Mouse scrolling in lion problems

I'm using a traditional mouse with a scroll wheel.  The mouse scrolling behavior is really odd in Lion and it seems to have something to do with bounce scrolling.
Scrolling in apps like Safari works fine and is very responsive where bounce scrolling is disabled.  For apps like Xcode where bounce scrolling is enabled it feels like the the app is "catching up" to scroll movements and it has this acceleration effect.  It only seems to happen for me in apps where you are scrolling through text and it just feels sluggish to me.
Everything felt find in Snow Leopard so I'm not sure what changed behind the scenes in Lion.  I'd just like it to work the way it did in Snow Leopoard!  Thanks for any help you can offer.

It's been moved to System Preferences > Universal Access > Mouse & Trackpad tab > Trackpad options... button.
Check Scroll with inertia.

  • Can't set up new Magic Mouse scrolling with Lion

I am running Lion on my MacBook Pro and just got a brand new Magic Mouse. I can pair it with the computer and move the pointer, right and left click, but no scrolling or middle button clicking. When I go into System Preferences and select Mouse, I only have the options to "Move content in the direction of finger movement when scrolling," Tracking Speed, Double-Click Speed, Scrolling Speed, Primary mouse button and Zoom using scroll wheel while holding ^Control.
Nowhere do I see the little video and gestures window like I see for my trackpad preferences. I thought maybe I had to install the Wireless Mouse Software, but all I can find is a version for Snow Leopard and my computer will not open the file because it says it's incompatible.
Is scrolling (just up, down, left or right like in a browser) not possible in Lion with a Magic Mouse? What am I missing?

Your missing the Magic Mouse Preference pane.  Sometimes 3rd party drivers interfere with this.  USB overdrive has been reported the most.  Your Magic Mouse Preferences should look like this:
If you can find the culprit and uninstall it, this pane should return.

  • Possible temporary fix for mouse scroll wheel problem in Lion

This is a potential temporary fix for those users of Lion who are unable to fix the reversed mouse scroll wheel issue. I myself have a Microsoft Arc Mouse (not the touch version but the original version) and when I went into the mouse system preferences there was no checkmark box option to return the scroll wheel to its original configuration. When I called Apple about it I was told it's an issue with Lion not recognizing the mouse as being able to reverse the scroll wheel and that Microsoft will need to update the firmware to allow for this change. On a whim, I tried out my wife's Logitech mouse (can't remember the model but it's a fairly recent one) and checked the system preferences. This time there was the checkmark box to allow the scroll wheel to be returned to its original configuration and I could use the scroll wheel as normal. When I plugged my Arc Mouse back in, the scroll wheel had reverted to its original configuration of rotate the wheel down for down scroll and up for up scroll.
So, for those of you who are unable to correct your scroll wheel through preferences, you might want to try plugging in another mouse, making the correction in system preferences, and then plug your original mouse back in.

I mean it. Apple makes major changes in the way things have worked for years, then makes that change the default, causing 1m people to struggle. Bad Bad App le.
There other changes like this in Lion as well, which are arbitrary and are "App le" policy now, which even App le themselves do not follow! (e.g. Cmd-Delete for "Don't Save" in a few App le applications, where 900 million people have used Cmd-<first letter of button> already, for years)
And yes, I did have to go next door and borrow a mouse. "Why?" they said... "I have a Mac" I said. "<laughter> get a real computer" they said. App le does itself no favors by pulling this stuff.
Many of us cannot buy new equipment when arbitrary changes are made, and "get a new driver" is a slap in the face, especially when such changes as Reversing scroll for many-millions could easily be done by making the "new way" an Option, not a default.
Don't get me wrong, Mac and iPhone etc are way ahead of MS and all, but the rabid arrogance inside App le is App aulling.

  • PSE Organizer 13.1 - Mouse scroll problem

Scrolling from picture to picture using the mouse scroll wheel worked fine in Organizer 13. After upgrading to 13.1 scroll forward no longer works, but scroll back still works fine. Is this a bug in the program, or something I do?

This has already been reported and acknowledged by Adobe; you can add your vote to the discussion in the feedback forum (above link), that's how it's prioritized.
There is no problem with your own configuration, but the problem is there and there is no fix available, only workarounds as mentionned in this discussion.
You can get back to version 13.0 if you can't live with that, but you would lose the advantages of version 13.1, which may have been negligible for you.
As a matter of fact, the advantages of version 13.1 were critical for some users (hdpi screen, video audio...) and negligible for other users like me. On the other hand I don't care for the scroll bug, I am quite at ease with the keyboard and I did not even notice it before it was reported. I could have reverted to 13.0 but that was not worth the trouble for me.
I have no inside knowledge of how Adobe will fix the bug. I am convinced it's now tracked and corrected, but will there be an update version or patch before version 14, I don't know...

  • My magic mouse scrolls backwards with Lion

After upgrading to Lion the up and down movements on my Magic Mouse are backwards. I move my finger down and the page goes up, and the reverse is true when motioning up.

See "magic mouse scrolls in reverse/backwards" for the answer.

  • Lion mouse scroll speed scrolling too fast

System Pref > Mouse > Scrolling Speed is set to the slowest level and it is still way too fast!  Heard others complaining about this on a Parallels discussion group and thought I would post here.  Incease the range of scrolling sensitivity in an update please!  Reply to this post if you are having the same issue.
Scrolling was always way to fast in leopard when using Iphoto, but this with Lion it is too fast everywhere else except for huge files.

I suppose you are using a non-Apple mouse. You will need to update the software, and adjust the tracking multiplier within the software.
Logitech just came out with an update for Lion.

  • Mouse scroll intermittent problem

Sometimes my mouse scroll button will not work properly and it is diffucult and annoying when trying to scroll down a page or website. I went into system preferences and adjusted the scroll button back and forth, then left it in the centre. My mouse seems to have improved but there is still a slight internittent problem with the scroll ball. I thought that I might need a new mouse but suspect that the problem may be software related and not hardware. Can anyone help with this?

Yipeeee! Thanks guys I tried the white paper method and pressed quite hard rolling that track ball on the paper there was quite a bit of unseen dirt on there. I then wiped it over again with a clean damp cloth and my mouse is now fully functional.... good tips!

  • Why are routine processes (mouse scrolling, viewing videos, appearance of typed text) filled with pauses? I've disabled or uninstalled most of my plug-ins, and don't encounter this problem with other browsers.

My problem is unique to the Firefox browser, and does not occur with Opera or IE.
Way too often (about once a minute or so), Firefox will suffer a brief pause in performing functions, even simple ones.
It is impossible for me to watch any video in Firefox without the picture pausing periodically. Oftentimes, text I type suffers a delay before appearing in a web form. Mouse scrolling is not very dependable at all.
I have disabled or uninstalled most of my plug-ins and add-ons, yet the problem still persists. I have attempted to streamline to only the most necessary plug-ins, but to no avail.
I love Firefox, but I don't like the choppy videos or downgrading of my productivity these problems are causing.

  • Mouse scrolling problem

My iMac is around two years old, and I'm on my third mouse. Why? Because of the scrolling ball. The present mouse scrolls in all directions except down. But previous mouses have stopped scrolling in more than one direction. I have read articles (including the stuff from Apple Support), and I have, I think, tried just about everything (except take it apart, as one article instructed). The mice work fine for a while--then come the scrolling problems. I've tried rubbing the ball (mouse upside down) vigorously on a lint-free cloth, and I regularly (when problems inevitably arise) clean the ball with alcohol and a Q-tip. The latter does get the ball pretty clean, and it works for a while; but eventually even this doesn't correct the scrolling problem (as is the case right now). So, unless someone can give me a suggestion that might work (with Mighty Mouse), can anyone recommend a non-Apple mouse--something not too expensive but of good quality?
    Thank you,
    Carl Kalwaitis

Hi Carl, I used mice (Mighty included) but always went back to the trackball. You don't move your wrist and it is very precise. I have had the same trackball for three years and my Mighty Mouse (which came with my new iMac) is still in it's original packaging. I have a Logitech Marble Mouse. It has all the scrolling and other functions that the MM has. Give it a try and save yourself some exasperation.

  • I JUST INSTALLED MOUNTAIN LION, NOW THE SCROLL BALL ON MY MAGID MOUSE SCROLLS IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION THAN IT DID BEFORE. I NOW HAVE TO ROLL THE BALL UP TO SCROLL DOWN

I JUST INSTALLED MOUNTAIN LION, NOW THE SCROLL BALL ON MY MAGIC MOUSE SCROLLS IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION THAN IT DID BEFORE. I NOW HAVE TO ROLL THE BALL UP TO SCROLL DOWN.

If you go into System Preferences> Mouse. There is a box at the top of the screen that states Scroll direction: natural.
Be sure to uncheck the box after installing MOUNTAIN LION, then the mouse ball will scroll in uthe normal fashion.
       Thanks for all the help...

  • Mighty mouse scrolling problems

I'm having trouble with my mighty mouse scrolling. It was working fine now not. I just replaced the batteries after indicatortold me to do so. I've tried re-loading the software (though the install routine called it an upgrade).

    Mine wont scroll down.
    Up, left, right no problem.
If I put the mouse near my ear I can hear a soft clicking when I scroll up, left or right, but no sound when I scroll down.
I have tried cleaning and pressing hard, etc.
I just got off a 47 minute troubleshooting session with apple support and they finally agreed to replace it. I can't believe how nontechnical and unknowledgeable the level 1 support at apple is. It was clearly a mechanical trouble and I described it very clearly, yet they insisted on making me log into other accounts, check preferences, replace batteries, etc. On top of that I was put on hold several times while the tech checked with others about what to do and filled out forms, etc. I have to say I really am not happy with apple support based on this and all previous experiences. On top of this I have to give a credit card# as collateral until I send the defective unit back. If that is the policy why don't they save the 47 minutes and just process the replacement just like the cell phone companies do??
Oh well. Good luck to all of you with your mouse problems..

  • Can't do Ctrl+Mouse Scroll in Mtn. Lion

Prior to this, Ctrl+ Mouse Scroll would enlarge or decrease the size of what was in Mail, Safari and other apps. Updated to 10.8.2, today, and it no longer works. Any idea whether I can get this capability again?

    Press Option Command F5
Then enable the zoom options at the top to enable zoom using scroll gestures.

  • Anyone else have a problem with Magic mouse scroll after Maverick update?

Now I have upgraded to Maverick (among other minor things) my Magic Mouse scroll often doesnt work unless I close the application it stopped working in and open it again.
Has anyone else had this issue? Is there a fix? was there any worthwhile reason to update?

This has happened to me, in fact, why I'm even searching in here...I need help too to fix it! It's so annoying!

  • How do I fix scrolling in Lion?

I've read in various places that you can revert scrolling in Lion back to how it was Snow leopard via an option under preferences under either "mouse" or "trackpad," but unfortunately I don't have this option on my system.
I have an early '08 Macbook and use the previous version of apple's BT (mighty) mouse. Any thoughts or ideas? This reverse scrolling is driving me nuts!

Hm.  That sounds like a corrupted preference pane.
I don't know when you installed Lion, but if it wasn't today, you could check to see if the preference pane has been modified since you installed Lion. Look at /System/Library/PreferencePanes/Trackpad.prefPane and see if the file has been modified since you installed Lion.
If it has, and you have a Time Machine (or other) backup, you could restore the preference pane from the backup right after you installed Lion.
I'm not sure if you can download the Trackpad software from Apple Downloads - it's possible to do so for earlier versions (http://support.apple.com/downloads/#trackpad), but I'm not sure if they'll work for Lion.

    Some other info:
You  know that you can control Photoshop input fields http://screencast.com/t/ApVseKYRxz with the mouse scroll wheel. Pretty handy indeed. You just have to click on the field and spin the wheel and values changing.
    The problem:
My mouse wheel cannot control the input fields in this way. I select the field, spin the wheel and nothing happen. When I spin it faster a couple of times, than the values get changing - pretty strange ha? Scrolling normally - do not change, scrolling fast change. But to scroll fast is not an option because I cannot change the values slightly with small increments... There is a bug really...
What I tried and didn't work:
    1. Restarted Photoshop
    2. Plug/Unplug and change different USB slots for both receivers.
    3. Reintalling latest SetPoint Drivers (after uninstall I run ccleaner)
    4. Put all SetPoint settings to defaults (because I programmed some mouse keys to Photoshop specifically).
    5. Install earlier versions of SetPoint drivers.
    6. Set my UEFI BIOS to defaults.
    7. Restarted the BIOS to load all the drivers again, but still no luck
(the last think I didn't do is to reinstall Photoshop)
What I have investigated so far:
    1. When I restart the computer and run Photoshop it works perfect HA! , but after a seconds it do not words again ...
    2. When I stop SetPoint software, when I shut down it, it words perfect.
    3. When I unplug keyboard receiver it words perfect, but I do not have keyboard:)
    4. Everything works perfect in Illustrator and After effects.
    5. Also I noticed that when I scroll images in CameraRaw - http://screencast.com/t/xKnn6cY9 the I have to scroll harder and spin the wheel harder to scroll - the same problem.
    6. Also in photoshop and bridge scrolling here - is pretty smooth and works perfect - http://screencast.com/t/75IXMG6Zria
Maybe the most important part - When I start experiencing the problem:
I had same configuration , same everything and everything worked fine.
I installed SSD disk, reinstalled Windows (same like before), updated my BIOS to UEFI. Installed Photoshop and SetPoint and problem started.
Posted same request to Logitech, but want to ask you for help too.
    Thanks!

    Hi all,
    I found a solution.
    1. Uninstall your current Setpoint Driver.
    2. Run CCleaner - http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
    3. Download an older version of SetPoint - http://www.oldapps.com/setpoint.php
    (I used SetPoint 6.15 (x64), I tried 6.20, 6.32, 6.50 , but no luck)
    4. Now everything is all right!
    Thanks!
Can somebody mark this as solved? Thanks!
    SK
