Mouse required to turn on Mouse Keys!

This is possibly the most asinine thing I've run into yet on the Mac. Within the system preferences, I have not found any way to navigate the options within any given preferences pane window using the keyboard, including the Universal Access preferences pane! It seems that in order to turn on universal access, one must be able to use the computer in normal mode. I can't imagine it would be so difficult to make the preferences panes navigatable via the tab key (or tab+modifier key), as is done in the Windows operating system. Am I missing something here?
  Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Bruce's reply is correct, but perhaps a little brief.
To turn on Mouse Keys without a mouse, do the following:
0) Press Ctrl-F2. Focus moves to Apple menu, which is highlighted.
1) Press down arrow five times. System Preferences is highlighted.
2) Press Return. System Preferences opens.
3) Type UNIV. Universal Access pane is highlighted, everything else is greyed out.
4) Press Return. Universal Access opens.
5) Press Tab once, then right arrow three times. The Mouse Keys pane opens.
6) Turn Mouse Keys on by pressing Tab once, then left arrow (a radio button is activated).
7) It's a good idea to press Tab once more, then Space bar. This sets the option to activate Mouse Keys using the Option key. Once this is done, press Option five times to toggle Mouse Keys on and off.
Hope this helps,
Archie

    Hello,
Can you please help me, how to uncheck, Press option key five times to turn Mouse keys on or off, Coz its greyed out
I can't click it. Thanks for the help.

From the Finder menu bar, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... and enter
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.universalaccess.plist
in the text box that opens. A Finder window will open with a file selected. Press the key combination command-I to open the Info window. In the Sharing & Permissions section of that window, do you have read & write access? Is the file locked? What is its modification date?

  • Unable to turn on Mouse Keys

    Hi,
I was using the Universal Access Mouse Keys in System Preferences fine (with an Apple keyboard with number pad).
I've upgraded to Lion, and all was still well.
However they have suddenly stopped working, and I can't re-enable them.  If I select 'On' it immediately flicks back to 'Off'.
The Console reports the following error:
System Preferences: Failed to get the Mouse Keys Ignore Trackpad Key value (error = -536870206)
Re-booting the MacBookPro does not help.
    Please help,
    Robert.

    I've filed a bug report.

  • Using Arrow Keys to Move Pointer - Mouse Keys?

Hello, I am trying to use Universal Access on a new MacBook Pro.
Ideally, I would like to move the screen pointer by holding the function key (or some command type key) and the directional arrows - instead of using the mouse. Is there a way to map the keys to do this?
I tried to turn on Universal Access and turning on Mouse Keys, but there are no instructions in the Help section that tell you which keys move in what directions. Anyhow, after confirming that it was on, no keys would move the pointer or do any mouse functions.
    Thank you!

    Hello Saksiri-san,
Mouse Keys are controlled by the numeric keys which form a secondary keypad in the block: J->1, K->2, L->3, ;->-, U->4, I->5, O->6, P->*, 7->7, 8->8, 9->9, 0->/. M gives 0 and / gives +, all on an English-language keyboard of course. The movement is U or 4 to the left, O or 6 to the right and so on. The I or 5 key gives the mouse click.
Once Mouse Keys are on, you will normally need to use the fn key as well as those in the secondary numeric keypad to move the mouse. This can be avoided by setting the default option to "software functions" in the Keyboard tab of the Keyboard and Mouse pane of System Preferences.

  • Mouse keys

Hi, my mouse has stopped working. How do I turn on mouse keys through my keyboard?

If you have preset the option in System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts for the Tab key to move keyboard focus between "All controls" there is a way.
Press Fn-Control-F2 and the icon for the Apple menu should be highlighted. (You can move to other menus by using the right and left arrow keys if needed, though not in this case).
Press the down arrow key. This should open the Apple menu.
Press the down arrow key again until the item System Preferences is highlighted.
Press the Return key, and System Preferences should open.
Press the tab key, and the items in the System Preferences array should be highlighted in turn. Once one of the is highlighted, you can also use the arrow keys to move the selection choice.
Move the selection choice until the item Universal Access is highlighted.
Press Option-Spacebar which should open that item.
Use the Tab key to highlight the tab Mouse.
Press Option-Spacebar to open that tab.
Use the Tab key to highlight the "Press the Option key five times to toggle Mouse Keys" item.
Press Option-Spacebar to checkmark that item.
Then, when you need to use Mouse Keys you can press Option five times in a row and it will become active; press it five times in a row again to toggle Mouse Keys off. Note - while Mouse Keys is active, some normal keyboard functioning (such as being able to type characters) may not be available.

  • How to use the validation work in Both TAB and Mouse keys in Forms6i

    Hi,
I have a validation script once it's validated it should execute the query. But using When-Validate-Item i can't use execute_query.I am able to use the validation in Key-Next-Item trigger but if the user moves the cursor using mouse then it's not working.
How to use the validation script working in Both Scenarios(Tab and Mouse keys).
Can anyone please give inputs to rectify the above issue?.

So you have multiple fields, but on at least one of them if it's valid you immediately want to execute the query?
You could create a hidden field in a control block Query_Now default 'N'. In a WHEN-VALIDATE-ITEM on your item, if it's determined to be valid, then set Query_Now to 'Y'.
In a WHEN-NEW-ITEM-INSTANCE at block level, check if Query_Now is 'Y'. If it is then execute the query (and set it back to 'N').

I am facing problem in playing yahoo pool in Firefox 4 while it was working fine in Firefox 3.6. In Firefox 4 the combination of mouse keys are not working properly.

I updated to Firefox 4.01 today and the middle scroll button on my Lenovo T400 stopped working. I downloaded the updated Ultranav utility and the Ultranav driver for my T400 from here http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-72858.html and then uninstalled the "Thinkpad Ultranav Driver" from Add/Remove programs rebooted and then installed the updated utility and driver (another reboot) and it now works perfectly.
So glad to get this working again.

  • Mapping keyboard and mouse keys onto my gamepad

I'm using arch linux x86_64 and I want to map some keyboard and mouse keys onto my gamepad to play games which don't support the gamepad directly. How can I do this?

    Have you tried using xbindkeys?
    Do
    xbindkeys -k
to see what your buttons are mapped to..
    Also QJoyPad.

  • Problem with the mouse key

    Hello,
I can't speak english very well. but I try it
My problem is that my trackpad mouse key sometimes doesn't work completly.
    what can I do?
    thanks

First, you have to try and determine if it's software or hardware related. It sounds though, like you may have a trackpad issue.
    1. Try using a mouse plugged into the unit. Does it do it then?
    2. Login as another User. Does it do it then?
    3. Boot from your install DVD and play with it there. Can you get it to act up now?

  • Mouse keys slow

I like to you the "mouse keys" setting on my keyboard to control the cursor (accessed through system preferences > universal access > mouse). However, there is a lag between the time a press a direction key and the time the cursor begins moving. I have set the intitial delay to "short." Is there a way to reduce that lag?
    thanks in advance

    steppJ,
did you spray Windex directly on the keyboard, or did you spray a cloth and then use the cloth to wipe the keyboard?

  • Universal Access Mouse Keys Double Click Broken In Lion

    Hi,
Lion has made a couple of changes to the Universal Access Mouse Keys, BUT...
You can no longer double click with the 5 key...
This is a HUGE problem for users reliant on this to counter RSI problems.
    To reproduce:
In Universal Access, toggle Mouse Keys to 'On'.  Open a text document, hover the cursor over a word, and double click using the number pad 5 key.
Prior to Lion this selected the word.  In Lion this is no longer happens.
I am using an Apple keyboard with number pad and a MacBookPro.
    Please re-instate this functionality.
    Regards,
    Rob.

This was fixed in 10.7.2 or 3 from memory, but returned in 10.8 and remains in 10.8.2.
I use Keyboard Maestro to map F17 on my keyboard to double-click, Ctrl+F17 to triple-click
