Mouse scroll ball doesn't launch Dashboard any more

I have my scroll ball button on my mouse set in System Preferences to start Dashboard. In the last day it has quit working. Anyone have any ideas what I can do to get it working again? It still works for scrolling and when I press it it starts a menu that launches:
Start in Spotlight
Start in Google
Look up in Dictionary
Cut
Copy
Paste etc...
Thanks,
Roger

Yes tried both killall Finder and killall Dock to no avail.
I just got off the phone with AppleCare they're sending a new one. Dang, I really wanted this one to last a long time!

Roger

  • Dashboard & Mighty Mouse Scroll Ball

I love the feature on my Mac that I can press the scroll ball down and my dashboard comes up instantly showing me the weather before I go to work. My mouse got dirty-the scroll ball wouldnt work going up, so I cleaned it. Rubbing alcohol and figure 8 patterns on a sheet of paper-just like they did in my local Apple store(after having many issues with the ball not working). We have done this many times, but now, the dashboard will not come up. I have to click on it in the dock, but it will "disappear" when I click the scroll ball. How can I get it to appear with the ball like it used to???

I honestly don't know if this will help, but try resetting the SMC.

  • My mouse scroll ball will not scroll down.

My mouse scroll ball will not scroll down.

Unfortunately the Mighty Mouse is known to have issues when scrolling if it gets dirty. The best you can do is hold it upside down and roll the ball back and forth in every direction for a minute or so, this should help clean it any it may start working again. My school's multimedia lab has 20 workstations that all have that mouse and about half of them work! I'd recommend moving to the magic mouse or another brand's mouse if cleaning does not fix it.

  • Mighty Mouse Scroll Ball always breaks

Hi, I have a 2 month old iMac, and This has been a problem for about 6 weeks, but I haven't gotten around to posting it. My mighty mouse scroll ball breaks repeatedly and I have been fixing it, but it is a real pain. Don't suggest not using my mighty mouse, because I love and hate it, I love how it has multiple buttons, but hate how the scroll ball breaks all the time, can someone help me?

It just needs cleaning. Use a damp cotton rag and vigorously move it across the mouse ball. Do this for about 30 seconds. BTW, there are instructions in your owners manual about this. This is from page 63 of your Users Guide:
    *Cleaning Your Mighty Mouse*
You may need to clean your mouse from time to time to remove dirt and dust that has
accumulated in the scroll ball area. Hold the mouse upside-down and roll the scroll ball
vigorously with the cloth that came with your iMac, or another clean, soft, lint-free
cloth, to help dislodge any particles that may interfere with proper scrolling.

  • Mouse scroll ball not working

How can you clean the mouse scroll ball to make it scroll again?

    Hello:
Turn the mouse upside down and run it (vigorously) over a piece of paper.  Better yet, run it upside down over a micro-fiber cloth.

  • Scroll ball doesn't work

scroll ball doesn't work. there is nothing like NOKIA as we can easily view messages through NOKIA PC Suite

what u can try to do is to press the ball a little harder while scrolling this can take the dust out of the device.
or if u are really handy you can take out the ball to clean it yourself
else it is an internal problem that can only be solved by sending it to a repair center

  • The mouse scroll wheel doesn't work with Xorg

I recently installed Solaris 10 on my x86 box. One issue is that the mouse scroll wheel doesn't work with Xorg. Hmmm... Okay, it sometimes did work, and most of the time went on strike, and recovered at random. This pattern continued.
My mouse is an ordinary PS/2 one with two buttons and a scroll wheel. I want to promise that there's absolutely nothing wrong with it per se. Here is some info:

    Hossein,
As Guido said, you can  use BootCamp to partition the drive. If you want to install, or reinstall Windows. You would launch BootCamp and it will actually guide you through the installation, you will only need to decide how large a partition you want. I would use BootCamp, I would not use disk utility. When you have installed Windows and you want to boot into windows, when you start your MBP hold down the option key, this will give you trha option of booting Mac OSX or Windows.

My macbook pro no longer connects to my TV with the mini dvi to hdmi adapter. A while ago the computer fell down and hit the cable. How can I tell if the computer is working ok. Doesn't show mirroring any more. Was working while watching a movie but when I pulled it out from the computer and put it back in the system would no longer mirrorr the screen on the TV.

The best option is an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  The evaluation will be for FREE!

Does anyone know why the Abandoned Cart report doesn't show results any more? We know we have has some occur in the past.

    Hi MandaWeb2,
This was reported as a bug to the dev team. I don't have an ETA for you on when it will be fixed, but it's certainly with them.
    Cheers,

  • Mighty Mouse scroll ball problem

I have had this Mighty Mouse for about a year and a half and the only problem has been the scroll ball. Every once in a while it won't scroll down. I was told to hold it upside down and rub the ball good with a wool cloth. Basically every time it did the trick. Now it won't scroll down anymore (it scrolls everywhere else though). Is there something broken inside? Is there anyway to take it apart? Not being able to scroll down is quite annoying and I'd love to be able to do it again.
Scrolling down, the ball moves but doesn't make the little clicking like sound like it does in any other direction. Any advice?

Hi. Sometimes using a clear spirit such as denatured alcohol (or vodka...) instead of the water suggested here
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302417
helps - but I've had one that wouldn't be fixed, and was replaced. Good Luck.

  • Mighty Mouse Scroll Ball & Quicktime

I accidently noticed recently that the scroll ball on an Apple Mighty Mouse will scroll forwards and backwards through a Quicktime movie. This is pretty neat.
One problem. The volume slider also scrolls up and down! It doesn't matter where the mouse curser is placed. The volume slider and the video slider move up and down together. That's pretty stupid.
Is this a known bug or do I have something set up wrong? Thanks.

Thinking a bit more about this, I wouldn't expect an up/down movement to scroll the main video slider left/right. Up/down for the volume would make more sense as would left/right for the video.
Up/down scrolls text up and down through a window. Video editors scroll audio and video timelines left/right. Moving the ball up/down for this action is not a natural inclination.
Furthermore, I don't think that controlling volume via the ball to be that great of a feature in any case. Plus as I've learned, it's a little difficult to quickly scroll video without affecting the volume in some way or another.

  • Might mouse scroll ball issue

I got my Might Mouse just about a year ago. I'm having issues with the scroll ball. It works scrolling up with no problem, but scrolling down it does not work. To be clear, it can scroll but it doesn't make the page on Safari scroll down with it.
Anyone else have this issue? Any way to clean it?

  • Mighty Mouse scroll ball problems

I wondered if anyone could help me with a scrolling issue with the mighty mouse. Some days scrolling works vertically up and down and other times just one direction. I dont believe it is due to dirt in the mouse - it seems software related and is sporadic in its operation. Any advise you could give would be welcome
    Thanks
    Nick

DP, that is what worked best for me in the past.
After months of problems with the scrolling ball, and after trying all the suggestions found on the web, this method of using a white sheet of paper was an excellent one: my MM was again clean and working as if it was new!
However, be careful about it: don't push too much when running the MM upside down. Eventually, yes, the gunk will come out, but the ball would go down-inside the case if pressed too hard for too long. It happened to me when using this method for a second time, and I was in the need to disassemble the device in order to correct this, and I think that's exactly what I was trying to avoid in the first place.
    Hope it helps.
    JJ
