Mouse pointer freezes sometimes

Whenever I unplug my iPod (shuffle) from the keyboard (of course after having the volume unmounted), some seconds later the mouse pointer freezes and the computer is totally unresponsive for some seconds. Then everything is normal again, i.e. the mouse pointer can be moved again.
The "system.log" tells something about communication problems with the USB and bus reset or similar.
Is this meant with "hot pluggable"? Should not the iPod be independent from the keyboard or mouse?

As far as I remember:
- It does not happen when directly connected to the computer
- It has never happened with the G3, only with the G5
And, yes, the iPod's firmware is the latest one.
And: Connecting the iPod to the keyboard is just more convenient, even if it's slower. As the MacOS does multitasking, I do not mind if a data transfer runs with two megabytes per second or with one, because I can do something else in the meantime.

I think dissapearring mouse cursor has been a bug since 10.4. happens to me every day regardless of whether i am using a computer with more than one screen or not, and regardless of the mouse being used. I agree that the problem has gotten much worse with 10.8, with both wired and non-wired devices.
after much research and thousands of dollars invested in different mouse softwares, input devices, and monitors, I have determined that old simple wired input products are better. wi-fi is getting worse. the less amount of monitors are better. apple brand input products are the worst, but more importantly, are not entirely at fault.
I would suggest anyone suffering from disapearing cursors, that are not wifi, bluetooth, battery, monitor, software, web browser or website related, contact apple and complain. lots.
personally, I think this is a marketing bug, eventually apple will be entirely touch based, the only true method of eliminating mouse disapearance is to eliminate mouse and cursor altogether. to assist that future of marketing, bugs like this will proceed to worsen.

  • Random mouse pointer freezes

On my PPC dual 2.7 running latest Leopard 10.5.2, I have started experiencing random mouse pointer freezes. The freezes last about 10 seconds or so, then all goes back to normal. This happens maybe 10 times a day.
I cannot correlate this to any recent updates or installations. I have repaired permissions and zapped PRAM. My PPC is on 24/7 so all automatic maintenance routines run when they should.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Are you using Time Machine or .Mac Synchronizing? Those automatically run about once an hour and can temporarily slow the computer function.
Open Activity Monitor from the Finder menu, Go/Utilities, Activity Monitor. When the cursor movement slows, look at what application is using the most CPU.
You might also want to restart the computer once every day (or night). You can use the System Preferences Energy Saver to set it up to automatically restart when you are not likely to be using the computer, like 3 AM. The restart does a bunch of system checks and resets things to improve function.

  • Mouse pointer freeze

hi i recently buyed a macbook, but from time to time the mouse pointer freezes for a few seconds.I disabled already the two fingers option from the touchpad,(found that suggestion in a forum ) but without success. Is that problem known, or has somebody an idea what that could be ? Thanks for help!

This has been happening to my MacBook Pro for the past few months now. At first I thought it was a bad mouse, but I've tried 3 known good mice and they all exhibit the same problem.
    Another behavior I'm seeing:
When the freeze occurs, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th mouse buttons all lose the the functionality I've assigned to them (Exposé functions) and revert so some odd behavior: In Safari, button 4 simulates clicking the 'Back' button. On most other apps, nothing happens. Button 5 is the same except with the 'Forward' button in Safari. If I wait a couple of seconds, the mouse and buttons start working as normal.
Is this happening to you as well?

  • Mouse Pointer freezing all the time

    Mouse pointer freezing constantly
    Hi!
My mouse pointer is regularly freezing after about 20 seconds or so. It is released by clicking. I have installed Parallels, and the Windows window says (on the lower left frame) "Click inside OS Window to capture mouse". This has not earlier been necessary even for the Windows window, but has now spread to the Mac side.
I find this utterly annoying and potentially harmful. If I have left the pointer in any place I am not aware of and want to retrieve it, I normally move it to find it. Now I have to click before I can move it, meaning I have to click the mouse in a position I do not know. I can see myself making purchases which ruin me, and the like...
I have recently installed Norton Antivirus on the Mac side and Norman Antivirus on the Windows side. Could that have anything to do with it?
Thank you for any information that can lead to capturing the culprit, dead or alive!
    Hening.

    Hi BDAqua
thank you for your fast reply. I followed yor advice, then booted from my backup disk, repaired the primary disk (no repairs needed) and repaired permissions again, and turned off Norton Auto-protection - altogether to no avail.
    Disk Space on primary drive:
    Capacity of drive 74.53 GB
Mac partition: Capacity: 59.97 GB; Available: 15.68 GB
Windows Partition (Bootcamp, accessed via Parallels):
Capacity: 14.24 GB, Available: 6.84 GB
This seems to mean that I have only 1.44 GB free space on my Mac volume.
Could this be the reason? Tomorrow, I'll move some large files to a backup medium.
    Any more ideas?
    Kind regards - Hening.

  • Mouse pointer freezing

    Hi!
My mouse pointer freezes for no apparent reason, and the only thing that helps is force quitting and relaunching the Finder. This has occurred some times; some times I was able to solve the problem by pressing the space bar. But now it occurred in the middle of drawing a looong lasso in PhotoLine, I lost all that work, and I'm going nuts.
It's a Logitech cordless mouse that has worked flawlessly for eternities.
I have just repaired the HD. I have 6GB of RAM on the Nehalem. The RAM has tested OK in Memtest, in multi-user mode though.
Now it happened while I tried to correct "occured" to "occurred". It helped to put the mouse in the charging cradle. Could that be all there is to it? But the mouse was not lacking power, at least the diode was not red, it was not visible at all, and turning green at once when the mouse was put in the cradle. If the battery is empty, the diode turnes red at least in the beginning after the mouse is seated in the cradle.
Hoping for your help - Hening.

Thank you both for your advice. I will run Activity Monitor and watch it. The first thing that strikes me is that even if I do nothing, the memory (and, to a lesser degree, the CPU) allocation for different apps is changing all the time. While I am writing this, the CPU consumption is topped by TextEdit 1.7..0,6%, Activity Monitor 1,4..0,6%, Firefox 0,5%
appleaka, I don't know what kernel_task is, either; but this may not be so necessary.
I have now replaced the batteries and hope that helps. Of course even rechargeable batteries loose the capacity of being charged over time, so this might be the reason.
I'll watch for a while and then report. Thanks again. - Hening

  • Infuriating persistent intermittent temporary mouse pointer freeze...

    Hi all,
    Adjective overload??
I have browsed these boards for years but have never had the urge to post until now.
Recently I have noticed every 15 seconds or so my mouse pointer freezes. I am unable to move it. At all. For maybe 0.25 of a second. Then all back to normal. It's driving me insane.
Everything else seems to carry on just fine...
    - iTunes plays without a break in sound
    - No noticeable interruption to frame rate if a game is playing
I have reset PRAM, repaired permissions, plugged mouse direct into Mac Pro instead of the keyboard, tried a different mouse. Same issue.
I keep my Mac Pro well maintained.
I am terrified I have some major hardware malfunction!
Any thoughts or suggestions? Has anyone here experienced anything similar?
    Any pointers or suggestions welcomed.
    Thanks

Did this start happening after installing a certain program, does it happen only while using certain programs or does it happen at all times? Have you tried deleting the preferences and logging out/restarting? What mouse are you using, and did you install the manufacturer's program (like for button programming)? I had issues with Logitech's LCC program (not a freezing problem, but very irritating none the less) that was solved after I removed LCC and put Steermouse in its place.

  • T43p - Mouse pointer freezes after changing the battery to a new one

    Hello,
I have bought a new battery for my IBM Thinkpad T43p. In the description of the new battery I have seen that this battery is compatible with T43 series. Battery details are: DC 10.8V 5200mAh/56Wh. Replace: 08K8214.
    My problem is:
I have ordered a new battery for my Thinkpad T43p but when I turned off  the notebook and replace the old battery with the new one the notebook became strange. I use Windows XP Prof on this computer and when the login screen appeared and during I was typing my user name and password the mouse pointer was freezed and I had to turn off the computer. It was happened within approx 1 minute after the Login screen appeared. The symptom was the same with or without plugged in AC charger. I have tried several times and the same behavior was happened. When I changed back the old battery the computer became normal again without any freezing. The fan was working properly in both cases. The symptom is the same if I change the battery during AC charging and using Windows.
I don't have an idea about the reason of it. Can you help me with ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Slider

Pull the battery out and run the machine on AC only. Does it freeze now?
If it doesn't, the "new" battery needs to be replaced.
    Good luck.

  • Mouse Pointer Freezes

I'm having a strange problem where after doing a clean install of Mac OS X 10.6, my computer will freeze for a split second every 6 seconds. The mouse will freeze, any typing will freeze, everything. But only for a small blip of a time period. Then it goes back to normal until six seconds later. I checked Activity Monitor and didn't see anything unusual. Restarts don't help. Any ideas on what could possibly be going wrong here?

As a suggestion, try many different tests to determine if system, a driver, the mouse or ????
If SMC reset did NOT improve the situation, visit the Apple - Support - Downloads area and look for an updated mouse driver. Perhaps all it needs is an updated mouse driver? If updated mouse driver did NOT fix the random 6 second freezing, try a different mouse. Try a "wired" USB mouse instead. Even try a USB mouse from a typical Windows machine. If the USB mouse works great, then it has something to do with your current wireless mouse (assume you are currently using a wireless mouse).
    Good luck...

  • Mighty Mouse (wired) freezes sometimes. unplugging and replugging fixes it.

Not a big problem but kind of aggravating at times. The cursor freezes on the screen and the keyboard will not work. When I unplug the keyboard for about 5 seconds and plug it back in it is fine.
I AM using an extension cable to extend the keyboard because the stock one is too short. I don't know if this would be the cause or not.
Has anyone had any similar problems?

I supposed I could do that but it's an intermittent problem so I don't know how long it would take. I was hoping someone had already run into this specific problem and figured out what the cause was.

    Hi!
I have a recently purchased G780 running windows 8! I seem to have a continuing problem in that the mouse pointer freezes and I am unable to use the laptop until it comes back to life. I have run task manager while this has happened as I suspected that it could be down to to to many power hungry program's and tasks running at once! But both the RAM and CPU don't appear to being over stretched! I have updated the driver but the problem still persists! Dose anyone have any suggestions? Faulty Touchpad maybe? Any help great fully received!

  • Games/Programs/Mouse pointer Stuttering and Freezing

    Hi people
I've recently (5 days ago) built a new PC. I have had loads of problems with it.
First of all after building it, i installed windows XP Professional SP2. Although the PC worked, it was stuttering.
Whenever i performed a task (opening a program, extracting a zip/rar, loading a web page...LITERALLY ANYTHING..) the mouse pointer would pause/stutter/lag for a brief second then return to normal. It would do this several times depending on the length of the process that the computer was dealing with. If i was downloading a file, the mouse pointer would do this until the file was completely downloaded. Sometimes it would simply freeze on the screen and you could see a "Ghost" of the mouse as it rolled over things/selected things.
I even tried doom 3 and the game did the same. A pause every second or so. This also affected the sound causing it to loop sentences (which is why i think it's a mainboard prob.)
I followed the MSI manual and spoke to friends to try to sort this out. I installed all the relevant drivers for the Graphics Card and then went to install the NForce drivers. When i did this and then restarted, Windows wouldn't load anymore. Frustrated, i reinstalled Windows.
Reinstalled, i tried reinstalling them again. Same result. Another reinstall later and i decided to consult the MSI website. It advised updating the Bios. I consulted a computer savvy friend and he suggested the same thing. I did this and then damn thing wouldn't boot anymore. It got stuck on the boot up screen. Very pissed off, i tried reinstalling windows... AGAIN.
Still no luck. It simply wouldn't boot from the hard drive. After 2 days of worrying, i managed to reset the bios back to v1.0 and another reinstall of windows and i was back to the start.
I have left it for now but am incredibly worried about installing the new Nforce drivers or updating the bios again. It was a bloody nightmare.
Now you know my story... here is the question.
"Does anyone have ANY IDEA WHY THE HELL MY COMPUTER SEEMS TO BE FREEZING/STUTTERING?"
My housemates reckon that it could be an IRQ conflict. If that isn't the case, what else could it be? Any ideas would help. I'm not very confident with computer hardware problems and don't know much of the jargon that goes with it.
I've searched the forums and i can't find anything that is too similar although the "USB IRQ Conflict" problems seem possibly relevant.
    Cheers

I've done a graphic card test and that is ok apparently, I've done 3 FULL formats of the Hard disk and all the drivers that i have installed are all the newest out there and are all the correct ones. As you can also see, i have a 450w power supply which should be adequate enough to handle the system.
Hmm... This is a bugger of a problem. Thanks for the advice though.

  • Mac OS X Lion freezes, mouse pointer still moves, HDD still busy

Hello, I need some help with a problem on a MacBook Pro (15-inch Core 2 Duo). Mac OS X will lockup. The clock will not advance, any GUI animations will freeze. But the mouse pointer can still move, and will switch between a beach ball and the normal pointer sometimes. I can still attach to this Mac using file-sharing. Also the screen dims after while. However other things like keyboard brightness won't adjust.  This last time I noticed Spotlight was in the middle of a scan, I can still hear the HDD working. The caps lock indicator works, but keyboard commands like ctl+shift+eject (pur display to sleep) don't work.
    Remediation:
The HDD was formatted and Mac OS X 10.7.3 has been reinstalled
TechTool 5 surface scan of the HDD: passed
