Mouse or trackpad doesn't work

My wife's 13" Mac Book Pro has developed an issue I've never seen before.
She did a software update two days ago and she says the computer has been freezing and not performing as well as before the update.
Today, she's got a non functioning mouse and track pad. We have an Apple wireless "Magic Mouse." The cursor is visible on the screen, and moves as you move the mouse or use the track pad, but nothing can be clicked on or selected. The keyboard arrows work, but nothing that requires a "click" can be used.
I tried starting up from the Snow Leopard DVD and thought I could install a new System, but there is a "continue button" that must be selected to continue the installation and iI can't figure out how to "click" on it to activate it.
This is an issue I've never ever seen in the 20+ years I've had Macs. It has to be a software issue, right? I will appreciate any suggestion or advice. Are there keyboard controls that can let me navigate menus and select "button" sso I can re-install a fresh system?

I'd definitely have the Apple "genius" determine for you if it is a software or hardware issue.
To have the repair done you may want to consider sending it into their service center. I've read in the forums where people wait for weeks on repairs at the stores. If you decide to send it in the "genius" will give you a number to call. They give you a case number over the phone and then they FED EX a box to you. (takes a few days to get to you) and then you pack it up securely and call FED EX to pick it up - it is over nighted to the service center - repairs they say usually take between 5 to 7 days, but my experience was much faster. Then they over night it back to you via FED EX. Note: someone has to be home to sign for it when it arrives back at your home. (or I guess you could have it picked up and delivered back at work if you wanted to) The box they send is very heavy duty and has special foam inserts so that your notebook is secure and protected during shipping. Also there is a place online at Apple Support where you can go and check the status of your repair. i.e. box sent, box with notebook picked up, service completed, box with repaired notebook delivered back.
In either case - once again - make sure you back up all of your data first.
Good luck and I hope the repair process is as easy for you as it was for me.

Sound like a trackpad problem and not an iPhoto one.  Have you asked in the forum dedicated to the Mac model you're using or is this an add on trackpad?

  • The mouse scroll wheel doesn't work with Xorg

I recently installed Solaris 10 on my x86 box. One issue is that the mouse scroll wheel doesn't work with Xorg. Hmmm... Okay, it sometimes did work, and most of the time went on strike, and recovered at random. This pattern continued.
My mouse is an ordinary PS/2 one with two buttons and a scroll wheel. I want to promise that there's absolutely nothing wrong with it per se. Here is some info:

  • Macbook white, Bootcamp 3.1, Windows 7 - trackpad doesn't work

    Hello.
I am using macbook white (bought in 2008), Mac Os X 10.5.8 (russian). I installed Windows Ultimate 7 (russian) via bootcamp, trackpad was working. Then installed Bootcamp 3.0 drivers, trackpad was working still. I installed Bootcamp 3.1, now trackpad doesn't work at all. I reinstalled Bootcamp 3.1 but It didn't help.
    Please help.

    I found the solution.
    1. Uninstall all bootcamp drivers
    2. Change language of interface in regional settings to English.
    3. Install bootcamp drivers
    4. Switch language back to Russian
Unfortunatly two-finger tap for right-click still doesn't work

  • Keyboard & trackpad doesn't work

hi, i've a problem with my ibook g4, keyboard & trackpad doesn't work. please help me.

    Hi onetechs,
You need to give more information on the problem. Did they suddenly stop working or was it gradual? Does the computer still boot up? Was there physical trauma (eg. drop/spill/etc.)? How old is the computer?

  • MacBook suddenly turns off at 40% of battery charge and trackpad doesn't work

    Hello,
I had to replace the battery of my white MacBook (13 inches, mid 2010), because it was swollen, and the capacity was about just 20-30% of its original one. I bought a new one. Specifically, this one. After replacing it, I have those problems:
When I run on battery, the computer suddenly turns off at about 40% of the charge. No warnings. Just turns off.
The trackpad is not working properly. I can move the mouse, but I can not click. The swollen battery was pusing the trackpad, and I guess it's broken now. I don't know if I can replace it.
Coconut battery tells that the maximum charge of the battery is below the design capacity. Not sure if this is a problem, or Coconut battery is just comparing my battery's numbers with the theoretical numbers of a brand new battery. Check a screenshot
The battery drains too fast. From 100% to 65% in about 20 mins. So, at the end, I have less than 1 hour of battery time.
I've tried resetting the SMC, following these instructions. Specifically, pressing (left side)Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time, releasing all the keys and then pressing power button to turn on the computer. Not worked. I think it was even worse.
Could it be a problem of this specific battery? Or maybe just the MacBook doesn't accept batteries like that one? It's not original.
In the first case, I would return the battery to get my money back. In the second case, I guess I should have bought an original one.
Additional data that may be useful:
    Mac OS X 10.8.5 (12F4S)
    EFI boot ROM version: MB71.0039.B0E
    SMC version: 1.60f6
About EFI boot and SMC versions, those are the last available official updates, obtained from here.
    Many thanks in advance.

I'd say it was a faulty battery.

  • Mouse and trackpad just not working - can't use machine

    Hi there,
I have a late 2009 iMac running an up to date version of Mountain Lion and all has been well until today.
My iMac behaving very oddly with my trackpad. I have tried switching it our for a wired mouse and I get the same results. This is what I am experiencing:
The iMac behaves as though I have either:
clicked and held my finger down - on my desktop when  I move the cursor around the iMac thinks I'm trying to select an area
right clicked - when I try and click on an icon in the dock, the right click options appear
Additionally I am experiencing the following
iMac doesn't respond to me clicking on an icon
I can't select an option, ie if I do select an option such as 'Continue' (more of that later*) I  can't get the iMac to respond to me clicking it
Before switching over to my mouse I replaced the batteries in my BT keyboard and the trackpad. I've also tried attaching a USB keyboard (albeit a PC one)
    I have tried the following:
    resetting the V/P RAM
    booting in Safe Mode
Shutting down, unplugging everything (inc power cord) and left for 10 mins before rebooting
Booting in recovery mode and reinstalling M Lion - I can't even do this
    * When presented with the recovery options I can scroll through the 4 options with the up down arrow keys, I can select 'Continue' with the mouse or trackpad (it goes a solid blue colour) but I move forward - either by clicking it or hitting Enter on the keyboard.
I'm now totally stuck as when I reboot (there's been a fair few forced ones) I can't even select my user profile (or any of the Resart/Shut Down options)
Time to make a Genius Bar apppointment, or is there something else I can do?
    Thanks
EDIT: I did manage to select my wife's user profile and eventually got into the system, and very strangley if I access the iMac via LogMeIn on my work PC it responds excatly as it should. I can click, select as normal. Even when I'm doing this remotely my trackpad and mouse continue to behave incorrectly (as described above

Man.. I is such a fool sometimes.
So I reinstalled ML - which on my cruddy 4 MB ADSL connection took a fair while. And still the problem was there.
Then I tried one small thing... take the batteries out of the trackpad and then try using the wired mouse. BINGO.
After a few more tests it has bceome clear that it was the trackpad that was at fault. Not my iMac, not my OS. Having it on would screw up what the wired mouse was trying to do. Should've checked that HOURS ago.
I have a spare trackpad (I used to have a Mac from work and bought myself a trackpad for it. No longer have a Mac for work as a switched employers, but ironcially willbe getting one next week!). I have installed the 2nd trackpad and all works fine.
Lesson learned - do more thorough diagnostics!
I'm off to cancel my Genius Bar apppointment

  • Mouse clicks, scrolling doesn't work in applications from start screen (let's call it "tile application")

    Hello!
    I need help.
2 days ago the mouse worked fine. Yesterday I noticed that the mouse scroll does not work in the "Book Bazaar Reader". Now I found that the right mouse button and left mouse button does not work in some applications, but scrolling work in these applications.
In mail application clicks work in some panels, scrolling doesn't work.
In desktop mode, the mouse works perfectly.
    Please help!

    Hi
Since at desktop mode everything fine, i suspected some application or 3rd party SW change your mouse setting
Go to run, msconfig, run as administrator, within the System Configuration dialogue box find startup tab, find KHALMNPR (if you using logitec mouse) and uncheck it
    click ok and restart
or try to do clean boot to eliminate 3rd party SW issue

  • Xcelsius/Dashboard Design - mouse over capability doesn't work/losing hover

Hello there,  I am currently in a tough situation.  If any Xcelsius gurus can provide me with a solution, I would very much appreciate your help.
I currently have a dashboard with pie chart component in the default view.  It has a radio button with two values.  The mouse over doesn't work when the dashboard is loaded.  However, when I make a selection in the radio button, the mouse over works for both the options.  I have noticed this is a bug but if anyone has a solution or way around it, let me know.
Another issue - I have a 'All' view and 'Region' views in the menu bar.  When a user clicks on a particular Region, then clicks all and goes back to a region, I lose the drill down capability on the pie chart thats on the Region view.  initially, the mouse over and drill down works fine.  However, after going to the All view and coming back to a region, this capability is lost.  It acts the same way as the problem above.  User can't hover nor drill down.  If anyone has a solution to this, let me know.

FYI this is the article on the main forum page:
Announcement: New to Spry, or  the Spry forums?
    Hide Details
Before you post a topic please verify that:
You are using the latest Spry files
The latest version of the Adobe Spry Framework is 1.6.1, this is the same version that ships with Dreamweaver CS4. If you use Dreamweaver CS3 (uses Spry 1.4), its wise to upgrade your files to the latest version. This can easily be done using the Spry Updater that can be found here.
After that we will have a look at your code.

  • Mouse scroll-down doesn't work....

LIttle trackball for scrolling on my mouse doesn't work when attempting to scroll down. I've looked at the pref settings for it, and it all seems fine. It will move in all other directions, just not down.
    Advice please?

Glad it worked. Folks seem to have varying probs w the scroll wheel. I have been lucky. 1st one lasted 4 months and would not clean. Free replacement. This one is now going on a year w a couple of minor cleans.

  • Trackpad doesn't work for 5 seconds after any USB device is connected

This is really irritating. I could plug in any USB device - a hard drive or iPhone, and the trackpad will not work for about seconds of trying to get the pointer to move around the screen. Normally there's nothing connected to the Mac, so when something is plugged in, even if I just plug something in and walk away from it and come back some time later, if I try to move the trackpad, nothing will happen for about 5 seconds after trying to move the mouse pointer. Very strange.
    Any idea what's going on?

Seems like a strange problem. You could try putting dbus earlier in the list, second after syslog-ng is where I used to have it. Moving to systemd might fix it too.

  • Booting problem, mouse and keyboard doesn't work for 2 minutes

I got a brand new mac mini 2.4Ghz just 3 weeks ago, got a few problems over the last week that I've been able to fix, but now I'm stuck with a problem when booting. The booting process seems a bit slow, and once the desktop has been fully loaded, the keyboard and mouse doesn't work, and the computer is using the non-calibrated Display Profile. After about 2 minutes, the display profile change to calibrated, and the mouse and keyboard work again. I have no clue about how to fix that problem, and I'm thinking about bringing the computer to an Apple Store by tomorrow if I can't fix it.

  • Help! Trackpad doesn't work and keyboard sometimes does too

I have Blackberry 9320 and it already has the latest software updates before these problems occured. My trackpad suddenly doesn't work, but it can click. And the weird thing is I can still move it up and down if I open the submenu. I repeat, only if I open the submenu.
My keyboard also has some problems, when I type, it often misses some letters. For example if I type down "blackberry" it'll come out as "backbrry". So I have to erase and type it over again. Sometimes my keyboard just doesn't work at all, I can't type anything, even the non letter buttons such as the menu button doesn't work as well.
I've tried hard restart and others, but it still didn't work. And actually I've faced the same problems a few months ago, but sadly I can't remember how I solved it at all.
Thank you. I'm sorry if my English is pretty confusing because it's not my first languange.
Update: I can move it up and down now if press the Alt button, but it's still different as it used to be

Thanks for your reply. I've tried hard restart and I also had the OS re-installed, but it didn't work. I brought it to a service centre yesterday (not an official Blackberry Centre though), and the mechanic tried changing my trackpad with a new one, and cleaned my keyboard part (the one under the keytone). Those didn't give any effect too. He gave up and said maybe there's something wrong with my phone's IC and I must try bringing it to the Blackberry Centre. The problem is, the Blackberry Centre is really far from my campus and I don't have the time yet to go there, so I just want to try any possible ways to do by myself for now. Thanks.

  • Macbook Pro trackpad doesn't work on word

My macbook pro mouse trackpad isn't working while I'm on microsoft word. It works on other application like safari but refuses to work on word. It still clicks and i can use the sidebar to move up and down pages but i am unable to slide down the page using two fingers.

    Hello jwilliams112,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your trackpad is not functioning as you would expect only while using Microsoft Word on your MacBook Pro. In this situation, I would suggest reading over and working through the If the issue occurs in one application only section in the attached article for troubleshooting information.

  • My bluetooth magic mouse and trackpad suddenly quit working.  This has been going on for a month or more.  Eventually continual

I have a Bluetooth Mac keyboard, trackpad and magic mouse.  They fail regularly and only a series of resets eventually cures the problem. I have switched to a USB mouse, but that eventually fails too.  2011 mini, all current software.  Mouse still moves cursor, but no left click.  Trackpad loses click ability.  Repeated shutdowns.  Something is very wrong.

If even the USB mouse is failing, that's interesting. Make sure you remove the batts from any nearby BT mice, and reboot the system.  USB mouse should work fine, if it's still not clicking, something needs to be probably changed in the system preferences.
