display and shifts any applications I had in the second display to the main display. While a relatively small issue, it is rather annoying to have to drag applications back over to the second display when I resume working. It doesn't seem to happen right away though, nor does it seem to trigger when display is set to sleep at 20 minutes. I'm not sure how else to explain this. I've found posts of a similar nature on Spiceworks and other forums, but nothing seems to help.Thispostis from a while ago and is related to Win 7, but does seem to describe...

  • Closing MacBook lid w/ mini-DVI to second display turns off second display

I hooked up a MacBook to another display via the mini-DVI to DVI adapter but, when I close the lid of the MacBook, the other display goes off. The display settings are set to mirror and this doesn't happen with my MacBook Pro. With my MacBook Pro, I can close the lid and continue working with the monitor connected directly to the DVI port without issues. Anyone have any suggestions as, to use my MacBook this way, both displays remain lit which is kind of pointless. Thanks in advance,
    Derren.
Black 2 GHz Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.5 GB RAM

It is puts the Macbook to sleep when you close the lid.
All you need to do is press a key on the external keyboard or mouse and it will wake up the Macbook with the lid closed. If you are using bluetooth for your external devices, ensure that the "wake from sleep" option is enabled under Bluetooth setting in System Preferences.

  • Second display turned off

    Hello guys
I plug a 2nd screen (Philips) on my iMac late 2013 (with GTX 780M 4G°) by Minidisplay to HDMI.
It works fine... but, sometimes, when i reboot or start a new session, the display stay off and doesn't appear in the display preferences.
I change the cable, i unplugged and replugged... nothing. Only a reboot (sometimes) or a "Cmd Alt PR" solve the problem.
It worked fine with my late 2009 imac... Any idea ?

    Hello there, Zeustef.
The following Knowledge Base article provides some great recommendations for troubleshooting issues with display:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1573
No video or no signal, image distortion, "snow," or flickering
    Check connections
When using an external display be sure to check the following:
If you're using an Apple notebook, confirm the AC power cable or adapter is securely connected to the computer and the cable providing power to the display is also secure. It is always good to have your notebook connected to AC power when an external display is in use.
Confirm display adapters are fully seated in their respective connections and that they are supported models and for the computer and display. Refer to these articles to assist you with adapter compatibility and further configuration information:
    Monitor and Display Adapter Table

Apple Mini DisplayPort adapters: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolutionStart by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.

  • Second Display Powers Off Periodically

    Hello everyone,
I can't find anyone with quite the same problem as me, so assistance would be appreciated. I run my macbook periodically hooked up to a second monitor. This works fine except that after a while (10 mins or so) the second monitor flicks off, and remains off. It's still got power, the macbook is apparently still feeding it data (my windows don't whiz back onto my main screen), but it's gone blank. If I switch the monitor off and on again, it comes back up. Recently it will then flick off again immediately. The solution appears to be to wait a few minutes, and then switch it off/on.
It sounds like something is overheating perhaps, but I'm baffled to know what. Any thoughts?
Many thanks for any ideas you might have.

Hmm. That's odd. I would suggest something in the Energy Saver control panel but there isn't an option for turning off on a per-display basis.
Have you tried another monitor to see if it has the same problem? If not, it may the actual display that is the problem and nothing wrong with your Macbook.

    Hi -
I have my xorg.conf set up to display on my TV as well, this has worked fine until last upgrade.

  • Second display flickers off then on again randomly

I have a 20" iMac (early 2008), which I've had for about 9 weeks or so.
After a week or two, I got rid of my PC and connected my Dell 22" monitor via DVI to the imac as a second monitor.
However, it randomly 'cuts out' for a second or so, then comes back on as normal. It's only about a second long, if that (about the length of time you usually get when you change resolutions or inputs on a monitor).
The main imac screen never does it, and the external monitor never did it on the PC.
I've seen a few similar posts from other people mentioning it.
Any thoughts? Could it be a dodgy mini DVI converter? Dodgy iMac?

To help Apple narrow it down some, I used to have a GNR 19" Widescreen connected at 1440 * 900 and never had the problem, same Mini DVI adaptor. The problem started when I connected the 20" which works perfectly on a PC. I've tried dropping the resolution/colours but it makes no difference. Another forum on the problem:

  • Spots on new iMac retina 5k display when off

When powered off, you can see lots of spots behind the screen.  I had 5-6 that were pretty large and Apple sent me a replacement (yes, I have Apple Care).   So this evening I noticed the same thing on the one I just received this afternoon.  What the heck is going on?  So far, only see one.  I unboxed the new (replacement) iMac and placed it in the intended location and waited for the temperature to reach room temp (72) before I plugged it in & turned it on.  What the heck is going on??  If there was a MacBook Pro that you could get Thunderbolt, USB3 and 32G of ram, I'd change...  but REALLY need 32G (photo & video processing)...
    Yosemite 10.10.1
    1TB fusion
    32G ram
    4Ghz i7
    M295x graphics
    Adobe cloud, using:

No one here can know "What the heck is going on??" Contact Apple and have them send another iMac.

  • Using a second display

I just purchased a 15" Powerbook and have attached a 23" Cinema Display. I have several questions:
Is it possible to turn off the second display without physically detaching it from the PB?
Is it possible to turn off the PB screen and just use the second display? (I know about getting a second keyboard and keeping the PB closed.)
When I have the two displays in "mirror" mode, I am not getting a full screen on the second display when i use the highest resolution on the second display. Is there a way to correct this and still maintain the highest resolution on the second display?
    Thank you very much.

    Hi cerett --
I have to preface my responses by saying I don't have a second display attached to my PowerBook. That said, I think I can answer the first two of your three questions. Here goes:
    • Is it possible to turn off the second display without physically detaching it from the PB?
I think your 23" ACD has a power button, right? If so, why can't you just power down the ACD if you want to turn it off without physically detaching it from the PB.
Alternatively, and this also goes to my answer to your second question, you could turn down the brightness to the point where the screen is totally dark. Now, this doesn't seem like an ideal solution by any means, because you'd still have power running to the ACD for no reason, but it would seem to accomplish what you want anyway.
    • Is it possible to turn off the PB screen and just use the second display? (I know about getting a second keyboard and keeping the PB closed.)
You write that you already know how to use your PowerBook with the display closed. See: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86286 So, it sounds like you would like to leave your PB open, but just not have the display on. If so, it seems to me you could just decrease the brightness (using the F1 key or, of course, System Preferences > Displays > Display) to the maximum extent possible so that they display goes totally dark. May not be an ideal option (see above analysis), but it would seem that it should work for you.
Sorry, but I can't help with your third question. I'm not sure, but you might increase your chances of getting the information you need, if you reposted that third question in the Apple Cinema Displays forum, here -- http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=981 -- as the answer to this question may have more to do with the characteristics of the ACD than of the PB. I'd wait to see if someone comes along here first, and, if not, then repost there.
    Good luck.

  • Dual display with one display turned off

I'm having a problem that I cannot figure out...
I run my 21" computer monitor as my primary display. I have my 42" TV as a second display when I play WoW. I'm not running in mirrored mode. The problem I'm trying to resolve is if I decide NOT to play WoW on my TV (leaving the TV off), but rather run it on my 21" primary monitor, the WoW application (when started) is being display on the TV as a extended monitor. How can I bring (drag or otherwise) that application over to my 21" primary monitor without turning on the TV to drag it over?
    Thanks for any help...

Just to let you know...When you have two displays hooked up to your computer. The video ram is split between the two monitors, even if you have the second monitor off. When not using the second monitor you might want to disconnect it from the computer so the main monitor uses the full video ram.

    Please Help!
    Thanks!

FCE is a resolution specific application. The formats are fixed at standard DV and standard HD frame sizes. You need FCP for this. Or you change the frame size on export and compress for the web. I assume it's for the web as no video standard uses that shape.

  • Maverick = bye bye to second display viewer :-(

Well sadly  you cannot use the second display as a video viewer anymore, even with the old iMovie (9.0.9) since upgrading to Maverick.
I wished I had knew that prior to upgrading. Is that a subtle way to push me to buy Final Cut Pro?

You should be able to still use a second display with iMovie 9.0.9.
I agree that it is sad that the latest version of iMovie has fewer features than iMovie 9.0.9.
After upgrading to Mavericks and installing iMovie 10, I was happy to see that my previous version was not removed and was in a folder appropriately named "iMovie 9.0.9.
When I retreated to iMovie 9.0.9, it seemed that I could no longer view in a second display. But I was able to get my second display to work by going to preferences and selecting "Show Advanced Tools." Then under the Window menu item, the "Viewer on Other Display," was activated.
I depend upon using a second display when editing in iMovie; therefore, I will continue to use 9.0.9 for some of my projects and fcpx for others.

  • When I connect a second display both displays start to cycle on and off.

I am connecting a second display that works on both my macbook and macbook pro. When I connect it to my imac, both monitors start blinking on and off.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Long story short I solved the problem, and it was totally a model issue. It is the HP w2207, which apparently has a problem with iMac 24 inch, the nvidia graphics card, mini DVi to DVI and 10.4 in particular. You see these two devices, just don't get along very well. The imac tries to auto set the monitor at one resolutions and the monitor tries to auto set itself at another, and they will continue to do this indefinitely. However both when I switched to a VGA cable, which I believe prevents the monitor from auto setting itself, and when I upgraded to 10.5 solved the problem.
Personally I didn't mind the upgrade, as I was planning to do it anyway, and is definitely the better solution as there is noticeable difference in the color between the two cables.
Anyway thanks for the help everyone.

In the worst case, it's still under warranty (all 7th gen nanos are still under one year from purchase).
So, you disconnect it from power, and it almost immediately goes dead?  You can try a Restore... but it doesn't sound like the type of problem a Restore will fix.
You should probably have it looked by Apple Tech Support.  If there's an Apple Store nearby, you can take it to the store's Genius Bar.  To avoid waiting, you can make a reservation at the store's web page
