Mouse pointer invisible - intel 945GM

Hey people, thought I would document this in case others have problems.  I have partially solved the issue, but if someone knows a better solution please contribute.  I think this is specific to the intel xorg driver but not totally sure.
I rebooted my eeepc (Intel 945GM, using stock driver) today and when I got into X there was no mouse pointer.  I quickly found that the mouse is in fact there, you can right-click and get a menu etc, its just there is no pointer so your flying blind.
A bit of Googling suggested it was something to do with using xrandr to enable/disable outputs, which is what I do.  At home the eeepc sits on the desk connected to my external monitor.  In my .xinitrc I have it set up so it detects when its connected to the monitor and automatically enables it (VGA) and disables the laptop screen (LVDS).
So to try and get the mouse back I re-enabled the LVDS
xrandr --output LVDS --auto
The eeepc screen comes back on (in clone mode) and sure enough the mouse pointer is visible on that screen, but not on the external VGA.  After a bit of tooling around I found that if you enable both screens in extended desktop mode, the pointer is then visible on both.
xrandr --output LVDS --right-of VGA --auto
Once the pointer is working on both screens you can then turn off the LVDS again, and the pointer remains working on the external, everything back to normal.
xrandr --output LVDS --off
PART 2 - This is actually a question if anyone can help me
In order to use dual monitors like an extended desktop, you will find that you need to set the virtual desktop size in your xorg.conf display section.  Something like:
virtual 2304 1024
BUT...since we now bask in the glory that is hot-plugging and hal wizardry, I don't have an xorg.conf.  Does anyone know how to set the virtual framebuffer size using xrandr, without having to use an xorg.conf?
And while I think about it, why do we even need to set a virtual size manually really, xorg knows the dimensions of connected displays, you would think it could set a default virtual framebuffer to the width of the connected outputs, would make it much easier. /rant
Anyway, any more info on the subject much appreciated.

The cursor issue sounds like an upstream bug - you should report it to https://bugs.freedesktop.org.

Can't be done.  The virtual fb size tells your graphics driver how big a framebuffer to allocate at X start time.  It can't be changed later.  Which is too bad, and a major limitation of randr.  I think it does set the virtual fb size correctly when it starts, but that size will be wrong when you add another monitor for example.

  • Xinerama with a Mobile Intel 945GM graphics card

    Hi,
    I'm trying to write a xorg.conf to enable Xinerama. But as you've already guessed it isn't working.
    Xinerama works perfectly fine, if i use xrandr.
    Could please look over my config and tell me what's wrong?
    Thanks in advance!

    Blind wrote:Umm, weelll, xorgconfig or X -config might produce something to work with, but in general you need to edit the xorg.conf file for best performance. As to your editing of 'vga' to 'xf86-video-intel': you should replace it with 'intel'. There are many, many sample xorg.conf's out there that use the intel driver, so google is your friend.

    You can specify the amount of videoram in xorg.conf and you need to add the 1280*800 resolution to it too. That's all I had to do to get it to work on my father's laptop.
    Zl.

  • [SOLVED] Macbook 2,1 Intel 945GM: no backlight property custom kernel

    Hi,
    I just finished compiling a custom kernel for my Macbook and for the life of me cannot figure out which option enables backlight control. I'm suspecting it might be CONFIG_FB_BACKLIGHT, but I can't actually find it via 'make menuconfig.' In other words, I can grep it from the raw config, but don't know where it is:
    $ grep -A10 -B10 CONFIG_FB_BACKLIGHT .config

    # CONFIG_FB_PM2 is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_CYBER2000 is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_ARC is not set
    But menuconfig is like this:
    --- Support for frame buffer
    [ ] Enable firmware EDID
    [ ] foreign endianness support --->
    [ ] Video Mode Handling Helpers
    [ ] Tile Blitting Support
    It's hard to reproduce entirely here, but the point is that the config grep returns fb_backlight just above mode helpers/tilebitting, but above those are foreign endianness, and that's not where the backlight setting is.
    The card is the Intel 945GM; on the default Arch kernel I can use xbacklight to adjust brightness. With my custom compiled one, I get "no outputs have backlight property" with xbacklight and, indeed, /sys/class/backlight is empty.
    Would someone kindly tell me which kernel option provides the backlight property for this card?

    @byte:
    Thanks for the suggestion, and the link to the current config. I was wondering where I might find that. Not looking so promising so far:

    I don't see much there to wonder about. CONFIG_FB_BACKLIGHT only gets triggered if certain drivers are enabled. But I don't have any of those. I'm re-compiling right now with one of them, just for kicks, to see what happens. I have the right LCD backlight options set to match the default. On the ACPI front, we have this:

    Most of that seems about right, and the end stuff is all specific laptop drivers.
    I'll post back when this is done. The only other thing I can think of is the fact that I compiled in i915 and intel_agp vs. having them as modules. Should that make any difference?

  • Intel 945GM/GMS/940GML Videoram

    I installed Arch on my new Vaio VGN-N21S with an Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller.
    http://vaio.sony.it/view/ShowProduct.ac … N+N+Series
    I configured Xorg and it runs smoothly with the i810 driver. No issue.
    But I can't use the whole amount of my shared video memory (224 Mb from specifics). Xorg uses only 8Mb, which is enough to get a 1280x800 desktop tough. I would like to play with True Combat Elite and I found videoram is not enough. I tried with the "Videoram" parameter in Xorg.conf... but it is simply ignored by Xorg.
    Nobody knows where's the problem????

    I dont think you need to specify videoram in xorg.conf, xorg should autodetect 256mb for 945gm. try without the videoram and see if it works better. For me it works best when I dont have any xorg.conf and let xorg decide all.

  • Multiple copies of display on Tecra A7 (Intel 945GM)

    I am having problems with my Tecra A7 display, using a Mobile Intel 945GM chip. At one point I started getting multiple copies of my desktop on my screen -- two down, two across, with the very top of the fifth and sixth copy coming in on the bottom.
    Initially this was just for the Toshiba and ??Resuming Windows?? screen, but eventually it stayed this way all the time. Windows works normally, just with four really small copies of the desktop. An attached external monitor works fine. I tried checking the Full screen (no borders) box in the Intel graphics manager, as well as all the hotkeys I saw listed there -- nothing helped.

    Sounds like the display of your notebook has some connection problems or don't know, maybe there is something wrong in general with the display.
    Because, as you already tested an external monitor with your machine, I doubt a driver update or reinstallation would help here.
    Nevertheless you could try it, but to get to know what the exact problem is, go to an ASP and let them check your notebook.

  • Pinkish glow around mouse pointer on external screen.

    Since the last update (10.9.1) my mid-2012 macbook air started showing a very peculiar behaviour.
    Only when connected to an external monitor and waking up from sleep, the mouse pointer on the external monitor comes with a pinkish glow. Very annoying.
    Details:
    - it only appears within the external monitor, if the pointer is moved into the macbook screen the defect disappear.
    - to make it go away, it is enough to unplug and re-plug the external monitor
    - it seems that the shadow and the aliasing around the mouse pointer receives the wrong hue on the ext monitor, but mine is only a guess.
    - connection thunderbolt (original apple adapter to dvi)
    - monitor iiyama prolite B2409HDS
    - it started with the update to 10.9.1. NEVER had a problem before that (since 10.8)
    any thoughts? Is there anybody out there with the same issue?

    Same Issue here. See picture below:
    Mac details:
    Processor  2 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Graphics  Intel Iris Pro
    Software  OS X 10.9.3 (13D65)
    HDMI Cable connected to LG LCD TV
    I'm not sure but it could be that I have started experiencing this glow since a Mavericks update ( I didn't have this issue the first months after upgrading to Mavericks).....
    Did anyone already submit a bug report over here : https://bugreport.apple.com  ????

  • W530, W7-64: external monitor is dark except for mouse pointer

    Hello,
    I'm starting to experience this problem. Initially I had no problems with using an external monitor, but now I cannot use it. When I switch to the external monitor, the screen is dark, except for the mouse pointer which moves correctly.. Anyone know the cause of this problem?
    Regards,
    bostjanv

    I have had same problems using NVIDA Q2000K when using Windows 8.  Try configuring with NVIDA instructions for multiple displays as follows:
     ThinkPad W530       NVIDIA Quadro K1000M or NVIDIA Quadro K2000M           - Computer's analog VGA connector           - Docking Station's analog VGA connector           - Computer's DisplayPort connector           - Docking Station's DVI connector(s) or DisplayPort connector(s)
          Intel HD Graphics Family           - (Computer's LCD)
    DUAL ADAPTER CLONE
      Dual Adapter Clone is a technology where display output from one display   adapter is cloned to another display adapter. This feature is unique for   NVIDIA Optimus Technology starting from second generation Optimus technology.   The only difference between cross adapter clone and traditional clone is that   the former involves two display adapters while the latter involves only one.
    HOW TO CONFIGURE DUAL ADAPTER CLONE
      Dual Adapter Clone is only supported and be configured in NVIDIA Control Panel.   As an example, the procedure below describes the steps on how to configure the   dual adapter clone. Remember that the dual adapter clone involves two   different graphics devices, so the 'Display Topology' section above will give   you an idea which combinations can support dual adapter clone, otherwise, it   is considered as a traditional clone.
      The procedure below assumes to use the LCD and DisplayPort monitor connected   to the computer.   1. Attach a DisplayPort monitor to the computer.   2. Open the NVIDIA Control Panel, and on the left pane, select 'Setup multiple      displays' under 'Display' tree.   3. On the right panel, under 'Select the display you want to use', check both      LCD and DisplayPort monitor.   4. Under 'Verify your display configuration', right click on either the LCD or      DisplayPort display icon.   5. Select 'Duplicate with 1 (use 2 as source)' then click Apply.
      Note: The Dual Adapter Clone can not be enabled by using the Windows display         control panel or the Intel's display control panel.
    Windows 8 also disabled my NVIDA Q2000K and I had to restore it.  I hope this was helpful.

  • Mouse pointer moves but system freezes

    I had this problem for the past 2 months.
    What would happen, was that anything I tried to do by clicking mouse pointer would not work. Pointer would move, but that was it. If I hit ctrl/alt/del, then cancel, it would recover and work fine for a while.
    Tried various solutions, uninstalled untilities etc etc, with no luck.
    Finally realized what was different over past 2 months. I have been using Hotspot to share wifi connection. As soon as I turned that off, everything back to normal.
    Hope this helps someone.

    can't test it because I don't have xfce, but here is my xorg.conf for that intel card, keyboard+touchpad is handled by policykit.

  • Mouse Pointer Disappearing and reappearing

    For the past few days my Mouse Pointer will randomly disappear for unspecified lengths and then reappear. I am using the new Blue Tooth Magic Mouse. It also happens with a wired mouse. I have searched high and low for an answer. I however fall to anyone in this group that would know the answer. Thanks.

    I'm having the same problem, it just started this morning when i did system updates "Security Update 2010-003", "iTunes v. 9.1.1", "Safari 4.0.5", "AirPort Base Station 5.5.1", "Xcode 3.2.2".
    I am using a Mac Pro with a Microsoft mouse, so it has nothing to do with the magic mouse. It's really annoying and making it hard to work! It affects many apps as far as I can tell.

  • Making the mouse cursor invisible.

    I am currently in the deployment phase of software made for two touchscreen kiosks.
    When moving the applications over to these kiosks I realized that we needed to make the mouse cursor invisible.
    I have tried the
    Cursor cursor = new Cursor();// ALthough i was unable to find a cursor constant that gave me an invisible pointer.
    testFrame.setCursor(cursor);
    Any ideas how I could remove the pointer from view alltogether?

    Toolkit tk = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit();
    Image image = tk.getImage("yourPicture.gif");
    Cursor invisibleCursor = tk.createCustomCursor(image, new Point(0,0), "invisible cursor");I usually use a 1 x 1 transparent gif.

  • Rsd? shut down and mouse pointer problems

    hello there
    So, last week I went to the Carrefour Laval apple store to go check out my macbook because it had shut down 3 times in a row for no reason. The genius checked everthing out, ran some tests, and said everything was a-okay, that I might have simply just xperienced a random, insignificant crash. But, yesterday my computer shut down again as I was surfing the internet. I waited about 1 minute and powered it up again. everything seemed fine. so, about 1 hour ago, im checking my emails, when i go up to the toolbar to select a different website, when my mouse pointer seems to start disappearing on and off constantly. so i close my internet window and this weird loud and quick clicking sound comes from my computer. I open up another safari window, and the sound stops. and this happens over and over again as i open and close safari windows. then 10 minutes later, i am watching a dvd when my computer shuts down again! what is going on? Im so tired of this. i would like to have some advice before i go see the genius again. the thing is i cant reproduce the problem for him, it just happens randomly....
    please help me!

    Hi there I am having the same problem. I've been experiencing it often over the past month. First thing you should do is download the latest updates and make sure the firmware is updated which you can get from apple.ca/support. If that doesn't work then take it into a certified repari center that is authorized by Mac. In Toronto I go to CPUsed, Carbon or MacLibrary for repairs. My macbook is still under warranty so I am going to take it in. I am also going to extend my warranty for three years. These intels are great but it is the first year so expect problems.
    Cheers!

  • How to hidden mouse pointer?

    When mouse moves inside Frame, how to hidden mouse pointer?
    Thanks,
    Quinten

    It depends on what you mean. If you want to make the cursor invisible, here is one way of doing it:
                ImageIcon emptyIcon = new ImageIcon(new byte[0]);
                Cursor invisibleCursor = getToolkit().createCustomCursor(
                    emptyIcon.getImage(), new Point(0,0), "Invisible");
                frame.getContentPane().setCursor(invisibleCursor);Note that even though the cursor is invisible it will still be a cursor, i.e. you can click on buttons etc.
    Or do you want to disable the cursor completely?

  • Black screen after waking from sleep, but mouse pointer visible

    I'm not sure if this is the same as the many other posts on problems connecting the Mac Mini to an external monitor. In my case, after it wakes, there is no login menu - but the mouse pointer is visible and I can move it around the screen no problem.
    At present, I have to power the Mac Mini down and back up again, which is unacceptable.
    What's causing this and how can I fix it?

    Yes, I have this problem too. I reported to Apple about 3 or 4 weeks ago. They said no one else ever reported it and said they would escalate it but they have never got back too me. It is a pain because my mini is a media center pc and hard to get to when this happens.
    For now the work around I use is to unplug the mini dvi connecter and plug it back in; this fixes the issue until the next time it happens.
    +My mini (2009 version) is connected using the mini-dvi connector to a Denon receiver (with a DVI->hdmi connector) which is then connected to a sony 1080p TV. This replaced an older mini (intel duo) which did not have this problem using the same setup.+

  • Changing colour/inverting colour of mouse pointer

    I am using Tiger on an intel-based mac mini, but would like to change the colour of my mouse pointer to make it easier to spot.. has anyone got any suggestions?
    mini   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    You can make the cursor larger with the "Mouse" pane
    of the "Universal Access" System Preference. It
    helps a lot on a large screen.
    i know you can change the pointer size - I have done that, but i find looking for a black arrow difficult. I want to change the colour!

    Hello. The title speaks for itself. I've noticed very poor performance in video playback on the community catalyst-dkms driver. Will this go away with the catalyst driver from Vi0L0's repository? It's more up to date, and it works with XvBA. Does any
