Mouse speeds up when iMac is shut off.

I slow the mouse speed way down because of my tremors. Every time I shut the iMac down and restart I get a speedy mouse at start up. I have to go into the mouse prefs to slow it down. Why will it not stay where I set it? I'm probably missing a simple setting.

George,
Try restarting in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible one is corrupt.

  • IMac G5 shuts off by himself

    hello everybody,
I have an iMAC G5 20' and I just update the system with Tiger X.4.7 a week ago and since then my iMac is shutting off abruptely by himself without any warnings. It happens two times last week and tonight it happens twice.
The overall temperature of the Mac seems correct
Anyone has any idea ? I already saw that some MAc Book users seems to have the same problem !
Any comments ? Thanks for your help
    Jipes

    Hi, Jipes.
Could be a power supply problem or an issue with mains power: assure the power cord is connected properly to the computer and mains power, and that the power cord is undamaged. Try a different power socket. If you use a UPS, be sure the battery is good.
As far as general iMac G5 troubleshooting goes:
    1. See if your computer's serial number is in the range specified in the "iMac G5 Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues" document.
    2. Rule out potential hardware problems. Run the Apple Hardware Test that came with the computer. Instructions for doing so will be found in the hardcopy manual that accompanied your computer. For additional details, see my "Apple Hardware Test" FAQ.
    3. Check the diagnostic LEDs, a feature of your iMac G5. See "About the iMac G5 diagnostic LEDs."
    4. If your iMac G5 will not turn on, see "iMac G5: Troubleshooting when your computer won't turn on."
    5. See also the iMac Service & Support site.
    6. Check the iMac G5 Discussions for similar reports from other users.
    7. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    8. If the computer is either under warranty or covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, don't hesitate to take advantage of your warranty and contact AppleCare.
    Good luck!

  • My 27inch iMac automatically shuts off

My 27 inch iMac will shut off automatically after about 30 to 45 minutes - it will not turn on when using the on/off power button.  I have to unplug from the wall, hold down the on/off power button for 10 seconds, plug it back into the wall then usually, it will turn on.  I have tried using different wall outlets and not using a power strip but unless i follow the previous steps, it will not turn on. I ran an apple diagnostic test - it showed no issues with the hardware.  It was purchased from the apple refurbished store in April of 2013.  For hardware -processor 3.2 GHZ quad core intel core i5 - memory 8GB 1600MHz DDR3,  graphics - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX  -software - OS X, iLife '11

I think you should have received a 1 year warranty on this Mac, so I would take it in and have them fix it for free. If this is happening routinely at about the same time after boot up it sounds like an overheating issue, which is most likely hardware related.

  • IMac suddenly shut off.

I was using my iMac earlier today when it suddenly shut off. The only programs I had opened were Safari and iTunes. I put my hands on top of the computer and noticed that it felt especially hot. Could the cause of my iMac shutting off be because it got too hot? Should I be concerned about possible damages that may have occurred? I appreciate your help.
One more thing; my iMac won't go to sleep according to the inactive time that I have specified in the Energy Saver settings. It only goes to sleep when I access the sleep command or push the power button. Otherwise it just stays on. Thanks again.

Thanks for all your replies, guys. I hadn't logged in since Monday so I didn't know that there had been more posts since then. Anyways, to address why there hasn't been a recall or any public recognition of the problem (that I know of), I have a theory: after all the Apple commercials that basically boil down to "Macs are better than PCs because Macs work," how bad would it look that they would have to do a major recall on these new iMacs?
This is actually my first Mac. I was really stoked about it because everyone that I spoke to that had owned Macs never had any complaints. I'm getting a little concerned now. We've spent good money on these machines and apparently for a lot of us they are turning out to be a major headache. If I wanted a computer that performed poorly I would have bought a PC and spent half the money (sorry to all the PC guys out there. I've had some bad experiences with PCs that helped fuel my decision to purchase a Mac).
Anyways, I've had another unexpected shutdown earlier today so I'm going to call Apple again and see what they say. For any of you who are having this problem and are going to call Apple for the first time, your support may go something like this: turn the computer off and turn it on again holding the Command, Option, P and R buttons simultaneously. Then, using the Disk Utility, you will verify the disk. Mine claimed that everything "seemed" to be okay and as of Monday I was to monitor my system and call back if it happened again. I'm going to call them again and I'll let you all know what they say.
Dennis, thanks for the link. I have not read it yet, but I will. I'll keep you all updated. Thanks again and good luck to all of you as you try to get your Mac issues resolved.

When I connect iPad to Macbook Pro through USB Port or even charge my iPad via the apple adapter, it has no response at all. I can only charge my iPad when I totally shut off the iPad. Pls advise.

Well ... the charger is the original charger and just checked and confirmed it is a 5.1V charger. How come? Next is why when i connect my iPad via original usb cable, no response from macbook pro? used to sync with iTunes now totally dead.

  • The fan on my iMac never shuts off?

The fan on my iMac never shuts off? Would someone be able to suggest what is the probable cause of this and what can I do about it?

Sometimes an SMC reset can help resolve this. If it fixes it but proves to be temporary a trip to the workshop may be needed:

  • Are disk images ejected when computer is shut off?

My computer just shut off on me unexpectedly, something is wrong with me and I need to take it to get fixed, but I had a disk image open with personal files in it including social security information and the likes, and I wouldn't want them to be seen by whoever is fixing my laptop, and I was just wondering if it would have been ejected when the computer shut off? Thank you!

Yes, they will be ejected. However, if the image files are on your hard drive, then anyone could gain access if they aren't encrypted images.

  • IMac Retina shuts off USB ports when sleeping

I have a new iMac Retina i7 with 32GB RAM running Yosemite. Approximately 60% percent of the time, when the iMac goes to sleep, it shuts off all of the USB ports. This includes dumping hard drives without properly ejecting them, as well as shutting off powered USB hubs. Switching the drives and hubs around to different ports does not help the problem, and it appears to be becoming more frequent. Any suggestions would be welcome.

I too am having hub issues with my 5K iMac. I purchased an Amazon Basics hub, that never worked at all. I returned it and got one made by vantec. I have two external hard drives connected to it, and they always are recognized after sleep or restart. But other things get dropped, like my two printers. I seem to be able to resolve the dropped hub ports by ejecting my external hard drives and then unplugging the power to the hub, then reconnecting the power. When i do, all the indicator lights come on again, and things work.
I am working with Vantec about this issue, they have been terrific by email, and they are offering to replace the hub. But now I am wondering if something more basic is wrong, like this SMC reset that has been mentioned in this thread. I was about to ask if that was hard to do, but I just looked at the link provided by Ralph, and doing it is easy-peasy. I will give this a try, and try to remember to report back.
    thanks, Peter

  • 1st Generation iMac G5 shuts off all of a sudden

My iMac G5 keeps shutting off all of a sudden. Also when I turn it on it shuts off 2 out of 3 times in about 5 secs. anyone have any ideas on whether this is a hardware or a software problem?
I had the power supply replaced through the warranty agreement about 2 yrs ago.

I too have a rev a imac and I too had problems a year ago, with kernel panics and sudden shutdowns. I took it for repair after noticing capacitors bulging and leaking, just to the right of the power socket. The bad capacitors had "x" on the bottom. I was told the mid plane had been replaced and everything seemed to be ok.
    Guess what?
3 days ago, it started happening again.
Just now I had a look in the back, and surprise, surprise, there are bulging and leaking capacitors, this time to the left of the power socket. Again the leaking capacitors are ones with "x" on the bottom. All the other capacitors have a "y" on the bottom.
I suggest you take the back off your imac and visually inspect the capacitors.
i am very very annoyed at this situation.
The las fault occured when my imac was 11.5 months old, so I panicked and paid for Applecare. Then I found out that the warranty had been extended on all rev a imacs. Now my imac is one month short of 3 years old, and again this is happenign just before my apple care runs out.
This does not give me any faith in the future of my imac.

  • IMac G5 Shutting off by itself

My imac G5 second generation is all of a sudden shutting off by itself in the middle of me working on things. The unit is not overheating or making loud fan noises when it does this? What should I do?

Take the back off and check out the LEDs using the instructions [here|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908].

I used to be a huge pc user, actually built them for a living for awhile. Got sick and tired of fixing them all the time and having friends call with issues almost everyday. So 3 months ago i made the switch and all i can say is that i dont regret it one bit. My imac has been great other than this issue i just reported. But i did put 16gb of corsair ram in it and that could have been the problem. My guess is that i just needed to reset everything after putting this new ram in and wallaaaa. If you are looking to make the switch i can garantee you wont regret it.

  • Imac randomly shuts off

Hey so my imac will randomly shut down. I will be using it for about an hour just surfing the web and it shuts off with no warning or anything. I turn it back on and maybe another hour and a half later shuts off again. I am trying to update to the 10.6.8 and be on safari this time and shut down about half hour later. It does not feel hot or over heating at all.

2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB 1067 MHz DDR3

You might want to download and install the very useful and Free "iStatPro" utility which will, among other things, let you monitor your iMac's internal temperatures.  Those can lead to shutdowns if excessive.  You can post those readings here for comments.

  • IMac randomly shutting off

We had a power failure recently and today the iMac G5 has been randomly shutting off while in operation, sleep, etc... (I realize the power failure might not have done anything but I am putting it in there for all details). Anyways, the iMac was attached to a surge protector during the power failure. Since then the iMac has been randomly shutting down and the time between each power on and random off has been decreasing each time to the point where it will only sustain for 3 mins. I have stopped attempting to turn it on and such. Here are the tests I have run:
Trying a different power cable: false
    Trying different surge protector: false
Trying different outlet on different circuit part: false
    Any help would be great

Took it into apple, they said from the first looks it did not look like a power supply problem so it could be anything... But the iMac is under repair

  • Brand New iMac randomly shuts off!! Help!!

I have no idea why this is happening. I've been using macs for 5 years now, had every generation iMac and not a single problem. My new Penryn chipset iMac 20" randomly shuts off!!! Why is this happening? Possibly a power supply issue?
I've cleared the SMC, and PRAM. No avail. Sometimes it will shut down after just 10 minutes, sometimes it will run all night......It's really random.

If it is brand new then it is under warranty. Take it back. It's obviously a hardware problem unless there is a problem with the electric supply where you have it plugged in.
