Mouse pointer/cursor clicking fails while screen sharing in Messages & iChat

Has anyone else had this problem?
My work partner is sharing her screen using iChat on OS 10.6.8 and I'm controlling it with Messages on OS 10.8.3 - usually working on Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.
Every few minutes or so, I lose the ability to click anything on her screen. Audio/video works fine, and my keyboard commands run fine on her computer, I can usually even move the pointer fine but, clicking my mouse or trackpad has no affect on her computer. This is sometimes accompanied by a flashing stalled pointer.
We can usually fix it by having her click her mouse/trackpad a couple times and then I can continue with clicking again from mine.
But, sometimes she's not at the computer so there's no way for me to recover screen share clicking when her computer is unattended.
We both have high speed internet with 10+mb down and 5+mb up speeds.
I've also tried it with bluetooth off and still have the same problem.
Does anyone know how to recover from failed mouse clicking during screen sharing?
Thanks.

HI,
I have not see this but at the same time I do not Screen Share as extensively as you seem to describe.
One interpretation I could out on this from what you have written is that not only is your girlfriend getting bored and wondering Off  ( ) but her computer may also be going to sleep.
I have never waited long enough for one of my other computers to go to Sleep during a Screen Share to find out what happens.
1) does the Share Screen go dark ?
2) do you lose the connection as it closes the network ?
3) Is a Screen Saver starting that you can see ?
4) what does your girlfriend see when this happens ?
I would guess there is something about the VNC part of the iChat Screen Sharing that stops the Shared computer going to sleep.
However I am not sure if a Screen Saver can be active or if you are bumping into the time set for one to start.
I would also be interested in what the other computer is doing in a "behind the scenes" way.
Is something using up the Processor cycles and holding up the Share view as it were ?
I would guess her computer is doing something on it's own such as fetching Mail or similar or even the Time Machine Back up which can be known to cause the computer to be held up for a moment or two.

  • Screen sharing in Messages   iChat

Before upgrading to Messages, I was able to share screens with another computer (my MacBook Pro connecting to a larger-screen mac, I don't know which kind). There was a problem years ago, that had been resolved in iChat: I'd only see a white screen although we were supposedly sharing screens. That problem was fixed, but the problem has now reappeared now that I've updated to Messages. Other user did change their screen resolution (to mach my MacBook Pro) and we tried reconnecting, but that did not resolve the issue. Other user is using iChat. Someone will probably suggest upgrading other user to Messages - will work on that but might not be possible. Other ideas?

    Just more details:
    My computer - MacBook Pro 13 inch (1280 x 800)
    Other computer is an iMac running 10.7.5 with a 21.4" (1920 x 1080) screen.
By the way, under System preferences for the other computer, there is no option for a resolution that matches my MacBook Pro.
I know one thing to try is to get the other computer to upgrade. I'd hate for that to be the only answer. Videochat works fine, just sharing the other computer screen.

  • I accidentally set a remote mac to "remote management" while screen sharing. Can I remotely reset it to screen sharing?

I accidentally set a remote mac to "remote management" while screen sharing. I did not realize that this set it to require the commercial Apple Remote Desktop application to get to it. Can I remotely reset it to screen sharing? It has disconnected me from accessing it using iCloud.

Good question, and I am not sure. I believe the remote login WAS checked, so if that is needed, I think that is a available, unless checking Remote Management unchecked Login.
I am not computer illiterate, but I am not a professional IT guy. I read about more subjects than I know. Back to My Mac should still be set up in iCloud and I have seen some discussion of using ssh with that, and I am gathering that you are talking about ssh when you talk of remote shell access?
    Thanks.

  • Bluetooth Mouse Pointer and Clicker Freezing

    Hello,
I bought a Genius Navigator Mouse model 905BT and connected to my MacAir 11.6". I noticed that my mouse pointer and clicker froze every 15 seconds. I tried this same mouse connecting to my old Macbook 13 inch (version 10.6.2) and on my Windows Laptop with no problems encountered. There were no notifications that the mouse is disconnected and reconnected. It just freezes when I am currently using it. The batteries are new.

    Hi,
It has been fixed when I upgraded the Mac OS to 10.6.5 which just released today.

  • Is screen sharing through Messages limited to third-party accounts in Yosemite like it is in Mavericks?

So I was told this by an Apple support member through the online chat, but everything else I've been reading seems contradictory. Every blog post I've read, and even Apple's own website makes it seems like you can screen share on Messages with any contact with an iMessage account (in Mavericks, it was limited to third-party accounts signed into Messages like Google, Jabber, AIM, etc...).
I was able to screen share through the iMessages account if the two computers were on the same network (both on wifi, or both tethered to the same phone), but not if they were on separate networks. Which seems almost next to useless. It'd be nice to just get a breakdown of what's possible with screen sharing through Messages.
    So far it seems like:
    1. Screen sharing is possible using a third-party account (as per in Mavericks).
    2. Screen sharing is possible using an iMessages account only within the same network (added in Yosemite). <- if this is really all that was "added", they really should make that clear, rather than making it seem like iMessage accounts have the same utility as third-party ones.
Just want someone to confirm this. Thanks!

    Hi,
Screen Sharing only works with an AIM Account (AOL) or a Jabber ID  when the person at the other end is also using the same sort of Account and a Mac with iChat or Messages.
The Bonjour Account which is used for LAN based Mac to Mac Chats can also Screen Share.
The Yahoo account (if you have one) is Text only. It does not even do File Sharing.  It does not do Video Chat, Audio Only ones or Screen Sharing.
The iMessages account does not do Video chats (or Audio Only)
What it does do is invoke the FaceTime App.
    FaceTime does not Screen Share.
Links to the info you have read would be useful.

    Share your screen
You and a friend with Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard or later can share a screen, making it easy to collaborate on a project.
When you share a screen, you and your friend can do anything on the shared desktop, such as opening folders, creating documents, and copying files by dragging them from one desktop to another. Messages automatically starts an audio chat.
You can share screens using AIM, Jabber, Google Talk, and Bonjour. You can’t share screens using Yahoo! or iMessage.
Important: When you share your screen, your friend has the same access to your computer that you have. Share your screen only with people you trust, and be careful if you receive a request to share your screen from someone who isn’t in your buddy list. If the request comes from someone using Bonjour, remember that the name shown for the person in Bonjour does not necessarily match the person’s real name.
See the Line above the one where the word "important" is in bold text.
OS X 10.5 is the one with iChat 4.x.x with it.
    To be clear:-
iChat 1 was an AIM client but also had the Bonjour account under it's previous name of Rendezvous
    iChat 3 added Jabber capabilities
iChat 6 added Yahoo ones. (extremely limited)
Messages brings the Name change and the focus on the iMessages account with the associated window changes.
This means Messages can join 5 "services"
Opening Messages asks you for an Apple ID to register with iMessages.
It also has the Bonjour account present but not turned On.
You can add anything you used in iChat
Some Apple Issued ID are valid AIM Screen Names
GoogleTalk and Facebook Chat IDs works as Jabber IDs
    Apple IDs
These can be considered in some ways to be separated into different functions or layers.
The first difference is between external emails and Apple Issued ones that end in @mac.com, @me.com and @icloud.com  (Some people are using a small number of pre Email linked Apple IDs - about 15 years or older accounts.)
The Apple Issued ones can be used as AIM Screen Names.
You can also distinguish between iCloud Linked ones and plain Apple IDs
As Apple changed from MobileMe to iCloud they used  and linked @me.com IDs to iCloud as people registered for iCloud.
Later they issued iCloud ending emails  (you may have both)
This leaves you with "All iCloud IDs are Apple IDs, but not all Apple IDs are iCloud ID ones".
The short answer is if an Account in Messages can Video within the app (not invoke another app) then it can Screen Share.

  • Screen Sharing through Messages

I'm having a bit of an issue with screen sharing.  I'm running the latest version of Yosemite as is the other machine. (Mac Mini 2011)(MBP 2009) On both machines:  Firewall was turned off and it didn't work, then I turned it on and allowed screen sharing(no change).  I went into preferences and allowed all sharing(no change).
When I try to initiate screen sharing I get the option in Messages.  The other person never gets the alert.  When they try to initiate it with me using Messages, it's greyed out and they can't send any requests.
Any ideas if this is a known bug or something else I'm missing?

  • Authentication failed on screen sharing

Since moving from MobileMe to iCloud, screen sharing via Back to my Mac has completely failed.
I see my computer in SHARED - this is either from home to my work machine, or from work to my home machine. I then select my remote computer and click "Share Screen..." Then choosing the "Connect As a registered user," I  enter my Name (the account name on the remote machine) and Password, and am told "Authentication failed to 'XXXX's iMac'. Please verify you have entered the correct name and password."
If I "Connect Using an Apple ID," (which is is set up appropriately on both machines), I get the same response  "Authentication failed to 'XXXX's iMac'. Please verify you have entered the correct name and password."
    Thoughts?
Curiously, if I choose to "Connect As" (just accessing the remore machine's drives) instead of "Share Screen...", I am able to connect with the same credentials.

What helped for me was the following:
Until iCloud, my Apple ID used to be my Hotmail address. Since I am on the iCloud I have created an @me under this Apple ID. I had the same problem as you described above. I signed into everything using my Apple ID (@hotmail.com) but i couldn't share screens using this Apple ID.
    So I changed everything:
In Users & Groups I signed in with my @me apple ID. Technically they both belong to the same Apple Account. I deactivated and changed the login for the iCloud in System Preferences from my Hotmail to the @me.com email address. same for the time capsule. I did that on all the computers i wanted to share screens and bang. It works perfect.
Maybe it also helps, if the user you define as yourself in your address book has the @me.com as an email address in your address book.
Its a shame that apple doesnt let you change the primary email address yet.

  • IChat screen sharing fails (only screen sharing though)

I was trying to assist my in-laws the other day and have never used Screen Sharing in iChat before. We started an A/V session (which works fine), but when we started the Screen Sharing session, it dies after about 5 seconds of use. Both sides get the error "no activity after 10 seconds...". Thinking it was an internet thing (perhaps firewall settings), i tried internally on my LAN with a MacBook Pro and a new Mac Mini, same thing. Either way the session is initiated, failure.
Did some research through these discussions and found the common thread was the UPnP and internal preference settings. Have checked both, they all seem ok.
Some statistics of my example: (Remote machine) Mac#1 is an iMac G5 20" 2GHz running Snow Leopard fully updated, with Comcast as the IP and an Airport Express as the router. Port Mapping is turned on in NAT, and Screen Sharing is turned on in preferences -> Sharing.
(Local machine) Mac#2 is a Mac Mini 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo running Snow Leopard, with Comcast as the IP and a Time Machine as the router. Both settings above turned on.
(Local machine) Mac#3 is a MacBook Pro 15" 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo running Snow Leopard (same IP as #2) on the same LAN as #2.
All 3 accounts are on MobileMe, A/V chats work fine without problems for limitless amounts of time. Have tried screen sharing both ways, same result.

    Hi,
The "Share a Public IP" can be a bit misleading if your Modem routes (does DHCP itself)
If you turn this Off (Bridge Mode) the IP address come from the previous device that issues IPs
From a Cable Modem this is likely to be from the ISP and not likely that you have two Public IPs
Also the range you describe seems to be from a LAN Device (one that issues IPs in one of three ranges of which 10.xxx.xxx.xxx is one)
However although I have not seen it done I presume the Apple Airport devices can be set to Manually (Static routing). They can be set to use the 10.xxx.xxx.xxx range as well (with the early ones it was the default range).
With the Share A Public IP Off I don't think you get a NAT tab on that same screen.
However in the NAT tab is the Port Mapping Protocol which is Apple's version of UPnP (very basic comparison).
This should be on for two devices to use the same ports.
    See pic
If the modem is the device that is issuing IPs then this should have UPnP Enabled.
You need this rather than Port Forwarding (Or Triggering) as the Screen Share uses a Random port which cannot be forwarded or Triggered).
A Video that drops out with the 10 secs error points to features in routing devices that "protect" you from getting overloaded with a data stream.
Look for DOS or SPI (Denial of Service or Stateful Packet Inspection) which may be separate items and standalone or be included in any firewall the device may have.
At this point I am confused.
You say Comcast which I believe is cable Only meaning their Modem does not do DHCP and passes the Public IP to the Time Capsule.
Yet you say the Time Capsule is not doing DHCP (Share a Public IP).
What do you have at the top of the Screen ?
This pics shows Ethernet to a Cable Router which gives a Public IP starting 70.xxx.xxx.xxx
And you also confirm that the Share a Public IP box in the Pic is set to Static Routing and from there you are using the 10.xxx.xxx.xxx range ?

  • Mouse pointer jumps to corners of screen

I am using a Mighty Mouse (wired) and have had problems with my mouse pointer jumping to the four corners of the screen. I then have to move the mouse around and find what corner it is in, and bring it back to where it was. It happens very often, and is very distracting.
I have had the same problem with a Microsoft wireless mouse and a previous Mighty Mouse.
Any ideas as to how the stop the jumping would be greatly appreciated.

The suggestion to follow the cord was evidently the correct one. I had my Mighty Mouse plugged into the usb port on the back of my Mac keyboard. When I realized this (I have had it set up this way since I got my G5) I plugged it into one of the usb ports on the back of the monitor. In several hours I haven't seen the pointer jump once.
I will leave it set up this way and watch, but I think this may have been the solution. To think it was such an easy solution and I have been putting up with this for several years!
    Thanks Thomas Bryant.

  • Focus on mouse pointer on click- WPF

    hi,
I want to focus the position of the mouse pointer when the user clicks.
Exactly like the focus we get on clicking the ctrl key to locate mouse pointer after enabling it here.
Can anyone help me with this.
    Thanks,

    Hi TheShaleen,
    >>I want to focus the position of the mouse pointer when the user clicks
It's hard to accomplish your requirement, I've tried to find API to enable this setting, but as far as I know, there is no official API to enable this programmatically.
If you just want to make this work on some control, like Canvas, you could get the coordinate of Mouse Pointer and draw shap on this Canvas, please refer to this article:

  • How to find mouse coordinates when mouse pointer is outside of app screen?

    Hello folks,
Does anyone know, how in a Swing/AWT app to find out the screen coordinates
of the mouse pointer when the mouse pointer is outside of the app screen?
    Would appreciate your comments.
    Tim

MouseInfo does work - thanks a lot for your hint!
I wasn't aware of this class actually because normally use 1.4.2.
    Good time to switch :-)

  • Black screen while screen sharing

I bought a Mac Mini about a month ago to replace an aging PowerBook as a file server and iTunes library. Up until today it has been absolutely fine, but as of today - with no change of software on the Mac Mini - Screen Sharing has stopped working.
The symtoms of the problem are that I can see and connect to the Mac Mini, but the shared screen window is totally black (apart from the cursor). Connecting from another Mac gives the same result, so I'm pretty sure the problem originates from the Mac Mini end, not the client. File sharing still works fine, and iTunes (which is an auto-launch item) also still works as I can use the Remote App on my phone to get it to play music and the AppleTVs in the house have no problem playing video.
I rebooted the Mac Mini (had to pull the plug, which I hated doing, since I couldn't see the screen) - but exactly the same problem when it restarted.
The Mini is running the latest version of 10.8 with only File Sharing and Screen Sharing turned on in the sharing prefs.
I've gone through this site and Google searches, but can't see anything that would apply to this situation.

  • Certain apps crash when opened while screen sharing

Hello all, I'm looking to see if anybody else is experiencing what I'm experiencing.  I have a Mac Mini (MacMini2,1 - Core 2 Duo - Mid 2007) that I use as my families iTunes server.  This box runs as a headless device and serves up our iTunes library to all of the computers in the house.  After installing Lion on here, I have found that if I Screen Share to this box from one of the other Macs in the house and try and open certain apps (like App Store) or sometime even if I try and simply open a finder window they will crash.  The crash doesn't bring down the whole box, the apps simple crashes and I get the "report to apple / reopen" window.
I think the issue might be related to the GMA 950 and some driver issue with Lion but I can't be sure.  I do know that if I put a head (monitor) on this unit and try running apps natively (not remote over screen sharing) they work just fine.  One last piece I have noticed is when I am remoted in to the box and TimeMachine is backing up the screensharingd and screensharingagent are chewing up most (75%) of the available CPU.  This whole issue is very strange and I'm trying to decide if I should just blow this box away and start over?
Anyway, let me know if you have any ideas and or if you have seen something similar.

I am having a similar if not the same problem with my late 2009 Mac Mini running Mac OS X v10.7 Lion.  When I try to use remote desktop to it after it has gone to sleep, screensharingd will complain with:
screensharingd[45619]: 3891612: (connectAndCheck) Untrusted apps are not allowed to connect to or launch Window Server before login.
screensharingd[45619]: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.
Apparently when the mac mini comes out of sleep there is something that causes the digital signature of the screen sharing app to be invalidated.  Perhaps a time of day issue or something similar is temporarily causing the app to show up as having an invalid digital signature and causing screensharingd to freak out and hang.
